The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

Amazon said:
Pre-order Guild Wars 2 on PC and get 1-Day Head-start Access to create a Guild Wars 2 account early

Re-reading what they wrote at Amazon makes me think they are talking about something else. Maybe you get to setup your account up, but not play, a day before the three day head start.

Still trying to decide between DD and regular. Looks like most of the stuff in the DD has an expiration on it or is one-time-use, and having a pet is stupid. Am I missing something? Help me decide.

I agree, thats why I didnt get it.

The only thing that last is the Wolf skill and miniature. The wolf skill sounds tempting but its an elite skill. Which means you'll most likely never bring it...

IMO i think you are best off putting the $20 to an extra bank slot/ character slot

Looking at the Gamestop website, the digital versions say
This is a pre-purchase product. Purchasing this game will result in an immediate, full charge to your credit card/PayPal account. The game will not be available for download until the release date noted above.
While the physical versions say
Billing does not occur until shipment is processed.
Pre-order low price guarantee.

It seems to me like it's a screw up on Gamestop's end since ArenaNet/NCSoft clearly communicated the difference between pre-purchase and pre-order at some point.

Yeah Amazon isn't even doing a per-purchase, just a pre-order. Ugh...

Check that link again, Amazon is listed as one of the three US companies that are doing pre-purchases.

I think the bonus they are offering might be an additional bonus that lets you configure your character but not play a day early

In a post on Reddit in reference to pre-purchase of the CE, ArenaNet claimed that Amazon (in the US and most others except France) can't do a pre-purchase in which they charge you the full price and send you a code but don't ship until some time (indeterminate, presumably months) later. We can assume this applies to the physical standard edition as well. They should be doing the digital version as an actual pre-purchase, but I don't see it on the site - apparently ArenaNet is "working with them in regard to pre-purchase and pre-order".

The code to setup your Guild Wars 2 account early will be emailed a few days before the release of the game.

If you but it from Amazon you get your code a few days before release it seems.

Honestly, if you're not getting the CE, the only reason I can see to pre-purchase anywhere other than direct from NCSoft is if you really, really want a physical box.

Gamestop is the least trustworthy source of release date info on the planet, so ignore them. They choose a random date to plug into their SKU so they can sell pre-orders.

I cannot imagine why anybody would want to give Gamestop money to reserve a purchase of a digital product. What, do you think they might run out of copies on their digital shelves?

This, 1000 times. You WILL need more bank space than you can get, and they WILL charge big bucks for extra bank space. GW1 extra bank slots that could hold 20 items cost $10 each, and you could buy four. It was the only DLC item I ever bought for GW1, and I waited until they finally held a half-off sale on them last year, because I couldn't justify $40 for bank slots.

They are not listed on GW2 retailer's website = https://buy.guildwars2.com/retailers

BUT according to their website they are doing the pre-purchase. sooo idk...

I think the list is more oriented at physical copy retailers and not digital. After all if you are on there site you can already buy a digital copy through them. From NCSofts perspective they probably would rather you order digitally through them as they likely make more.

Amazon DD for instance does not have GW2 only the shipping/physical version. I suspect all digital copies are basically "pre-purchase."

I agree with you guys. Rather than buy some consumables or a crappy elite skill, why not buy something that is useful in the game?

What crap is this, now pre purchasing is turning into separate thing?
Guild Wars 2 pre-purchase has always been a separate thing. Any store doing pre-orders is out of ArenaNet's hands, and lies solely with the store.

Actually this is my current " gripe" (if you want to look at it that way) with ordering GW2 at the moment. I'm not really looking to dive in without being able to try the game.
I don't understand. You couldn't try the game before a day one purchase on any other game anyway, right? How is pre-purchasing any different? The only negative aspect of pre-purchase is an unknown release date. On the plus side, it does give you beta weekend events. If it's that big of a deal for you, wait for day one release and buy it then. No different except paying up front, you don't have a three-day headstart, and you don't have access to beta. Either way, you don't get to play until you buy the game.

Well I did add the disclaimer as "gripe" is not exactly how I would describe it. Maybe because several of the recent games I've been interested in recently (and preordered) did have some type of way to experience it before launch without committing to a purchase makes me look to something like this. It is basically something I would like to be able to do.

I don't feel like they are obligated to provide anything though that is entirely their discretion. I mean like I said it even depends on how "closed" the betas actually end up being, for all we know they will have mass key distributions.

I think GW2 has a lot more power to leverage itself than most other games. This game has a lot of anticipation building up around it. They had 1 million people sign up for beta in 24 hours. I am not sure if this release strategy would work for every game, but I think it is genius the strategy they picked for this game. They have found a way to capitalize on the anticipation that surrounds the game.

After playing the beta and hearing other first hand reports, I'll tell you this. The game is going to fucking own. I've never heard such unanimous praise for a beta. This "beta" has more polish than just about any release I've played.

I guess I will pre-order the version with the mini-pet tonight. Does anyone know if there's going to be a cool aura when you dance in any of the versions just like the first one had?

Is this a violation of your NDA? lol j/k :D

While I never experienced any bugs between levels 1-10 on all three races, I have heard multiple people say there were plenty of bugged mobs/objects in the 20+ areas, as well as in the dungeons. They weren't too concerned about it however, as they knew it still had several months until release. I do agree with your statement about it going to kick ass though.

Pre-ordered the normal version with plans to buy a bank slot later on versus spending the money on the deluxe version.

Had marginal interest until it was announced that the game was region-locked. Now I will wait until the game is $20 locally and everyone has utterly abandoned it...

Going to wait a while until it's abandoned I think. GW1 has a pretty big following to this day.

It is cheaper elsewhere at the moment.
It's not cheaper at Gamestop, Best Buy or Amazon as far as I see, which are the only US retailers on the pre-purchase list. I suppose retailers in other countries might be charging less, though, so that could be a valid point elsewhere.

Just to make sure it's clear to all: anybody can play on any server (which are all located in one of two data centers - one in NA and one in EU) but the region-lock covers where you can play from. It's there so you're using local support and data resources (for downloading and patching) and also presumably so you have to pay the price and taxes being charged in your country. They've said they are working on something for people that travel between regions.

It sucks as a limitation, but it's also understandable.

read through this thread, something good on just about every page.

by the way people, pre-orders and pre-purchases are available until the day before the game comes out...this is not launching may 1st or any time soon after the first really public beta weekend. there WILL be many more beta key giveaways and more chances to play it at game conventions. you're use to buying in to hype and feeling pressured by the sleazy publisher yea...but you don't have to decide anything right now.

An interesting post on the Guild Wars 2 twitter.

Some one asked if the future Beta weekends will be under NDA and this was the reply.

Beta Weekend Events are not under NDA. ^RB

Everyone that is on the edge can wait until after the first beta weekend and get bombarded even more by YouTube videos.

I played the original back in beta/demo days and found it to be ok. Less engaging then wow. I then proceeded to play wow for about 2 years and discarded the genre.

I just, today, caught site of gameplay from GW2 "battlegrounds" and I am more than suitably impressed. I think I'll definitely check this out more, and possible pre-order.

I will pre-order when they give a release date. Prolly not even then just do a digital download a couple days before hand not like its gonna sell out or anything.

Many of our community members are asking about how long the pre-purchase offer will last.

Pre-purchase will run up until shortly before launch. However, we also want to maintain a high quality of service for those who have pre-purchased and are participating in the Beta Weekend Events.

With that in mind, if we max out our beta server capacity, we may *temporarily* make pre-purchase unavailable until we can bring more capacity online. Bottom line is if you want to participate in the Beta Weekend Events, don’t wait.

just a heads up.
