Compact flash card, or reader?

I have a Nikon 950 with a lexar card and a nikon card. When I switched to XP, my old reader was not compatible. So I bought a scandisk 12 in 1 reader. Worked great with my nikon card. However when I plugged my lexar in, the reader doesn't detect it at all, drive says insert disk. Card works fine in the camera, reformatted etc.

So I get online with lexars chat support, and they finally gave me an RMA. I was impressed, the card is 5 years old.

This still sounds not quite right, so I loaded up my me disc and plugged in my old reader (should have done this sooner). Lexar card works fine in the old reader. Does it sound like the card is ok but the new reader is fubared? This is really strange, I think I'll exchange the reader for another lexar brand this time.
 
Is the reader powered? If it's passive USB it may not be giving the media enough juice to work correctly (and there are two different types of CF media out there, 3.3v and older 5v IIRC).

The reader is powered from the usb port. I tried plugging it into the spare usb port on my keyboard but windows said there wasn't enough power for the hub. Plugged it back in to the back port. Seems if it were a usb power problem, the card wouldn't have worked on the old reader.

Did a quick research on 5 and 3.3v for cf. Cf cards are 3.3 and 5v compatible. Looks like some of the other smart media cards can be either 3.3 or 5v, but not both.

Thanks for the tip. BTW, I am using this camera intensively at work, and can't afford a major screwup, it would be like a days work, wasted and lost.
