The New EVE: Apocrypha

If you right click on an item and choose sell it usually gives you the buy order option first (the highest buy order on the market I think). If you want to hit a certain persons buy order just make what you sell match their order if I recall. I didn't know you can't use the forums, when does that expire?

Ahhhhh. I see! I just kept hitting the Advanced tab while selling (because I'm an Advanced kinda guy), but I didn't realize that set up an auction instead.

I couldn't post at the eve forums until I was off the trial account.

Maybe that's it then. I just saw a sticky post saying how they forum was experiencing a ton of spam posts, and for that reason they were blocking all new accounts from posting. I assumed that was it, but maybe it's my trial status.

I'll pay up soon.

re: Market... using buy and sell orders is quite important. this is a isk-making profession in eve, usually on a spare alt slot on account, so is worthile working out.

Green ones are available in your current location (within range), ie you will sell to the highest order, black ones are out of the buyers range & not available to you unless you move nearer/to that location.

tl;dr trading....Buy low (but just 1cent higher than the next guy), Sell High (but 1cent cheaper than next guy). Useful if you can be wait & plan ahead, or just try to make money from the bid/ask spread.

An example... I want a Rifter, but I don't need it right now and think I can get it cheaper than currently being sold for.
So I set up a buy order for a rifter with a 1 jump range (or station, system, region..) at 1 isk more than the guy below me, so mine is the best (highest) price if you wish to sell instantly and are in 1 Jump of my order. You need cash now, think the highest price being offered is reasonable and so sell straight to me (can't choose or see names, automatches to highest available price) . note here you do not have to travel, or bring to me, as long as you are within my buying range (green) it gets filled & I collect.

Basically the advanced button & view market buttons are your friend, traders make isk off the lazy / stupid /ignorant, upto you whether you fall into these categories.

Soooo....

I finally got my skills high enough to use a Mining Barge, however, Im wondering why they cost as much as they do? Is it just because they can use a Strip Mining laser?

Their cargo capacity is....well, heh, it sucks!! My Iteron III with 3 cargo expander II's can haul 11619m3. Almost 3 times the amount a Barge can carry and wayyyyyyyyy cheaper too.

Aside from the smaller cargo hold, the only other difference besides price that I see between using a Barge and an Industrial is that Strip Miner.

So, I guess the question I should be asking is, how much better is a Strip Miner vs. Mining Laser II? I can see that it takes 3minutes per cycle for a Strip Miner vs. 1min for a Miner II. But, in the 3 minutes it would take to do 3 cycles with the Miner II's, I can almost haul in the same amount as the 3min cycle for the Strip Miner. So, I MUST be overlooking something, right?

Whats a Mining Barge going to do "better" for me than what my Iteron III can do?

Edit: I also see it can mine Ice too....Is that what I should be looking into to make some "faster" ISK?

I fitted up a NICE Rifter the other day, but it cost me nearly 8mil. I realize that to some people, 8mil is a drop in the bucket, but Ive only got about 25mil to my name. Im going to loose my Rifter (regardless of its fitting) eventually, most probably real quick till I learn how to fight better, so I can afford roughly 3 fitted Rifters with what I have now. Im going to go thru those real quick, im sure. So, at the point im at in the game, I cant make the ISK fast enough to sustain doing PvP at all. Id be able to do it once in a while.

I cant seem to make more than 1.5 - 2mil at a time doing trades and just one route usually ends up being at least 7-10 jumps one way, so I went back to doing some mining and I thought getting a Mining barge would help to bring in the ISK quicker, but to me, my calculations are not adding up to anything faster than what I have already been doing.

HOW the HECKfire are people making BILLIONS of ISK?

I'm a little stuck on attributes. I have my 2 remaps available but is it worthwhile to use one to set up an intelligence / memory build at the beginning to train as many skills as possible early on? It started me off with a generic build of all stats at 8 except charisma and will power which were at 7. I got the perception implant from the stating tutorial so I've been working on the gunnery skills for the moment.

Oh and I chose Minmatar as my starting race, is that going to hurt anything? All I've read says no, but I started off with the Minmitar frigate skill so will I be restricted to Minimatar ships now?

Saw.. 8mil on a rifter is pretty steep. shouldn't really be costing that much. (pm sent)
Mining & most things in Eve works best when fully skilled/dedicated to the cause. there isn't really much isk to made in mining for the newbie, and its not much fun at all.

Rat or mission to start with - or go full Yarrrr, profit from loot... - more fun and rewarding.

mining barges are intended to mine, therefore they do it well/quicker, generally they need a hauler to jetcan mine / move the ore. but imo.. don't do it.

The optimal thing to do generally is setup EVEMon, plug in all your learning skills to lvl 4, hit the remap optimization button at the top and remap to burn through your learning skills. Then when that's done setup about a years worth of training and then hit the optimize button again and it'll give you another set of optimized stats for that skill plan. Now, I know it can be kind of hard to project that far out when you're new, and also doing nothing but learning skills in the beginning can make for a boring game. So I'd probably remap for whatever gives you the most fun right now, and then save your later remap for when you're more sure about the game.

I'll do a google search for EVEMon when I get home tonight, right now I really don't know what I'm doing. I'm going through the tutorial missions for fighter atm and just setting up training skills at night and while at work, so honestly I have no clue what I'd like to do.

The fighting aspect seems clunky and slow. Maybe I'm missing something but I just can't fly my ship. I have to select an object then select approach which just seems so out of place fighting. I hate clicking everything with the mouse and it doesn't help that the font is so ridiculously small I can't read anything. I sit 7' away using my 52" as my monitor and the font looks to be a size 4 on all the windows except for the chat window which I personally could care less about.

Mining seems fun, but I can't equip a mining laser on my ship I got from the tutorial mission, so I have to switch back to my original ship to go mine and right now I'm just kinda working through the fighter missions so I'll probably try out the mining tonight when I finish all the fighter stuff.

Haven't looked at the economic stuff yet, so can't really say much about that.

All I know is that I thought it would be cool to get a big ass ship or a small fighter and go blow the crap out of stuff or dogfight, but it apparently doesn't seem like that type of fighting is possible, or is that later on?

Thanks for the link OldPueblo. I read thru this a while back. It has one key element missing out of it though, which is how to make the ungodly amount of ISK to get a hauler to begin with, which to a relative newbie is quite a large sum of ISK.

Ive also read thru a pirate guide as well, which is where I got the bite to become one. Which is also why I have a 8million isk Frigate. I spent a whole day locked in this room learning to use EFT and Evemon in conjunction with eachother. I read thru a LOT of fittings others had come up with, read thru the comments of why one fitting was bad while another was good. And then, spent another week tinkering around with what I had learned and came up with this for a Rifter.

[Rifter, Rifter - Speed Pirate]
Damage Control II
Beta Hull Mod Inertial Stabilizers
N-Type Magnetic Membrane I

Small Shield Extender II
Initiated Harmonic Warp Scrambler I
Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters

200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, EMP S
200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, EMP S
200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, EMP S
'Arbalest' Rocket Launcher I, Gremlin Rocket

[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]

With my current skills, This fitting is "Stable @ 77%". I just recently (after I made this fitting) aquired the use of MWD's, so I may replace the "Cold Gas I Arcjet Thrusters", I'll have to give it a looksee.

You cant really appreciate this loadout by just seeing the modules, so Im going to tell ya :)

Effective HP = 3001
Shield Capacity = 752.1
Shield Effective HP = 1186
Armor = 421.2
Armor Effective = 807
Structure = 403.2
Structure Effective = 1008

EM Resistance: Shield = 12.5% / Armor = 66%
Thermal Resistance: Shield = 30% / Armor = 48.8%
Kinetic Resistance: Shield = 47.5% / Armor = 57%
Explosion Resistance: Shield = 56.3% / Armor = 23.5%

Defense: Sustained Defence Efficiency = 6 / Reinforced Defence Efficiency = 6

Fire Power = 59.3
Volley Damage = 160

Speed = 945 m/s
Align Time = 4.4
Au = 6

I created this ship to be QUICK and be able to turn on a dime, sustain damage long enough to get into a tight orbit, fast enough to elude most other weapons and probably drones too (untested) as well as deliver some hard hits.

Thoughts????

I would sugest a couple of things on your rifter.

1) Go down to 150mms. Yup you heared me right, smaller guns, unless your gunnery skills are REALLY good you will find that you will have tracking issues at high orbit speeds.

2)Make up for the smaller guns by swapping the mag membrane for a gyrostab. You shouldnt be mixing tanks anyway. ;)

When tackling cruisers keep away from drone boats (Arbitrator, Vexor) as light drones will catch you. Missile boats will be an issue as well (Caracal) as of course tracking is not a factor for missile users. As always player skill, sp and fit will vary wildly from engagement to engagement, so you never know.

I'd hold off on a remap until the 2x learning bonus is done. Give yourself some time to study all the skills and ship (and fitting) requirements, train your learning skills ASAP up to V (IV for the rank 3 skills) and use the rest of your SP to fit a ship well enough for missioning (or maybe yarrr). If you're going to mission awhile, gunnery and cap management are your friends. Don't worry about Tech II anything for now.

Once you lose your 2x bonus--and you should have some more +1 implants and at least be thinking about buying +3 implants--remap to INT/MEM and start training your ass off.

IIRC the spaceship command skills are mostly PER/WIL but you can generally train those to 3 or 4 quickly and move up from frig->cruiser->bc->bs without spending a lot of time doing it, and those ships will get you into level IV missions and make some good isk. Once you want specialized ships you'll have to start training ship skills to V but that can come later.

Once you've got a goodly amount of INT/MEM skills trained you'll have a good idea what you want to do. At this point try and plan out a year's worth of training and optimize for it.

Mathematically, this isn't the best approach but IMO it will get you some good fits and let you have fun doing it.

Faction ships are either bought using loyalty points or by using contracts. They are very expensive and are not worth it other then the coolness factor. Faction battleships are generally used for missions however so they are actually worth it. If you use them in pvp prepare to lose it because you will become instant primary. Everybody loves faction ship kills.

Cool thanks, I didn't know I had a bonus to training atm. Any idea how long it lasts?

And I'm wrong, you won't have SP left over if you train your learning skills up. Training all the rank 1 skills up to V takes 1,280,000 SP and training the rank 3 skills up to IV takes an additional ~500k. Even so, best to have a little fun and train up some fitting skills so you can mission (or whatever).

Getting your rank 3 learning skills from IV to V won't pay off in training times until you've been playing for more than a year. I suggest training the basic learning skills to IV and advanced to III or IV.

The most important thing you can do now with your skills is experiment and have fun.

Actually, assuming you train all five of the Rank 3 Learning skills to V, it takes 3 years, 10 months (give or take a few days) to fully recoop the lost time training them (~72 days worth of training.) I did the math about 2 years ago and that's what I came up with.

If you don't train all of them to V then it can take considerably less, depending on what your major focus is. If you train Presence V, for instance, but you never use Charisma as a primary stat for your training, then it's going to take you considerably longer (if ever) to recoop the lost time. Likewise if you train Eidetic Memory V and train a ton of skills that use Memory as the primary or secondary attribute, you'll recoop that lost time in about 8-10 months, depending on usage.

I agree. :D

There was a patch released yesterday. It installed just fine on my office (XP) computer, but on my Windows 7 machine, it gets halfway done installing and then says "Patch failed"

There is a link to download and install manually and the downloadable patch also fails.

I tried completely deleting and then reinstalling the game, but the same problem occurs. It just won't patch.

WTF! Can someone help me out, or has anyone at least seen this problem?

Sorry, didn't see that problem. Using the Windows 7 RC 64bit and Eve Online without any issue.

Does it say why the patch failed?

I misspoke earlier- I meant rank 1 to IV and rank 3 to III/IV. And yes, I knew it was something well beyond a year, just wanted to give a rough timeline (>1)

Anyway, sounds like there's a decent community here. If I wasn't already involved in a great corp I'd look you guys up :)

Zinn: Did you try downloading the full install and not just the web installer?

Hoping for some help. I have Win7 RTM and Steam Eve Apocrypha. I cannot get the game to run for the life of me. It loads the splash screen, and then the splash screen disappears, and then nothing.

Any thoughts? Google has not helped me at all

Castor_Troy, Ive had the same issue myself, did the install earlier today and have been dealing with the splash only screen since.
Did the font fix
Did the screensaver fix
Did the damn run in windowed 640x480
Nothing

Anyone else have any ideas?

Sorry to hear you guys having such problems, that really fukin sucks!! Since it seems to be working just fine with Win XP, is there any way for you guys to run 2 OS's. WinXP for your games and Win7 for everything else?

I would sugest a couple of things on your rifter.

Ya know, I never really understood why you shouldn't mix tanks? If a ship has multiple weaknesses, i.e. EM and Kinetic for instance, then it "seems" to me that it would be prudent to bump those weaknesses up.

The Rifter has next to zero EM resistances and also has weak Shields verses the Armor and Structure. When in a fight, the first thing to go is the Shields and seeing as how "most" people generally use Anti-Matter ammo, it makes sense to me that, for the Rifter, you should compensate for damage that is most likely to occure when in battle.

As for the Gyrostabilizers.....Yeah, I looked at quite a few fittings that use them and understand why they are used, however, IMO, using weaker guns just to use that one module doesnt seem like a good trade off. Esp when you consider the Implants as an alternative. I can get relatively the same output that a Gyro gives ya by using several different Implants instead AND I still keep my 200mm guns. Also, if im not mistaking, the Implants im talkin about are cheaper to buy too.

By mixing my tanks a bit, Ive made this Rifter that much of a harder nut to crack. This Rifters intent is for being a Pirate. Im not looking to our gun or out armor anyone with this fitting. What I AM aiming for is being able to withstand incoming fire as I am on a direct course to that ship till I get within 500m orbit range. By the time I enter into that 500m range and start to orbit, it will be (or should be) very difficult to get anything to hit me.

I just checked out adding in the MWD instead of the afterburner. With MY skills, im able to fit the MWD and still have change to spare. It bumps up my speed to 2538m/s. Id like to see some drone catch me then, hehehe.

@ Zinn and FrEaKy
Are you guys using the RTM or RC version of Windows 7?
Are you guys using the Steam version?

Works. Was having the same problem. Must be a recent update just this morning. Wasn't doing it until the past few minutes.

I was running the Steam version, but I deleted and downloaded the full version of the game. Works just fine. I don't know if this is a Windows 7 RC issue or what, but everything is peachy now :p

So I need to ask the Eve veterans - does the mission system ever get any more.... complex? Unique? Different? I'm almost 2 weeks into the game now, and I certainly seem to be running the same missions over and over. I know it's an MMO and all, which are repetitive by nature, but in this game I'm running the exact same missions multiple times. Same wording, same ship locations, etc. Not to mention all the courier missions which are inherently boring.

I love so many things about the game, but I'm starting to reach a point where I'm wondering what to do. In terms of PvE, where does one go with this game?

edit: Oh, and why oh why does my ship constantly explode, with such force like it's ready to fall apart, even though I take no damage? It has to be a bug of some sort, and it really is beyond irritating.

Personally I haven't ran a mission in probably close to two years. :) Get more into the social side of things, go help claim some space, joing a lowsec group, faction warfare, etc. As for your ship exploding, I have no idea what you mean. Is it a sound effect?

Welp, Im not a Veteran, only 5mths into the game, but I can tell ya that the level 1 missions are there mainly to get you used to using the games mechanics. The best way to learn something is to do it over and over again until it becomes 2nd nature. They are simple missions and repeat themselves for that very reason, to get you accustomed to how the game works.

If the level 1 missions are getting to be a bit of a drag for ya, try doing some other PvE stuff. Learn how to probe the systems for PvE content, such as complexes and wormholes. This one aspect of the game (probing) will take a bit of time before you fully understand how and what to do, esp when moving your probes around to get a warpable signature.

Later, you can attempt to do the epic arc missions as well as start doing level II's. It gets tougher, trust me.

I can also say, with complete honesty, you had better learn NOT to get too attached to your ship/s. Your going to loose alot of them. In addition to that, I would strongly urge you to learn how to make alot of ISK, so start paying attention to the market place and how it works as well.

This is a long haul game. It is not designed for immediate gratification, go out, shoot some ships and win everytime. However, when you do accomplish a goal, you WILL recieve lots of gratification in terms of knowing you worked hard to EARN that feeling of accomplishment. Its a kick ass feeling, very addictive.

As for your ship blowing up on its own, I have no idea bro. That sounds a bit kooky to me. Are you getting any messages on your screen, such as "Your kind is not welcome here, leave or be shot"? Check your standings and make sure your standings are applicable to the system you are in. It could be, your being 1 shotted by Concord or something due to a low standing. It happens very quickly. Have you been taking things that dont belong to you? Flipping any cans? Destroying other peoples wrecks?

Anyhoo....Just go with the flow of the game. You will become accustomed to it soon.

As for the ships blowing up - it's when I'm in combat and an NPC is attacking me. But they're doing so from absurd ranges where they can't even hit me. I don't take any damage, yet the explosion/laser/blaster animation still plays as if I were being hit. i.e. My ship has a large explosion and my screen shakes, with accompanying sound effect. It really seems like a bug - and if my ship doesn't take any damage, these animations should not be playing. Witnessing my ship explode every 4 seconds for the entirety of the 10 minutes mission is annoying and breaks the immersion.

I don't care if they shoot at me, but if they're missing, have the projectile actually miss my ship. Seeing secondary explosions off the side of my ship or occur in space would actually look really cool.

So am I the only one that gets this??
