Anyone Getting Their DOOM On?

Just got to play a couple hours of this and I have to say, I'm very impressed so far. The graphics are excellent, the gameplay is excellent. The monsters are decent so far and the guns are pretty cool. Do wish you could get a little more ammunition though. Keep running out of shotgun shells and have to rely on melee attacks too much. Overall though, I'm very pleased and consider it $60 well spent.

Ninja edit: Using 4690k w/ EVGA GTX970 and running smooth as butter on High@1080

SP is fun as heck. Well polished. Runs very smooth 90FPS constant at 1440po 90hz. I'm actually surprised for once by a AAA game.

The graphics in this game are incredible, and it runs great too. Totally playable on a 970 at 4K.

What wizardry is this? 90fps+ @ 3440x1440 on a single TITAN X, I expected this game to be a lot more demanding!

This game is fast and beautiful running max everything at 1440P, GSYNC on a Titan X and I have yet to see my fps drop below 100 simply amazing!

Look at all the new OpenGL converts!

Not exactly new to OpenGL (been using it since minigl on my voodoo) but you have to admit this is the best example we've seen in a l-o-n-g time.

The performance is a bit of a double edged sword. I can't see any reason for [H] to add this to their testing suite.

I would love to see a AAA openGL/Vulkan title added to the testing suite. The nightmare texture mode alone is great to test VRAM and the game really punishes certain cards.

I'm OG (original gamer) with wolfenstein and Doom, not impressed so far, but only gave it about 15 minutes. Graphics aside, it definitely has that shooter on rails feel and nothing original. At least throw some head/weapon bobbing in so it feels like you are actually walking/running. Movement is TOO smooth. Possibly trying to be too faithful/retro, or just an oversight/lazy?

Im having a great time with the game personally, but I definitely agree with the movement animation maybe feeling a little weird... Like, the way the Imps and other characters are so fluid, a little head movement would feel nice, or at least as an option since they fortunately gave us so many.

Sometimes I cant tell if im walking or sprinting when using the controller, kb/m is obviously different but Ive already got this game set up on 4 of my comps and only two are kb friendly.

I have to say, I'm having a ton of fun with this game and am pleasantly surprised. The guns are great, the powerups/mods/etc structure isn't horrendously cumbersome. I do really wish there was a flashlight though.

Love it or hate it, I haven't any clue how someone could see similarities with CoD.

MP beta was definately like COD/Halo. Loadouts? In my DOOM or Quake? Blasphemy. The reviews/impressions of single player are what is keeping me interested in picking this up.

Maybe. Enough MP games out there, I'm pretending it doesn't exist in Doom and haven't played it.

I'm enjoying the game. I really like how it is almost an RPG with the different weapons, upgrades, abilities and challenges. Don't see how anyone could do all that in 8 hours.

Launch options I use:
+set m_smooth 0 +com_skipIntroVideo 1

for challenges the levels can be replayed. If you need certain enemies that are near a checkpoint then it is easy to go back to the checkpoint until you have them all. The rune challenges you replay from the main menu. max ammo - I have 50 now and one upgrade left.

Anyway this feels like a much much better game than the last one, which was just about jump scares.

Every single FPS game that's come out in the last 5 years have had these "RPG" elements tacked onto them to entice the Battlefield / COD crowd.

At least Doom 3 had a mission, to scare you & it achieved its goal. DOOM 2016 has a real identity crisis.

So, the stereotypical BF/COD player loves RPGs? Is this really what you're claiming?

I do not think those words mean what you think they mean.

No, the stereotypical BF/COD loves BF/COD. And games like it.

I think they mean exactly what I know they mean.

I feel I must ask one more time. Have you played this yet?

No I haven't but I don't think I need to to grasp the design elements of the game. Especially things like , Achievements, Skill / Equipment Unlocks, Perks....ect. I do plan to get around to it at some point though.

Reason I haven't is that I'm still working on The Witcher 3 and my 120GB SSD isn't large enough for the 50GB install. Going to have to purchase a larger SSD soon.

Yeah so... The only semi/remotely similar thing to "RPG" elements that exist in this game are finding some upgrades and making choices on which upgrades to prioritize.

I think it's not too RPG'ish and will add a nice incentive to replay the game campaign over with different choices. (I don't have to grind certain things over and over to increase my character level, etc.)

Anyone else think Doom will get game of the year?

Identity crisis? Well, there's the fun factor and you are certainly missing out on that. The "RPG" elements are very well placed into the game nothing major - just weapon mods and upgrades to your suit and stuff. I mean the game is fun, exciting, scary, gory, fast and furious, difficult at times... I actually enjoy the occasional pause to spend some tokens on some upgrades.. All that shit aside, the game is still great. I mean, I feel like I am playing a worthy addition to the franchise and I am Doom nut. Once I clear our a level I am having a blast going back for all the secrets - just like the original.

Fair enough, but I really feel like you're emphasizing things that are actually not emphasized in the game. They're just fun little optional mods.

They added things to the game, sure, but it is a pure id experience. Totally understand the drive space thing. Hope you get to enjoy this though. It's a good game.

2003:

"WTF This game is so dark, I'm going to go manually download a dodgy flashlight weapon upgrade!"

2016:

" WTF this game has weapon and suit upgrades? what casual trash!"

Actually, DOOM 3 was released in 2004. ;)
Yeah, I remember so many people were upset about the flashlight, but I thought it was a fun, albeit forced, piece of equipment.

As for DOOM 2016, the upgrades are actually useful and are not exactly easy to obtain; I would hardly call this game "casual", and I do have to say that this could easily make game of the year, at least in my book.

Agreed! I feel like I've worked for every upgrade I've gotten, but it happens naturally as the game progresses. No RPG grind, but they don't make it easy. Perfect really, for this sort of game.

Still having an absolute blast. Just had my first encounters with an "old friend" demon. :D something to do with a keycard.

Excellent game, another reboot worthy of the original. That's two of my favorites franchises ID have brought back from the dead, Wolfenstein being the other. My 3GB 280x is showing its age with this title, I actually feel the upgrade bug again, first time in a long time.

I set my 970's to AFR1 and they are running 65%/70% utilization with the settings I picked at 1440 resolution.

Didn't try AFR2 yet, though I might.
Thank you. I set the driver to AFR1 and it appears to work. The only issue now is the temps. I need to run the fan at 80% to keep the temps around 77C. I'm a little worried about the heat and now (of course) it is becoming summertime here so this room becomes the warmest in the house.
For kicks I went to advanced settings and switched to Ultra and the game still gives me playable fps. Need to play it more on Ultra to see if I really like (and can stand) the fps drop from what it was before but I was shocked it didn't turn into a slide show. I mean, my card is 4 years old and only has 2GB per GPU.

My fps seems to be locked at 60. How do I unlock?
You have to restart the game at least once and every time you change the resolution. Since this is an OpenGL game it will use the refresh rate your desktop is set to.
Game is super, super fun. Wow. Haven't played a game like this in so long. Just clicks right away...feels "right" on PC it's not bastardized.

5960X / TITAN X SLI manages over 100 FPS maxed out at 1440p.

Afterburner and the in-game stats viewable below:

Look at your overlay: you're only using one card;). Imagine how it will run when SLI support is officially added. If you set the texture setting to Nightmare on a Titan X the game will actually run even better. I went from 100-110 FPS to 130-144 FPS when I found out about it.
Game runs awesome on my rig. Feels like the good Doom of old.

I've noticed some quirks/bugs, though.

1. Key bindings are sort of awkward; they don't show you all the keys that are mapped, so if you accidentally unmap one, you can't go back and remap it. You have to reset it and start all over from scratch.
2. 5.1 surround sound is broken; when I switch to 7.1, surround sound works.
5.1 surround is working fine for me over 6-channel direct. You might have to change the global sound processing quality to 44.1 kHz if you set it to 48 or 96 kHz.
What are people using to take screenshots?
I just use the built-in shortcut in Steam, which is F12 by default.
I think I know what it is now. Its the fog , just like in Fallout 4(Which makes sense since their both using the same engine). Hopefully there will be a mod like "fogout" for F4 that will get rid of it. Or a good SweetFX Reshade.
Like has been said: you can't get a true sense of the volumetric effects until you see the game yourself in motion. Those particular two screenshots are taken inside a foundry where the cooling system isn't functioning. The static effects you see is the heat coming off of the molten steel.

I think reducing Doom 3 to jumpscares isn't a fair assessment, but I appreciate your viewpoint. On the time thing: I have been gathering all secrets, challenges and collectibles as I run through each mission the first time. I now have 6 hours of play time in the single player and I just finished the fourth mission last night. If the time is consistent and having 6 missions left, I am looking at 15 hours total which is actually inline with what id said. Color me surprised.

After paying attention to the narrative from both the characters and data entries I actually believe that this game takes place in the same timeline as Doom 3 but really far into the future, by like a couple hundred years.

Look at your overlay: you're only using one card;). Imagine how it will run when SLI support is officially added.

Even if I force SLI in Nvidia Control Panel, Doom still only shows one card being used. More interestingly, that screenshot shows that Doom only uses 8 cores.

Hated the beta. Started to play SP this weekend and its fantastic! I hope MP is good by the time I finish SP.

I've got the disc version on PS4.

I'm wondering if it would be worth buying it digitally.

I've got an ssd and the load time between kills is still brutal.

for anyone wondering, the code (DOOM666), at least on cdkeys, stopped working. tried to get a friend to use it and it said invalid.

Doom is everything I wanted in a FPS. I'm having way too much fun with it. I actually put down Uncharted 4 to play it. It's consumed my game time.

Man, how divided... this thread is full of praises, but the other doom thread is full of condemnation.

A lot of the condemnation is coming from people who haven't played it I've noticed. There seems to be a correlation between people who've actually played it, and people having fun with it. I have seen a minor complaint here or there, or the odd person that just didn't enjoy it for whatever reason, but it's a good game. Some people are never happy. I saw one guy that had played it through all the way, and then complained about it. If you REALLY weren't enjoying yourself, and REALLY didn't like the game, why bother playing all the way through it?

Humans...

My understanding is the MP isn't so hot. If people are judging the SP based on the MP, they are making a mistake.

I barely bother with MP any more, unless it is mandatory like say with the division. The SP is really good.

I didn't like The Last of Us...like, at all. I completed the game because I felt I needed to in order to have an opinion. I'm a mild glutton for punishment. As, I also read Twilight so I can argue with my friend's girlfriends and wives about "sexism" in media. So, I can understand why someone would play all the way through it and not like it. Though, I do question the POV if you can't point to something that's positive, as you digested it quickly...thus, it had to do something right. But, when dealing with gamers, the appetite we tend to have is aggressively compulsive. So, sometimes, logic takes a back seat to feeding a need.

When i first played the beta i was like "meh this will be just another boring cash grab game" and didnt plan on buying it. Then i saw some gameplay video from the SP and thought "wow this looks pretty neat actually" And i bought it on a whim as i didnt have anything else to do for the weekend. Well i am glad i did because this is the most fun ive had in a single player FPS in a long time. Combining the arena style mechanics, the gore, the amazing graphics, all the secrets and hidden items you can obtain i have sunk a bunch of hours into it and spent most of my weekend just playing it. If you feel like you might blaze through the game then i recommend you starting with the ultra violence difficulty as it has a nice balance of toughness without being too unforgiving.
