Battlefield 3 Beta Performance Thread

Just played a bit with a 6870 everything set to high and 16xAF and 2xAA at 1920x1200. I ran FRAPS and got

Avg: 77 Min:56 Max:96 This was indoors in the subway. Using the 11.10 preview drivers. It seems to me the 6870 ran jsut as good as my GTX570, but it was alot quieter and cooler. It was my Dad's video card. I am really thinking about returning my GTX570 and saving like $100 and getting a 6950 or GTX560 Ti..

Just ran it again this time outdoors metro same settings 6870 Avg: 38 Min: 26 Max: 63

Is this a single cards performance, if yes you obviously missed to max out something.

It is single card. I didn't have that HBO thing enabled and I only used 2xaa but other than that it was everything set to high

What are people with 580GTX 1.5GB SLI getting at 2560x1440 / 2560x1600 performance with AA on?

I posted my 590 results with a 10% OC at 2560x1600. You can probably assume 5-10% better unless you are overclocked.

60-90 fps on the subway level

60-70 fps outside.

I have everything on ultra except only 2x AA, HBAO off, and deferred AA off. When I ran it with all of those on I got about 40 fps, which matches up to what nvidia reports in their guide, and really isn't that great/playable for SLI.

Oh wow, i disabled AA and it made a huge difference. I get about 45 average outside and 50 - 70 indoors.
And that's using a single 6870. Crossfire is still having issues for me.

A few things, is anyone else getting somewhat laggy performance even when the FPS are reasonably steady? I think these new drivers the game made me get are a bit FUBAR'd. On my first try installing the new drivers I BSOD'd. I also get instances where BF3 will lockup when I first connect to a server and go to the game. It seems to impact other games as well (game locks up) like CS:S which leads me to believe this is driver related. A restart fixes the issue.

The second question is, what is my best option for improving performance hardware wise?
It's on this computer:<<Main Computer: Intel E8400 :: Asus P5Q Pro :: 4GB (2x2gb) G. Skill :: ATI HD 5770 1GB :: SB Audigy 2 :: 150GB Raptor :: 485w Enermax>>

It seems like a better processor is going to be a bit of a hassle as I'd really need to go new mobo for a new socket and then all new RAM as well. I hear BF3 is not *that* CPU intense. I could add another 4gb of ram (I run Win7 64bit) and I was thinking a new video card like a ATI 6950 2gb card. I like the triple monitor function on these ATI cards.

I don't mind turning down the features and resolution a bit.

Current performance per fraps for a 2480x800 res. everything low except terrain detail at medium is Min 34 Max 42 Avg 38.188, but it still felt somewhat laggy. I'd like to maybe get a bit more res, perhaps 2896x1024, if I could go full on 3968x1200 that would be even better and I would be willing to turn down the video settings.

BF3-multimon.jpg

I like the multi-monitor setup and FOV it provides.

OutKlast, I do not know where you heard BF 3 was not very cpu intense because that is not true. my 2500k easily hits over 80% at times and just two cores of it would run rings around an E8400. your E8400 is barely going to cut in this game and will not come close to letting you use a high end card. you need to upgrade your cpu for sure before getting a video card capable of running this game on higher end settings.

The other BF3 general thread here. <_<

So what are my options here?, I didn't want to spend much more then ~350 or so. It seems like I can either do a new mobo, i5 proc, 16gb ram kit and keep the 5770. Or I can keep my current mobo/proc/ram and get a new video card. The reason I mentioned the 6950 is I hear that BF3 loves filling the video memory up and that is the start of the 2GB cards. Then again this was the same person that said it didn't use much CPU mainly video card.

it does love vram but your performance will not go up because your cpu will be limiting it. really with a 5770 and and E8400, you are going to have to get both a gpu and cpu upgrade for a game like this. a new cpu will help a little but at high res that 5770 will not shine at all. a new gpu would only be held back by that E8400.

I just tried to run it on 2 cores of my 2500k and it was unplayable which is odd.

35-60 fps about 45 average.

c2q q8200 stock
4gb ddr2
geforce 460 1gb 775mhz oc.
500gb hdd 7200rpm
windows 7 ultimate 64

im using the automatic settings, most shit is on high, they had AA off, but i turned it to 4x, didnt seem to affect performance negatively at all. im just happy the game is playable since my computer doesnt meet the recommended system spec.

okay, so i bit, i installed origin and downloaded the beta!

installed the web plugins and other crap to get the game to run.. kind of annoying... what is the point of Origin if it is just going to use your web browser for everything...

But ya.. my rig right now

i5 @ 3.4Ghz
16G DDR3 1333
ATi 4850 512mb card

i am holding out for next gen cards as this 4850 has held me out fine lately for TF2 and BC2.

I have all in game settings to LOW and motion blur off.

this is a run in fraps (before the game crashed on me) in Metro (the open park map?)

1920 x 1080 60Mhz on a 22' LCD

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
2964, 86344, 25, 43, 34.328

Will post more as i play.

Sure i did, seems a bit laggy in most areas

i dropped it down to 1680 x 1050 and put the firs 4 video options to medium and got

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
18760, 500304, 24, 60, 37.497

not awful for this card, but i would certainly want a smoother experience.

crashed 3 times to the desktop now so giving up playing for now.

I found that disabling motion blur completely can give you more fps. Open "PROF_SAVE_body" using Notepadd++ and change motionblur settings (there are 3 of them) to "0." Also, I was able to change FOV from there.

Alright so I slightly OC'd the CPU/GPU/MEM. I then monitored CPU % use, RAM use, GPU % use, GPU RAM use.

The CPU usage is around the high 90's occasionally holding at 100% for a second or so here and there. RAM usage is a measly ~1-1.5gb total for the game. The CPU/RAM use did not seem impacted by total screen resolution high or low. I didn't test video settings.

With everything on low I got the following results:

At 2480x800:
GPU % use: Average @ 92.6%
GPU ram use: Average @ 852mb
FRAPS: Min: 24 / Max: 79 / Average: 48.43

At: 3968x1200
GPU % use: Average @ 98.4%
GPU ram use: Average @ 1066mb
FRAPS: Min: 18 / Max: 52 / Average: 23.2

-------

So this leads into my next question, what kind of CPU % use are you guys getting and what CPU do you have?

It seems like at low resolutions the GPU is doing fine so there must be another bottleneck, the CPU I guess? I may do a "progressive" upgrade. Get a new CPU/Mobo/RAM combo and reuse the video card and just run it at low resolutions for a little while and then later upgrade the video card.

I initially disabled motion blur but I found with it off the game felt very choppy. I now have a small amount of blur and everything feels much smoother.

If you're talking about the mini map on the lower left (and your ammo display on the right) is being cut off by half then go to Video settings and adjust in Open Screen Adjust. Same thing happened to me when first playing at 2560x1600 and took me some time to figure it out.

Thank you Travis. That resolved my issue. Native resolution makes the game significantly better. But, there is a performance penalty by going native. I think I'll just suck it up keep playing 1920x1200.

Have you guys got any opinions/info on VRAM requirements during play?

Im at a crossroads in terms of purchasing a new GPU for this game: Ive nailed it down to a Gigabyte GTX 580 SO 1.5gb or GTX 580 3gb (surpisingly the latter is cheaper!)

I've seen reports on the EA forums that some people hit up to 1.5gb VRAM usage during play on the caspian border map and Im wondering whether its a safer bet to go for the 3gb card over the factory overclocked one.

it all depends on what read you play.
Personally I always reach 1.5GB of used memory while playing crysis2, modern games prefetch data into memory but this not means that Crysis 2 can't run well with 1.2GB of memory.
1.5GB is more than enough with battlefield 3 if you play with a single monitor.

You're welcome. It does look better at native resolution indeed, if you have issue with performance then crank down a few settings like AA , ambient occlusion will help increase the fps.

Just to give you an idea, this game eats 2GB of my HD6970 @2560x1600.

I just upgraded the other day from a gtx260 to a gtx570 @ and OC'd it to 950mhz and it made a world of difference!

Was getting fps in the high 40's on medium settings with the gtx260 and the game felt very laggy and was kinda hard to track onto people quickly.

Now with gtx570 I run all ULTRA settings, 4x AA-Medium, 16x AF, no motion blur, HBAO off, 1280x960 rez @ 120hz on my CRT I'm averaging around 95 fps!

Running at this lower resolution really helps, the gtx570 is around 93% usage, if I run 1600x1200 it's pegged at 100% usage and fps is much lower. That's the nice thing with CRT's they still look great at lower rez with a really fast refresh rate.

ULTRA SETTINGS:
65 - 85 fps outside
90 - 150 fps inside

It's very smooth and super easy to get kills now, I feel like I have the jump on everyone.

The Class I'm using...

Assault
UMP-45 w/ Red Dot
MP-443 w/ Tactical
Flak Vest or Squad Sprint

I'm now getting on averate a 2.5kdr after each round with about 5000-8000pts was 1st place for the all 10 rounds I played last night.

Was getting reasonable frame rates with my 5970, I had to drop to 1920x1200 though because 2560x1600 is broken. The problem is though after 10 mins of play I started to get 2-3 second pauses every 10-15 seconds which made it unplayable. Oh well

1920x1200
Ultra settings
4x AA

Smooth as butter.

I expected this game to be more demanding. My video card actually runs cooler than bad company 2. How is that possible? I dont even break 70 degrees and in bad company Id hit mid 70s.

The graphics are better, yet its less demanding on the card. Anyone else notice this?

we have different opinion on what is "smooth as butter" :D
you often go down 60FPS outdoor so where is this smoothness?

I removed the 11.10 preview drivers and installed 11.9 (I was previously using 11.8) and my horrible stutter/pausing problem is gone! I played a whole round with crossfire enabled and no pauses to load anything.

I hit the 1.5gb memory limit on my GTX580 easily on the metro level.
GPU Core Clock [MHz] , GPU Memory Clock [MHz] , GPU Shader Clock [MHz] , GPU 822.7 , 1025.0 , 1640.0 ,
Memory Controller Load [%] ,
1502 ,

prefetch, only prefetch.

With my GTX580 1.5gb I am always at ~100% vram usage at 1920x1200 Ultra with 4x AA. Perfectly smooth though.

Thanks for the info chaps, I think 3gb VRAM will make zero impact on my single 1080p display so I've opted for the factory overclocked version instead.

Yeah I too have noticed this.

My current Rig (AMD X2 550, HD5770) which im about to ditch, had some real stuttering issues running medium settings on BC2 which made playing on some of the larger maps near on impossible.

Playing this beta on medium to low settings is pretty smooth but still looks better than BC2. Kudos to DICE!

Avg 38 fps outdoors, 48 in doors. Gameplay still feels smooth. Havent updated to the latest betas. Set to ultra settings at 1920x1080.

The beta does not include all the graphic options, textures, etc etc. This is common knowledge.
