Venice can suck it. its being overtaken by the X2's

man, this summer is going to f'in rule!

Not right away...

Venice is still going to be top for gaming. Until multi-threaded games make their way to the surface..

defently learned my lesson... but that being said... if by the 22nd newegg isn't selling venice im going to monarch if they still have nay left

Doubtful. Most everyone at xtremesystems moved their pre-order from Sparco to Monarch. You will probably be waiting another couple of weeks unless you order a 4000+.

i totally agree... if i had known that it was going to take this long, i wouldnt have bought the motherboard, the ram, or any other component that i didnt need in my sig... waste, because cant make use of the parts and prices are dropping as time goes by... if i look for deals on the parts i have right now, i would be saving quite a lot of money

I have everything, but am holding out on the vid card, board and processor. Hoping the vid board (800xl) comes down in price and hope either the mobo comes down in price or the new ATI will be released.

It seems holding off on the items that depreciate the fastest (price drops) is the way to go. I did buy some Twinmos from New Egg this week as its only $110. Heres what I have so far

AMD Venice 3000 or 3200 (not yet, will upgrade to DC next year - hopefully will still be 939)
DFI Lanparty Ultra D (not yet, will order with venice)
TwinMos 400/512 x 2 (done)
ATI X800XL (not yet, will order with venice)
2 x 160MB Seagate NCQ Raid O (done)
1 x 80MB Seagate NCQ (done)
NEC 3.5 (done)
NEC DVD/CD RW (done)
Lian LI 75B (done and modded for cold air intake)
3 x Panflo 80MM H1As (done)
Thermalright XP-90C (done)
1 x Panflo 92 MM H1A (done)
1 x Panflo 120MM M1A (for experiment - done)
1 80MM to 120MM adapter (for experiment - done)
Artic 5 (done)
Home Depot Ducting & Misc Parts (done - for cold air intake)
Sunbeam Reobus (done)
PC&P 510 SLI (done)

Thanks guys for you help, I think this system will be great ;)

wrong. venice will not be on top for gaming, san diego will. however small a difference that extra cache makes, it still makes that difference, and the cores should scale the same - with SD giving more performance per clock cycle.

in the same regard, an X2 at the same clock speed as a Venice would do the same, if not better, at games. i dont see any reason not to go with an X2, unless price is really a factor (which is yet to be seen)

you have to remember, that while dual core isnt going to help gaming, its definatly not going to hurt it.

if you are using your rig for pure 24/7 gaming, yeah get a single core. if you actually use your PC - X2 is the way to go, price willing (crosses fingers)

you don't have artic silver 5 on that? you know its a vital component right?

that computer is going to be loud as hell too.

thought i'd let you guys with the s754 dfi who's waiting for turion know..

IT WORKS!
(with 4/15 beta bios)

What about MSI K8N Neo? Can you show me how you are cooling it (i.e. spacer issues)? And then O/C?

Lastly, can you let me know where I can get one. I haven't seen them out.

i doubt the msi k8n neo will support mobiles. im willing to bet that only mobos that supported the old mobiles will support the new mobiles. meaning chaintech and dfi only, but chaintech isnt verified, i hope it works!

Why would it be better at gaming?

I recall seeing some benchmarks on Intel cpus before that had it the same or slower with 2 cpus (vs a single cpu)

I think whoever said we still had five more pages or so to go past 40 was on to something.

At 55, I think we have 5 more to go still yet. ;)

And at 60, no more of us will have Venice cores then we do now.

As far as current benchmarks for dual-core intels, I wouldn't use that to gauge AMD dual-core gaming performance. Netburst and the K8 are two different animals, it may be the same, but it may help as well, instead of do nothing or slightly hinder. We'll have to see I suppose?

by that logic, the k8n neo will work, as it supported the 130nm mobile clawhammers.. and i believe the oakville (mobile winchester) worked in it too. not 100% sure on that though. ;)

I wrote "2 cpus", not dual core

less overhead. one core could deal with windows crap while the other is dedicated to teh game.

hte p4 and k8 are completly different. if the second core on a p4 needs to do something during a game, its going to go though the limiting 800mhz FSB for both of them. the Hypertransport link on k8 is much more effcient and has much less latency. i would imagine the "lower" scores were just in teh margin of error anyway.

and if youre talking about SMP: thats a differnt platform. they are limited by things like registered memory, slower chipsets, the fact that hte chipset has to control both busses for the xeons, ect.

I guess we shall see tomorrow. I'm sure that at least a few benchmarks will be out there that compare single to dual core in gaming.

if you're talking about dual core, there is no hypertransport link between the cores.. instead, a "system request interface" that connects to a crossbar that connects the SRI, memory controller and ht link(s) ;)
other than that, what you say is true, amd has a much more scalable setup right now.

Yeah I meant venice being more cost effective and maybe a better overclocker...

The DC chips will definately cost more and the single cores will be faster. As you said, dual cores won't hinder games, but single cores will still be faster until multi threaded games come out.

And that's saying that the dual cores will OC as well as venice, which also remains to be seen...

you forget that dual cores ARE venice (and SD), just two of them together

if i had a choice of a dual core or a venice, regardless of price, i would go for the dual core. most definatly.

lithium726 said:

They are neither Venice nor San Diego. They are under the name Toledo.

Even without a proper name, I think it would be a reasonable assumption that the work involved in making them is more than just "putting two of them together"

And definatly is supposed to be definitely

so you think, that becuase AMD has codenamed teh core toledo, its something completly different than venice and san diego? they were announced within a month of eachother man, what else do you think toledo will be? two clawhammers? honestly, you people take words too literally - explain how toledo isnt two san diegos with a crossbar, please

forgive my mispelling:rolleyes:

if i'm right, dual core > single core with a decent method of heat removal ;)

STOP FORGETTING ABOUT SAN DIEGO!

edit: lithium is right.. for all practical purposes, toledo = 2x dan diego
however, keep in mind that the SRI and crossbar has been there since the first sledgehammers ;)

I don't know how you figure that I think it is something completely different

I did notice how you went from "two put together" to "two San Diegos with a crossbar"...

You may see "taking words too literally" as a fault, but I see it as the correct thing to do. The idea behind communication is to effectively transmit your ideas to others

You can use a crowbar to stick multiple chips together? Is this like when you solder one on top of another?

needmorecarnitine said:

me: dual core is two venice/san diego cores put together
you: its not either, its "toledo"!

dude, i dont understand where you see fault with "putting two together". fine, i left out a word: "crossbar". if i wouldve said " two san diegos slapped together with a crossbar" would you have had less of a fit?

in this case, yeah, it is a fault. anyone reading this thread (except you, it seems) wouldve known what i was talking about. this is an internet forum, not english class.

the guy i was quoting seems to think that while venice will be an amazing overclocker, X2 wont. to which i responded "X2 is venice, its two of them". i dont see any fault in this. i wasnt trying to be technical at all.

it's about as simple of an explaination as you can get too. everything is there for dual core right now, except the extra core itself.

Venice with low Vcore :D
From...s7e9h3n @ XS.....Venice 3800+ & Kingston PC3500 BH-5 on nf3:
2755yk1ya.jpg

Compared to clawhammer with tccd440..
tccd7cb.jpg

hehe, 1.76v isn't low though ;)
didn't pc ice get that same chip up to 3.8ghz later, or was that the 3500+?

Thats my point...venice can scale as high as claw with really low vcore which means lower heat load for gaming and benching. Hopefully san diegos will perform the same... ;)

Really?

I've heard rumors that Red != Blue and Dogs != Cats too.

(WTF is your point? This isn't the "USian Only Venice Rumors Here Please"-thread)

I don't think he meant it like that but rather just put the lid on any Its-available-hysteria B4 it started. ;)

[EDIT] For which Im gratefu bc then I don't have to wade throu 8 pages wo content tomorrow :)[/EDIT]
