Dual Boot Server 2003 and XP?

Why not download GSX server from VMWare and run either or both at the same time? Or, if you can lay your hands on a box with workstation 5.5+ then you can make an image and use the player (which is free). There's a lot of options out there which will not require you to choose which to run and...

    Silicon Graphics Cases

Not sure, I can dig around in the basement tonight and see if I still have that case, if not I know I have another Indigo that I can take apart and show you what I meant. Would that help?

    Silicon Graphics Cases

Oh yes, many moons ago. To answer your question, no, most ATX motherboards will not fit as the case isn't that deep (IIRC about 1-1/2 or 2" too shallow or around 8" deep). That said there are some very specific motherboards that will work, you just need to ask yourself if it is worth it...

How do I install my Mitsumi Floppy 7-in-1 USB Card Reader/Smart Media Drive

Hopefully you checked in advance to buying this that your motherboard has a free onboard header, that 'extension' you are talknig about is the USB cable, without it all functions other than the floppy will not work. As for formatting and what not with the flopyy, I don't know. I didn't have...

    Hard Drives for File Server

You should post the model, most older sun's are stuck at U2W and it would be a waste to put newer larger drives in them.

    Compact flash card, or reader?

Is the reader powered? If it's passive USB it may not be giving the media enough juice to work correctly (and there are two different types of CF media out there, 3.3v and older 5v IIRC). - HTH

Good raid 5 PCI SATA card

Look at 3Ware and LSI for your SATA card. As for the drives, they really should be matched. If you don't want to have to think about getting the same type drive if one fails then buy Seagates (5 year Warranty) and be done with it. - HTH

Was given a Dell W1700 - not working tho

I agree with what was suggested before, sounds like the backlight burned out. The good news is that it's fixable. Bad news is finding the part. I'd suggest calling Dell to see what they would charge to send it in and repair (if it is the backlight). Worst case, ebay it to someone who knows what...

    Building a Network File server

I’ve already done a project with similar goals as your own, in total I spent under 700 took around 4 hours to setup and it’s been running non-stop for about 2 months. I used a mini-ITX motherboard in a Casetronic C146 Mini-ITX 1U rack case, maxed out the ram (1Gig DDR) and connected 2 x 300GB...

    Internal Card readers....

2nd what DougLite posted, I have the same drive but in black. Sure I might never need to use the floppy, but if I ever have to it's nice to know it's there and not in some parts box in the basement.

    Exeternal SATA and PCI Plate

I'm doing just that, scroll down on this page here for an 8 port internal to external adapter and various cables that might come in handy. As for power, just use whatever PSU comes in the drive case and a 4-pin molex to sata adapter. I'm running my drives this way in a former scsi mini-tower...

Anyone ever used a slim CD/floppy combo?

I can tell you that any slimline optical drive will work, I've swapped the original CD drives with DVD's and then one DVD failed so I put in a cd burner (since it was cheap at the time) instead.

Anyone ever used a slim CD/floppy combo?

Yup, use them all the time. I have the exact one linked (CD-FD COMBO 1 x Slim DVD-ROM and 1 x FDD in 5.25 Bracket Blk) in both of my 1U servers, you'll like them just fine for the stated purpose. - HTH

    CCNA Lab Advice

What hardware you need for your lab depends greatly on how far up the certification chain you want to go. Two years ago I just needed the basics (1900, 2500's) but it's grown to include (1) 1600's, (2) 1700's, (6) 2500's, (2) 2600's and several switches from 1900's all the way up to a 6509...

    SNMP Questions

Take a look at SICM it'll combine MRTG along with RRD to push past the 95%, the SICM page also has a beefy zip with several hundred MIB's all ready to go for most devices that can talk SNMP v1 or v2. I recently moved from plain MRTG over to SICM with MiniApache to simplify things and its...

I need some SATA cables....where can I find these?

Take a look here 36" 90 degree SATA cables for 7.95. They have just about any kind of angle you'd need and are the cheapest souce I've found so far. I picked up 2 dozen of the 90's and 270's about a month ago for 6 servers at work (with spares for expansion) and I'm quite happy with them...

They are pretty interesting, maybe not so much for the reasons you listed but I have seen them used for firewalls/IDS and the like. Are you getting rid of any of them? I’d be up for getting one with the CF card to replace my existing m0n0wall box.

Office File Server Build (Specs Suggestions) Please

For a small office, 3 x 200GB would be plenty, not just for user folders but also to allow for different backup solutions such as a Monday full backup with daily incremental backups after than with 1 to 3 weeks of archives available on disk vs. tape. Granted, I'm talking RAID 5, so 400GB...

looking for a riser card, (1) 8x AGP, and (3) PCI Slots, possible?

I'm pretty sure that the PVR500 is on sale now, and I'd have to agree that it makes much more sense to use it (with a rigid riser card) than looking for ribbon riser which will mean additional engineering for the card mount.

    Windows with ATA + SCSI

I have no idea what happened but my present system is 36GB SCSI (boot) with 2 x 250GB IDE drives. I suggest you disconnect all IDE drives and reinstall, then attach your IDE drives. Also check to make sure your SCSI card is set as a boot device in the BIOS, sounds like it's not.

where could I find short 1U cases

RAQ cases will not fit a standard (ATX/mATX) motherboard and it'll take some showhorning to get a ITX in there. The front LCD also isn't something trivial to adapt for use off serial. That said, CalPC makes a 14" 1U case in two styles (ports forward or in the rear) that are pretty close in...

How many external 5.25" and 3.5" bays do you really need?

My Ideal case only needs 1 x 5.25" external but 2 x 3.5" internal and 3 x 3.5" external (with hot-swap sleds). The reason I need that configuration is that I use a mix IDE/SCSI with the 2 internal drives being IDE (2 x 250GB) and the 3 external drives being 72GB 10k SCSI. Granted, not...

rackmount case with front PCI card slots?

I actually got two of them off ebay, and no, they want to charge you for any additional parts. Besides, the PSU option listed on the page is only 180-200w (36.00 IIRC). Granted, it's _so_ close to a standard 1U format you could easily buy your own elsewhere and install it. - HTH

Moved PVR-250 to new slot, Help!

rackmount case with front PCI card slots?

I have two of these exact cases except I went with the black model (10.00 more). They are 'ok' but be sure they send you the extra stamped I/O plates and don't buy a motherboard until you can match one up to one of those. Sure, you could mod it, but then you'll be looking at it everyday. I would...

    Rack cases?

Not true at all, in fact quite a few 2U's take regular ATX's, however, if you want to use more than 3 cards (video or other) you would be better off with a 3U or 4U.

    eSATA rack

Don't forget to look here as well. 12 drives in a 2U package, or 16+ in a 3U/4U package. A 1U with 4 fixed drives would be nice... guess they don't make them that small.
