PWM fans weren't a thing last time I built a PC 5-years ago.
If I'm using a PWM fan hub, all PWM fans, and have the hub plugged into a PWM mobo fan header, will I have individual control of each fan or will the speed of all fans on the hub be controlled simultaneously?
I know there's no guarantee it will post at 3000MHz, but is it somewhat safe to asssume that if 4 x 8GB Corsair Dominator (CMD32GX4M4B3000C15) is on my motherboard's QVL list for 3000MHz speeds that the same memory in 2 x 8GB will post (or can manually be set to) that speed as well?
Thanks, guys... this saved me some time. I wonder why "they" decided to change the hole pattern since it's obvious that it didn't need to be done. Here's a pic of the hole pattern change on the Crosshair VI Hero board dook43 mentioned.
I don't mind removing the AM3's plastic tab mount, but are you saying the hole pattern to install the Wraith cooler is different and/or the backplate won't work with my AM3 board?
Will a stock AM4 Ryzen 1400 Wraith HSF fit on an AM3+ FX-8350 / Asus M5A99X-EVO?
I'm going to dedicate an old AM3+ machine to a little home server, but the stock HSF's fan has been making a very slight bearing noise. I have a new Ryzen R5 that I'd like to replace the stock HSF on and it'd be...
GPU OUTPUT: 6870 w/ (2) mini-DP, (2) DVI, and (1) HDMI.
MONITORS INPUT: (1) DP, (1) DVI, and (1) VGA.
In order to connect all three monitors to the 6870 and run Eyefinity, will the following cables work?
One of these:
Card out DVI to monitor in DP.
Two of these:
Card out mini-DP to monitor...
Do you think they would send me 2 or 3... or am I getting too greedy? I'm going to add a 2nd video card at the end of the month and would prefer to have all three connected via DP.
Thanks Sniper. So your ALT+maximize shortcut attaches it to the grid... then once it's attached to the grid you can easily move it between the preset grids. Correct?
With Eyefinity, if I drag a window over from one monitor to another and maximize it, does it maximize in just that monitor or over the entire desktop?
If I add a 2nd video card, can I connect two monitors to one card and the 3rd monitor to the other... all connected via DP?
I have an XFX 2GB 6870 w/ two DVI, two mini DP, and one HDMI?
How do I connect three monitors to this card? Is there a difference in running multiple displays in Eyefinity and just normal extended desktop?
The monitors only have DVI and DP.
Do most games support three Eyefinity displays with 16:10 aspect ratio or will they default to three 16:9? Just wondering if games like BF3 and Skyrim will cut off the additonal 120 lines of horizontal resolution resulting in black bars at the top and bottom.
I'm putting together a new system and want Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate (64-bit), but I have zero OS to start with. The $250-290 price tag for the full install seems pretty steep. Can I just buy a cheap version of XP and do 7 upgrade?
I posted a similar question a few days ago. Asking if a 4800+ (oc'd to over 3GHz) would bottleneck even a weaker GPU than the 560ti you're asking about during MW2 gameplay. After some research, the answer was pretty unanimous that I needed to ditch the socket 939 setup.
For example, these are specs listed for an Asus M5A88.
PCI Express 2.0 x16: 2 (x16, x4)
So this card has two x16 slots, but one has x16 electrical and the other has x4 electrical? Correct? So this board could run two x16 cards?
Ok, so obviously I need two PCIe slots to run video cards in SLI or CrossFire, but do they both need to be x16?
My intention is to run two 6870's in CrossFire.
Thanks for the link drescherjm. These don't seem like real world results worth spending the extra money on. For the sub-$100 price, I'd rather have the 16GB.
Appreciate the help!
Above was CL8 Corsair Vengeance vs CL7 Mushkin RedLine.
So, what is the benefit between the two below to justify the additional $28?
CHOICE 1: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4) 1600 9-9-9-24 1.5V - $47
CHOICE 2: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4) 1600 8-8-8-24 1.5V - $75
Also, if you bundle CHOICE 1 in...
Keeping the manufacturer name out of it for now, which is better between these two timings/voltages for games and basic Windows tasks.
Brand AAA, mfr. specs: 8-8-8-24 1.5V
Brand BBB, mfr. specs: 7-9-8-24 1.65V
EDIT: Should have mentioned, it's for a Phenom X4 955 and Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3.
Also, I just noticed your signature and the uncanny similarities between your system and mine w/ just some slight overall differences.

I noticed the Gigabyte website has a supported memory list for all revisons of the UD5 and only revision 1.0 for the UD3. Revision 1.1 and 1.2 for the UD3 do not have a memory support page.
I have and would like to use some Corsair XMS3 on the UD3 rev 1.2. As I stated, the 1.2 revision does...
I know they're typically a little more expensive, but in the past I've always purchased Asus motherboards and video cards. I'm currently looking at a Radeon 6870; the Asus 1GB and XFX 2GB are currently the same price at NewEgg. I would eventually like to run a 2nd card w/ CrossFire, so I think...
Ok, thanks Red Falcon. That is what I will do. I just started putting together a system for my sister w/ a Phenom 955, but realized it was overkill for her internet/email needs. I am going to downgrade her and keep that CPU for myself.
What would be an appropriate video card to go along with...
Thanks!
My problem is: In the process of putting together a system for my sister, I got the itch to build a new one for myself. I think I'm going to get her the Athlon 270 and keep the Phenom 955 for myself and build around it... so I guess it would be "cost effective." :)

I'm putting together an AM3 system for my sister to replace a 6 year old Dell that was about $400 brand new. All she uses it for is internet and email. I already purchased her a X4 955, but I'm thinking it was a waste of money for her intended purposes.
Should I have just got her a Phenom...
Yeah, I know the socket 939 platform would be operating long past it's expiration date for the purposes of modern FPS games, but I saw some used 4800+ for under $40.
Right now, all I need to get the machine back up and running is a new HDD. I just ordered an OCZ SSD, so once that arrives...
Yeah, I guess it appears that the only thing I'm really lacking is the multi-core processor. Even so, if I'm running a single core at 3.0+GHz and they're only recommending a 2.2GHz dual core... it isn't a enormous difference.
Also...

I was thinking of purchasing two HD4870 and installing an Athlon X2 4800+ CPU (dual core 2.4GHz w/ 1MB L2 cache). The 4800+ is the fastest CPU that my MB will support and NewEgg has the HD4870's for $55 right now. The entire upgrade would cost me ~$150.
This option would allow me to later...
I just got the itch to build a new PC, but I was wondering if it was worth it to put my old system back together to play MW3 for the time being... even on low settings.
