the engine needs overhaul? if it's not using much GPU resources right now and they're up front about it then what is the problem? i'll be right there with the whiners if the game comes out like this. so far they've kept everyone apprised of the progress and they're going to work on it. how much more do you need to see before you can actually believe they're working on it? yea bioware fucked everyone over, and blizzard is slow given their manpower. trion worlds is great as far as working on their game, so maybe Anet will be to(they were great with working on the previous one).

so you're not getting a WoW clone and you're not getting ten hour downtime every tuesday. guess we should now complain about what could be instead of what is. although i might be a little irate at technical difficulties if i paid money to beta test.

I've learned to take what I can get in this industry. This game has much more potential any any other upcoming titles in just about every way. Complaining about optimization BS in beta weekend 2 is somewhat silly. They'll get to it. I also don't see any of the problems that some of you guys are QQ'ing about. I played all weekend with zero visible performance issues. I had one random crash to desktop, and that's it. No crazy framerate drops, no super low framerates in towns/events, etc. Game ran very smoothly compared to other titles I've played in BETA. Still the keyword!

Wow I finally get in and wtf? This last patch from yesterday to today has completely obliterated my fps.

Yesterday I was pulling in 40-50fps and today I'm only getting 12-15'ish fps, I haven't changed anything at all, same settings, same video card drivers, etc.

I'm having a lot of performance issues, but it's only bwe 2 and they already have said they have a lot of optimization they need to do, so I put that aside personally.

The game itself is REALLY good, and it *gasp* has actual Realm vs. Realm gameplay (World vs. World) that is well-done also! I'm not seeing any issues with "floating" while running, and don't think the animations are bad at all (I like them for the most part). Graphics are nice, gameplay is fun, it has good pve content & public quests---err, I mean rifts, oh no I mean Dynamic Events, it's got a nice little overarching story ("Personal Story") for your character, etc. etc. I had a blast in sPVP (the instanced scenarios/warfronts), gameplay is incredibly tight and fun there. WvW was fun and the maps are a great size & have depth.

Now that I've gotten to try it, I feel like I'm playing DAOC again to a large extent, but modernized... I love it! The superficial "it's still in development" things like slight bugs, minor UI polish needed (interface editor for example I'm sure will come), etc. are nothing compared to the actual gameplay & content the game has. I also really like some of the UI touches they've done, the ability to mail from anywhere, auction anywhere (and just go to pick up purchases & sale revenue at a kiosk), send crafting supplies to your bank, etc. The game's not going to have a huge gear gap/grind, and the specs are extremely flexible for each class.

Looking forward to more!

it is a bit late in the process for a game engine overhaul, they coyld just be keeping the complainers away.
An overhaul is not the same thing as optimization, whatsoever. It doesn't need an overhaul, it needs to be tuned and have better performance, that's all.

they'll announce final optimization when it happens(they've even said it was still not optimized on the blog and the reddit AMA a few dozen times). doesn't matter what number beta weekend it is or when you think it should be. there's already been more fixes applied in a short amount of time vs the competition. not much else to be said.

swtor burnouts, cool your jets. bioware wasn't a reall mmo dev, and bioware austin was all proven failure devs + college students making their first real game. it wasn't even made by the actual bioware you think of when you hear the name. don't jump the gun now, and certainly don't try to look wise after arguing with actual beta testers like me who saw the game remain unchanged for a year and had no hardmodes or high end pvp tested(where's ilum at? WvW is holing up pretty well and plays smoother with more people).
Yeah.. I was in the SWTOR beta in July 2010 for their first public testing weekend, then as a full-time tester in May 2011 onward. The beta was horrible.... basically nothing changed, and no real testing was going on of Ilum/high-end pvp (let alone at 50), no dungeon testing, no raid testing (yeah I know they claim they had an internal focus group... it all clearly was untested by the time launch rolled around), and the whole game was just a mess compared to this Guild Wars 2 beta. They're not even in the same league. Even if ArenaNet were to magically decide "hey, let's change nothing else until launch, everyone take a vacation!" at this point, it would still launch in a pretty workable state... thankfully, they won't be doing that, and the game's just going to get better until it launches :D.

This game has me psyched. Both BWE1 and BWE2 were incredibly fun and playing my Charr warrior across the countryside slaying made it awesome.

Not only that, but the devs have been fixing a lot of the major issues from BWE1 -> BWE2. Now the fixes need to be more refined.

BWE2 was miles better than BWE1. Such a huge improvement over the first one, I'm impressed and I loved playing this for most of the weekend.

It was like the more I played the more I grew fond of it, I really cannot wait for release.

I'm actually *torn* on the aesthetics of my toon. I haven't felt this way in YEARS. Do I make a Human or a Charr warrior? If I make that human elementalist, what hair style or physique am I going to make? There's easily two to three body options and at least 4 hair styles I like.

Then I think to myself, now I have my character - do I WvW or level in the zones? I can do both, at any time I want, and not worry about feeling gimped. Instead of one being superior than the other (like most MMOs) or being guided on a rail, it's a choice on which sounds more fun at the time.

Eh, my server sucked in WvW, so it ended up being a bunch of running to places and not getting any xp :)

i tried a lil WvW and it was a bit too much running around for me, it was unreal id be in a good pack all stoked get up start fighting ppl kill someone then get killed and then the closet respawn was so damn far and have to run all the back again, did that twice after that i said F this. u run so god damn slow is in this game to be tracking through a whole map to get to a point.

I was getting kind of dizzy too but I think it was because of the camera placement. I really would like to zoom out just a little bit more. Right now playing a Charr is almost like playing Over the shoulder.

I have to disagree, although I *would* like more weekend playtime. The changes made from BWE1 to BWE2 were significant enough for everyone to realize. The closer the testing periods are, the less time the developers have to make those significant changes, so it ends up just being more time for us to screw around and play and less time for them to actually fix the things they received feedback about and found during the previous test. I'm sure they have plenty of reasons why they are spreading their tests out like this, and I for one just want to see the game released fully polished and ready for us to play, versus the mess we see more often with a payed "beta" release that we are all paying to test while they fix all the things they should have fixed prior to releasing the game.

I was on Isle of Janthir and we were steamrolling the other factions. It was awesome.

My server was home to the old Reddit GW1 guild so we were all fairly competent and just made easy work of the other players. A whole lot of running from base to base dropping multiple rams on the doors and rushing the keep lord. I was incredibly impressed with how profitable WvW was overall. You get good XP, decent coin, and a metric fuck ton of karma.

They have a full-time beta 24/7 going for testing. You just aren't in it. The beta weekends are the extra, public tests where anyone who wants in gets in. If not for it, you wouldn't have tested---err, I mean in your case "demo'd" the game at all.

Even as a human, I'd like to zoom out a good chunk more... another 50% the current max amount would be good, though I'd likely keep it in a tad more. It felt very constricting as-is. Still, it's a fairly minor change for them to make difficulty-wise, so I'm sure it'll be addressed.

I went directly from playing GW1 for a few hours to trying out GW2, and the camera definitely needs to zoom out further in GW2.

I'm glad to have had the BWE experience. Coming from a dev/eng perspective, I can appreciate the ANet dev team's effort in addressing concerns and pushing updates, so having a few weeks in between is certainly understandable. For those that seem to demand an "all the time" beta, it's understandable.. but I actually would want them to get some work done beyond being spread thin of supporting & developing at the same time.

There's still much work and polish to be done to make it an exceptional game, but I'm sure they'll get there.

Came into BWE1 expecting to launch with elementalist. Came out of it loving Mesmer.

Came into BWE2 with mesmer, and left leaving it in love with Warrior. :D

Wonder what I'll really like next time around..

So far I've mostly just played an elementalist, and I've had tons of fun with it, and fully expect to make another one, when it launches "for real". Though I'm sure in the long run I'll level up at least one character of each class...

But for the moment, what sold you on Mesmer, and then Warrior?

I played a Theif, man did the Wolf Hauvron quest kick my ass about 40 times, I finally beat it with lvl 15 abilities and lucked out when I didn't get insta frozen with an ice elemental taking pot shots at me. But my god that class seems really underpowered early on, getting 1 shotted by mobs even when using the shadowstep abilities etc.

I am excited for this game though, love the fact I can jump in and out as needed and not grind forever to pvp.

I couldn't believe how many things they changed just between the two beta weekend events!

I've played every class (up to ~level 10) except the mesmer and engineer, just because those two don't really interest me. Other than those two however, I am completely torn on what to play. The classes are so much fun and so much different from each other. I'm sure I'll end up playing most of them, if not all, but I still don't know which class to make first.

oddly enough i was getting slightly dizzy the last couple times i played it now that others having the same problem i dont feel so weird, it starts to happen after a couple hours not right away but sometimes if i play enough it trains my brain not to get motion sick.
It might be the weird camera sway or the low FOV. I believe they mentioned something about the camera sway in the reddit AMA, and the low FOV is a big one mentioned by the community. I'll be looking intently for news on both of those because low FOV makes me feel how you did. One of the "fixes" seemed to be going into Windowed mode and making your GW2 window way more rectangular: Make its height about 1/3 the height of your screen, and its width as wide as your screen.

the next beta event needs to be a lot sooner this once a month crap has to go. whatever happened to friggin just beta, not this weekend beta crap really makes me mad this new idea of lets do a weekend beta b.s.
Who cares? Did you see the list of changes made from one beta event? They're getting shit done, that's all that matters to me. You're not the only one who wants to continue to play desperately, but we all just have to wait. :)

Played a thief a bit this weekend, and a warrior previous weekend + a good chunk of Friday evening/Saturday. A warrior, especially with a hammer, feels a lot like The Hulk. :p Far and away my favorite class in the game so far. Was really squishy to begin with, but around level 20 or so I believe, after getting better gear I was able to toe to toe with monsters a lot more easily. You're still not a tank and have to dodge out when health gets a bit low/damage comes fast and furious, but you stop crapping your pants every time a monster looks at you. Ended the weekend with my warrior at 45.

Thief was a blast also, loved sword/dagger and dual pistols. And steal is officially one of my favorite skills. :D Felt a lot like my warrior at the beginning, but since I only got her to level 15'ish I can't say whether they get as solid as the warrior does. Given a lot of the escape skills/utilities they have, I'd say not.

oddly enough i was getting slightly dizzy the last couple times i played it now that others having the same problem i dont feel so weird, it starts to happen after a couple hours not right away but sometimes if i play enough it trains my brain not to get motion sick.
I was feeling a bit of the dizziness this weekend as well, seemed to only happen when I was meleeing in the middle of a bunch of particle effects (WvW, large DEs). After checking some of the screenshots I had happened to take this weekend, I think I might have a guess. The particle effects were kind of out of focus, so that during a fight I get bits and pieces of sharply defined character models which are obscured by blurry looking fire and explosions and whatnot multiple times a second, assuming it confuses the brain with the eye trying to focus on the blurry effects? Idk.

My enjoyment with MMO's typically has a blend of PVE and PVP, with probably more emphasis on the latter to keep my entertainment.

Quick background, I've been more interested in the "DPS" archtype of a class than a traditional tank or healer.

Hence, Elementalists caught my eye immediately. What detracted me away from it is the lack of versatility and how vulnerable it is when stacked against other classes. You can improve survivability quite a bit if you swap into earth and water, but you forgo a lot of dps during that time frame. Plus, really good players tend to know when to focus the elementalists down first as left untouched, can wreak quick AOE havoc. Granted, I do like them quite a bit in AOE uses and WvW, but for the competitive/structured PvP scene, I'm not feeling it as much as other classes.

What swapped me to mesmer was the pretty decent DPS (when spec'd for precision, power, and balance of vitality), and maneuverability to stun/chase people down quickly. Couple that with clones to shatter and phantasms to add extra DPS, I could easily wreck in 1v1 situations and would come out on top in most 2v1/3v1. Survivability was much better than elementalist, and overall had a blast with the versatility of going dps with melee (sword/pistol) and range (staff).

Then trying out dps warrior turned out to be a boatload of fun. All that I enjoyed about mesmer came into the warrior, plus heavy armor, lol. In addition, I'd be doing really strong
damage with dual axe in melee, and rifle for range when they all run away. Nothing beats a 8K rifle shot crit to begin a fight or end it to wipe out near half their hp.

My spec for ele was either dagger/dagger or staff, mesmer was pistol/sword & staff, and warrior was axe/axe & rifle. The latter two classes had around 23K hp, 48% crit, and about 2.3K power. BWE just confirmed I'm interested in classes that can damage and live decently, without going too much in either direction.

I'll probably give necromancer a role next round just to figure them out a little better. Fights with them just take forever despite the damage being done due to their lifesteal or death shroud.

I mostly avoid PVP in MMOs, unless I'm getting bored with PVE. And so far in the BWE, I've spent 100% of my time in PVE. I tend toward glass cannon builds with ranged characters, and those usually completely fall apart in PVP. So, now I understand why you went looking for another class.

In the long run, it'd be nice if every class had a role in PVP. Though sadly, with 8 classes, there probably will be 2-3 that get relegated to the sidelines. Maybe WvWvW can keep it casual enough that it doesn't matter, but I'm not holding my breath.

So was I the only one that had decent fps Saturday then Sunday (after that patch) had absolutely terrible performance?

It baffled me why it changed.

I also play with a duo in other MMO's, and glass cannon classes in general can be supported quite well with a pure healer. Unfortuantely, in GW2, its more of a self-heal kind of emphasis to this game.. so running around with a glass cannon can be bad if you're not paying close attention at all times.

Yeah, I leveled up Ele the most in PVE so far, only until 20 though.

I played a bit of WvWvW, and it was more challenging as a mesmer due to how quick the illusions die (due to prevalance of AOE damage).

Makes me highly consider keeping my Ele as my second character though :)

I got a chance to play over the weekend and I liked what I saw except (I don’t know if it’s just me) but I hope they tweak the character movements because right now it feels a bit floaty, it needs more of a heavy feel when moving if you know what I mean. That is my only gripe with the game so far.

So when is this game going to come out? Is the general consensus from the BWEs really positive? Most things I've read have been positive.

Was there somewhere to buy the accessory items in the Heart of the Mists? I couldn't find any, just replacement amulets, weapons, and sigils (for the weapons)... I only had 14% crit on my mesmer and I think gimped stats  but still was doing really, really well with it :D, towards the end I was winning 1on1's virtually always and 2on1's most of the time. I played my Mesmer as ~22k hp and a clone-factory type build... loved it more the more I played it.

i'm a pessimist and i always say november. truthfully it's probably closer than that. overall, it's in better shape than some other games it'll be up against, and it's enough of an alternative to WoW to be interesting. although that's kind of a phyrric victory. i'd rather that the few standout issues be fixed before ship.

i have never, ever liked the skill system and while many people do i feel that adding tiers as screwed it up a bit. tiers should be removed OR utility skills in tiers 2 and 3 should be reworked to be more useful and powerful. i am still(and will forever be) of the opinion that weapon skills should be slottable by players. having just ten of each weapon skill would be great.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the system re-worked or overhauled during the first year.

A lot of people forget, but when GW1 first came out, you were not able to re-spec your character whenever you wanted. You had - I forget what they were called, but they were respec points that you earned through playing. If you went with a Fire based Elementalist and wanted to go Earth, you had to have enough of those re-spec points to do it.

You also couldn't easily change your secondary profession for a long time - even after ascension, you had to do some kind of quest and I think you had to do it every time you wanted to change - and the whole template thing happened at least 2-3 years into the game. Now we take the very flexible GW1 system for granted, but it was a very different system early on.

I think GW2 is likely to loosen up a bit as time goes by.

The tiers don't affect what utility skills you can slot, they just affect when you can purchase them. The traits are tiered.
