The Elder Scrolls Online

It seems to me the whole MMO thing has sort of run its course. Why is everyone trying to get in on this. Nobody can do it as well as Blizzard and it seems like all the other ones fail.

Because it's an enormous cash cow...

Except when most of them inevitably fail, then it's just a waste of everyone's time and money.

You shouldn't have to be a "pro" to enjoy a game, though.

My comment was specifically about PvP. The thing is though, that all games are being made so that anyone can win them. Games used to be hard. They were enjoyable while being hard... those two things don't have to be mutually exclusive. You play a game a bit and you get better. When it comes to PvP, the person who is better at the game should win the fight.

True. Though I would be fairly pissed if I paid a monthly fee (in regards to MMOs) to continuously get my ass kicked. In an SP or MP game where you only pay for the game itself, it wouldn't bother me as much.

Too many kids would qq over a mechanic like this. It simply woudln't be popular for today's average gamer that likes to win without ever having learned to be pro.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with the "pro" PvPer hanging out in starter zones killing newbs that can't even damage him. The "casuals" didn't kill open-world PvP, the PvPers did.

Ahhh ganking. One of the reasons I hate PVP realms.

Make it so that you can only attack people that are 5 levels higher or 5 levels lower, problem solved.

Yea i'm not sure why WoW didn't implement this, or kill ganking with Dishonorable kills like they originally intended. PvP realms are the best, but yes--ganking is retarded and it's a shame that's what ends up happening 9 times out of 10.

I played WOW in a PVP server that seemed to have a 2:1 or 3:1 Horde:Alliance ratio. Trying to level up was a bitch...particularly Stranglethorn Vale, I can't even describe the rage that ensued constantly being ganked trying to clear that zone...

In Vanilla, STV was by far my favorite zone. That was when aimed shot didn't break shadowmeld..

Yes and no. While it was fun and I liked the dwarves, it was the biggest epitome of grind quests ever. Kill 20 tigers, raptors, etc. Ok, now kill 20 bigger tigers. BC was even worse when they brought it back...kill 30 each of these goddamn eagles when there is only about 30 in the zone to begin with, (@*(@

The departure from the WoW quest system is what i'm most stoked about GW2. However, it will lack world PVP which imo really brings a world to life, when you have to watch your back.

WHAT! Ganking was a right of passage in UO. Everyone got ganked, multiple times withink a 2 minute timeframe...

hmmm... getting ganked did kind of suck, but it was always a rush escaping from a horde of Reds. 100% Hiding FTW!

The joy of pvp (and ganking) is the rush/suspense that comes from it. Knowing that while you are out exploring and adventuring, at any moment some pker can come along and kill you added a lot to the game and atmosphere.

Now I am talking about reds that would actually kill players, loot, move on. Not those assholes that'd kill someone, sit at their body and camp kill. Those people were usually dealt with a simple call for help.

In UO I remember so many times reds liked to kill at the crossroads that lead out of Britiana to the west, where new players would venture. ANYTIME this happened all it took was for one single player who died to come to town (where you had to come to get a res anywas) and tell everyone at the bank that reds were camping the crossroads, everyone know what this meant and you generally would get a HUGE amount of anti-pkers/guilds to come out and clear them away.

Part of the joy of open world pvp is just how open it makes the world.

So many people who never experienced it first-hand, in old UO or others just don't get it or understnad what all it brings.

If you have open pvp it allows players to actually !gasp! Roleplay. You have bad people, you have good people, you have thoes that don't care and go about adventuring/crafting/taming animals, everything.

So many mmo's, even those that have "EVIL!!!1" factions make you into a hero/good guy and never offer you the ability to actually be a "bad" guy, UO allowed this. It let you kill people, steal from other real players, however all of this came at a cost.

You were Kill on sight in towns if you were red, if you were caught stealing it just took a simple "guards!" for them to instantly kill you.

Then you had the fact that almost anyone who wasn't red would kill you. There were specific guilds that focused on killing reds (anit-pkers as they were usually known). They would just run around common red hunting grounds taking them out.

Nothing was more exciting in UO then having a huge group of Reds in a guild come running near you, you see their red names and go "oh shit" and then pop stealth, sitting there hoping they didn't see you in time as they get closer and closer.

The open pvp of UO before the whole "split" of Trammal/Felicua killed it was easily the most social game I have ever played. In every mmo since then it's not been anywhere near as social. In UO you had plyer run events all over the place, from player run tournaments (with prizes) to weddings, to parties, even events that GM's sponsered and did things with. Then you even had the actual developers get involved and have game events (Undead invading cities) and things.

The open pvp nature made the world feel alive, dynamic, active. It promoted you FINDING people, getting to know people who were truly nice people and would help you or vice versa if you were playing a bad character. Friends in UO to this day are still my friends online, I've played with them in other games.

One of them even posts on here as well, remember the first time I came across him in UO. He was just walking along the road and me and a guild mate came up to him and he was scared we were about to gank him lol, but we didn't and he ended up joining us and became a good online friend that I still keep in touch with.

Zenimax Online Studios is reluctant to announce, "Game Bugs: The MMO Experience."

Have you ever wanted to experience the sheer magnitude of bugs in our games with a friend? Have you ever wanted to have quest ending errors and glitches destroy your online experience?

If so, you are in luck. World Renown as the leader in game breaking bug technology, Bethesda Softworks and Zenimax Online Studios bring you the most bug filled and unfixable (we won't let the modders at this one) online gaming experience of all time.

FUS-RO-BSOD!

Care to elaborate? I haven't heard of Zenimax till now but apparently the head of Zenimax was previously associated with Mythic Entertainment which is DAOC. So what game did Zenimax fuck up that draws you to this conclusion? their wiki is pretty much blank

hero engine? no thanks
third person? no thanks
doesn't even look like an ES game? no thanks

Zenimax is the parent company of Bethesda, and Bethesda is widely known for their games having all sorts of crazy bugs.

I think his point is (as someone else pointed out earlier) that Zenimax Online Studios and Bethesda Game Studios are supposedly two different entities. How different? Not really sure.

I'm probably extremely biased because one of my best friends is an employee at zenimax working on this game, but I'm really excited for it and actually expect it to be a solid release. I was very doubtful at first, but over time - seeing videos, etc, I've come to think that this actually seems good.

Don't worry, he doesn't break NDA. But I'm a programmer in a different industry and we talk about our workdays, our processes, etc. It seems like Zenimax is a great place to work and has good management and good stuff is happening there.

Bethesda softworks is in rockville and zenimax is in hunt valley. Completely different qa teams, different managers, different developers, different artists, different buildings, different towns, and different company cultures and philosophies to an extent as well.

signed up for the beta thing said my chances are "excellent" so will see if i get in

Signed up, as did my friends and family :D. Here's hoping for a DAOC 2.0 experience!

While I wholeheartedly agree with this, I will settle for a good crafting system; one where you can do nothing but craft and have an impact/importance in the world.

It will never cease to amaze me how much hype cinematic trailers gain. Since when is giving a damn about gameplay outdated?

Never said anything about gameplay. Just seen that no one had posted anything about the beta signup yet so I figured I would roll everything into one post.

I wasn't trying to comment on your post exactly, but rather the silly marketing plans that seem to work these days.

Looks like I have an 'excellent' chance to get into the beta. Here's hoping the game is fun, and will be enjoyable for more than a month or two like Old Republic was.

Just signed up myself, had trouble with IE so used Firefox, good to go. Cheers to a good BETA!

WAIT! you mean to tell me that nub alliance characters didn't like getting beat to death by naked horde players with fishing poles!!!

That was me being the ganker. I corpse camped some kid for 8 hours once. Never heard someone rage so bad from his buddies horde account :).

Ill see how tes handles the game engine itself. If its anywhere as shitty as swtors engine... fuck Bethesda. Being a die hard daoc player, three way pvp could get me to play

Looks like Vanilla MMO with the list above. Sure they are using some corperate buzz words to sound unique, but it isin't.

A bit off topic, name me a massively success MMO that allows 100% open ended PvPfest on NPCs and players that successful? Not being a troll, but I don't know of any, and UO is like 100 years old and dead. I doubt I'll play a open PvP MMO for $15 a month to get spawn ganked... maybe just me.

I wished they didn't shutdown Fallout MMO, tired of 23476786576 fantasy MMOs... ah well...

Who here actually played Dark Age of Camelot?

Me. I played it for nearly seven years cumulatively. :D I am hoping against hope this game ends up with great RVR and nice PVE content to boot. Not having pvp-specific gear stats is a good thing, just how DAOC did it, having three realms/factions is a good thing, having a positively gigantic RVR area with in-depth mechanics is a good thing, having crafting be important and high-end items be tradeable is a good thing, having dungeons in the RVR area and not having it be JUST a place to pvp is a good thing (hi New Frontiers and Labyrinth of the Minotaur, I missed you!), etc. I can't wait to find out more... hopefully they'll put in great housing like DAOC did as well sometime... it added a great sense of community and permanence to the game.

What list? And it doesn't sound like a generic modern MMO at all, if anything it sounds like a great throwback to games like Dark Age of Camelot :D.

UO IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STOP REMINDING ME! :(

Now... I love fantasy, so more fantasy, is awesome, even if we're alreayd full of them. What I don't need is more crappy gameplay. I don't want more lets do this quest, then that quest..... ugh.
