The New EVE: Apocrypha

As for the ships blowing up - it's when I'm in combat and an NPC is attacking me. But they're doing so from absurd ranges where they can't even hit me. I don't take any damage, yet the explosion/laser/blaster animation still plays as if I were being hit. i.e. My ship has a large explosion and my screen shakes, with accompanying sound effect. It really seems like a bug - and if my ship doesn't take any damage, these animations should not be playing. Witnessing my ship explode every 4 seconds for the entirety of the 10 minutes mission is annoying and breaks the immersion.

I don't care if they shoot at me, but if they're missing, have the projectile actually miss my ship. Seeing secondary explosions off the side of my ship or occur in space would actually look really cool.

So am I the only one that gets this??

Ah, what you are seeing is generally caused by lag I believe. Has something to do with the way hits are calculated in EVE, I've seen ships explode before the final volley hit's them because basically the server already knew it was going to happen and it got a little bit out of sync. You are probably right on the edge of where the missiles/guns are hitting you so it does the animation anyway since it's so close. Thats my guess. You can turn off the ship rocking and explosion effects on the esc menu if it get's really annoying.

Ya know, I never really understood why you shouldn't mix tanks? If a ship has multiple weaknesses, ...
This has been discussed ad nausium over at battleclinic.com, but the basic jest of it is to focus on one type in order to make it "good" rather than have 2 or three types of tank that are just Ok. When I say type.. I mean sheild, armor or speed, not the resist type.

In your case your Mag membrain is only adding em resist to your armor which already has decent em resistance and more importantly your opoinent has already shot through most of your tank by the time they reach your armor. Yes it helps you some, but not as much as the extra dps output that a damage mod would provide.

As for the Gyrostabilizers.....Yeah, I looked at quite a few fittings that use them and understand why they are used, however, IMO, using weaker guns just to use that one module doesnt seem like a good trade off. ...
I did not sugest the smaller guns for fitting purposes, or to be able to fit a Gstab. I sugested them due to the fact you will score far more hits with them at high radial velocity. (And as a byproduct do more dps while in orbit). If you are still scoring hits at high orbit speeds with the bigger guns then by all means fit em up. Fit the gstab and the bigger guns, now we are going someplace. :)

I just checked out adding in the MWD instead of the afterburner. With MY skills, im able to fit the MWD and still have change to spare. It bumps up my speed to 2538m/s. Id like to see some drone catch me then, hehehe.
Considering that light drones microwarp at speeds between 3 and 6k... I'm fairly confident that 2600 is NOT fast enough. You will find that most drone boat pilots keep a flight of warriors around just for dealing with pesky frigates.

Heh, yeap, you are correct. Up until the other night, I had never looked at a drones speed velocity before. Imagine the pain my jaw had when it hit the desk after viewing what their speeds were. You caught me making an ass out of u and me for assuming they didnt go that fast.

I was just soo soo used to ships that only did 170m/s on up to about 220m/s that when I created that Rifter fitting and saw I had 945m/s I thought it was a speed demon....then when I fitted a MWD.....gahhhhh, I figured id be orbiting a ship so fast I start to make it spin (not really, but virtually).

My fitting is still untested for PvP atm though. Since I was stupid and didnt disengage my rockets after killing a rat and went straight to looting someone elses wreck then got popped by Concord....I havent had the funds to rebuild this fitting yet and take it out to .4 space.

5mths into the game and I have yet to have a single PvP kill.

Ive recently aquired the skills to pilot a Retriever and have been doing some Mining in High-sec to see what kind of monies I can get with it. So far, Im not seeing too much of a difference between using 2 strip miners vs. the 3 or 4 Mining II lasers I was using. Im still pulling in approximately the same amount of ISK per hour, which is 2.5mil. I make much more per hour doing trades than mining so Im failing to see how people make BILLIONS doing mining.

I will update how things are going with my Pirate Rifter once I do get into a battle and give some feedback on if my fitting really does give a better defense than whats on paper.

So for the first time in my EVE career I have the skills to pilot a ship and not enough money for it. Got 30mil and am trying to save up for a Drake( I dont want to drop all 30 mil on a ship then be so broke I cant even fit/insure it so I need to keep saving). Ive been blitzing lvl 2 missions, so now I can do level 3 missions, but I am sure I will just get destroyed in my caracal. Another day of lvl 2 missions and I will be able to do lvl 4 missions, but even when I do get a drake I will get destroyed in lvl 4's I am guessing.

I got into a really good corp, its small but the guys leading it are obviously vets. I came into the game without a clue of what to do, but these guys have been giving me objectives one after another, and completing them is really helping move my game experience further.

@ Zinn and FrEaKy
Are you guys using the RTM or RC version of Windows 7?
Are you guys using the Steam version?

Im actually on Windows XP, just have the similar issue itself
And mine is the Steam Version

Caracals may take hours to run through a single level 3 mission. I went the other route, Moa->Ferox, tried a level 3 and barely completed it in time for the bonus (6 hours). Screw that, save up for a Drake. You can do some of the easier lvl 3s in a cruiser but it's better to get a BC and take on the harder ones.

For the explosion bug, I get that routinely with missiles and rockets that are out of range. If you're zoomed in well enough you can see the missile burn out and then a bit later the explosion effect kicks in. If you have notifications turned on you'll see that the enemy missed you and you won't take any damage.

What about level 4's in a drake? I guessing no, No even more so for the fact I only have 2-3 weeks of SP in me.

When it comes to 3s and 4s your fit becomes VERY important. Yes a drake can solo level 4s without any issues so long as its properly fit and you have the sp invested in the correct places to fly it. I'd definantly recomend Battle Cruisers 4 as one of those skills you need. The resist boost that this skill provides is paramount. Also at this point you will need to start investing in rigs and the skills that go with them. In the case of a properly fit passive\semi-passive drake Core Defence Feild Purger rigs are very important to keep your sheild regen very high.

FYI... when you can clear and salvage 4s in a reasonable amount of time it becomes quite easy to start making 40+mil an hour. So the investment in the right stuff for this ship will pay itself off quite quickly.

40+mil an hour? Your shitting me? Guess I need to leave the trades and mining alone and start doing missions, ehh?

40 mil might be a little optimistic, but certainly in the neighborhood of 25-30mil/hr consistently in a passive tank Drake. I keep one myself- if your skills aren't up to par (at least IV for every affecting skill) then make sure you check EVE-INFO or some other mission database to see what kills trigger the next spawn. Even a rigged Drake won't last in the last stage of Worlds Collide if you spawn everything at the same time.

For those looking to pvp, keep a separate pve ship you can go back to for missions so you always have a backup source of isk.

Just wanted to clarify, go Drake OR Ferox for level 3s. My post above makes it look like a Ferox won't do well and I'm running 3s with no problems. No special fit. I'm not sure how it would do in a 4 but from what I hear, resists are very important in level 4 missions so probably not well.

My question is, why fly a Drake for 4s when you can us a BS?

To make the total amount you need to efficiently cleanup everything. Isk from the rats, salvage everything, take all the loot and either sell it or reprocess down to mins to sell or build, etc. Also use your mission earned loyalty points to buy and sell faction gear, or keep it for yourselves. Lots of people just look at the rat isk and mission isk reward when running missions, but the rat isk is only a small portion of the income. You'll also notice there are skills associated with certain agents that can increase the rewards you get from specific agents. At one point I was pulling close to 12,000 loyalty points per some L4 missions if I recall, because I had trained up two social skills specific to the agent type I was using.

The drake basically beats the ferox as a mission ship because you get to choose your damage type for your primary weapon (missiles). The Ferox being a gunboat fairs better in PVP as an antisupport ship, cheap sniper, disposable face rape ship, etc. So yeah it can do missions, but I'd still rather have a drake. As always though use whatever ship you are best skilled for.

OldP hit the nail square on the head. Personaly I keep a Hurricane setup specificaly for looting and salvaging. Per mission I normaly make between 5-15mil on Bounty and Rewards and another 10-20mil on Loot and Salvage. Drake may lack in firepower vs Battleship rats, but makes up for it (In comparison to a raven) on the frig and cruiser sized ones where signature radius comes into play.

If you want to make cash mining... join a good mining corp. Mining is not a solo sport. You will find your profits go way up when you have someone giving out the full forman bonuses boosted by an orca, and of corse someone else with perfect standings and perfect refining skills, these little things all add up quite quickly. Personaly.... its far more fun to flip their cans and... .errrr I mean fly by and wave hello .. :D

Because I am breaking my own balls trying to figure out how to afford a drake!!! And dont have the skills for a BS yet either.

This little hump seems like the biggest challenge so far in the game. Working level 2's trying to get enough money to get a drake. Im sure once I have a drake and work lvl 3's or get with a m8 and do 4's itl be alot easier to go from drake to raven than it was from my caracal to drake.

Frig- better frig EZ
better frig to cruiser EZ
cruiser to BC seems difficult
BC to BS seems EZ

The game plays kind of like a sim, you compound your money making abilities as you get more and more money, but this hump just seems like its taking me longer. It might have something to do with the fact that I have just been blitzing my way from 2 to 7 standing doing lvl 2's and not salvaging. But like I said, it seems like here soon I will be self suffeciant.

another newb question: I am working for Kaalkiota corp, I am guessing because it has a quality 19 rank4 agent in .6, but I am wondering what should I spend my loyalty points on? What I really mean to say, is there something that is the norm for spending LP? Or should I spend it on whatever I want?

Oh look at Mr. Bigshot choosing his dps. I'll see your dps and raise you--range. :( :D

That's the real pisser; missile boats get rof and (kinetic?) damage bonuses while hybrids get range and shield boosts. To get the dps I have to fill all but one high slot with turrets so I can only carry 1 salvager. That means slow salvage or a trip back to get into a destroyer.

Salvage will get you there in a hurry. Get a Destroyer (preferably the Gallente one because it has 3 low slots for cargo expansions) and put 4 tractors and 4 salvagers on it with an AB. Go forth and salvage; the money will roll in.

Item drops and isk rewards suck on level 2s (and 3s for that matter). Salvage is where it's at with some bonus isk from reprocessing and/or reselling components.

Spend LP on something useful like an implant or something expensive that you can sell. But wait until you're doing 3s at minimum because you'll start making > 1k LP on a single mission, and like others say you can make > 10k per mission with L4s.

I have not been satisfying my cravings for a good sci-fi genre game lately and after seeing Steam's 21 day trial offer, I could not pass it up. However, I could not get the game to launch on Steam. It would display the EVE screen and then just close after a few seconds. Luckily activating your account through steam just gives you a 21 day version rather than 14. I was able to download and use the normal game client with no issues since my account was already set up.

That being said, I have never played EVE before and I have not had a look at the game since its beta. Upon creating a character / logging in, I find myself very overwhelmed and a bit worried that I'm making early choices that I will not be satisfied with later. Aside from reading over Evlopedia, does anyone have any recommendations on how to get started? I don't have any RL friends that play, this would be a solo / fairly casual venture whenever I find the time.

Drake (setup properly) is far better than a Ferox in PVP as well, sans sniping. My HAM Spec 5 Drake will shit on any blasterox that gets into web range :D especially since I'll be doing EM damage and he'll be doing Kin/Therm.

Reading is probably your best bet TBH, but yes it can be an overwhelming game at the beginning.

You may want to look at joining a noob friendly corp (non derogatory) that will help you understand what's going on and help you make some sane training choices.

I usually just refit my caracal with a MWD, 2 tractors, and 3 salvagers. It goes plenty fast but most missions hardley seem worth the time to cme back and salvage. I usually only salvage the big fights.

The corp I am in is looking for new players and I am sure they would love to have you. They have guides within the mailing list that will put you off in the right direction so you are working towards a good goal right from the start (wich what i was always afriad I wasnt doing) Send me a PM in game sometime if youd like "The Warpig"

Well a solo drake vs a solo ferox of course, they aren't on the same level though close. I'd still fly a ferox in fleet combat anyday though because of the range ability, instant hit of guns, and cheaper cost to replace. It's a very flexible ship.

Yeah, not trying to dis the ship too much :D I see plenty of blaster ferox in low-sec and sometimes 0.0.

It's interesting to see the different play styles, ie: fleet warfare and small short range gang. I can tell by your posts that you more so do 0.0 sniper style fleets where I do small gang in your face 0.0/low sec pew pew. I've done sniper fleets a bit and enjoyed them. Both styles are fun.

On a totally different note did you see this?

http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1144269

Manged to get 3 chars in the mosaic, but am still waiting for it to download to see for myself.

Haha that's pretty sweet. He has a text link in the OP that lists all the names, and I do have several alts in there according to that list.

1) Learn how your skill queue works and train the Learning skill to V. That will give you some time to think about things.

2) Read read readreadread - There's so much to know. Plus you have to learn the interface--do every tutorial and you'll get some free ships.

3) You'll be subscribed to the newbie help channel until you reach 1.6 million skill points. Ask questions! CCP is really good at answering them.

4) Download EVEMon - More learning but this application is essential to your skill training.

5) Download EFT The Eve Fitting Tool will help you fit modules (weapons, shields and so on) to your ship. Look for existing fittings at places like battleclinic.com--I'm not sure what the best site is.

That's a small start--good luck! EVE is fun to learn and there are a lot of helpful people.

but

Rule #1 - There are consequences to your actions and most of them are created by the players. Some of the tricks are quite devious.

Rule #2 - Don't fly a ship you can't afford to lose.

Rule #3 trust no-one with anything you care to lose. :p

Also I have a friend running an empire corp right now that you could jump into if you want I'm sure, PM me if interested.

Any of you guys going to Fanfest this year?

I will attend it for the third time myself.

I really REALLY wish that I could go. Ive rarely been outside of the state of Texas. Travel is so expensive, esp to a contractor. I dont work, I make no money. I look forward to watching some of the videos though.

You should wear a sign saying, Mashie around your neck when you see a video camera, that way, we all can say,,,,hey, there's Mashie :) :)

Pretty awesome, my main is in it and a trader alt. I may just print this out at 72" tall and however wide it gets, will take a pic of it if I do.

I actually, really and truly felt saddened when I saw I wasnt in this at all. When did they do it? Why am I not on there? :(

When I lose my mind and rejoin from time to time, I just leave the cans and go back with a destroyer+itty5 on a second account and clean up.

I've spent way too much time in that game. I'm still pissed about the missile nerf and guns having tracking :p

I rarely use any missles. How bad was the nerf? At least everyone will have the same general damage with them, ehh, excluding skills.

I like the idea of tracking on the guns. Just seems to make sense to me.

The missile nerf mentioned here is 4-5 years ago. Before that missiles did full damage to all targets regardless of speed and size. Also you could fit one cruise missile in each standard launcher turning the Kestrel into a ship that would one wolley any other frig.

LOL....Damn, so that dude is holding a grudge over something that happened 4-5 years ago:confused::confused::confused:

From the way you put it, it sounds like it was needed, which to me, wouldnt really be a nerf.

But, then again, I can also understand holding a grudge for so long.....I doubt I will ever let go of my grudge for WoW. Damn game. Finally got my level 47 Druids "special" spiked mace thinking I was going to kick some ass, but ohhhh nooo...everything levels up with ya. I did no more dmg % than I was doing at level 46. Damn game. I put my discs in the microwave so I could never ever ever ever attempt to play it again.

I put my discs in the microwave so I could never ever ever ever attempt to play it again.

Or if you get tempted, you can just download WoW off the official website. Just tryin to ruin it for ya.

Yeah, I run a Catalyst back for major salvage operations but it's nice to have one salvager handy on my missioner for smaller missions.

I think my RL job is impeding the way I play this game. When im at a job installing cabinets, I HATE wasting time. So, when I see I need to cut a filler on the table saw, I think...well, while im there, I should go ahead and cut whatever else is going to be needed instead of walking back and forth, back and forth.

I tend to do the same thing in the game and try to fit everything I think I will need on one ship. Salvage equipment, guns, ammo, armor. Hell, there was even a time I had mining lasers AND guns equiped on said ship along with everything else. Just so I wouldnt have to go back and forth.

Perhaps I should start having specialized ships for certain tasks like the rest of you guys and just bite the bullet and spend the time warping back to a station to change ships??

I also tend to do the same thing when Im trying to do Trade running. I'll spend at least an hour or more A-Tabed out of the game looking at Central. I'll find a decent route from one station to another, but then, I also look at the station im making the sale at and see what I can pick up there to take to another station, and then again at that station to see what I can take to yet another station untill I find another route which takes me back to the original station and begin the cycle again. My thoughts are, that If I leave a station, I "should" have something in the cargohold so Im not wasting time warping back with an empty cargohold. Is this a good thing to do or am I going about it the wrong way and, again, bringing my RL job habbits into the game?

Egads... I just got into Tech II medium railguns today and thought I'd really clean up. I just barely broke the tank on a couple of ships I ran into--Elder Badass Ninja battlecruisers or summat like that. That's with 3 magstabs and a full complement of 250mm guns.

Remember rails are for range, not so much DPS. That's what blasters are for. :D

Yeah, I haven't tried blasters. It's been quick & easy until now staying at 20k or 30k and wiping out bcs and cruisers.

Someone please enlighten me on what it is im doing wrong as Im trying to make some ISK.

I cannot for the life of me seem to make any decent money at ALL. Ive been trying and trying and trying. I see people tossing BILLIONS of isk around as though it was pocket change in a bubblegum machine, yet I am struggling to even break 10mil.

Im not asking for any handouts, so please, dont think that. I really really want to learn to earn my own way thru this game, but im just not getting it done.

Ive been doing trades for what seems like forever, yet the BEST ive done so far was a 4.5mil transaction on one trade. Other than that, im spending 3-5mil buying items and then selling it somewhere else for a mere 200k - 600k profit, most usually on the lower end of that spectrum. And doing that takes up 30 or more minutes to complete.

Im not asking for someones secret trade route or special item they make all their money with, but I am asking for insight as to what I need to be doing to make more than what I am currently, cause at the current rate, im going to be 40yrs old before I can afford to buy a battleship.

Ive tried mining, Ive even got my skills up to be able to use a Retriever, but even that isnt making me anything more than what I can already make by doing trades (based on time spent doing the job). I can spend an hour doing trades and maybe make 2mil or I can spend an hour mining and make maybe 2mil. It all equals the same no matter what it is im doing.

Ive heard from other people that doing level II missions get profitable, even you guys here have mentioned that before, but ive done some level II missions and end up getting blown outta the sky by a pirate or just getting my butt kicked by a rat.

WTF am I doing wrong? I want to go out and do some of my own pirating and bounty hunting, it seems to be a real fun thing to do, but I cant afford to do it. Im just not getting it at all.

Please, someone enlighten me...At very least, point me in the right direction of how you went about making money in the game. Was it VERY slow for you too? Im 5+ months into this game, yet still broke as last years ball player. Is it supposed to be this difficult? Im at a total loss of what to do.

HELP ME!!!!!!!!!
