Even if someone i built a computer for had a problem ( aquaero dies / resistor problems on the aquastream controller ) i would not send it to anyone in the U.S. unless they were fully authorized by AC IMHO. That would be great burn a copy of the firmware and tell everyone what your doing while chris and sebastian from AC look at this thread from time to time. I dont want my name or user name anywhere near something like that.
Actually I tried to flash that unit myself and through a simple process of elimination I determined that the problem was not software or firmware in origin and it took all of about 30 minutes of my time. Then I let R1ckCa1n and Sharka know what it was. Sharka suggested that they send it to Germany and I told R1ckCa1n how it could probably be fixed in short order. I was right and R1ck now has a nice Aquaero with V4 firmware chugging along happily in his box right now. It didn't need to travel thousands of miles by air and lots of $$ later to be returned for a simple fix.
There is absolutely nothing illegal in making a backup copy of firmware for the purpose of which I stated. So who really cares who is listening in to this conversation? I have a nice EPROM burner that does all kinds of interesting things and I put it to good use. I have a lot of very expensive hardware hanging around that I want to be able to service myself. Making a copy of firmware is simply a last resort to me because I would rather send my unit over to a USA dealer or their representative and have them take care of the problem. Besides the firmware is readily and publicly available. The only thing different that I am proposing is to use an instrument (i.e. eprom tools and software) to facillitate what I already know how to do. And as far as SMD components go anyone with a decent hand and a good eye can discern how to fix simple problems with a SMD gun.
My personal opinion is that A-C dealers who are a long ways from Germany should just get the factory to send them a 20% addition to their electronic components and let them take the risk of fixing their own stuff and leave the factory totally out of the picture except for those problems that are obviously QC in nature that they need to be informed about.
