I'm posting this mostly because the number of times I've referred back to my previous build thread:
https://hardforum.com/threads/new-threadripper-1950x-build.1964104/
to remind myself what was actually in the box was too many to count. Having this here for posterity will likely pay off...
I couldn't find a thread on this anywhere else, and though that "General Hardware" might be the best place for it? If it already exists somewhere else, please point me there...
But...
I wish Kyle the best.
However, this site has been my absolute go-to for honest reviews and tech news since...
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Yes. (no, really, all of the above, see details below)
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$3Kish
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
Just...
Is IEEE-1394 even a thing anymore?
I'm looking to build a new rig and still need to pull video off of DV cameras which use firewire. Am I stuck having to purchase a PCI card to get a firewire port on a new rig?
Thanks.

So, I always build my own machines...but I'm having trouble justifying it against this time? Someone tell me where I've gone wrong in my thinking?
Here's where I started:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3zDGLJ
This was basically off the cuff. Not much thought involved. (also, prices will be...
**EDIT - partially based on a wrong first impression... read further down for a more informed impression. **
So, after days of watching nowinstock, and missing a bunch of times on both 1080s and 1070s, I finally got lucky and grabbed both a Gaming, and a Gaming X from newegg. Before they...
I'm almost certainly going to get a 1080 as an upgrade to my 280x...but I'm also planning on grabbing Doom.
I'm still deep in Fallout 4, so no real hurry.
Anyone willing to speculate on whether or not their could be a GTX 1080/Doom bundle in a month or so?
The manual for by sabertooth z77 says the following:
"We do not recommended to use LucidLogix Virtu MVP under RAID mode."
Can anyone elaborate on that? I'm currently running my SSD and two 750gig HDDs on my Intel SATA ports. The two 750 gig drives are in a RAID 0/RAID 1 configuration...
From my build thread:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1685544
It isn't done yet, and there have been a few hiccups along the way. For starters, my keyboard/mouse combo hasn't arrived yet, nor has my 32 gigs of memory, or my corsair H100 cooler. And, in the end, the stock cpu cooler's...
So, after checking my previous build thread here:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1272877
it looks like I go about 4 years between builds of my main rig. In the meantime, I've built other boxes (an i3 build for my WHS, for example), but now my main rig is really due for replacement...
My Lexar Professional dual slot card reader stopped working yesterday. Sort of.
Here's the story. It no longer can detect a card (CF) while in Windows 7. However, it works perfectly on another machine. So, it isn't the card reader itself, but something about the operating...
My WHS Event log shows that my
Volume Shadow Copy and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider are restarting over and over...filling the event log.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
New WHS rig to replace my existing rig
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
< $500 for the parts required
3) Where do you live?
New Jersey
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget...
My WHS consists of a 500gig "primary" drive, and two 2TB drives as part of the storage pool.
The "primary" drive started getting errors, and eventually the server would freeze after being up for a few minutes.
I had mirroring turned on for almost everything, so my data likely spans all...
I ran out of space in my WHS. It has 4 500 gig drives in it. I purchased two WD 2tb drives to fix the problem.
If I have folder duplication on for everything (meaning everything is on at least 2 drives), is it necessary for me to "remove" one of the 500 gig drives from the pool, or can I...
I just installed windows 7 x64 ultimate as a second OS on my main rig.
When it is running XP (32 bit), it wakes from sleep, backs up, and goes back to sleep.
When it is running Win7, it wakes from sleep, backs up, BUT doesn't go back to sleep.
I found this via google...
So, like everyone else, I'll be installing Windows 7 for real tonight.
I was just wondering what your plans are to prepare for the install. For me, it's been a few years since I've done a clean install (still on XP, avoided Vista like the plague). So, I'm planning on writing down a list of...
So, the other day by Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4's onboard gigE died. Computer just fell off the network. In fact, even if I went into the BIOS screen, there was no entry for "onboard lan".
Died, kaput, gone.
The system has been running fine for just over a year with a q6600 running at 3.2.
I...
I'm seeing some very strange behavior in Windows Explorer while browsing the WHS shares, and I was wondering if anyone had any clues...I'm not even sure how I might search for this on google, so here goes...
If I double click on "Shared Folders on Server", then double click on "Public", then...
So, after about 3 weeks of having WHS running in my house, I've come to the conclusion that it has drastically changed the way I think about storage.
When I built my quad rig last summer I put 4 500 gig drives in it. Three of them were in a RAID, with a 3x60 (120 gig) RAID 0 stripe for the...
My WHS has been running for a few days now. There are 2 client pcs connected to it (so far).
On one of them (call it machineA), I kicked off a "manual backup" which finished just fine, on the other (machineB) I just allowed it to do its "automatic backup" that evening. It worked...
After reading a thread here, I decided to check out WHS.
For now, it's installed on a machine with a single 500 gig drive, and a gigabit nic.
At first, throughput was fine (40 MB/s) while putting stuff on the server. However, after a little while, I noticed that my network utilization...
I'm setting up a dedicated pc to connect to my Yamaha Disklavier piano. I'd really like for the monitor to have a gloss black bezel to somewhat match, since a gloss black computer desk is out of the question. :D
Which brands have gloss black bezels nowadays? I'd like something in the 20" to...
Just a heads up.
Anyone planning to use the thermaltake armor with the side mounted 25cm fan and the thermalright ultra 120 extreme as the cpu cooler, you are likely to run into space issues.
It is do-able, but not simple.
See the pictures in my thread in the general section about my...
Just finished putting my rig together (well, last night).
Should the the thermalright 120 ultra have some ability to twist a bit? The clamps are tightened all the way down, but the heat sink will still twist if I try.
Thanks.

Just got my geForce 8800GT 512MB from clubIT for my new build.
I noticed that it has two separate connectors for extra power. Do I use both of them?
My Antec power supply (modular) has 1 PCI-E cable (I assume that one plugs right into the video card), and it has another "6+2" PCI-E...
I just ordered a new system, with details here:
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1272877
I'm now thinking about the disks I need for this system. My current system consists of the following:
Twin 300Gig drives in Raid 1 (redundant):
C: 30 gigs (Windows XP)
D: 50 gigs...
It's time for me to build a new computer, but I've been out of it for long enough to be confused. I've been reading carefully for a few weeks now, and think I'm getting closer. First some background.
One of my earlier builds is an Abit BP6 running dual 300 mhz celerons overclocked to 450...
