The New EVE: Apocrypha

So I bought a Thrasher outfitted it with 5 280 mm howitzers, and ya I got to admit those Howitzers suck major ass for missions. I dropped back down to my 150mm auto cannons for the tracking speed because those howitzers do nothing but waste ammo since they can't hit the little rats.

Made me a very sad panda since almost every post I read on thrashers was like drop 280mm howitzers on it and own everything in site. Went to BC and checked out some builds for it and not a single one used the howitzers. Think I blew most all my isk doing this.

Moral of the story...check battle clinic for builds that fit what your doing :(

Soon you may find you make almost as much off of salvaging as you do from the mission and mission loot. Maybe not until you get to lvl 3's though. I've been playing for about 3 years, and it is a tough game to get started on. Finding a good corporation to join is probably THE most important thing for someone new, then evemon, and battleclinic/scrapheap-challenge.

Yeah...Its one of the most mentioned things about EVE. The learning curve is most definately a vast one. When I started to play, I thought the "curve" was meaning how to navigate thru ALL of the MANY MANY MANY menus there are, but I pretty much learned that in about 2 weeks time. But no, that is just the beginning of the curve.

IMO, the curve really starts to get tough when trying to learn the differences and meanings of all the different modules. What they do, why to use them, WHEN to use them and most importantly, when NOT to use them.

Im still in the NPC corp called CAS (Center for Advanced Studies). It has some cool people within it. I like it alot.

This game has alot to it and I am glad I picked up the game.

some of the modules you can put on your ship are just plain crap. then you already know this but you setup differently for missions then you would for pvp. i think pvp is where the game shines. its heart pumping. i still there is just to much risk vs reward. i saw a new patch coming out though and it looks promising.

arty thrasher is very good, but destroyers are not really meant for low sp. Also lulz @ the guy saying his NPC corp is cool.

Hah....

Was just re-reading some of my posts and I realized I misspoke about the mouse I was "going" to get...the G15. I had my mice and keyboards mixed up cause thats a keyboard, not a mouse...DOH!!

Anyhooo, I was kinda curious, what type of mouse do you guys use for playing EVE?

I wanna keep it under $60 bucks (shhh, dont tell the wife, she thinks Im only going to spend $45).

I dont like the Razor at all. You know how sometimes when you look at something, you just get a bad vibe from it? Thats what I get when I look at the Razor. Not saying its a bad mouse, but for me, mehh.

Im thinking either the G9, on sale for $49 @ BB or the G5 for $56 or the MX 518 for $47.

Not sure why the G5 cost more than the G9, maybe its just because of the sale, I dunno.

What do you guys recommend?

As for keyboards, I definately want a backlit keyboard. Either the Eclipse or the Cyborg with either blue or purple lighting but not going to get the keyboard yet.

Just curious what you guys use.

Also lulz @ the guy saying his NPC corp is cool.

You laughing at ME? Are you laughing AT ME? I KNOW you aint laughing at me....why I oughta......

:)

Allow me to rephrase my wording.

The people I have gotten to know in CAS are cool. Some very unusual conversations happening there sometimes, heh.

I use a razor diamondback that needs new feet and I need a new mousepad very badly. Fortunately, input devices aren't that big of a deal in eve.

NPC corp chat is like retard chat so yeah there will be interesting stuff in there. Joining a good corp is really important. My corp and our allies don't really play much anymore, eve hasn't been the same since.

How does one know what is a "good" corp and what is a "bad" one?

The people in CAS have always answered my questions when I had them to ask. I could almost swear that some of the people in there actually live in EVE. They are always there, lol.

Im not sure, maybe I'm just outfitting mine wrong, but with the artillery cannons I was getting destroyed, actually lost my ship on one of the missions. Bought another one and slapped my 200mm autocannons on there and I don't think I dropped below 30% on my shields.

The artillery was just too slow, and even with some range extenders, granted I didn't have any gyrostabilizers, but I couldn't hit any of the npc pirates. They took out my shields, armor, and hull and I only killed 1 out of 6 or so pirates. Anything to make the artillery better or are they just good for certain pvp fights?

NPC corps are not too bad in the beginning especially since there's usually someone around to chat with, some people are actually helpful, and you can't be wardecced.

Generally speaking you don't want to be a corp hopper since your employment history will stay with you forever and it just doesn't look good should you be switching corps every 30 days.

A good corp is one that is active during your usual playtime so that there are actually other players online to participate in joint activities. A good corp is one that shares your goals and values, so that you as individual can actively contribute to those goals and aren't forced/expected to work toward that you have no interest in. A good corp will provide a ship replacement program for PvP losses.

The above are pretty universally regarded as traits of a good corp. On a more subjective level I would suggest to not join a corp that only has a few members. Instead I would join a corp that has been around for a long time, has a decent web page and an active forum, has their own vent server, and has at the very least 50+ members (not all alts), so that you can be sure there are actually other players online at the time you play.

I would also join a corp that is part of an alliance so you can tap into the resource pool of the alliance, and you can enhance your chances of having active people online during your playtime.

it depends on your playstyle and "goals," but a good corp is one where you have fun! Get friendly with some dudes and hang out on their voice coms. Pew pew is a lot more fun with some entertaining people on coms.

Thanks again for the tips Thuleman, Devnull. My next question would be, how do you know which is an NPC Corp or a Player Corp? I looked in both, the Offices and Headquarters but I couldnt tell the difference.

Welp, last night I got a chance to tag along with a few [H] guys and join their Level IV mission. What a "Blast" that was. Didnt take too long either.

$$$$$$$ Just in Bounty and my 1/3 of Mission rewards, I made over 2mil. And then, they were kind enough to let me loot EVERYTHING (thanks again guys). I made an additional 9.7mil. Awesome AWESOME loot came from those wrecks. I couldnt believe it.

You guys werent exaggerating one bit....Missions give insane returns. I dont think I will be having any other problems making ISK now, hehe. I just wish I would have learned this earlier, Id have a nice FAT wallet by now.

Is it running the missions or salvaging the stuff? I blew up a bunch of NPC's and set a bookmark so I could go back and salvage but I couldn't tell how to get back. Nothing about my bookmark was in any of the menus so I didn't know how to get back there.

If you bookmarked it , just right click on a patch of empty space, scroll down the menu, select the name of your bookmark and select "Warp To"

EVE online has never been, and even though it's being constantly dumbed down, will never be, a game for the inept.

I know...that is why I love it...none of the braindead kids roaming other MMORPG's in EVE...I am only sorry that I didn't begin before...so many skills I want ;)

Funny enough once you get to the point where you can fly just about anything you want to, skills start becoming less important. I'll finish a skill and completely forget to set a new one sometimes for days. And you realize you have just as much fun on your lower trained alts as you do on your highly skilled main character.

Make it or break it question...

Is it possible to change a font size? I can't read anything even with it maxed out in options... Can't believe the font is so small.

Maybe a hack of sorts replacing font files?

Just wanted to share this little chat-session fra EVE Online:

thats definately a noob corp convo lol. i miss those.............they were always a good laugh. at least you cant get war dec'd in a noob corp. being war dec'd used to be very frustrating.

I know you can change the text size in the chat screen.. Never checked the options for increasing font anywhere else. Small font is the joy of high res monitors!

No you can't and the client run the checksum on all important files when you start it so if you change something it will just give you an error.

Maybe get some glasses if you can't read? I have no problem with the defualt font size and I run EVE on 30" screens.

20/20 on left eye and better on right eye.

20" monitor here, 1680 x 1050 and the font is tiny. Have to squint to read anything.

Getting glasses when you have perfectly healthy vision is not really what I would call a viable solution :(

The font size is way too small and needs to be allowed to be adjusted. I play on my 52" and while it is legible, it is just barely enough to make it so; this is at 8' mind you. I'm glad that you can see your font just fine from a foot or two away. But back up to 8' and tell me you can read it.

So you want to "consolize" EVE so you can play on your TV?

I hope I read you wrong...

You can't have 20/20 vision if you can't read the text on your screen, unless ofcourse you sit really far away.

I'm sitting 2-3 feet away from my screens. Each EVE client is running 1920x1200.

I sit about 3 feet from the screen.

I know my vision, due to job constraints I get it tested regularly.

Not really something that I care about arguing for :) Was just playing the trial and having hard time reading the tutorials. Really this is the first time I had to really squint to read text.

yeah but you have to get in close to attack and hope they dont have a webifier to web you with.

from looking at the loadouts on BC seems like every pvp build has a webifier or a disrupter of some sort.

Finding a good corporation to join is probably THE most important thing for someone new, then evemon, and battleclinic/scrapheap-challenge.

Why join a corporation? I still don't get it after being in two. Perkone charges no taxes and cannot be wardec'd so I can skill up and earn ISK until I'm useful... Plus they're sort of like a gentler GenMay and always online. Hell, maybe I'm where I need to be for now.

Oh, and my first 8.0+ faction standings... Now I can leave Amarr space (just need another 10k LP to buy a skill.)

because joining a corp means someone in the corp could be a ship builder and can give you great discounts on any ships you need. especially if this said corp owns space and needs help defending it.

There are a lot of reasons to join a corp. I think the main one is for friends, i came into the game with a group of friends, so forming a corp was an easy decision. There are a lot of bonuses with corp, running missions together, warring, lowsec/null, mining ops, building/inventing or getting stuff at a discount from fellow corpmates. Of course there can be negatives, like the wardecs, corp drama etc. But its all about fun and friends and I think being in a corp it's a little easier to experience that.

Here's a tale of not paying attention; I am in the process of selling off my Dreads (due to incoming changes to sov and the Dreads only becoming so useless that the best option will be to reprocess them).

So there I am monkeying around with stuff, thinking to where I need to jump one of them to get a better price, and I see that there's a buyer just 4 jumps out with a 4 jump buying range. Saves me time and money to not jump it around, 1.7bil looked good, stripped the mods, took a loss on the rigs, but meh, and sold it off.

Took me another 30 minutes to actually look at my wallet, and it didn't look quite right, so I looked through the logs, and indeed, I had sold that Dread for 1.7 MILLION instead of billion.

This is just to show that even after all this time, and having spend weeks if not months of my life in trading, it's a mistake of carelessness that happened to me. I saw 1.7 and I assumed that it was billion since that's a more or less going price for a Rev. I clicked through quickly enough to not pay attention and I moved on to the next trade.

I can shrug this loss off and not think about it, but if that's all the cash you have then such loss could easily result in rage-quitting EVE. So the lesson is; Pay attention! :)

That is indeed a good lesson Thuleman. Kinda like measure twice, cut once. Words to live by Id say.

As for the Fonts.....

I was looking around the settings and there is options to change the font size. While in game, click esc and go to the General Settings tab. There on the first column on the left, about a 1/3 of the way down, you can set Font sizes.

:)

What changes?

Did they ever end up making this game more user friendly? Because I've played a lot of MMOs but I never understood EvE at all. Any replies w/ willingness to help and I'd gladly sign up to play again because I really, really didn't get it. >>

Maximum size is 12... which is still tiny :(

Making font's "wide" helps a bit though.

It's like that for a reason.
EVE won't hold your hand.
It's a sandbox MMO, with long skill traning time in a brutal universe...easy was never part of the equation.
But the HUD/UI makes sense...once you understand it.
