I know this is rather offtopic but could some1 help me (a noob in watercooling) give me some advice as with which set to go for my E6600 CPU, as heat is going to be my limiting factor, it runnings hot damn hot! It wiill be the first time ill be using watercooling. Thanks in advanced, no need to spam this thread..please PM me.

You can buy a very good air cooler, like the thermalright ultra 120, tuniq tower 120, scythe infinity or noctua nh-u12. It's cheaper, safer and less noisy than a watercooling system! ;)

I max the Zalman 9500 when testing OC, but keep it down to 1900RPM for day to day. With default vcore I'm usually around 50C Max load. How much better would any of those really be than a Zalman 9500? Anyone have a Z95 + big fat tower guy?

@ aoki thing is im already using the zalman 9500AT. And have probe readings of 55 @ load. I just think thats way 2 hot for only 1.4vcore. And bios reads 38 idle @ 1.4v .
So thats why im looking into watercooling, want to take this chip to higher grounds and i need water.

I also have the Zalman 9500 which works great. Also, I configured Speedfan to auto adjust to my CPU temp:

32 C and less : 40 % (of max speed) = Silence
33 to 44 : 75 % = Quiet
45 and more 100 % = Slightly noisy

I never reach over 50 C on Orthos dual prime even though i OC'ed to 3.2 GHz. Awesome combo!

/ soapbox bit, skilp down for the meat.
Watercooling might get you 10 to 15 extra MHZ of FSB but is not going to make a huge difference in the overclock and you do not want to (not if you are smart or unless have big steaming piles of money) run the cpu maxed out for normal use, normally you back off the max overclock.

For Conroe - watercooling is mainly for quiet. Or like I did this weekend push the hell out of it and see what she will do (484 x7 ) and then back off before you break something (450x7) and I can hear the clock ticking on the other wall with the computer sitting next to me.

/end soapbox

I been watercooling for 10 years, at the present moment, for a new guy wanting to get into it. The best bang for the buck IMO is the Thermatake Bigwater 745 which can be found for about $145. Works great, all the cooling in the world. everything you need in one box, easy to install. I added a gpu block for an additional $40 .+ $7 for ramsinks for video card + $10 for PCI slot fan card to get some air on the video card.

You can spend more and perhaps get a deg C or two cooler but it wont make any difference you can feel.

Normally I would have shot myself before recommending a kit or using one myself, and I dont even like Thermaltake as I am old school "where is that old heatercore ? 1/2 hose or nothin !" kind of person. But this thing rocks for the money!!

Only downside is the instructions dont warn to to check ALL connections before starting her up and that you should fill and check for leaks with no power to the motherboard before starting normal operation. I found the fitting on the 2x120 rad and the 1x 120 rad a little loose for my taste and 30 sec with a cresent wrench to make them smartly snug did the trick.

pump has rmp lead you can plug into mother board fan connector so that in the bios of most boards you can monitor that fan for failure. That means you will have an alarm if the pump ever fails !!!

UV coolant and hose are glowy green, wish they had been blue, I like blue.

@Billparish..

Thanks for the articulate reply :)Ill look into it. Its just that the temps worry me. @ 3.6ghz i can reach upto 70 degrees in core temp..now that doesnt make me very happy :S

Less Noisy Yes!
Can you tell me a watercooling more silent than an thermalright ultra 120 with a 120 fan @ 1000 rpm. The radiator will have at least 2 fans, add to this the noise from pump and possible vibrations to the box from the pump.

Cost 95€? Please let me calculate. 50 € for thewaterblock, another 40€ for the pump, at least 50€ for radiator, another 10€ for basic tubing etc. So its around ~150€ for a good watercooling setup. You also add the risk of leak. If you want to go with a ready low cost watrercooling kit probably it will perform worst than top air cooling.

3200 mhz with a E6400 is not big deal(the cpu-z shows 1.2Vcore, so no stock also), you can do that with stock intel cooling also. Iam prime stable, without throttling, with my E6400 @ 3400+ mhz / 1.47 Vcore. The coretemp shows 77oC while dual priming, but its wrong because I can touch the heatsink and its nowhere close to that.

Core temp reads the internal temp diode and you are getting pretty damn hot, my run (posted above) only brought my core temp to 52C. Have you considered the possibiliy your heatsink is not hot might be because it is not conducting heat away from your processor effeciently ? These conroes are not prescott furnaces but even with a 120mm fan you are not moving a tremendous amount of air at 1000 rpm and that heatsink should be pretty warm. I would considere remounting it. Or perhaps that fan is turned up a bit ?

Woot  3.6ghz temps are high but getting watercooling today for bringing those down at least by 10C i hope.

Can you tell me the vcore for your overclocking? Mine is 1.47, so yes is hot but not dangerous hot. You see if it was dangerous hot the cpu starts throttling in order to cool down the processor, I dont have any throttling(0%). Conroe are very hot processors when voltage is increased. I have almost -15oC less in dual prime load with 1.37Vcore. The heatsink does a terrific job even @ 1000rpm, I used to have a vapochill micro with 2 fans and the cpu with the same voltage(1.47) was serious throttling(50%) as soon as 3360 mhz, and now with ultra 120 Iam prime stable in 3400 mhz with zero throttling. So Iam happy and I dont mind to put watercooling on, I have a self made very good perfomance kit but I know it will give me no more than 100 mhz in stable overclock so it doesnt worth the trouble.:)

sent you a pm but for any others interested vcore was set at 1.4 for my run. Earlier runs at 1.3825 did as well but gave it some extra when going for the "gold" cause I didnt want to wait another 4 hours in case it failed. All :throttle software disabled in bios, only use the max cpu temp alarm set to 70C. Apparently I got a pretty good chip, luck of the draw. I noticed my bios screen is jittery at high FSB think my power supply needs updating only rated 470W and thought with lower power dissapation of conroe I could get by, which I can for normal use, need more I think for another run, I want 500 FSB!!
(BTW my DQ6 has had extensive mods to the heatpipe assembly to correct mass production manuf "sloppyness" , replace all pushpins with hardware, AS5 and ceramic, removed top cover of NB and added 40 mm fan, 2 x 40mm fans on upper heatpipe rad. Stiffener under top edge of board to eliminate board flex from heatsink/waterblock mounting so that power Mosfets contact the heatpipe properly. custom waterblock holdown using spring clamping method using precision springs from Mcmaster to ensure uniform clamping )

I'm not proud of this OC, but it's useful info to add to your db

18 more days until I am living on my own in my first place. I am going to sleep for a very long time.

Looking good , but I dont think I am going to make it on the leaderboard with the board I am going to get.

Never mind , I was well looking forward to it but seen the 590sli and it doesnt look to gooduntil they change the northbridge.

I call it a CON from Nvidia side selling us a so called enthusiast chip which cant live up to whats expected of it , especially when they are sold as same as the 975x.

Got whooped by Nvidia without any lube

finally got some of that nice-ass patriot ddr2-667 in, replaced my 1mhz ocing 533 with it and jumped straight to 2.8 on my 6300.
i'll prime it overnight and get back with screens, then head on for 3+, maybe, im fucking impressed by the thing at a lowly 2.8.

I have tried a couple of week 27 E6600's and got in the range of 3400MHz + or - on air with a variety of motherboards. I assume from all threads that I have read here that this is close to the limits of the chip with reasonable voltages on air.

Is it likely that someone would find a week 27 or other week that would do much better or is this about it? (not that I am in any way disappointed.) In other words, if I had opportunity to try one or two more week 27's, would there likely be more high-end to it?

What I have found is one chip (week 27) that has a good bit more capability at lower voltage, rather than one that does more with higher voltage. I am assuming that this would be desirable.

My E6600, which I am still testing, hits 3.6ghz with 1.525 vcore, but it's not stable.. I think it might be the 1401 beta bios tho which is causing issues with the mobo at 400fsb.. anyways... when I get some 12+ hour stable prime data I will post pics and such.. for now:

seems my chip needs more volts than most. had to add a tenth of a volt from my last stable result to both NB and Vcore. bumping 59c under orthos. may not be worth it for 210 mhz more.

especially since at 3.01ghz, i could run all the speedstep throttling stuff, and it would go greater than 13 hours on orthos AND prime at the same time. and it still didnt fail, i just got bored and wanted to play some games. ran about 5-6c cooler too.

we'll see. still feel i can tighter the ram imings up. those were just initial guesses. i'd be ecstatic with 5-4-4-15. hell who knows, maybe it can run speedstep/eist/c1e whatever too!!

keep ya posted

damn if this chip isnt the best little deal since my old......... well you know :)

failed @2 hours 45 minutes

dont feel comfortable going any higher on any of the voltages without water cooling.

so back to 430x7 =3010mhz.

on the plus side, i got my ram timings down to 4-4-3-8-20 from 4-4-4-12-42

I wanted to keep my RAM high, so I did a 7x450 and know I can go higher (3.2 no problem) with the stock multiplier. I also tested to use the lowest possible voltage to achieve this stable overclock as opposed to just seeing how fast I can go. I'll use this o/c 24/7.
