Battlefield 3 Beta Performance Thread

So far I've been playing with High settings @ 1080P using 12x CFAA. My 2x 4870x2 setup is keeping me above 85fps outdoors with very few exceptions. I've also have not had any graphical glitches, flickering, or anything of that nature. Glad to see Quad-Crossfire working so well especially since it's a beta. Once again, these old cards have not let me down.

First time I played I put it at 1920x1080 Ultra and it seemed to run perfectly fine.

Second time I was getting massive stutter.

I'm guessing you have to restart the game for some of the changes to take effect? Annoying since, of course, you can't actually change the settings unless you're connected to a server and actively playing.

EDIT: I turned off AA and HBAO and left everything else on High/Ultra and it seems to run fine now.

That should help. I bet you're very CPU limited.

Oh for sure. I have been wanting to upgrade for a while and now that my bed is paid off (was costing me $160 a month) I have some extra cash to spend. I would go for the 970 but at my local store the 970 is a special order item and I have zero interest in waiting 5-10 days for an extra 100MHz.

Performance with crossfire was great at first, but as the match went on, I started getting more and more pauses in gameplay. It was as if it needed to pause to load more data, which kept getting me killed.

I disabled crossfire, while it reduced my framerate, i didn't get any of those annoying pauses in gameplay.

This was while running at 1920x1080 in ultra mode with 4xaa.

Note: Rig listed in Sig

30 - 40 fps @ 1680 x 1050 all medium no AA with rig in sig.

I'll be upgrading to a 560 ti or something since my cpu usage in game never exceeds 80%, even on Caspian Border!

Hopefully that'll run on or close to Ultra at my puny res!

Yes you can run ultra (beta quality ultra) with a 560 Ti but AA will have to be disabled still. If you want AA, get at least a 570.

Posted yesterday how I had horrible framerates and had to turn down all my settings.

In an effort to improve my experience, I ended up installing the new ATI drivers (11.9) that just came out, turning off all AA and motion blur, and now I can 45+ fps consistently in the outdoors on high. Not sure which it was (having 11.8 installed, motion blur, or AA), but I don't get that choppy 25 fps lag on high anymore. Looks like I may not have to upgrade after all. :)

Number 1 culprit for low fps is AA, this I've tested.

For me, Caspian Border without AA looks quite bad, especially when looking at long distances. It is not that apparent in Metro since it is a smaller map. Sadly however, a gtx 580 is really needed to turn on AA at 1200p and I am not willing to buy a new video card until the next gen comes out next year.

any fixes known for the weird texture flickering/tearing thing for crossfire?

Couple of things about it, doesn't happen in windowed. If you're staring at say a comcrete walkway and it't taking up about 80% of your screen it doesn't do it. same with the sky. terrain makes it twitch like crazy.

running all settings medium AA off no HBAO or motion blur @ 2560x1600 - Getting about 35-50fps Average on

2500k OC 4.5ghz - 6870

Anyone have suggestions for the best sound settings?

I absolutely LOVE the sound is BC2, probably some of the best I have ever heard in a game. BC3 sound feels a bit flat to me, doesn't have the same punch to it.

What are settings are people using?

Other than the sound, game runs just fine on my rig, only change to my rig is I just put a MSI 560TI Twin Frozr II. Game runs with no issues, feels smooth, and I am super picky about frames.

I haven't touched any of the video setting that it auto detected for me other than changing to full screen and increasing the brightness slightly.

Does motion blur make a difference? I remember getting bad hitches in gameplay (with crossfire enabled) in Alien vs Predator with motion blur enabled, but when I disabled it, it went away.

Yeah I'm getting the same thing with 2 5850's. Windowed mode works fine, also full screen mode works fine if I start a FRAPS recording, which is very odd. I have tried the hotfix drivers, 11-8, and 11-9 to no effect.

I use War Tapes and turn Stereo Mode on. Sounds pretty damn good. IMO the gun sounds are a little muted or distorted or something...also the level up sound effects after the match are very distorted for some reason.

Does anyone can tell how the Sandy Bridge i3 is performing???
as I can see on my laptop all cores are in use, but gpu is crap, so I cannot test properly.

Is anyone getting 50-80 fps on HIGH settings 1920x1080 with i3 cpu ???

Q9650 @ 4.275ghz
GTX 570 @ 850mhz

*1600x1200
*Ultra Settings
*motion blur off
*HBAO disable
*2xAA
*16xAF

Get around 60fps average, very smooth. GPU is at 100%, CPU is at 75% usage.

Wow, Q9650 @ 4.275...nice overclock.

2x 6950 2gb (unlocked refs) do great in 1920x1080 (didn't max AA), but the reason I got a second card is for eyefinity. Metro is doable, but Caspian is definitely not (even with little to no AA). I'll likely keep this at 1920x1080 unless there is a major driver overhaul.

Thnx, took alot of trial and error to finally get it 100% stable

Gotta love that P45 chipset on asus boards.

I used to have a 780i board and performance was terrible, even at 4ghz. I saw a 35% gain in BC2 fps going to a P45 board.

Now I'm only about 10fps off of my buddies 2500k setup which has the same card as me.

Best I can tell you right now is how an i7 920 is doing @4.0

Just wanted to share my experience with this system specs:

e8400 Core 2 Duo (no OC)
4 gigs of ram
GTX 260 216core (slightly overclocked)

system ran about 35-40 fps outside then when I go inside it ranges to 20-30 fps (everything on low)

One tweak that worked wonders that increased my fps by atleast 10 fps (the numbers above are before this tweak) was in rivatuner, to disable shaders in the directx section.

Just bought a 560 ti as the first part of my upgrade and will post results later

:::EDIT:::

With the same system just the new video card (GTX 560 TI) I am able to play at around 60fps constant on medium settings, I keep it on low just to get the most out of it.

Here is cpu usage on an i3/6870 playing Metro inside subway at 1080p no AA HSAO off Post AA Low 8x AF Medium Settings.

GPU stays maxed at 100%.

I've been playing with most of the settings on Ultra and MSAA 2x and 8x AF. I turned down the motion blur too. A little slowdown once in a while, but pretty much smooth all the time.

Hey guys,

Do you think running more than 4G of RAM (W7-64bit) will make any difference for BF3?

I have 4G right now and I'm debating buying 4G more.

What's your experience so far?

Indoor 50-75 FPS
Outdoor 35-55 FPS
1920x1080 all settings on high, no AA

Specs in sig.

If you have memory free after loading the game, more will not help you. Its like throwing a bucket of cold water on ice and expecting it to catch on fire.

If you had 2, then yes, going to 4 will help. If you have 4, I wouldn't expect any changes going to 8. If you did get them, it would probably be miniscule.

If you're looking for an excuse to buy more toys, then wtf go for it :D

I haven't checked my FPS but the sig rig is what I'm running. I went from Metro single card to Metro 2 card, and I immediately noticed
the difference. It was MUCH more fluid @ 1920 x 1080, 2x msaa, ultra. I tried Eyefinity (5760 x 1080) and you could hear the
poor 6970's groan. Its a brutal game, optimizations will improve things considerably though I can imagine.

Stay tuned, it will only get better

specs are in my sig.

getting 37-40ish FPS outdoors and i havent paid attention to indoor FPS,but it's close.

even at 30-40fps the game still runs super nice.

Lol! Thanks for the reply... I haven't been able to play the Beta so I wanted to find out how much RAM the game uses and see if more than 4G is needed. - Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! Do you know about running Ultra with 2x AA and maybe something like Motion Blur and HABO turned fully off?

I'd really like to have a little AA as Caspian Border doesn't look so great when viewing things from far away (very jaggy)..

QUALITY SETTING COMPARISION
taken from geforce.com LINK

SHADOWS:
shadow-quality-small.jpg

At Low Quality, shadows are not filtered, resulting in hard edges and saw tooth patterns.
At Medium, shadow edges are smoothed out. At High or Ultra quality, the resolution of the shadow map is higher, resulting in detailed but smooth shadows.

ambient-occlusion.jpg

These set of images show the benefit of high quality ambient occlusion.
At the Low and Medium, the buildings lack proper self shadowing.
High and Ultra settings enable HBAO, or Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion, a self shadowing technique developed by NVIDIA that's now used in various games.
Note the detailed shadows under the windows and arches.

About what can I expect to play at with my rig in my sig?

Also, what would be the nVidia equivalent of my GFX card?

Finally, I can't get the FRAPS overlay to show up in BF3. Tips?
