The Civilization V Thread

Well paying gold isn't a penalty, you're really just exchanging the cost of one resource for another, since the build time is essentially just another resource. The exchange is pretty fair, I think what he was trying to say is there should be a penalty above simply an exchange of resources, although the units do seem a little expensive so maybe the time vs gold cost is already offset to account for this.

Yes, my son has this issue still.

Also, I have the crash issue, but it was reduced after the big patch. However, it still crashes once or twice a night, typically around 8 turns after the auto save...lol

There is an option in the settings to enable this. I had the problem until I found it... truly is a life savor... was so annoying at first...

An option to enable crashing? Or disable autosave? Not sure what option you are talking about.

Can anyone provide some basic game tips?

I'm a newb to Civ games. I don't do micro-managing. But, I heard that Civ 5 was much better for those like me who wanted to get in on the action without having to do everything.

So, I convinced my wife to pick it up for me.

I started a quick game, but I really have no clue as to the balance level of things. How many workers should I try to build to start? How long should I wait before I make a new city? How many warriors should I get at the beginning? Should I keep my military close by early on? Or should I send them out to explore the whole map quickly? Is there a particular tech tree branch I shouldn't overlook? Should I go down the tree branches fairly evenly or focus in one area? Is there a "Civ for Beginners" kind of walkthrough?

Uggg. You would think after what? 20 years? They would have optimized this damn game not to take forever to get thru a turn! ARRRRRGG!

In the beggining probably best just do as your advisors suggest but really the way is trial and error.

I usually do one worker per city early on and have them build the resources first cause there's usually some type of bonus. Also check your area and see if any of those resource require a certain tech to improve, like furs you would need trapping, gold needs mining, marble needs masonry etc. Unless you want to rush early (very difficult I notice in this version of civ), you just want enough warriors to not be completely vulnerable and clear out barbarians. Use scout to explore the map cause they're faster. send out trireme on a water map to explore. As for tech, you kind' of try to figure out which tech is more worthwhile as you play, the advisors will help in this area.

I usually try to get a second city going pretty early, just so I can double up on the production and resources, but I don't think it is as important in this version of Civ. Also, look at possibly buying a few key tiles early on - either to like your territory together or to get access to resources since it can take a long time for culture growth. And always be aware of your happiness situation, and be looking for ways to get happiness resources.

I had never played any CiV games. Played my first CiV 5 game about 3 days ago. Today i just beat the immortal difficulty. Conclusion: this game is easy. Also, the AI in this game is extremely dumb, especially when it comes down to warfare.

Cool Story Bro. This game was not meant for members of MENSA.

It is easier than previous versions - or so it seems to me. The change to only needing to capture capital cities, along with the stupidity/passivity of the AI makes it very easy to make a capital city rush in the late game and win an easy conquest victory.

I strongly disagree, the AI is by far the dumbest when it comes to diplomacy.

I learned recently that if YOU don't discover (create) a Wonder of the World first, someone else will. I got a couple (maybe 3), but the rest were built by others. That was kind of unexpected. I guess if I think about it, it makes sense (there can only be one Great Wall) but I was kind of disappointed that I didn't get to have it. Then it became a race to see if I could pump something out before someone else did. I lost some resources because I was only 3 or 4 turns away from a Wonder, only to have someone else beat me there. Wasted time.

If you lose a race to a wonder, the accumulated production gets turned into money. Not a total loss, at least.

Pick and choose your Wonders - some have good benefits, others not so much. Pick ones that match the victory you are trying for, cultural, technology, military, etc.

I try to get Stonehenge as fast as can, it provides huge bonus to culture, which helps expansion. Then i try to get the Great Wall, which makes invasion harder and buys you a few turns in case it happens.

Any tips on how to cross oceans?

I'm on a small map (first couple of games ever on Civ) and I have taken over my whole continent. But, it was only city-states. There are no other Civ's on my continent. I'm surrounded by water.

Do I just "embark" a couple of units to explore?
Should I get a settler going off to one of the other mainlands? Can a settler cross water?
Should I be worried at all? Should I just forget the other Civs and go for a cultural victory since I am protected by the ocean?

Well you could embark units but thats dangerous because barbarian naval units will just one shot your units. You need to make your own naval units, like trireme or better yet, the caravel. These you can set to auto explore, like scouts, until you are ready to settle another land mass. Then when you are ready to settle another continent, just have your naval units provide escort.

As far as the wonders go, you should try playing darius sometime, get the chitzen itza (sp), and then the taj mahal (sp). Those 49 turn golden ages rock by the way. I always try to get both of these wonders no matter what character I'm playing...

You need a a tech to cross ocean, if you have optics your ships/units can use coastal water tiles (light blue) but not ocean tile (darker blue). i think astronomy is the tech you need. Yea watch out for pirate ships unless you're playing as Askia whose embark units can defend themselves. I have tried and yet to achieve cultural victory actually I keep running out of time. I did notice the AI are worse on a water map than one in which its mostly land, they just barely expand at all even on difficulties that gives them bonuses.

If you are running into the time ending, go into advance setup or whatever and disable the win by time option, (there are like 5 check boxes for win conditions). I don't like the 500 turn limit, so I always disable that option.

Play as Egypt, they start with a 20% wonder building bonus. Get the tradition policy as soon as possible and take the 33% wonder bonus as your second policy. Playing at prince difficulty I can easily build all but one wonder (I always lose the great lighthouse or the colossus to someone else at the beginning)

and maybe you have marble near your capital then its total win for wonders

Another "newb" question:

How do you take over Civ's later in the game?

My map is a group of five continents surrounded by water. I conquered the City-States on my continent and the one to my west. The othe main continents have the competing Civ's which now have multiple cities and fairly strong positions.

Do you just make a whole bunch of seige weapons and take them one city at a time? Do you take out the units first?

Taking over a City-State seems fairly easy. You just bomb it to pieces and mop up any units nearby. But, a multiple city Civilization ... well, that seems a lot tougher. I just don't know where to begin.

While siege weapons are very useful for bombing cities almost any melee attack will take them out it seems. It may be better to try taking the weaker cities out first without them.

I'd start buy taking a weaker city, heal up your units quickly in the city (+3 health per turn) and them move on to the next. This can be especially helpful if you have bonuses for fighting in friendly territory.

You can also stave cities by blocking their water resources with ships, and even bombarding cities with them.

I usually swarm troops around the stronger cities with range units to back them up and take them out in one shot. When they ask why are my troops near the border I tell them I'm just passing by. :D

Yeah, the AI is stupid that way. This strategy works well - you want to bring overwhelming force to bear because the ability of the cities to bombard units makes it very difficult to take them over with just a few units. Gather your forces and then try to take the city in one turn, if possible. Usually after you take a few cities the AI will start talking peace treaty, and you can try to get good terms.

Remember that a conquest victory only requires taking over the other civs capital cities, so you can do a capital rush and win without grinding through their entire empire.

Beware the happiness hit you'll take when you take the city also - makes it very hard to take a lot of enemy cities over. Razing is useful, especially for small or unimportant cities.

Also, you can use a city-state on their continent to stage your forces - pay the city-state off to make it an ally, then park your forces there before you assault - that way you aren't stuck with a lot of embarked units that are easy to one-shot kill.

I'm finding the game too boring and going back to Civ IV for a while. Ah, well.

I'm at 90 achievements now, trying to figure out a few more. I cannot seem to get the one where you have to circumnavigate the world but on land. It seems like if you save the game, after you reload it, the game re-centers the land masses to not expand beyond the edges. And no, I cannot avoid the reloading as the game crashes so frequently still. That one and deity level have eluded me so far...
