I have a sun server sitting in my basement and she needs some hard drives. I'm thinking about using it to store my files, mp3, games, videos, etc. It takes 80 pin SCSI drives and I was thinking about picking up some refurbed drives, (2) 73gb 10k http://www.foxtec.com/products/subcategory.asp?id=1064 or (1) 146gb 10k http://www.hypermicro.com/product.asp?pf_id=HDSE116

Can anyone offer any ideas, suggestions or advice on possible HD's and setup configurations? If I did any RAID I would probably do mirroring.

You should post the model, most older sun's are stuck at U2W and it would be a waste to put newer larger drives in them.

Ah, a machine I know well. We've got a bunch of these beasts at work. The internal bays are Ultra Wide single ended. 40MB/s. They'll get saturated pretty quickly by modern drives, so if you've got >1 backplane if you've got more slots than drives you'll want to spread out the drives across the channels. They're in groups of 4.
As for installing newer, larger drives, we haven't had any trouble stuffing U320 drives in them. I think the largest we've installed is a 73GB, but I don't see any reason a 146 or 300 wouldn't work.
