The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

A lot of it is also what you make of it.

I know on Tarnished Coast we are never lacking in people either for RP, WvW or Dungeons.

Our community is great, very few asshats, and overall a hell of a lot of fun if you go in without the mentality of "I have to do X this evening or it a waste". Go in, get swept up in something and just roll with it for the night.

*shrug*

Never been hardcore, never will be, dont have the mentality, or time for it. As a casual game that you arent paying monthly for, and if you arent stuck on being "loot centric", it has a lot to offer I think. It's definately not like WoW where certain people stand out like a sore thumb wagging their e-peen because they got something uber rare from a raid. Legendary weapons are about the only standout thing and those arent any better statwise, so its just for the pretty colors and effects if you want to work for them.

If you can snag it on sale, I'd say its worth it to check into, esp since there's no monthly fee. If you dont like it, you're not any worse off than if you bought any other AAA title that sucked, and if you like it, you've got something you can leave and go back to at any point without a subscription..

It seems like a lot of hardcore players are upset that the game isn't hardcore. I'm a casual player and still enjoy popping in a few times a week for some farming, a fractal run, or a dungeon. I have a great guild too with some internet and IRL friends.

The biggest irony I see is that a lot of people complained about GW2 being too "theme park" on the way to 80, but then once the game opens up at 80 and you can do whatever you want, people say they're "bored." This translates to me that to they just don't have an imagination and don't know what they want except to complain on forums.

You're giving this game WAY too much credit... it's basically the same thing at 40 as it as at 80...

On 8-27-2012, in this very thread, i posted this and i quote myself from back then:

I got slammed for that post here as if there was no tomorrow. How could I not think it was the greatest game of all time, the end of all MMO cycles, the game that changes everything. Jeez, now look at this thread.

Yeah, I got trolled hardcore for not thinking GW2 was the Messiah MMO, too.

There is more than one game in GW2. There is a leveling game- which is PvE around the world. There is a dungeon game, which is doing 5 man dungeons and fractals. There is a sPvP game which has changed recently with changes to ranking and gem rewards from tournaments. Then there is the big WvW game. All of these are what people do at 80. The game is not a treadmill or grindfest unless you grind- but they discourage that by making drop rates and xp from killing things bad- you do events, dungeons etc for money. I don't like PvE, so I don't PvE- and I'm not punished for it. But if I want to, I can go do a dungeon that lvl 30's can do and I can get lvl 80 gear. GW2 just makes sense. I know some people don't like the game, but it has everything that people hated of WoW and that's why I like it.

As far as whining about not changing the world.. then I don't know what to tell you. If you stop the npcs from blowing up the bridge, then you have no bridge. If you let the undead take the camps in Orr, then you lose them and the merchants. This is seen over and over. With the new update, they added small things to some zones that are going to change the zone over a period of months rather than days so it will slowly change. I can't find any huge gaps of logic between the consumer and arenanet- they listen and change the content for what people want. They add it all for free. The knew orr update was amazing and it DOES make a difference if you fail to hold everything. If you want to help the entire server, then go to WvW. One person can make a huge difference there. GW2 was hyped, but so is every videogame- but it is still 10x better than treadmill games like WoW.

And yes, the game is very similar at lvl 40 and lvl 80- but as a level 80, i can absolutely destroy a low level zone with my gear and look great. The whole idea of the game is that you can have fun from lvl 1 to lvl 80 and not want to skip content to get to the 'good' content. Why shouldn't I be able to do pvp after I install the game? Why should I have to gear up to do it? There is less delay in getting to the fun and less waiting around and more playing.

I started playing 2 from the start hit level 80 in about 10 days, played around in the dungeons and pvp, got some dumb gear, got super bored, quit playing for about 3 and a half months, started playing again about 2 weeks ago, still super boring, stopped playing again. Thats my personal story( just glad I didnt pay for the deluxe crap).:(:(

No, thats just one game lol. By that logic WoW should be a dozen games since theres a ton more to do than GW2...

One person can make a huge difference in WvW? What game are you playing again?

After this my wife moved to LOTR again and played my STEAM back log. Currently POE is keeping us very busy.

I play in tier 1. I was an officer in the Titan Alliance. My guild is one of the top WvW guilds. Yes, one person can make a huge difference. First, they have to be good. Second, they have to know what to do. And no, they are separate games because they have different worlds: WvW is in it's own instance, and spvp is in it's own instance, and dungeons are in their own and etc. They are separated. I was merely describing the metagame that hardcore players are going through right now, they are probably playing one of those more than another. When you burn out of one, you can go to the other. They can't please everyone though, so I can't blame anyone for not liking the game. I'm just pointing out that there is plenty to do at any level.

The game isn't bad, it just doesn't have much to do once you hit 80 and the PvP / WvW just isn't good enough to not burn out on quickly.

Even worse, leveling up a new character is considerably less fun because you just don't run into many people outside the 1-15 zones to do the dynamic events with anymore. ANet pretty much needs to give up on the 100% seperate server thing and start combining the low population zones to make the game feel less barren and more like a "social" MMO.

I've been playing GW2 exclusively since it came out. I crafted and salvaged my way into a legendary and was on my way to another high end weapon when I got banned (for an illegal 3rd party program) a couple days ago while farming the Karka in South Sun Cove.

I'd been doing this (and farming Pent/Shelter in Orr) to make money - I often do it with guildies or other people in the area.

I don't use so much as a macro or even any of the borderline mods like combat mode - because I don't want to take any chances.

There are a lot of posts about people banned for farming this area and several of them seem to have been unbanned, but my ticket is languishing.

It's a horrible feeling to be accused of something like that when you know you are innocent and just have to wait. I'd gladly pay to get premium or priority support but that is not an option.

Wondering if anyone else has been through this? I've never cheated or been banned from any game, ever.

Do you know the meaning of instanced? Protip: a separate zone is not an instance. An instance is a copy of a zone, where multiple exist for a given server. A separate zone is just another area of a game.

GW2 didn't impress me for a number of reasons, but the gameplay right off the bat just was horrid to me. The game actually sort of repulsed me, instead of even drawing me in much like every other MMO I have tried including and since EQ1.

As far as 1 person making a difference, I have no doubt they can if it's the right person... especially if it's 2 people :).

Ok, well zone and instance is a bit muddled with the introduction of server guesting. Right now if you step into a dungeon on your server, you enter an instance (unique to you and your party). If you step into WvW, you enter an instance (unique for 3 servers of your tier). When you play a sPvP match you are obviously in your own instance with your team/enemy team. If you step into the world, then you are in an instance of the world (possibly an overflow for your server- duplicate) and the entire server world is an instance or copy of another because you can switch between them on the character screen via guesting. I'm trying to clarify, but that's all it is. You choose a home server that you WvW on, but you can play in the world on any server if you want. You can even find dungeon groups cross server using http://gw2lfg.com/ and you only need to be in the area to enter the dungeon once one person enters.

tldr; zones are instanced and you aren't tied to just your server zone.

And yeah, if you don't like the combat then it's going to be impossible to play. But for me, I hated the combat for some classes like the engi and ranger but I liked the fast paced thief and complex elementalist (dagger/dagger) and found them to be polar opposites from warrior and guardian combat.

@DoubleTap, if your ticket is taking too long then you might be able to escalate it on the forum. I think they escalate the ticket after a few days if it hasn't been reviewed by them yet.

I got banned back in early november for same thing while farming in the same area. Took them 4 days but I was finally unbanned. I was roughly 70k karma shy of completing my first legendary and it was a long 4 days waiting for them to finally reinstate the account. it helps if you include your cd key and one of your characters on the accounts name and a description of what you were doing right before the ban occured in your support ticket.

Thanks for posting that - it does make me feel better. A few weeks back I read about people who had an issue and couldn't find their CD key or order info so I made it a point to locate and save it.

I asked them to review the logs - I'm always a little chatty when I farm with people. Their initial message talks about how careful they are, but I can't imagine that anyone watching me play or reviewing my chat would think I am botting.

I only check my email every other hour now, instead of every 3 minutes and I've finally played Borderlands 2.

I have tried since launch and just can't get into the game. It really is just a massive zerg fest and everything is dps based. Getting rid of the holy trinity seems to have backfired here as everyone is just dps. Gets boring real quick. I'm out. Again.

I was excited for this game and considered pre-ordering it. Played the beta and couldn't really get into it (though the graphics were good).

Glad I didn't buy it.

Shame to see all the original starters of this 300 page thread quitting, I really liked it when it first came out, game kicked ass. I, at some point, couldn't keep playing due to time constraints, but now that I see no one really plays anymore, it's saddening. :(

I got two to 80 in about 2-3 weeks, messed around with some dungeons and pvp, got bored. I recently picked it back up to play with a buddy but neither of us will play it by ourselves. The areas below 50-60 on our server are completely barren. I regret having paid for the deluxe edition.

The only reason I stopped playing the game, is because there really isn't any roles anybody plays...Wish they would have stuck with the tank, dps, healer and such...Or come up with some other system where you rely on someone else. That what makes mmo's and games like them fun...

As soon as I got my thief up to lvl80 I was done...because at least questing was fun :p

I pre-ordered, and played just about every day for a good 3 or 4 months. And I really had a good time playing it. So I definitely feel I got my money out of he game.

But after running grinding the dungeons for what seems like forever and getting 4 characters to 80, and doing the world map once, there just isn't a whole lot left to keep interest. I'll probably pick it back up when the expansion comes out.

I loggged in yesterday for the first time in a long damn time. I was playing "the witcher" for the first time and realized I hated it so I logged into GW2.

GW2 has so much potential it is a crazy shame that it isn't fun anymore.

I stopped playing for a while but for some reason the new patch brought me back in with the world boss chests and whatnot. Although now I just go for CoF runs for some quick tokens and gold. Why? I have no idea...The joy of no sub MMOs, you just keep coming back.

Oddly though, my highest alt is level 30 only. I just never have to patience to level another one even though I want one.

holy crap. I might actually have to log in to play this. Does it give any decent loot?

Nahh you just get unique weapon skins...but some of them look really cool. The game itself is fun but im sure the nostalgia will wear off as soon as I get my greatsword skin from it.

Btw im still playing this game hardcore. In 2 guilds...both are on different servers but thats ok. Server guesting works out that little problem (except for wvw...you can only repp your home world server). Been doing guild bounties/treks for commendations and learning pr0 seige placement in wvw from oceanic guilds. The game is still young and can be improved upon. I do dungeons every day..some fractals. And how can you not like Super Adventure Box? :)

Man I liked this game a lot when it came out, it'd be nice to go back in time to when it came out and everyone was buzzing. I think after I finish off Tomb Raider and Bioshock I'll head back to this. Anyone still playing on the original server most of us were on, with Toe?

Borlis Pass was the name I believe. Anyone still there? In Smoke/Fire?

My thoughts:
The game is still fun and is very casual friendly as well as grinder friendly. You can get the coolest skins by grinding shit out or have an ugly skin for cheap.

WvWvW is really fun for me. Though I understand why some don't like it.

Not a fan of the fractal system. I can see the appeal for PvE'ers but for the casual pve player, meh.

World seasonal Events - I like these and they have been creative.

No subscription and not pay to win. (Though it can be pay to look good.)

so i'm on the fence about this game, i really want to get it and play it but i don't know if i'm going to enjoy it and play it a lot..... i have $30 in gift cards to target so i could get it for $30...... any opinions? i would be playing it mostly solo as no one i know plays it and i don't get into the online community aspect much. so it would be like a single player mmo for me.

Its a great solo SP MMO if you ask me. However due to the pacing and scale, you run a high chance of just getting bored of the game by level 30. I level 2 characters to 30 solo.. then didn't touch the game for 6 months. Level 80 is max.

I started playing again recently when 2 of my friends got the game, having 10x more fun with friends. You can easily play solo to 80 etc.. and other stuff, its just for me the SP play was a bit too slow paced to pull me in for any kind of real story.

Fantastic game overall though, worth $30. I payed $60 and its the only game I haven't uninstalled in the last year.

As a single player game it's shit. One big long boring grindfest. Unless you really enjoy monotony and repetition it's not even worth $30 in your case.

Disposed you are dead on, shortest time in my game history.
poor at best. Their events suck big time.

I preordered and go into the beta. I was bored within the hour. The event system was a cluster. Run around and no direction. Some people say that the event system encourages you to explore but the hole reason to explore is to discover new things. I ran around aimless killing stuff and it felt like there was no point really. They should have implemented a traditional questing system AND events. I was lucky enough to get my money back before release. This game was definitely not worth 59 dollars.

Alot of guild wars innovations just didn't work, IMHO. That's the real problem with the game. It's a shame because I love the art style - and I think the developers put a ton of effort into it. GW2 is a good 'be careful what you wish for" scenario for MMO developers.

No class roles = no real teamwork. No UI modification = no way to monitor how well you are performing (other then not dying). Limited PvE gear progression = lowers long term interest. Open World and Events = lack of story in each zone and the world changing 'events' repeat very fast giving you a repetitive feel.

Overall I am down on the MMO genre. The best experience by far for me has been BC/Early Wrath WoW. People who are bored with this kind of experience love to hype up all sorts of new features (taken from other games) but most of them just do not work with our current level of technology.

We need major advances in AI programming to really bring MMOs to the next level I think... Dumb scripted events go boring very quickly - and the frequent attempts to 'broaden' the user base by making the game 'less hardcore' (eliminating roles and the need to have actual online "friends") only serve to make a game more boring.

Imagine how good GW2 would have been if they went with a WoW BC style game design and Tera style combat.. It would have been alot more fun if more 'hardcore.' Forget innovation - go with what works and make it work well.

Yea pretty much...I lost interest right after the whole Fractals bit...do the same crap over and over again. There's nothing captivating in this game after the grind to 80.

thanks for the replies all! looks like unfortunately for the time being i'm going to have to hold off on getting it. wish they had a trial so you could check it out first :(

I still play, only for WvW.... MMO's have always been about the pvp for me, and nothing other than DAOC had better large scale PVP than GW2 has (granted I didn't play GW1, so I can't say anything about it).

I run some solo, some small man, and some zerg fighting, and I still have a good time.

I guess you didn't do much high end play as their is plenty of class roles if you actually do dungeon speed runs.

I agree on the lack of UI customization but that could change in the future or through third party mods.

The mmorpg genre isn't in a slump but rather has hit a plateau as pretty much all current games have with technology available.

A less hardcore game is exactly what a lot of people want and if they want more hardcore they could go for a game with more grind such as Diablo 3 or WoW. It also ties in with the no subscription as I fall into the hardcore in a light mmo but damned if I can get much done in something like WoW.

AI won't be solved any time soon for any game at all not just mmorpgs. The basis and what draws the majority of players to this type of game in the first place is a online community not the actual play. I think of it as a very interactive chat room.

There are plenty of hardcore mmorpgs out there I think anet made a good decision making a lighter one compared to most of them. It does indeed have grind but if you listen to the ignorant player base that says no grind they then cry there is nothing to do in game. It is the fallacy of the genre design at it's core that there must be grind or there is no content that leads to people saying "I hit 80 nothing left to do".

Did you just call D3 and WoW hardcore? I had to grab a beer and a smoke after that statement. MMO's have plateaued, but it isn't a lack of tech. It is a change in design philosophy. Gone are the large open worlds with hundreds/thousands of players. Its more group/raid based with instancing. Also, game companies have, with great success, made their games as accessible as possible. In the process they have removed the complexity and staying power of games. Dean Hall commented this in interviews during GDC and he was spot on.
