The Official Borderlands 2 Thread

Not sure you guys will believe this. But I think I resolved my stutter/low fps issue.

I had done a couple things, blocked borderlands outbound on my firewall, run steam in offline mode, updated video drivers, physx driver (there is a newer vision not included with the latest driver - http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9.12.0613-driver.html), I was messing with different AA settings, v-sync on/off, etc. Nothing fixed it. I had been reading all this stuff on the gearbox forums of people with the same issues.

I did one last thing before I went out shopping, came back and then tested.

I updated my mobo bios. Running Asus P8Z68-V LE bios revision 3901.

I was just playing for a bit, had some pretty big fights, never seemed to drop below 60fps (v-sync on).

I'll keep playing and report back any other news. I had read about one or two other people updating their bios and seeing a huge chance, might as well check it out guys.

I've been catching up on side missions since the main mission is getting a bit over my character's head. Pretty frequently an enemy will gib if I kill him with a shotgun or something with explosive damage, every now and then I'll blow a leg off. I guess you just have to "overkill" them for it to happen?

No idea.. but crits from my sniper would be more satisfying if my enemy's head was missing afterward.

haha, awesome a guy named Loggins giving you a mission called 'too close for missiles, dressed like a fighter pilot.

and honestly, don't let the 'OMG NOT TONS OF GORE' thing ruin the game for you. You don't even have time to pay attention to that stuff.

I don't think this has anything to do with region politics whatsoever. if you pay attention to detail, all the other effects in the game have been ramped up compared to the last version, like particles, environment, explosions, etc. this is a massive tradeoff on the consoles, which means other things have to go. gibs here are a relatively costly effect that I'm sure have been removed just because of this.

so they pretty much had just 2 choices for pc version, roll these gibs into the physx system that amd users would not be able to set, or tailor another performance class for them to hitch a ride on the cpu. as usual they probably just decided to do nothing, and leave it out. region restrictions would just make this decision a whole lot easier.

I'm sure the engine and meshes are already capable of this, it's just a matter of enough people whining about it for them to include the option. maybe even an ini setting, there are already standard head and robot gibs, not sure if bots are part of the physx system since I haven't bothered to compare blowing them up with this off. I wish [H] would do a detailed phsyx/performance comparison on this here.

I don't know guys I'm blowing heads off all over the place with the sniper rifle pretty much since level 1. At least I think I am? :p

Okay so little update. I'm still getting some fps dips here and there but it's much much better.

Here are some examples of dismemberment from when I was playing earlier. Both with non-explosive guns (no elemental modifications at all, actually).

How polite, it's waving at me:

Finished my first play through on my gunzerker. Beat the game with 2 other players(commando, and zero). Overall loved the game. Decent amount of challenge, tons of humor and great action. Story was a big improvement over the last.

Man I know, and I really don't want to go down that road, but I'm starting to get that vibe. Poor drops (at least for me, I'm actually using white weapons at lvl 20), difficulty level that ramps up like a brick wall..*sigh*

I was using zero, and I just gave up on him, SP with him is just brutal. I started over with the commando and things are going much, much smoother now. We'll see how it goes.

Really? I was almost thinking the game is too easy with zero; I'm at level 25. Although I got extremely lucky and had a purple sniper rifle that did freakin' 611 base damage drop at around level 19-20.

Everytime I close it because I have other things to do I load it up 10 minutes later... :D

I haven't played at all this weekend, just got home, and I'm already at 35+ hours. Love this damn game, trying to go through every side quest. Finished all 5 of the arena bandit killing quests...man that was intense.

is dismemberment tied to physx?

just asking...

No, I have it as low as it goes and have seen people burst like balloons with chunks flying about plenty of times. It just doesn't happen every single time.

Did I miss something here, or is there no-longer specific weapon type leveling based upon your usage of that weapon to make kills?

The increases were never huge, but they did give you a reason to use other weapons in BL1.

Gearbox already said they had to tone down the dismemberment for other countries. It's official.

They changed them to Bad Ass levels. Look at the challenge screen.

Not looking for spoilers but was the ending better? That was my major let down in the first one. The ending was god awful. I remember when I beat it I was in shock thinking "Really I just went through all that for that shit ending?".

Yeah, one of the artist directors said this:

You don't need a petition.

It matters what our fans think and we have fans all over the place. Unfortunately, not every place in the world is OK with heads that explode, even when the eyes pop out and bounce off walls.

But your feedback has been heard and we will look at ways that we can bring this back but in a way that is acceptable to different cultures.

Speaking of visual effects, in the next Borderlands what would you like to see most?

Thank you.

Jim Sanders
Director of Visual Effects and Technical Art
Gearbox Software

Basically yes, it is confirmed that they toned it down. Which is disappointing and I hope they allow it to be truly uncensored in a patch.

thanks for finding the quote. i was too lazy to go looking for it.

What was your time played?

Just started a new game. Man I gotta be honest this really feels like coming home. I don't know feels different than the expansions. The music is slick and just excites me. I'm just happy to be playing more borderlands.

Should I be saving the badass tokens? Piscian18 on steam if you wanna join.

People either aren't doing many sidequests and/or are going without sleep and God knows what else to be already finishing playthroughs of this thing. ;)

I'll second the homecoming comment. I love these games. I hope they keep making them. As long as they don't fall into the Call of Madden rut, it's gold. :)

I'm almost lvl 30 with 37hrs of gameplay. (I would say maybe 2hr afk in there overall).

I'm doing every sidequest I can find, and some of them are fairly time consuming (Gang wars one comes to mind).

I don't believe there are any upsides to stockpilling badass tokens.

You can even turn the modifier off if you wish.

i loved bl1 and am thinking of picking this up. to play with other people do you have to know people with the game, or is there some sort of matchmaking or something? the answer will determine whether i get it or not... none of my peeps play it.

What was your time played?
About 30 hours. Did a lot of side quests, listened to the audio, and did a decent amount of exploring.

What the... just from normal guns?

So, they "confirm" toned-down gore, but you're showing quite the opposite?
Anyone else here getting that same? It seems most are not across the board.

This is the problem. I've heard some reports of people actually getting the dismemberment (hey, some of us love it and want in-game) while most others are not.

Some people have tossed around the idea that you could adjust a setting to make sure it was there, and some people have said that the people who are seeing it are "lucky", and seeing the "base" of what was programmed into the non-censored version.

Some have simply surmised that it's a "glitch", as perhaps there are two different versions of the game. One for the US/UK, and one for everyone else, so it's, again, a programming issue.

I'm shocked to see those images, as most people are not seeing any dismemberment at all, even with explosive weapons. Upon seeing that, I'm even more irritated.

All I ever see is a splash of blood, even with a direct, point-blank crit to the head or a limb, but when the body falls, they're in one piece.

If anyone runs across anyone other updates/info on this, please drop the rest of us a line.

Maybe some downloads from Steam are the wrong versions for people in the US?

Could be another guess, I suppose.

Those might be the only two that I've witnessed. I'm not sure as I haven't been paying too much attention to it and the pictures are a few days old.

I explode people into chunks fairly regularly with my shotgun. Literally pop them, there's a huge splurt of blood and bits go flying off.

edit:
Video. I dunno why it decided not to stain the ground this time but there it is. The dead guy right at the start decided not to burst but the next two did.

The streaming textures are driving me insane. I edited the ini file to stop the streaming, and it did indeed stop it--and replaced it with 3-5 second freezes at seemingly random times. VRAM issue since I only have a gig? I'm running the game off my SSD,so that shouldn't be an issue.

I just need to figure out which line is the loot texture streaming, as that is the most annoying one. The I need to pull the trigger on a 670.

Well, I'm sure if you're playing regularly that you'll probably notice, but apparently you have the "full gore version" working correctly.

My game looks nothing like that in terms of gore.

Neither does mine, nor my wife's, so that makes two of us even in the same house. It's not just me/my game, and many others are having the same issue.

Wow, alright, wtf... there's obviously a huge difference, as all I ever see is a splash of blood (same thing with my wife), and sometimes not even, and that's it.

It might not seem like a "big deal" to some, and the game is phenomenal either way, but it does detract from the game a bit for me, as I'm missing something that adds to the visceral enjoyment of the game.

If others have it, why does so many others not? How could this even be possible?

Just some serious "bug"? Anyone seeing any complaints and/or comments or answers about this anywhere else?

Edit:
Woah, ok.... it's got to be QC or a bug.

My wife joined my game (we've been playing together for the last 40 hours), and I just tore people into bits with a shotty, just now. First time I've seen it happen.

It's sad really. All the dudes you murder in borderlands seem like they would be kickass to hangout with.

Here: http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=142491

Supposedly, the game was going to be uncut:

Some fans will remember that the first Borderlands game was a bit toned down in certain territories compared to the rest of the world. No longer! Do you live in Germany? Australia? Bandits will be just as likely to explode into bloody chunks of awesomeness as they will be in Canada or England (which is to say: very likely.)

Or, maybe you’re the type who abhors violence. You’re in luck – we’ve implemented a Gore Toggle option. With a single button press, you can turn Borderlands a less violent experience!

So... is it just a bug, then?

Of course, the rest of the thread extends until this very day, and people are complaining that there is no gore, but two people in this thread have proven the opposite, while the rest of us are missing out on a part of the game that adds to the enjoyment.

It's also the principal of the matter... quality control all around. Everyone should be having the same experience.

Are you just not hitting people hard enough? Here's another (with Afterburner fucking obliterating my framerate, making it hard to aim):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWWsx9QX0K8

Point blank shotgun hits seem to gib people fairly often, smacking someone in the head with a rifle from a distance, less so, through it does happen.

Nope, both my wife and I have been slamming people with shotties point-blank and still nothing. Trying it now.

Hell, in the first game, it didn't even take doing that, as even just normal guns were blowing people apart.

In your vid, you are blowing people apart with a rifle, that's not even a shotty, so there's definitely some quality control issue here, some bug.

Alright, wait... it's got to be a bug. My wife just checked and she's using an explosive pistol to blow enemies apart now, but not consistently, and the gore and bits are disappearing very quickly. Not happening often, and not at all for me, and I'm railing people with a shotty right now, a strong one.

Again, a QC issue or weird bug?

Must be some way to fix it, maybe they'll patch it if enough people complain they're not having the same experience.

Edit:

Woah, that's weird. Wife just jumped in my game, and for the first time in 40 hours of gameplay, ironically, it just happened for the first time right now... blew a guy apart with an explosive shotty. Gotta be bad QC or a weird bug. First time I've seen it happen. It's being extremely inconsistent, however.

It doesn't happen every single time, and you won't gib the Goliaths or the bigger enemies. Random psychos and bandits will burst though.

Does the Gunzerker get any better later on? I'm playing with two others, a commando and assassin, and I've tried all the classes to get a good feel for them all. It seems like Zero is pretty much devastation mode, with siren and commando being useful and having some good stuff in their trees, coming in second place. And then my gunzerker I couldn't help but feel was more of a novelty than anything else - played him the most up to 10, then made the switch to Siren and enjoyed it a lot more. The special skill just seems to be a bit of hooray silliness rather than something that really benefits the team or yourself.

Maybe, but I only have a 1Gb 6950 and I didn't notice a single streaming texture thingy, excepting when you travel to a new area where you get a millisecond of blurriness. You have much RAM? I found going form 4 to 8GB did me a lot of good, it used to be a piece of shit before.

well the game is fun however i hate the fact that you cant just do the normal missions or it will get super hard like i am level 15 while the units are level 19 and 20.

the guns are too weak to damage them well and when you kill them you dont get that much xp.

so you got to do the sub missions to level up more.
