    Router Questions

No real need to upgrade for the wired devices. If any of your wireless devices can take advantage of the add features then maybe upgrade otherwise you would not see much difference between the '66 & the '87. I don't have any personal experience with the RT-AC3200.

    Troubleshooting help - Asus X99 TUF 3.1

Nothing in the manual tells me that the 4 pin is optional. I base my opinion on the following statement from page 1-34 of the manual. "DO NOT forget to connect the 4-pin/8-pin EATX12 V power plug. Otherwise, the system will not boot."

    Troubleshooting help - Asus X99 TUF 3.1

If you are testing with a single memory module it needs to be in slot D1. Also you need to plug in the 4 pin and the 8 pin power plugs as well as the 24 pin power plug or it will not boot.

    Weird screen blink

I've experienced this on a few different set ups but usually dual monitors. After going through everything I could think of, I've come to the conclusion that it is caused by dwm (desktop windows manager) and I don't know how to solve it completely but anything you can do to reduce the load that...

    Win 10 Upgrade preslected

It looks like hiding the upgrade and then rebooting keeps the upgrade hidden for now. EDIT: This is actually three upgrade to Win 10 updates, all with the same name but with slightly different sizes. Once you've hidden all three of them they appear to stay hidden.

Windows 7 Directory Structure for "Libraries"

Yes. Libraries is a function/feature of Windows Explorer, not your user profile. For example your User Profile folder "Documents" and the Public User Profile folder "Documents" are where Windows Explorer will look to to find the files that it will show in the Libraries Document view that it...

    Manual Installs - General Practices

To be fair I have been beta testing operating systems and applications since the 1980's and some of my current installs are bleeding edge "nightlies" which will break and often. With openSUSE 13.2 I would be surprised if you could not find every program you need. If you just want to learn then...

    Manual Installs - General Practices

I use a lot of different applications in several different flavors of Linux and I almost never have to "manually install", there are times when you have to go to the console to make certain programs work or keep working and the forum can be your friend then. The openSuse forum users are a pretty...

    Manual Installs - General Practices

There is a PPA for makeMKV so that shouldn't be a problem. I only play with openSUSE occasionally, 13.2 is not out on the bleeding edge. Their stable platform is well maintained so not going to break all that often. BUT it will eventually break something and you will learn how fix it. You do...

    Random Reboots

While you are there check to see if your memory timings are the same for each of the four modules, at least through the secondary timings. If necessary loosen up the tighter modules until they all match. I have seen 2 sets of 2 module kits have better matched timing than some single 4 module...

Web browsers sluggish on win 10

I'm on fast ring 10532 so this might not apply to you. When 10532 rolled out all my network/internet related activities were slow to paint/load and sometimes choppy, I didn't think much about it, that's just beta testing... But yesterday I added memory (now 32 gb) and was poking around...

duHow do you dual boot or multi-boot Window 10 and Linux

You should not defrag an SSD. In my experience you will not have any problems re-sizing the Windows partition on a SSD so the situation should not occur. Not being able to re-size the Windows partition on a HDD it is a specific problem with where Windows locates the MFT on a HDD.

    Random Reboots

My daily driver is the Z77 Sabertooth, it did have a 3570k, but now 3770. In the beginning I experienced random shutdown/reboot that I thought was power related. I changed out the PSU and installed a "pure sine wave" UPS. That did not fully solve the problem. Like you I populated all four...

    Random Reboots

If event viewer is not telling you any thing, you could try raising the VCCSA voltage a little or you could implement XMP profile if your 4 memory modules were a single kit.

Upgrading 10 year old Dell for parents

Easy for me to build for ~$500 or less and you get better quality components. A couple things to help on the pricing: You don't need a video card for HDMI, many good motherboards have HDMI on board. Do you really intend to "burn" Blu-ray discs? Blu-ray readers are cheaper, however if he...

HP dv6-2004eo Boots ONLY half the time?

The wifi issue is not a problem to be fixed, it is just a common symptom exhibited by these HP laptops when there is GPU solder joint failure or GPU failure. Don't worry about the SMD capacitor discoloration, probably fine, failure mode is cracking (in the tan part) or separated at the ends...

HP dv6-2004eo Boots ONLY half the time?

I am working on a similar HP laptop with a similar booting problem. So far: it will only boot normally every time, when the wireless nic is removed, otherwise it is pretty much as you described.

    Computer shutting down randomly

They make them with higher wattage ratings (ss2200 is 1200 watts) It is possible, but so could anything using that same circuit, which is why I use dedicated circuits with isolated grounds for mission critical installations. Why do you blame the monitor for the weird artifacts? No...
