The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

It tends to spontaneously reboot my machine with SLI 680s, but fortunately it runs fine on just one for me (also at 2560x1600). In fact I didn't even realise that SLI had been turned off when I installed the latest beta drivers, it was running so well.

Why oh why does Guild Wars 2 run like complete crap on the GeForce GTX 680? I'm not looking for troubleshooting, rather, I just need to vent...

I replaced my crossfire Radeon 6970's with a GTX 680 SLI setup. On most games the improvement is noticeable with all the bells and whistled turned on. However, in Guild Wars 2 the GTX 680's (tried with and w/o SLI) the performance is just downright appalling at 2560x1600. Inconsistent frame rates, slideshow frame rates in certain PvE areas, frame rate stutters on quick motion changes, rendering bugs, and screen flickering render it all but unplayable. Sadly, I reinstalled my Radeon setup because GW2 (where I spend most of my time) runs much smoother on it with the same settings and remains very playable even when the frame rates drop into the 20's.

To preempt the obvious questions people ask, the rest of the system is complete overkill for GW2. The main specs being: Core i7-970, 24GB DDR3-1600, and 256GB SSD. I simply cannot fathom how ANet released something that runs like complete crap on high end current generation video hardware but runs very well on 2 yr old hardware that should be outclassed in every possible way. It makes me wonder how many people are turned off from the game because this performance impacted my enjoyment of the game enough to essentially put $1000 on the shelf and run old hardware until it gets fixed. (Which is a luxury many people may not have/cannot afford.) Seriously, WTH ANet!!!!

I've got an ATI card with a computer with specs lower than yours and I have no issues. Sounds like a driver issue?

I think even you know the answer with this statement. This wouldn't necessarily be an issue with ANet then would it? Redirect some of that to Nvidia. Of course, I am just speculating.

More content coming this month and December. Can't wait. :D
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/november-2012/

According to an official post in the forum, this Lost Shore weekend event will use the same level scaling to allow everyone to check out this new place or whatever it is. SO I'm assuming its something like Mad King labyrinth where its max level monster and we are all boosted to lvl 80 (rather than just another new lvl80 map I guess (since we don't scale up when we visit a higher level area for normal maps, though I could be wrong.)

Quick search on the GW2 forum suggested this 1. use 304.79 driver.
2. turn off reflections.

It's a problem with nVidia's drivers from the look of it, as a number of people have run into the same problem.

Halloween event was great. I was only 3 pumpkins away from the stupid carving acheivment when the server restarted back to normal. Doh!

I am still amazed at the enormity of the world.

I have a level 40+ Norn Guardian am I supposed to do Ascalonian Catacombs by now? I don't quite get how dungeons work in this game.

There is no "supposed to", but AC is a level 30 dungeon with explorable mode at level 35. Caudecus' Manor is level 40/45 and then Twilight Arbor at 50/55.

Guardian level 80 now, I think I'm about 2 story missions away from the end now. Time to start looking into my exotic armor choice. I like the Honor of the Waves/Koda stats(Pow/Vit/Tough), but I don't feel like grinding dungeons for tokens to buy it. As for looks, I really hate all of the heavy armor for a human. What happened to the guy that designed all the cool looking armor for the original GW? did he die or leave Anet?

I wonder what the last 2 achievements are for the monthly.....already got my WvW kills and events achievements. :X

Completely disagree... There is huge variance in the amount of ways you can play a character... A warrior has 5 trait lines for instance and depending on how he specs can be an offensive dps, a support char, a hybrid, a ranged dps etc etc. It's also very simple to respec and play your class in a different way. In other mmo's you were tied usually to one or two very specific roles and at the end game you played with a cookie cutter build or you didnt get a group. GW2 i comparison is a fairly new game and imo people are still getting to grips with all the potential possibilities for the characters in terms of playstyle and builds.

this. well said.

this is exactly what i feel too. the game offers lots of variety in just one race/class.

the game is fantastic and offers as much depth as any MMO u play but it has that "fun factor" not that "grind factor" to me.

most things in the game have purpose and offers lots of variety and dynamics to it compared to WOW and other mmo's i have played.

It is also one of the first MMO's that makes teaming up with lower or higher levels then u easier due to the way levelling is scaled down depending on the area u do, dungeon or world events.

Im only level 40 and many of my guild members are maxed 80 and i can team up and dom dungeons, hearts, special events(halloween) etc etc together.

Its the best game hands down that i have played of its genra,

Great dynamic content, great gameplay, amazing game world design and great graphics and art work.

Stopped playing very early on, was disappointed with the spvp. Thinking about coming back though.

Nothing wrong with taking a break and coming back later, sometimes the break will give you a renewed focus on playing again.

Me too. I think I got to lvl 40, not too sure though. I'm glad it's free to play so I can come back anytime. I think I'll be ready in a couple of more months.

So now they taken one of the most hated ideas in Lord of the Rings Online (Gloom/Radiance) and added it and a Diablo style infinite random dungeon. So they've pissed off a lot of people by adding what seems to be a gear treadmill to try and please people that are going to be bored with the "new content" after a couple of hours. Not really sure what they were thinking with this.

What was the other approach? Just put more dungeons in the game and make them damn near impossible? Poeple would just bitch about that too. They need something to keep people busy, systems like the Radiance gear in LOTRO gave people some progression through end game.

It must be tough making a MMO. No matter what developers to, a whole bunch of people will get pissed off about it.

I also really liked resistance gear based fights in WoW... It was fun for me and my friends to work towards getting the gear for those fights.

Except for Mother in Black Temple, fuck that fight.

Just hit 80 yesterday. Looking forward to gearing up. Only have 1 lvl 80 exotic so far. Next is completing all dungeons (I've done up to TA) and personal story. After that, world completion.

Really enjoying this game still. Had to take a few weeks off, but that was awhile ago.

I believe the point of contention is the new content in this weekend's Lost Shore update. Specifically the new "random" dungeon.

Even more specifically, some people are stirring up a storm over the new "ascended" items which are slightly "better" than exotic items.

Based on what has been shown, speculation has run rampant about how Arenanet is approaching end game content and gear progression.

At the end of the day, the best thing to do is wait and see. Play the new content and see if there's actually a balance issue created by the new gear.

Personally, I'm excited for this new content. I have 4 level 80's in full exotics and I'm still having as much fun as day 1.

Well said, I have been following the fallout on reddit.

I can only see things getting better I am very casual and the game suits me fine so far. I have no exotics and only have one level 50 toon. I still get excited when I get a black lion key, until I open a chest and see that I got crap.

Just a great game.

Just checked out some other forums and Reddit... That bold red part is definitely true. I think people are blowing this way out of proportion. People wanted end game progression, and ArenaNet is implementing a system for it that should be fairly easy for people to understand AND it doesn't unbalance other parts of the game since you can't stick normal upgrade gems in Ascended gear.

Overall I think we may just be getting to a point as gamers where no one is really happy with anything, and people will just jump from game to game because absolutely everything sucks no matter what. ArenaNet is working on a new gear system that is so far only implemented on RINGS and BACK items. So at most, people can have three Ascended items (for now). People are blowing it up and have already determined that ArenaNet has ruined the game.

This is a first day purchase definitely.

Lolwut?

Anyone have one of the free trial passes for this weekend they could give me? Would appreciate it.

I played this over the weekend.
One of my friends quit back in Sept and gave me his account to try.
He has 3 35's and some 20's.
Thats all? Lazy ass LOL
well I tried it and its not bad, not all that good but not bad.
I only started a necro and see his points on why he said it was fail the locked skills are not fun.
but for free I guess the devs didn't put too much work into it.

I tried WVW but from what I saw you are made an 80 with junk items and spells that you have at 20.
So you are cannon fodder, no tiered WVW?
I guess again the devs just didn't spend much work on that either.

Is pvp the same way? Fuch that

Dungeons I tried the one they called story and everyone was lowered to 35 and I have a 35 guardian.
I died and said ok wipe do we start over or?
NO you run in die, over and over....WTF
4 80's and me and we died a LOT.
That dungeon is a joke and they said they are all the same.
again I guess they didn't want to spend any money.

but did they just not spend money and time, don't care or just don't give a fruck

again I was a wow player with 4 85's and a LOT of dungeon, raid and pvp time.
and this AINT no wow.
I didn't expect it to be but its not much of anything but a lot of half baked ideas with no real planning or thought.
OK so it is like wow LOL

PvP everyone has the same gear. Only changes are cosmetic. WvW is where you are upleveled with your gear so yes, you are cannon fodder in small battles. But in the zerg, you'll be fine.

If your group in Dungeons are wiping non stop, it's probably a very disorganized group. Those type of groups just die, run back, die, run back. It's horrible.

I can only speak in regards to my server, Borliss Pass, but the game does not appear to be in freefall. Our guild is growing, many of the zones I'm in are packed and people are still doing events. I haven't done PvP as much for a while because it is a zerg fest and I don't play enough to have a small group to run with like I did back in DAoC.

So ignore the few small haters on here and try it out. If you enjoy it great if not there are a lot of other great games coming out this year and next to move onto. With GW2 being free there is no reason you can't pick it up from time to time to see if changes have been made to your liking.

But for me it is still the only MMO I've played in a long while that I enjoy.

Yup, need a good group and communication. Otherwise people will pull too many and it sucks. Took me 3 tries to get through TA. First 2, had bad groups that wouldn't respawn after being killed, wouldn't revive when downed, wouldn't be careful about aggro etc. Would take us 2 hours to get to final boss then someone would have to go to bed or something.

3rd time did the whole thing in about 40 minutes with guildies.

a lot of junk

You've been bashing the game for months, even before it came out. My friends say this, my friends say that, my friends...

Look you jumped into a game and played a friends toon without understanding how the system works. If I logged into my WoW account I would be pretty lost and give up as well. I wouldn't bash the game because it sucked. I would chalk it up to not wanting to relearn how to play.

As for fixed skills? I never got this complaint. It is similar to every other MMO out but your skills aren't fixed by level or talent points, they're unlocked by what weapons you use and what combinations you use. A necromancer should literally have at least 50 skills to utilize at any given time. Switching your weapons in combat is part of the strategy to get used to.

Running a dungeon with pugs is always a bad idea, it was a bad idea in WoW, it is a bad idea in GW2. I'm not sure why this is a surprise. The dungeons are actually pretty fun and if you're wiping over and over again then it is a bad group. The only time I've ever done that was when I pugged the first dungeon which my guild specifically told me not to because it would end up just like that. Also it should be pointed out that as a Guardian you were probably the one doing the pulling which also contributed to the wipes. You were probably trying to play the Guardian like a WoW Guardian.

Certain classes fair better in WvWvW when they are bumped up. As a Thief I never had a problem but being bumped up to max level is a great idea. Yes you go in with your crap weapons and armor, but guess what? If you stay part of the team or zerg you'll be just fine. I'm guessing you just ran all over the place trying to solo people.

GW2 isn't WoW nor is it trying to be WoW. GW2 is a continuation of GW1 with some changes. Trying to compare Planetside 2 with CoD will probably net you the same frustration and learning curve.

you are correct I didn't know anything about the game.
I guess you knew all about it when you started. LUCKY YOU
I played a necro 1-21 and felt that the spells/skills were not thought out very well.
NO I don't think that tying 3 skills to a weapon and then swopping those 3 for 3 different ones on another weapon is a good idea.
Why not give me 6 and let me choose which ones I want to use.
BUT that is why they nerfed every Fin'g build I had in GW1 ( yea I played it and 2 expansions) and every time you found something that worked they nerfed it.
SO I played GW1 even if you said I didn't and I knew nothing about it.
And this is NOT GW1 where you had skills and spells and you could only choose 8.
here you can only choose weapons with pre assigned skills/spells which sucks even worse than the 8 limit from 1.

Get off your high horse and thing for yourself and if you don't like what I post don't read it.
Simple as that.

is it true about the game being in free fall?...I was in wait and see mode but if true this is troubling news

If you visit the GW2guru forums which is one of the larger GW forums on the net, you'll see lots of thread with people very concerned about how long this game is going to last due to the number of people that have already stopped playing. There are lots of good posts detailing the issues with this game and how they really dropped the ball compared to the first GW game. Lots of guilds are seeing HUGE drops in active players and the game has only been out two months which is not a good sign at all. Some went from having as many as 100+ active players in their guild to just 8-10.

GW2 is NOTHING like GW1 so lets just clear that up. Only the GW name and the lore carried over, everything else is new and worse in most ways. Its pretty though. ;)
