The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

There is currently a GW2 forum debacle going on where numerous people spent $50+++ on Black Lion Chest keys and got zero unique skins from it. The Nexon comparison is getting tossed around like crazy, not the best PR move for ArenaNet. ANet built up a lot of goodwill with players and they are currently getting slammed all over the forum.

Now I am all for some people winning and some people losing on random items like those chests. However if they are going to market the hell out of the chest and keys, the drop rate should at least be high enough where if someone drops $[over the cost of the retail game] on keys they will get something out of it. People who drop large amount of money won't be buying keys the next time around with the drop rates so low. I was going to buy a bunch of keys myself and that won't be happening now.

Also ArenaNet changed the in-game BLTC ad for Keys to show the Halloween items *before* the patch came out. I know two people (casuals) who jumped in and bought keys once they changed the ad, thinking they could get the Halloween items. They opened a bunch of chests and... Nope! Not only did they waste money, there was literally a 0% chance they could have acquired Halloween items at that point in time. Bad move by Arena Net, they should not have updated their in-game spam ads until the items were actually in the game...

Plus they should be more worried about pissing off actual players when bots out number humans in multiple zones on my server and others...

Unfortunately this is exactly what i said would happen and everyone flamed me for it. Anet can make any claim they want and build up all the goodwill they want but at the end of the day NCsoft pays the bills and has the final say in everything.

Why everyone keeps railing on Anet about this i dont know, this is all NCsoft decision making to wring as much profit out of everything they possibly can.

It only gets worse from here because the bean counters are not reading the complaints all they see are sales figures.

Such is the nature of online mmo games. Personally I don't really care for those cosmetic items because that's where F2P games milk as much cash as possible.

I don't think the comparison to Nexon is fair though. In Maple Story, you have to spend real cash just to improve on core aspect of the game such as making your character strong with godly equipment with real stat. Some skills for a certain character even need cash shop item to unlock. Its pretty much the worst F2P I've come across. its hard to find any good F2P game that can beat Maple Story when it comes to cash shop spending :p

I haven't bought keys and have no intention to. If I want to gamble I'll play the lottery for a chance at real money.

Anet should just put the skins up for sale. They'd probably make more in the long run, because all they are doing right now is pissing off the people that do buy keys. Sure they are probably making a lot in the short term, but how long do they think those people will keep throwing their money away?

Looks like ArenaNet is pulling through to help people out who bought a ton of Chests and got nothing...

Hey, everyone. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the team has taken on board your feedback and concerns.
We’d recommend not throwing away or selling the items you’ve been receiving in the Black Lion Chests, as we’ll be providing ways in which those items can be used to obtain Halloween-related items…
We’ll have further updates when they become available.
Thank you again for all your feedback.

Man I loved this game all the way until level 60...and now I just can't bring myself to play it anymore. I just felt like I beat it...I tried WvWvW but just didn't seem too much fun. I never tried PvP though, since I don't really play with anybody else, lol.

I'm going to try and login soon though and see if the halloween event, can make me want to play again.

Yes, tell everyone this AFTER they spent $50 on keys and tossed everything from the chests.

Seriously, how the fuck do they not realize this before releasing the patch? Just seems extremely shady

Well yeah they are doing this now because people are pissed... I suspect they will enable Mystic Forge recipes to convert Black Lion trash loot into Halloween skins. Regardless of how they ended up here, it is good to see them attempting to fix it.

I opened five Black Lion Chests and got the rifle skin. If I thought I had a decent chance of more skins, I would have kept going for sure since I wanted the 2H sword or staff skin. However at that point I considered myself lucky and didn't buy more keys.

Mucho props to anyone who actually kept those useless tonics :p

I think the level cap is too high considering the replay value, no one wants to level a class character to 80 to get the exotic vanity items, only to have to do it all again for another character class. One thing about the original was that level 20 took some time to reach but nothing like level 80 and at level 20, you were able to buy your exotic vanity stuff. I know some people complained that the level 20 cap in the original was too low, fair enough, make it 40 and then in a year or so, bump it to 60 and give more content to keep people playing until they hit that cap, then in a year or so again, bump it to 80 and give more content to keep playing. As it stands right now, its takes a LOT of time to reach level 80 and while its fullfilling to finally reach it, maybe you'll want to play a different characters class which brings new enjoyment to the game, but now you got to level all the way to 80 again to get exotic items, its just downright tedious and not fun.

Leveling in this game is extremely easy. Especially if you have a level 80 main. Crafting provides a huge boost in XP, and combined with a crafting XP Booster (which tend to drop in droves from Black Lion Chests), any level cap under 80 would take a few days of hardcore play to complete.

Not to mention exploring nets a huge XP boost as well. Leveling is definitely not a concern. It's class balancing/bug fixes and their Cash Shop management that need tweaking.

All very time consuming or expensive, leveling most certainly is not easy if you actually do combat to get there, even if you try to chain DE's.

Crafting is a cheat to gain levels, sorry to anyone that gets offended by that, but it really is. You're simply buying materials to gain levels quicker. You certainly won't earn enough materials from drops to gain any signifcant levels so throwing money away on materials and then using crafting guides to cheat your way to 80 isn't fun to me either. If you're going to do that, Anet might as well just offer a level 80 boost for a fee in the BLTP and be done with it.

Exploring to gain levels is really slow, and can be boring since you're not actually doing anything other than running and jumping, and many of Vista's involve jumping puzzles, some of which are difficult and can eat up a lot of time trying to perfect them.

So, sorry if I disagree, I've got over 200 hours invested and its not that I'm not playing it right, I'm not cheating to get to level 80 and I'm not new to this game or the GW series. This game simply bores me in comparison to the first. I find that the more I play, the longer I want to take a break before I play again. I never had this issue with the first game. I literally had a hard time putting down the original GW for almost the first 2 years.

I'm very dissapointed with this game the longer I've had with it. I guess I'm saddened because what I really wanted was an updated version of the original GW, graphically with new missions and storyline. I didn't want a complete overhaul to original game throwing out all of the great ideas the original did so well and replacing them with simplified game mechanics that require little thought and boring with little replay value. At least they gave me updated graphics...

It doesn't matter if the number is 40 or 200. Leveling to 80 does not take very long at all for a MMO. If you bounce around in zones to stay fighting appropriate level content, you can earn more than one level an hour.

If you goal in the game is to get Exotic items on multiple classes, I don't know what to tell you.

So you main complaint is that the game is boring, not that it isn't easy :p

I think the jumping puzzles are great on my Sylvari and terrible on Norn characters. The hit boxes are all the same size, just feels much easier with the smaller character. Could be the character animation, or the tendency to hit your head on stuff above the character...

You don't have to tell me anything, if you enjoy it, great. Its criticism from a veteran GW player. It takes on average about 45 minutes per level if all goes well and up to an hour if things don't fall into place so anywhere between 60 and 80 hours of playing. For someone that is lucky to get an hour per day on average of playtime, that's 2 to 3 months of playtime and yes I do like to explore every class, I like the variety and the joy of learning a new playstyle, but ultimately, isn't everyone playing for the vanity exotic items anyway? Its a goal that most people set for thsemslves because if gives them reason to play. If you're in the minority and you play just to play and you're still sporting that set of beginner armor and sword, more power to you, but its just not what motivates most people to play these games.

Yes, I don't have any complaints about it being too hard. I think the level caps are too high but that's really more of a time issue. For those people that can drop 3 or 4 hours per day in the game, it probably doesn't seem like an issue to them, it is for me though. And yes, the game is boring me, I really miss the ability to dual class which opened up a lot of playstyle options, I also miss the standard skill bar that wasn't tied to my weapons, I much preferred the choice of picking my skills for my skill bar from the hundreds that were available. I miss capturing elite skills, that was a great motivator to keep playing for the thrill of capping all of them, which I did. Now we only get a few elites per character and you don't even have to do anything special to get them, just need the skill points which comes in time. I miss tracking down the bosses that had the elite skills and capping them. The trait system is in some ways a replacement for the old skill system because you have lots of traits to choose from, however the problem is that you still have the same main 5 skills which honestly just gets boring to look at after a hundred plus hours of playing but I can't change my main 5 skills without changing weapons to something that I might not want to use.

I can see why someone who LOVED GW1 would not like this game. GW2 has such a massive WoW flavor that I am surprised more GW1 fans aren't complaining.

However, you say that leveling is not easy? I don't see how anyone could level on combat only and not get bored, but level is a breeze in this game almost to the point were I find myself not really caring about levels and am just enjoying exploring and experiencing the game. I may change my tune later on, but so far I am really enjoying it. However, I am coming from WoW so I am looking at this from a different expectation.

As for the "Jumping Puzzles" don't get me started...I F-ing hate them...and yet I am eternally compelled to do them!!!

Well the thing is veteran GW players are complaining, they just aren't here doing it. If you visit the GW2 Guru forums which is one of the biggest GW sites, you'll see it everywhere. It really is a massive change from the original game. I think Anet was trying too hard to capture the WoW crowd and forgot everything that made the original game unique and fresh and while I'm sure there will be many WoW players jump ship for a while, I think they're going to find this flavor of the month a bit boring after a few months because its too familiar to what's already been done for many years. GW 2 threw out all of their own original concepts from the first game to create this one which is just going to feel stale to veteran MMO players in less than a year.

Agreed on many of these points. 30 minutes into GW2, I had the 1->5 skills unlocked on most of the weapons for my class.

Now I am max level and all geared out... Still using the same exact 1->5 skills. Probably close to 100 hours of game play and I am doing the same thing I was doing 30 minutes into the game.

I think they need another tier of weapons of a way to modify the weapon abilities.

No doubt people are going to drop out in a year, I think WoW players are dropping out in 6 months and waiting for the next expansion.

I was actually going to pass on GW2 altogether and got it as a gift. Now I want my life back. It is really well done. We'll see about end game but for now Im diggin it.

Is the Halloween content limited to only high level characters? My character is only level 20 or so.

So far it's doable as a level 20 character if you have a friend to res you when you get killed in the level 30 zone.

Nope, jump right in. Success though is going to be based on your skill and possibly friends.
I have no friends (that play this game) and it's been awhile since I have played. Work and girlfriend plus other games dominate my time.

The Halloween stuff is cool, but I can't say there's anything "must-have" I want for my character. Lion's Arch looks cool at night though :).

Nah what they need is the skill, class and combat system back from the first Guild Wars. Button mashing the same 5 skills is boring and stupid.

Wait, if you don't have the time, why are you playing an MMO?

MMO's are notorious time-wasters and demand a time commitment. If you don't have the free time (hell, not a lot of people do), then why purchase a game that rewards the amount of time a player spends on it?

And leveling an ALT using crafting is far from expensive. I have stacks and stacks of lower level mats from my 80 main that are just lying around collecting dust that i use for my alts. It's easy it you just play the game, IE running DE's, farming nodes you run across, and salvaging with kits).

Because just like the first game, skill over time was promised.

And it comes as you improve playing your character. I'm not sure what the problem is there.

What I see is a bunch of people that have their cake and want to eat it too. They want a multiplayer experience that is constantly engaging and rewarding but that also caters to their own ideals of gameplay, interaction, and pacing. Sorry, doesn't work that way. I think ANet did a great job balancing the game for the casual player all the way up to the hardcore and probably has satisfied >99% of the user base. Some people are just never happy.

Because I enjoyed the original GW more than any other game I've ever played in the last 20 years, stuck with it for a good part of 6+ years. This one is starting to get stale and its only been 2 months. No subscription model means I can play anytime I want as long as I own it so I don't have complaints with that, I like Anet's business model very much and I want to support it, I just find GW 2 lacking a lot that made the original so addicting.

You're right some people are never happy but that has nothing to do with my complaints with the game. As a veteran GW player, my complaints are very much valid. The bottom line is that GW is an entirely different game and the changes are not for the best. I know good and well I'm not far off the mark by saying that active players will drop considerably within a year, in fact I would be they're dropping already but I'm sure the Christmas holiday season will pick it back up for a few more months.

Most of your complaints are that this isn't GW1, which is pretty inane. For every 1 embittered GW1 veteran that leaves the game because ANet didn't cater to them, 10 more casual players will join because the game is more accessible and just plain fun. In the end, ANet is going to make a game that makes the most people happy, which they seem to be doing.

GW2 is no more accessible than GW1, it's just more conventional. And in making it more conventional they threw away a lot of things which worked, and replaced them with half-baked and shallow systems which imitate every other MMO in existence. That's a pretty valid criticism, IMO.

In the end, ANet is going to make a game that makes the most people happy, which they seem to be doing.

Not really, of the 6 I started playing with they are all gone already. Between the lack of content, bots and other issues the population has already tanked. If this where a sub mmo that would be typical but for a sub free mmo it's a bad omen.

I won't make any claims that its dying because that's far from the truth but the reality is the game is losing people and its obvious why. No endgame = no way to keep people. Look at the amount of people on the forums that hit cap get bored and leave. It don't have to be a gear treadmill but people need that carrot to keep them coming. In most mmos you level to get to the end game and start the real fun. In gw2 you hit that cap and its basically game over, reroll.

Yep and I didn't even hit endgame. Game just stopped being fun.

I feel the same way, GW2 feels real boring when I start hitting 40+. My 4 friends that have GW2, most of them don't login anymore. Even I login maybe every couple of days and only for less than 30 minutes

Played last night for 4 levels. It was fun - I want to hit 80 with my theif. Don't know where I'll go from there but I'm the kind of person who likes 100% completion so I'll probably work on that. I'm at 63.

Blkout, I want you to define "veteran GW1" player for me :D I just want to see if I meet the requirements:

1. Has at least 6 characters on account at lvl 20.
2. Has been on a team that has cleared domain of anguish in 35 min or less (DoASC)
3. Has been on a team that has cleared the Deep in 15 min.
4. Has been on a team that has cleared the Underworld in less than 35min. (After the Dhumm update)
5. Has at least 30pts in HoM.
6. Has pugged FoW more times than he can count.

If I fit the mold of a veteran GW1 player, i would like to provide my opinions on GW2, from the perspective of another GW1 veteran player (me).

I cannot put the game down. Literally. I'm trying to get my "Legendary Weapon" achievement and I'm staring at Foefire's Essence and Sunrise from a far distance. One day they will be mine. I have 3 lvl 80 characters (Guardian, Thief, and Mesmer) that offer various playstyles in between playing them, and I equally enjoy running all of them in dungeons, WvW, and farming (thief mostly for farming since they have 25% permanenet speed boost with Signet of Shadows). Each of them are decked out in full exotic gear that I have crafted/mystic forged and partially farmed matertials myself (I am lvl 400 in Armorsmith/Leatherworks/Tailor/Jewelry/Artificer/Chef...weaponsmith and huntsman are next). I craft stuff for my guild for free, which is pretty cool actually.

Aside from the fact that I dislike WvW because it comes down to how many people can overwhelm the other(only reason I go there is to get my monthly achievement)..I love this game. :D The Halloween update...bleh...it's ok, but I look forward to more updates for GW2 content. I'll be here for a while. There is so much to do in this game it's downright overwhelming. I'm in a guild of about 25-30 people that are active on Teamspeak on average,.....every day. Some peeps like to do WvW/PvP...some like to explore for that 100% explorer or see the scenery...some like to lvl up and gear out and theorycraft builds....some would like to group up and start new toons. I participate in almost every one of these aspects in my guild (except for PvP...I would like to get my mesmer in there :D )

If you want to, you can get immersed in this game. But if you don't like it...well, I guess you don't like it. I can't force you to like it. I'm not going to even try. :) All I know is that I'm enjoying almost every minute of it, no matter what I'm doing in the game.

There are 2 immediate downsides to the game that I dislike and that is WvW zerg aspect which is simply overwhelming the other teams and ...of course...bots. They run rampant, and I don't know why Anet hasn't addressed this issue on a grand scale. It messes up my farming on cursed shore since they changed the AI of the mobs that spawn there and aggro everything, slowing down my farming process of ecto. But other than that, the game is simply the best game I have ever played....ever. Who knows maybe my feelings will change about it in the future, but that is how I feel about the game now.

6. Has pugged FoW more times than he/she can count.
