Dragon Age II

It's run just fine on my 6970s with DX11 and High res pack.

Although, I didn't notice a difference between normal res and high res pack. Does it need to be enabled after the install?

I look like a genius for not joining the rest of the sheeple in buying this game, LOL.

I knew it wouldn't launch well. When a game requires a Day One patch, that's NEVER a good sign, it just screams rushed and incomplete.

That proves why Blizzard and Valve make the best games.

It is done, when it's done, not a moment before.

No one cares. Go play BG2 again or something.

And you look ignorant as well.

The only "Sheeple" there are, are the ones buying this game and legitimately believing it was going to be a carbon copy of the orginal. Sequels evolve. Everyone was told the same thing; Hawk has a voice, combat has changed, inventory has changed, etc. To expect something different would be pointless and stupid.

This game, as a whole, has been enjoyful so far. As a sequel? Not so much. But I didn't expect it to be.

Play it on Hard.

In the first fifteen minutes you'll have to fight the ogre - if you follow the age old, tried and true RPG tactics, and if you level your party properly (I would go so far as to say perfectly) then you'll get through that battle... and the 20 Darkspawn that will follow.

Go in whacking away with an improperly leveled party and you will die - repeatedly.

Unlike Origins, the cool down meters for healing spells and health potions take forever to cycle through. Finally, an RPG that forces me to strategize. That Ogre battle on Hard was like a breath of fresh air. Finally an RPG that actually plays like an old school RPG.

Restart the game and play it on Hard. Trust me, you'll be glad you did. Hint: you get to level up twice before the ogre battle. Don't deviate one iota from pumping attribute points into the main attributes for your party members. Spec your Mage offensively. Watch for the ogre to charge and get your people out of the way. Spread them out across the battlefield. If your tank goes down... bye bye.

Love this game. It's actually making me think. Save files now mean something too, because (on Hard) if you level improperly then you're done.

And what would those tried and true tactics be? As well as the proper skill choices? Because as a rogue hawke with Beth and Avelline (with one party member down) I don't stand a chance against the Ogre as I am. If one party member goes down the rest are screwed. This is on Hard BTW.

Bought the game from Steamworks last night.

I can't tell you how disappointed I am in the game.

DX11 is bugged to hell, cutscenes are choppy, music flares in and out at the wrong times, 5 crashes in as many hours. Was there any QA done on this title? Totally unprofessional. The game simply isn't complete

As for the game-play, once more I am sorely disappointed. The combat is appalling, the quasi acrobatics and general speed fuelled antics are hilarious, but not in a good way. the character general is lacking, inventory is basic. The story is dull, the locations are insipid - surely Kirkwall isn't the only locale? The voice work is dire and uninvolved, sounds like some amateur dramatics school class. It's embarrassing

The game feels like it's been catered to appeal to a 13 year old with an attention deficit disorder. This game is a fucking travesty considering how good the original was.

Really really shocked Bioware took this direction with the series and sold out.

Anyone who like this game must be the aforementioned or simply have shit taste in games

Looks like it's scoring lower than the first in reviews too. Glad I didn't pay full price for this with all the overwhelmingly negative feedback around the net. Hopefully the game gets polished up and is halfway playable by the time I get around to buying it at a greatly discounted rate.

I gotta be honest I wasn't that impressed by DA:O. I guess it was hyped up for some reason. I was expecting more epic battles and storyline. Very underwhelmed.

The battles in DA 2 are very reminiscent of how the battles in Baldur's Gate felt.

I can't stress enough how in lengthening the cool down meter for health potions and heal spells the gameplay has been so drastically altered. It's a profound change really, and I have to tip my hat to Bioware for having had the guts to have made what is fundamentally an old school alteration.

Seriously, some of the console players complained that Origins was too hard - too hard! Those people are going to be seriously pissed off when they find out they can't rely on health potions the way they used to.

During the ogre battle, at the start, for example, my first time through I was playing the game as I had played Origins, assuming that my healer would heal and that all my health potions would get me through. The health potions were indeed vital, but you can't be lazy and rely on them anymore. I got my butt handed to me. That this happened during the first ten minutes was beautiful.

I don't see why people are saying that DA 2 has been dumbed down? It's actually been smartened up.

Hmm. Also, does anyone know how to make shadows look better in game? All the ones on my characters look terrible.

Having gone through the opening about 6x on Nightmare (one with each character) up until defeating the second ogre:

The tactic for being a rogue is not to waste your health potions until the final battle. Kill the enemies outside the ogre, and just have another character lead him on a wild goose chase. Once you have only the ogre left over, keep moving around until he charges. After the charge, he's typically stunned for about 3 seconds, at which point you do as much damage as possible, until you back off and have him chase you again.

It's not quick, and it is a cheap tactic, but it works.

That's not what I meant but I don't disagree. Everything was getting hyped up to this epic showdown with the Archdemon, and in the end it was a nothing battle. No epic scale, no unexpected deaths or casualties. When I got to the final battle I didn't even realize it at first. It was just "oh here it is."

I don't notice a difference between Very High and High, it basically cuts my framerate in half though.

High - around 40-50FPS at 2560x1600
Very High - around 20-30 FPS

You can check my post on the previous page.

After some more playing, I've actually started no notice the difference more and more. Mind you, it's subtle though.

Bioware games tend to launch with problems. Baldur's Gate and its sequel weren't exactly stunning examples of perfection at launch either. Unlike most developers though Bioware actually interacts with their community and pays some attention to the problems. They are normally pretty good at finding solutions to the big issues either with a patch or a work around.

To everyone having DX11 problems: Go to the PC Technical Self Help forums on the community site and the DA2 forums and make a post in the topic for it. Bioware is monitoring that topic and using it to look into problems.

Well, while playing just now I started to get black textures and the game finally crashed. This is on DX11 mode / Very High 4x AA with 16x AF. I have an I7 950 with 12gb of ram and a gtx 580. The first Dragon Age game sometimes did the same thing. I guess I will need to go with DX9 mode unless anyone else has some ideas. Thanks.

If you are using the beta drivers from Nvidia or the preview drivers from ATI already then its kind of a wait for a solution moment. No one on the official forums has any idea how to fix it yet. For now your best bet is to simply post in the "DX11 known issues and driver update" thread over there and play in DX9.

User reviews are pretty awful for this game, 3.1 on meta. Even the PC Gamer review is an anomaly for the pro reviews. I'm gonna hold off for more feedback and hopefully a sale.

The Daelish Elf camp in DA2 looks amazing compared to Origins. I distinctly remember thinking that the elf forest was really ugly and boring in Origins. However In DA2 it looks great, you see a lot of the surrounding countryside in the elf camp, wide open vistas in the background.

I wonder how many of those even played the game and are just bitching based on whatever BS they heard from a friend or Gamestop employee. DA2 is different then DAO, but some people are putting WAY too much stock in those differences.

Could be. I didn't see this much backlash when DA:O hit and it actually wasn't a spiritual successor to BG2 though.

Anyway, I will be keeping my eye on this as people get farther into the game. Hard to write it off at this point, especially having spent 4+ playthroughs on the first.

Thanks Derangel. I went over to Bioware Social and posted. I really want to play more because I'm enjoying it, but the problems are giving me a little bit of worry.

I didn't think anyone took metacritic user reviews seriously.

Ok, I got through that tough Ogre battle on Hard. I had to keep a VERY close eye on when he was preparing for a charge and make sure I sidestepped the charge. More often than not, he would charge right over his own buddies and kill them for me.

Now, the next battle that I'm having trouble with is the one with Friedrich in Kirkland. That dude is an absolute beast! He has more hitpoints than the Ogre it seems and he drinks health potions! He also stun-locks you quite easily. If my heal and potions are on cool down, my only tactic is to run around in circles waiting for the cooldowns to reset. What the efff?

Yea, not very seriously. I'm just trying to get a general feel for it since I really didn't like the demo. But even places like Gamespot, who normally give high scores to mainstream titles, is giving it an 8.0. Not a bad score, but not as good as the first.

but..but...according to some reviewers and gamers this game is easy mode with consolized combat. You just need to press your win button harder.

;)

this game sucks so much I may start sending Bioware old donuts everyone hates and tell them to fuck off and fix their shitty game.

My conclusion is that If Im going to invest a lot of time in a game I would rather go and replay the first one. Bioware sold out on this one, the end.

Can I say that I like it with out getting some long profanity filled rant about how I'm an idiot, eat rocks, and throw my poop on the wall?

3.1 on meta.
4chan trolled the metacritic page for the game, which is why it has that low score. I would guess the real users average would probably be about 7.5 or so, the game really is not as bad as some would like you to believe. I actually prefer some of the changes made to the core mechanics, 'streamlining' is usually, but not always a bad thing.

Goddamn 4chan. Forum feedback is going to determine a purchase for me, these reviews are all over the place.

There's a first time for everything. And you know all the people downvoting it probably haven't played it but are just butthurt over its directions.

Wait now, are you trying to imply that there's people out there who DON'T throw their poop on a wall?

I just bought The Exiled Prince DLC.

I bought the standard version of DA2 from D2D for $47 - and the DLC from Bioware was $5... so $52 in total. If I had bought the signature edition from the EA store they would have charged me for taxes and shipping, and it would have cost me $70.

D2D is being extremely aggressive with its pricing. Presently they have yet another sale on for 20% off everything.

For example: SHOGUN 2 Total War is selling for $49.99 at both Steam and D2D, but why would I buy it from Steam when for ten dollars less I can buy it from D2D? Same deal with Dragon Age 2. Same deal with Dead Space 2, day one. Ten dollars here, ten dollars there starts to add up.

I understand the appeal of keeping all your titles under one roof, but hey, you know what, maybe that one roof should be D2D, because right now, for day one purchases, they're beating Steam hands down.

I also am baffled by the win button argument - because for me... and again, I keep on harping about the cool down meter for health poultices and healing spells being dramatically lengthened... the game forces you to strategize. You have no choice. In Origins, as long as you had enough poultices (and why wouldn't you) you could be lazy, and just chug and hit, and chug and hit.

In DA2 you can't do that. It's not dumber. It's smarter.

I find reviews almost completely useless - positive user reviews are often written by fanboys and the professional reviews have been opinions-for-hire for years now. Likewise, you'll get people who will rate the game 1/10 because the ground textures aren't the right shade of brown.

Better off playing the game yourself and making up your own mind.

Oh no, that is not what I mean. I just want the fact that I like DA 2 to be mutually exclusive from the fact that I throw my poop on a wall. ;)

Getting some pretty bad screen tearing. Vsync on in game, and forced via CCC...

How do you add runes to items in DA2? I can order them from the market or my home, but I can't figure out how to actually use them.
