I think GW2 has a lot more power to leverage itself than most other games. This game has a lot of anticipation building up around it. They had 1 million people sign up for beta in 24 hours. I am not sure if this release strategy would work for every game, but I think it is genius the strategy they picked for this game. They have found a way to capitalize on the anticipation that surrounds the game.

For sure it doesn't need it due to popularity but BF3 had an open beta anyways :p

I mean it isn't a huge deal just something I would like to see. Especially for me the main draw is GW2 gameplay in terms of how it will address combat being more dynamic and different than traditional MMOs. Something like this to me I feel you have experience to really see how well you would like it personally (not even a good or bad, just a preferential thing), no third party opinions or videos can really show that well.

It's not cheaper at Gamestop, Best Buy or Amazon as far as I see, which are the only US retailers on the pre-purchase list. I suppose retailers in other countries might be charging less, though, so that could be a valid point elsewhere.

That list is just about retailers for physical copies and not about digital. For isntance Amazon doesn't even sell GW2 on their digital site. You can prepurchase at Gamefly (US digital retailer, not some obscure foreign cdkey reseller) currently for cheaper. Even confirmed here -

But the idea of going to the store for a pre-order, especially if it comes with beta access, you can cancel the pre-order if you don't like the game.

I'm not sure about the context to your post, but you won't actually get beta access if you just pre-order. You have to pre-purchase (read: pay full price) to get access to beta weekend events. This is also like buying the game on its release date, as you won't be able to return it if you end up not liking it.

Basically from what I gather, the only reason to pre-purchase the game this far back is to get access to weekend beta events. You could pre-purchase it three days out and still get the 3-day head start if you wanted to, or simply pre-order to buy it and start on the real release date.

My buddy also told me there is going to be a stress test this weekend from 12PM-6PM PST. He was not invited into the beta previously, and only recently pre-purchased. So that's probably the e-mail Buxaroo is speaking of? I pre-purchased too however, and I did not get an e-mail.

Yes, I did pay outright, but at a retail store, I can still cancel the order. I also do have the code for everything. So yeah.

If this is related to my post that conversation originated regarding non physical copies and where to purchase.

Has this been asked before:

can you happily swap servers for free like you could on GW1 or is it like most mmo's where you have to pay to transfer your character to another server?

Kind of a mixed bag.

The only restrictions on world switching will be related to not tainting WvW matches, apparently. You will select your home world upon starting your character, but you can enter any other world to quest with anyone on earth who plays Guild Wars (even if they're from another region). You can pay a fee to permanently change your home world.

Here's the reddit thread on the stress test. Apparently the invites to this were sent out completely random it seems. Plenty of people in there who pre-purchased but no invite (including me), people who didn't pre-purchase and got invites, and then people who pre-purchased and got invites. :p

Oh well, it's only for six hours anyway and will most likely be crashing a bunch, since it is a stress test afterall. Those who are invited will be making sure the game is up to par for our upcoming beta weekend events. :D

Awesome! I play with a group of friends from back home mostly, but then there are times where co-workers play the same game but are always on different servers. Now it seems I'll always have someone to play with.

it's a NDA stress test because the upcoming BWE will be having hundreds of thousands or maybe a million people.

Where is the best place to pre-order? If you pre-order are you guaranteed to get into the beta at some point?

Only pre-purchase gets you into the beta. For certain you can pre-purchase from Arenanet directly or Gamestop. I'm not sure of the other retailers.

You can pre-order from just about any other retailer but you will not get guaranteed access into the beta.

I got invited to Friday's stress test. FRIDAY THE 13TH.

BTW, to anyone else who is in can I get a link to the download client somehow? Or do I need to wait for the forums to stop giving a 502?

You won't get into beta with "pre-orders" they are making this distinction with "pre-purchases."

For pre-purchase digital copies Gamefly is the cheapest at the moment using the 10% off coupon. You can also use something like fatwallet.

Ok, so as long as I pre-purchase I should be able to get into the beta? I'm in Canada if that makes a difference.

EDIT: I just checked gamefly and I can purchase even though I'm in Canada.

Friday's stress test? I didn't get an invite but I pre-purchased from ArenaNet...?

Registering your Guild Wars 2 account lets you play the game before launch by providing you with Headstart Access and guaranteed access to all Beta Events

Since the Beta Stress Test is apparently not a Beta Event, I predict Arena.Net will be holding plenty of Beta Soirees, Beta Hootenannies, and Beta House Parties and none of us will be invited.

Do you know how many people signed up for a year of WoW only to not be invited to the MoP beta? ROFL

It's just a stress test before the REAL BWEs start. We only get to play for like 6 hours. IMO not a very good stress test.

Is the collector's edition still available for pre-purchase? I couldn't find it on Arena.net.

The stress test is in preparation for the beta event. It is only 6 hours. Those that pre-purchased and didn't get in won't be missing out on much.

I did not get an invite but my friend did. We both pre-purchased.

On that note, I got in but have not pre-purchased yet.

I "Pre-ordered" Guild wars 2 CE from gamestop.com on April 10th and just got the beta/3 day start key in my email today!!! Entered it in register.guildwars2.com with no problems. I guess Gamestop doesn't care about pre-purchasing rules.

Does anyone have a coupon for free shipping at Gamestop? I tried the $10 off $79+ coupon but it wouldn't work.

I really want the Collector's Edition but $150 + $14 tax + $7 (up to $13) for shipping is making this hurt.

I... disagree. I would think the shorter amount of time, the more people would be trying to get in, compared to a 24 hour stress test, for example. "Oh, I have all day, I'll just log in later" compared to "there's only a few hours I get to play, I have to log in now!" Can you imagine the level of stress on the servers that would occur with only a one or two-hour test?

Small stress test, but at a weird time if they wanna pack us in. 12pm-6pm I will be at work for almost all of that, does not make sense to me. Why not Saturday or later on Friday. BTW I pre-purchased and was in the 1st beta weekend, so maybe they are just recycling 1st round weekend testers..?

12-6 PST. That's 3-8 EST. A lot of people on the east coast will log in after work I think. Plus in the EU its like 8 or 9 PM start time so I think they will have no problem getting decent numbers.

Anyone have a link to the client somewhere? I haven't been invited to this event but I'd like to have the client on my machines so it'll be there when the next event (I have pre-purchased) comes around.
