The Civilization V Thread

You can actually sell your open borders to other friendly civs for 50g per 30 turns. Actually helps quite a bit in the early game.

LOL, reminds me of selling maps in Rome Total War. Easy income, and it did the AI no good, since they all have maphack anyways.

I was playing *a lot* since release... makes me wonder if 50 euros weren't just wasted.

That really diminishes your point.

Another guy was complaining about New Vegas being a mod, and said he would be waiting for a Steam sale before buying. He said he hated most of Fallout 3 and found it to be a pretty boring game - it transpired that he had a 100% achievement success (something that even I came nowhere close to getting), and that he had bought all the DLCs, which he also disliked, with the exception of Point Lookout, which he said was 'okay'.

LOL!

You know, if you admit to having spent 'a lot' of time playing a game... in particular, when you've spent way, way more time playing the game than those of us who find it to be enjoyable... then it really does make your point about not liking the game, and feeling ripped off for having spent the money on it, extremely weak.

So I think I'm about to abandon a game. I took 6 French cities in a blitzkrieg and all the unhappiness brought my Civilization to a stand still. Can't build anything, not enough money to buy happiness buildings. His single city was able to produce units that are killing me because my soldiers wont fight.

He then gave me a city in trade for peace that I made in to a puppet. (He had to make settlers and build a new town while I stood there and watched). But I cant end turn because the game wants me to choose production in a city I want to stay as a puppet. Stupid yellow button wont go away.

So now I wait 50 turns for courthouses while waiting for the Japs to stop circling like vultures and make their move. Good time to retire. Oh, wait that's gone now too

Can you raze them? That's always my favorite thing to do if I don't want to mess with managing puppets and happiness.

No allies. Been at war too long. Razing may be the answer. Burn Paris! But it's bad. 25 unhappy people. Might have to raze every one lol

I am in the same situation, took some french cities and annexed them thinking he would make peace after a few cities were taken, but no, ended up losing one and have these damn cities preventing me from re arming and I am sure napoleon is just biding his time.

You should always puppet a city for a few turns at least until they stop revolting. You can't do anything for that time period anyway.

I do think it's very stupid that a razed city still takes maintenance and prevents you from building wonders that require a certain building in all cities. I'm burning it to the ground, why on earth would I want to maintain it or feed the people?

sell the cities to anyone who has some money, ally or not just unload them. come and take it back when you have happiness to support it...

Finally played a game long enough to get some nukes.

I have to say, the animation when you nuke someone is extremely satisfying. A lot of the late-game units are too. Stealth bombers, battleships/destroyers, GDRs are all a ton of fun after slogging through the other ages of the game.

For the guy with too many cities, basically it seems like you should either puppet full-time or raze right away. If you puppet, surround it with trading posts to offset the cost of all the crap it will build. Giving them away to other nations is a good idea too, if it's a border city that can provide a buffer zone or even force two AI's to go to war.

You can't raze capitals :p
Instead raze some of the smaller cities (especially if they don't have interesting luxury/resources around).

Tell us how it went.

Razing all of the cities you can really does help a lot with the unhappiness and upkeep on courthouses. You do lose out on the benefit of gaining the cities territory instantly though, which can be nice depending on the resources. I never razed cities in previous games for the most part, but I will in this one if I don't need anything the city has immediately. Much easier just to settle a replacement city of my own.

You can puppet them and then annex them later especially if they start building random crap that just drain your economy. I don't like how I can't sell a building in a city.

I HATE holding on to the cities I've taken over. Always burn them to the ground. The added cost and unhappiness is just not worth it whatsoever. Starting from scratch is far easier, even if you have to work your way back up in that territory. Besides, and I'm not sure if this is still the case with Civ V, but in previous Civ's I've had cities that I took over suddenly claim they want to be a part of the previous owner again and completely change owners. For example (I think in Civ 3 or 4) I took over a Russian city that was no where near any other Russian city (remove the possibility of culture). It was happy and productive and stayed with me for at least 30 turns. Then one day I get a message out of the blue from the city basically saying "The people want to join with Russia again, sorry" and that was it. It became a Russian city. It was so strange to me, because I've had cities ask me before that they wanted to join another Civ, but the option to turn it down was always there. This particular time I wasn't even given the option.

the flipping of cities due to culture seem to have been completely removed altogether, at least from the few game I'm seen, even if you culture bomb (nerfed to hell btw). I guess if you culture bomb and then culture bomb next to a city 9 turns later? I don't know, they seem to have try to "fix" a lot of what wasn't broken in Civ 4.

If you upgrade Artillery to Rocket Artillery the Rocket Artillery will have to set up before firing when normally built ones don't.

it would nice if you could tell the puppets to have a focus, at least culture/gold/production/food high level options....it could be worse though, at least they dont just start pumping out archers and workers turn after turn (although I've never left them puppets that long).

It's in the manual, you can't flip cities. Culture bombing just flips tiles to you.

I don't typically have the problem you guys are discussing with the newly taken cities. I mean I get some unhappy people, and the courthouse starts at like 222 turns, but generally takes less than 25 turns to actually make it without a golden age. I just take them, because for some reason, I always have a ton of happiness anyways between those social policies and road construction, etc...

its typically when you take a lot of cities, aka going beast mode on the other civs and wiping them from the face of the earth. A few cities isn't that bad.

I had to start annexing all my puppets because they were all building nuclear power plants. I WANT GDRs!

The lack of ability to conquer a city and take it over, without some kind of random punishment to happiness was a bit jarring for me, no idea why they limited your choice in that way.

The world map is a definite downgrade. I like the CIV 4 one much better. I still want to be able to raze capitals.

ROM for Civ 4 is still a better game.

Just wait until the modders get moving on 5.

My biggest disappointment is the speed. I've got a couple huge worlds going and it crawls between turns.

I've got an i7 heavily overclocked/watercooled, 6 gigs of ram, 80gig intel SSD OS, raid 0 samsung 1tb's for game partition, 5870 overclocked, etc, etc and I'm one of those anal people that even turns off services I don't need.

It takes up to 30 seconds some times between turns getting close to the end which is beyond frustrating. Has absolutely nothing to do with the graphics. I've bumped up the overclock to uncomfortable levels on a cold day just to see what it did and it did indeed shave off some time. I'm curious if they even are using multiple cores on this.

I love the game but the performance is frustrating. Ironically it multitasks like a mofo which is why I'm wondering if they are only utilizing one core or something.

Out of curiosity I was able to open multiple games at the same time, I did aion, magic the gathering, plants and zombies, and minecraft - and was still able to run civ V in the same way - it still spent 30 seconds or so between turns and didn't seem to be impacted by all the other games.

I should also say that the game FLYS nearly to the end - once I get into Renaissance or so on the huge maps it starts to crawls between turns - about the start of that time it's 5~ seconds per turn ramping up to 30+ towards the end. In the turns I'm acting in it's instant.

This game is a piece of crap. It's like they sold me a $50 beta version. Crashes all the time at later stages, weird things happen like can't declare war, can't proceed to the next turn when the peace treaty involves cities, dx11/10 can't see oil renderings in water tiles, did I mention it crashes without mercy?!

There are few annoying things...
1) ESRB notice.. do I really need to click it a button to go past it every single time?
2) DX9 vs DX10/11 selection. Why can't there be a separate launcher for different modes? I did select the damn mode previously, let me play already!
3) The game does not remember the custom settings for single player game, you have to re-select them from the scratch every time you start a new game.
4) Enemy AI is retarded. Diplomacy makes no sense whatsoever. No, I don't want to gift you luxuries Gandhi, I'd rather crush you like a bug because you called my army puny.

Make a shortcut to the exe you want ;)
CivilizationV.exe (DX9)
CivilizationV_DX11.exe (DX10-11)

I really like the game, but kinda agree with this. They are always asking for shit for free. In addition, no one will trade me a luxury good straight up for a different luxury good. I was trying to get silk, and offered dye, dye plus 50gold, and dye plus gems; the bastard wouldn't take any of it. What gives?

given 2K's recent lack of support for the PC version of Bishock 2 it seems they have decided to go to the darkside and care more for console releases.

does not bode well for civ 5 support

Depends how much they like you. You can ask for silk and hit the "what will make this deal work?" button, they'll either tell you and you can try to negotiate from there or they might say "Nothing will make this work."

Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date, as I mentiond a page or two back. That really improved performance and graphics quality for me.

a quick check shows the game runs on up to 8 cores according to the ini by default.

my quad is being used during gameplay it appears.

I just experienced weird issue. Somehow Russians managed to explore a bunch of ruins and got 5 unit upgrades in a row, getting a rifleman squad at ~1200 BC. That's freaking lucky if you ask me.

Same thing happened to me. I walked a warrior around and ended up with an infantry by 2500BC... then killed all of the AI players.

My graphics drivers are up to date (I did a clean install), looks fantastic doesn't seem to be graphical lag what so ever.

My game crashes after an hour whether i play in dx11 or 9, Getting pretty annoying

Ugg I am so disappointed with this game :(

I have a Core i5 which is plenty fast, although any larger games max out my memory (4GB) and the game slows to a crawl.

The happiness calculation is ridiculous. I am allied with several maritime city states which results in a lot of food for my cities. Thus, when I capture a city it begins generating a lot of unhappiness very quickly, even if I keep it as a puppet. I am not even able to raze former capital cities?!? If I raze one of my captured cities, my empire is unhappy until it finishes burning. The most practical option is to gift captured cities to another empire and then take it out later :(
