The New EVE: Apocrypha

It's been my guess that most people that play EVE and never get it or hate it, had the wrong expectations. They expected a flying with a joystick space FPS type game and just can't change their thinking and give up. Imagine sitting down to play a FPS and you find out its an RTS. :p

It's like that for a reason.
EVE won't hold your hand.
It's a sandbox MMO, with long skill traning time in a brutal universe...easy was never part of the equation.
But the HUD/UI makes sense...once you understand it.

Doesn't make sense. You would think there would be some sort of tutorial for newcomers. But that's just me.

What changes?

POSes will no longer have any effect on sov, hence there will be no more POS warfare (save for the few important moons), and hence no more need for Dreads. I by now sold mine before everyone else in the universe catches on to that and the prices drop. However, I am also not part of an expansionist alliance, so those who warmonger may still need their Dreads for something, if only to remove old POSes.

Doesn't make sense. You would think there would be some sort of tutorial for newcomers. But that's just me.

Im sorry Bro....It is not my intent to be rude here, esp in my own thread...But your statement here clearly shows you have not given the game a chance. As Kencheeto has said,
There is actually a comprehensive tutorial that teaches you much of the core basics of gameplay..
Its VERY comprehensive. For that matter, when you first start out and click on things, such as the Market, Agents, just about everything has a popup menu which clearly points out directions on what to do and how to use said feature of the game. In fact, you cant miss it cause it overlaps the intended viewing of that feature your wanting to look at. You would actually have to click on a button to dismiss the tutorial.

As well, there are tutorial Agents all over the place in newbie space and they walk you thru each and every step.....As well, it even has a Womans computer voice that speaks to you and TALKS you thru the tutorials, word for word of exactly what is written in the directions.

You can also ask ANYONE who has played and they will tell you.....DO THE TUTORIALS!!!!! Plus, its rewarding to do them too, cause they give you FREE ships for you to use to start you out.

You can also go to the beginning of THIS thread and you will learn ALOT.....I started this thread when I began the game back 6mths ago, never played it before at all till then. So, in a way, this thread itself can be a helpful guide for you to use. There are links to MANY MANY other helpful sites within these pages too.

If you really REALLY want to play this game....Start with reading the first few pages of this thread and then DO THE TUTORIALS in the game.

Sorry if I came across as being rude or anything....hope you didnt take it that way, just trying to help you out :)

That is indeed a good lesson Thuleman. Kinda like measure twice, cut once. Words to live by Id say.

As for the Fonts.....

I was looking around the settings and there is options to change the font size. While in game, click esc and go to the General Settings tab. There on the first column on the left, about a 1/3 of the way down, you can set Font sizes.

:)

From 10 to 12. or something like that. It isn't really changing it all. It helped mind you, but still after an hour or two doing quests it really starts to strain my eyeballs. Lucky for me I'm just training skills atm since my friends corp that I joined got war dec'ed and everytime I log in they freakout and have me log off since they don't want me doing anything solo.

Got to admit, makes the game kinda boring and not fun. All that the enemy corp does is log and log out if we have more numbers then them on. Really kinda stupid. I envisioned PvP to be this you bring your fleet we'll bring ours and everyone get down (kinda like return of the jedi), but so far it is just them hitting solo miners then rushing back and docking. Its sorta like gate camping back in DAoC. BORING.

Tbh, no one outside CCP know exactly how the new sov will work, it's just a pile of speculation at this point. We should know after Fanfest though so another 23 days to go.

True, there's some amount of speculation, although there are a good number of indicators that POS towers will no longer be required for sov. Dread pilots can wait till the actual sov mechanics are announced, and then try to sell their Dreads at reprocessing value, or they can act, selling their Dreads now, still get market value for it, and if it turns out that Dreads will still be useful then they can buy them all over again.

The Titans will get nerfed from Doomsday AOE to single target, that much is clear.
Since CCP didn't have any issues with removing most all useful functionality from the Titans (and imho rightfully so, it was a bad design to begin with), it's not outlandish to think that they will not hesitate to delegate Dreads into obscurity since the skill and material cost of a Dread is a couple orders of magnitude lower than the cost of a Titan.

I created wealth in EVE solely based on knowledge paired with intuition, some may call it speculation, and I intend to continue doing just that. From where I am looking selling off Dreads is the prudent action to take, which is why I did it. It will be interesting to see whether I will still come out ahead, even though I had the 1.7bil blunder, once the changes are officially announced and the Dread price changes accordingly.

because joining a corp means someone in the corp could be a ship builder and can give you great discounts on any ships you need. especially if this said corp owns space and needs help defending it.

The prices were higher than local. People were more concerned about profiting than actually building the corp, save the corp leaders (built an Orca and Fenris, had maxxed out gang leading & mining bonuses etc.) Not my bag but I got in with the intent of finding a small gang for some good pew pew. Maybe I'll get into faction warfare once I head into Caldari or Gallente space.

Anyone new to EVE that needs help, ask here, ask in-game (and always double-check the answers you get.) EVE is extremely player friendly while at the same time being one of the most dangerous games to play. The variance helps to make it awesome.

My big thing is training and what to do. My friends corp is all tied up into their war atm so no one seems to have any time to answer questions or what not. They normally run "classes" for pretty much everything...fleet maneuvers, PvP, mining, science, navigation, etc....but they haven't done any of these since I started. Asking in vent is generally a bad idea since everyone is doing PvP, and questions on the forums get answered pretty slow or incomplete.

I'm picking things I know I need (right now I'm working on learning , engineering, electronics, and small projectile lvl 5) plus I just found out about certificates so I've been working on building a couple of those up. I guess my thing is what boosk to buy. I'm saving up for the advanced learning books, but ISK has been very very slow coming. After my destroyer debacle I was left with under 1mil isk and just now got back up to 5mil and am debating on which book to buy or should I wait until I get more of a cushion.

I also don't know which books to be on the lookout for. Do I just buy as many as I can or should I focus on a specific build? I've been using battle clinic and finding loadouts I like and have saved those in EvEMon so I can train for them, but there are so many its like which route to choose. Do I stay with my frigate and try and build that up to Tier 2 or do I shoot for Cruisers first, etc...etc...

My corp was the one that told me to rush to destroyers and outfit them with 280mm howitzers as that would be alvl 1 and 2 mission killer, but that didn't work out so well because they forgot to tell me that I didn't have all the support skills to make that build work. It seems like they assume I already know and have everything, I'm surprised they haven't recommended me getting a titan to do lvl 1's :(

I jumped straight from frigates to cruisers... makes going from L1 to L2 missions a breeze ;)

I jumped straight from frigates to cruisers... makes going from L1 to L2 missions a breeze ;)

Ya...found that out after I lost my destroyer. Been running the epic arc missions with my frigate and things are much smoother. My rifter is flying at about 850 now so I just get up close and plink away with the 200mm auto cannons.

While outfitting it out I finally learned about cpu and powergrid usage and how to tell what will and won't work, how engineering and electronics helps out in those areas, and how other skill synergies work. Makes planning out how to fit my rifter kinda fun to be honest.

Just worried about when it comes time for a cruiser. Don't want to keep using BC to tell me how to outfit my rigs, seems kinda dirty or like cheating haha.

My big thing is training and what to do.

Check back a few pages on this thread, there's some good info and probably much better stuff online. The most efficient course is to train your learning skills up as soon as possible. Get these up to V as soon as you can while still training enough to fly around and do the tutorials:

Analytical Mind
Empathy
Instant Recall
Iron Will
Learning (train this to V first)
Spatial Awareness

Next, work on the rank 3 skills and get them up to IV

Clarity
Eidetic Memory
Focus
Logic
Presence

As far as the other fitting skills go, it depends on what you want to do. Missioning/PvP is different than trading or mining. Assuming you want to pew pew (blow shit up with your ship), it depends on what you want to fly:

Amarr: Lasers for damage and Armor tanking for defense
Caldari: Not great for PvP, ranged hybrid weapons/missiles and shield tanking
Gallente: hybrid weapons & drones, generally armor tanking
Minmatar: projectile weapons, some drones, speed and mixed (shield/armor) tanking - considered 'hard mode' due to the training requirements

The skills are grouped into these categories - I'm leaving out the things not related to pew pew

Drones - Anything to do with drones (remote ships you control)
Electronics - Targeting and Electronic Warfare (and countering EW)
Engineering - Energy related things, power, CPU and shields
Gunnery - Self descriptive, there are subcategories for each weapon type (except missiles)
Learning - Vastly speeds up learning the other skills
Mechanic - Mechanical stuff, repair, rigging and damage reduction
Missile Launcher Operation - Self descriptive
Navigation - Allows you to fit things to make you go much faster and conserve fuel while doing so
Spaceship Command - Allows you to fly various ships

A full description of what to do and when to do it is well beyond the scope of this post. The tutorials help some with that and I *highly* recommend that you get EVEMon and EFT, which will help you plan your skills and fit your ships, respectively.

For now, focus on the tutorials and learn the interface. Ask questions in the newbie channel and here if you need specifics.

My second L4 mission nearly ended in disaster. Guessed wrong on resist type because the mission parameters are identical between two different faction types.

I got impatient--and worse, no insurance on that BS--until now.

I forgot all about insurance, never bothered before.

...(lots of stuff Egg typed)
For now, focus on the tutorials and learn the interface. Ask questions in the newbie channel and here if you need specifics.

Thanks, Egg for the info, but that was the stuff I already knew hehe. Sorry guess you missed it in my post where I talked about leveling my learning skills to 5 currently and working on making the isk to purchase my advanced learning skills.

Its the stuff inbetween I guess that really I need to focus on. I'm minmatar and love my little rifter so I've looked at some loadouts on BC for doing level 1 and 2 missions. But my question lies, should I focus on training those skills I see on BC or should I focus on getting cruisers and then go back to the "other" skills, or do I focus on just getting enough frigate support skills up like surgical strike or what not....

Yep, missed it, sorry. :)

Use battleclinic as a general reference for ships and fittings, find a ship you like and try to fit it in EFT. It will show you what skills you are missing to fit the ship the way you want--there's a little red box at the top, hover over it and it will show you what you are missing. You'll have to import your character's attributes first using the API key from EVE online.

The Battleclinic fits are probably mostly Tech II fittings and it's worth focusing on skilling up to be able to fit those. For that, EVEMon is useful (sorry if you know this already.)

But yes, pick a cruiser for the level 2 missions. And like the earlier posts say, a side trip into Destroyers can be useful too (but mainly for salvage IMO, although they make L1 missions simple.)

Learning skills on a new player is a tough thing to focus on. On the one hand they are VERY important, on the other hand your sitting around skilling learning and not advancing your ship/gun skills. You have to fin a happy balance. I would say run learning skills to 4 for low and 3 for high. Then get to the point you can SAFELY fly lvl 3's (great isk!) and then go back and finish learning skills. Once you start your second account, lol, you will find it easier to park one character while they do their learning and play your other account.

Yikes.

Thats why I keep hulll repairers and armor repairers around: Too cheap to pay the repair costs :)

if your ship is to damaged i dont think you can undock it. i would of warped to a station and see if someone would remote armor rep me. still got structural damage though. there are structure repair modules to but that does take longer. still free though.

first skills i learned were

all learning skills.

then what i call the basics

electronics 5

engineering 5

depending on what race you are and ships you fly

dam forgot some of the skill names.

shield skills for caldari and minmatar depending on ship for minmatar they can do both

armor skills for gallente and amarr.

Agreed, using logging as part of 'tactics' is really trash. Part of finding a good fight is doing research (using alts or watching killboards) to see what corps are actively fighting. My corp has much respect for those that show up to fights and understand that losses will happen, and a smaller force can certainly crush a larger one given the right circumstances. Provoking a fight using a decoy fleet, etc.. its all part of the game.

Do you max all the learning skill to 5 first?

Get evemon (honestly you cannot really play/understand the game without this).. there is an optimal way to do the learning skills. create a plan called learning , Find the advanced SOCT skills - plan those to level 4 and then optimise from there (it will populate the pre-req's and make suggestions).

iirc... Lvl1 learning skill, memory skill, intelligence skill. Then level's 2-4 in the same order => unlocks the advance memory/intelligence SOCT skills. and then work from there with the perc/willpower skills.

The 1st tier learning skills are probably worth skilling to 5 (analytical mind, instant recall, spatial awareness, iron will) - but not especially so in the first instance for the new player.

Learning to level 5 is generally not worth it, few years for it to payoff apparently. and the SOCT skills to level 5 can wait until you are really playing the game (it becomes more imporant to have better attributes skilled in when you start getting podded :) ) .

For a brand new player.. i would skill the basics to 4, advanced to 3 in Int/Perc/Willpower/Memory. and then skill for something to have fun in / get to know the game you want to play.

With the 2x starting multiplier, the above can be done pretty quickly.

/edit, lol at cross-posting with mashie again !! what he said^^

*** Core Skills for all Pilots ***
Engineering 5: to maximize the power core.
Electronics 5: to maximize the CPU.
Energy Management 5: to maximize the capacitor
capacity.
Energy Systems Operation 5: to maximize the rate
at which the capacitor recharges.
Energy Grid Upgrades 5: to reduce the CPU requirements
of installing power modules.
Mechanic 5: To maximize hull strength.
Shield Management 5: to maximize shield capacity. (If shield tanked)
Shield Operation 5: to maximize the rate at which (if shield tanked)
the shield recharges. (if shield tanked)
Hull Upgrade 5: To maximize armor strength.
Repair Systems 4: To be able to operate the best (if armor tanked)
armor and hull repair modules (if armor tanked)

Well, repair systems 5 as you'll need T2 reppers eventually.

Shield management and Energy management 5 (both rank 3) come a bit later, there are more important rank 1 skills to train 1st. You can get by just fine w/ 4 on both.

Also, Energy grid upgrades @ 4 is fine, as that unlocks PDU2's for shield tankers. The other modules it unlocks help if you have problems fitting certain setups, though generally speaking using fitting mods = bad fit.

It's been awhile since I played. Now that you mention it I do remember the lady talking in the tutorial, etc. I'll have to download this again and give it a second go. Anyone recommend a server?

Yeah, not saying to train them to 5 asap, but they are key skills that SHOULD be trained to 5 pretty quickly. t2 reps being the most important, or t2 shields if you float that way. But there is nothing worse than trying to fit out your ship and not having enough cpu/pg or capping out in a mission. And t2 gear is cheaper than buying faction or meta 4 to help with tight fittings.

t2 armour reppers only need lvl 4.

agree Energy grid upgrades to 5 is very rarely needed/helpful (rcu II maybe - other than that...), especially for the newer player. Likewise new armour tankers can almost entirely ignore the shield skills for quite some time & both types of tank will need some compensation skills (possibly get away with this more as shield tank, not so with armor tank).

The other energy skills are nice (amarr essential) and unlock thermodynamics (overheating) which is awesome PVP skill.

t2 armour reppers only need lvl 4.

Indeed, that's correct, just looked again. It's been so long since I trained them :p

And confirming Thermodynamics is one of the better skills, have it trained to 5 on both my chars. 4 is probably enough, but I overheat constantly.

Overheating is very overlooked for PVE, sure its awesome for pvp, but it does amazing things while mission running too. Don't think just because you don't pvp you shouldn't train for it!

If you need to overheat in a mission you are doing something seriously wrong.

Can't really fault you there, but I find it fun to overheat guns and kill faster and everyonce in a while, hitting the repper when you popped the wrong ship and advanced the wave. I haven't "had" to use it in years, but it's still fun to mess with.

I had another Level II mission the other day. Thought I was up for the challenge, so I took it. But when I got there, there were no rats.......untill I got within a certain range and then....RATS ALL OVER THE PLACE. I was overwhelmed and ended up loosing my Vexor.

I "thought" it was going to be a simple pick up and drop off mission so I didnt bother looking it up. Oppps!!! They spawned right on top of me. I tried to take them out, but when I saw I wasnt going to make it, I "tried" to warp out, but they got me.

Later, I looked it up and sure enough....once you get within 16km, the first wave of 10 ships spawns and as soon as you kill just ONE ship, another 10 spawn. I had 19 rats all firing at me at once.

What would be the best way to handle this type of situation?

My thoughts are:

1.) Turn and Burn and kite them all the while letting my drones attack them
2.) Bookmark the pickup location, then warp out, then turn around and be able to warp within 20km of that location, send in the drones and try to pick them off one by one with my ship from a distance.

Any other ideas?

This is the mission Im talkin about http://eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=CargoDelivery2br

If you need to overheat in a mission you are doing something seriously wrong.

Yeah, like me using a Rokh in a L4 against 7 BS and full room aggro if I start firing before I move ~30km, plus rails that take a lot of time to kill the BS--and no missile/blaster skills to speak of.

I'll be lucky to complete this mission by the deadline six days hence. Dumb is me.

You are supposed to just make a mad run for the cargo, get it and leave without killing anything. If you already fucked up the mission you either have to kill everything, or do your best to just make it to the cargo.

If you have to kill it all, warp in, align to your station immediatly and shoot as much as you can, when you get low you are already aligned so just warp. Take a few ships every time and soon enough youll be able to tank whats left.

You cant really bookmark something inside a deadspace while the mission is still on, it will just warp you to the default point, or to the first deadspace with the accel gate.

After I lost my ship and built a new one....thats exactly what I did.....warped in real quick, took some hits, grabbed the loot and warped out.....But it was a shame I couldnt kill those rats and then come back and salvage them.

Mission got completed though, so I didnt loose any standings.

Well guys and gals...Its been a good run, but after 6mths of EVE....I have to say goodbye......GOODBYE TO THE EVE MUSIC.....(haha, had ya'll goin for a sec, ehh, hehehe).

Seriously though...the EVE music, as cool as it was earlier, I have gotten tired of listening to it. I know I can add in MP3 files to the game, but im clueless as to how to do it. I also do not own a MP3 player or know anything about them.

I would like to add my own music to the game. Id like to add some Slayer: Seasons of the Abyss and some South of Heaven. Add in some Testament: Souls of Black and Practice what You Preach as well as throw in some Pantera and some old school Judist Priest and a few KISS songs.

Can someone in the know, explain to me how this is done, or better yet, link me to a directional page which tells me how to do it.

First things first though, I need to get this music in MP3 format somehow, someway which I have no clue.

Any ideas guys????

^^I'd like to see that as well. There's some people who create music that is inspired by Eve that I'd like to add in (Like stuff from Roc Wieler).

Never looked at adding my own music, used to listen to eve-radio and a couple of other sites. Not sure if they are still around or not.
