Switch 2 Reveal incomming

Nintendo Switch 2 Docked and Handheld Performance Revealed By Tipster

It is a known fact that the Switch 2 is by no means planning on being a performance beast. Nintendo's focus has always been on their ecosystem, and not on raw performance, which will continue being the case. As such, the Switch 2 is widely expected to sport an NVIDIA Tegra SoC paired with 12 GB of LPDDR5 system memory and an Ampere-based GPU. Now, a fresh leak has detailed the docked and handheld mode performance that can be expected from the widely anticipated Switch successor, and the numbers seem to fall right around what was initially expected.

The leak, sourced from a Nintendo forum, reveals that in docked mode, the Nintendo Switch 2's GPU will be clocked at 1000 MHz, up from 768 MHz for the soon-to-be previous generation Switch, allowing for 3.1 TFLOPS of performance. In handheld mode, unsurprisingly, the GPU clock will be limited to 561 MHz, allowing for 1.71 TFLOPS of raw performance. These numbers are far from impressive for 2025, although Nintendo will likely make up for the lack of raw horsepower using upscaling technologies similar to DLSS, allowing for a vastly improved experience than what its otherwise unimpressive hardware could have afforded.”

The switch is doing something novel, versus fighting for the top end. The N64 aside, that is mostly what Nintendo does.

That is nearly a 620% performance increase over the original switch when docked.
Essentially when in handheld mode it runs like a PS4, and when docked it's closer to a PS4 Pro.

I wouldn't call any of that bad, it has higher numbers than a Steam Deck in handheld mode, as that comes in closer to 1.6.

Given Nintendo's history of platform optimizations, I think they could do a lot with that hardware.

Yes it is not purely a bad thing, but take the F5 save for an example, it is a double edged sword, lot of game reaching a savable point or not was part of the experience (or having to always start from 0), yes you can easily mimic that by saving in a similar way or not at all, but it existance and having used it can break things in your mind, like having used cheat or some mode in a game)

I would go with the yes you need to love the hardware-collection for it to be worth it, the emulation having got more than good enough to do the tricks, but I can believe someone that something is different in some way in a VM in some game (not the popular game-console combo so well made that speed run from emulator are accepted type, but more obscure) or have the type of mind that even the possibility of saving ruin the experience a bit.
I'm not going to poopoo on anyone's ideal setup of what is needed to relive nostalgia, but I will say the save state revitalized my desire completely, for me just playing the game to completion is what I care about, doing it in a way that maximizes my "skill" at the game is not. Being able to play for 20 minutes, finish level 3, save state and I'll play more later, or here's that MFing place with the medusa heads knock you off the ledge if they hit you... RELOAD! Cheating? Yeah sure I'll take that. But I also bought an NES Advantage too, and auto-fire or slow motion that the controller did is "cheating" too but whatever.

But like I said, whatever works for you is fine by me, even if I didn't do any of that other stuff playing on my computer works for me.

This is sad actually as AMD and Intel Steam Deck clones have better methods of dealing with power demand. Instead of Nintendo putting this onto developers to essentially make it so games can essentially turn into the Switch 2 S, the PC handheld's can simply lower wattage. Hallow Knight can last for 8 hours, but the same game on the Switch lasts 3-4 hours. On the flip side TOTK also gets 3-4 hours on the Switch while Baldur's Gate 3 can only last for 1 hour and 30 minutes on the Deck. Instead of evolving the Switch 2 to draw power based on demand, they just enforce the same rules as they did with the original Switch.

Just give us mario cart and a mature gritty zelda on another platform, no interest in an over priced tablet
I don't know I'm not going to lie... I been having more fun playing the kids new Legend of Link game then any other Zelda I have played in years.
I know with live action stuff coming they probably will go and do another Zelda proper. The echo game is pretty cool. Maybe I'm just old but I like the updated, twisted retro stuff.
My only complaint with Nintendo is having to pay their price for games.

Gonna be interesting to see how long they drag this whole thing out. Literally all the leaks were correct, even down to the teaser announcement today and a new Mario Kart reveal. Hopefully they roll this thing out sometime sooner than later.

So the big reveal... the handheld set will be a little bit bigger and a whole lot less colorful... ENJOY!

It also supports physical games, you insert a card of some kind.
The most cost-effective console and probably the cheapest games for it, the Xbox Series S, in my opinion, I don't think there's anything better for playing games in 1080p on a TV.

In theory, sure. You're still missing the exclusives on the Sony, MS, and Valve systems, which definitely have an appeal that's different from Mario Kart and Zelda.

Mind you, we also don’t know how Nintendo will do its usual color variations. I can see, say, a white model popping up, along with special editions in varying colors.

Will you all keep your OG Switch when this comes out or sell when you buy the 2?

I'll probably give mine away or sell it super cheap. I can't imagine ever playing it again if the 2 is backwardly compatible. It's already too bulky for traveling as it is, so being a little smaller than the 2 won't make much difference.

If true that is quite impressive. Yes the PS4 Pro is almost a decade old, but still, not bad for a small form factor mobile device.

The price leaked as €399, so I'm not sure how that lands elsewhere with exchange rates, tariffs, and taxes but take that as you will.

Or they'll just make you play at sub-30 FPS in first party games, like they have been doing lately. Zelda TOTK and EoW both run like crap on original Switch hardware.

Considering the specs of the latest iPhone, can be hard to be impressed these days, we are used to really high price point for small form factor specs.

iPhone 16 has what around 2.15 tflops in handheld mode, 2.4 for the pro vs 1.71 for the Switch 2 and 1.6 for a steamdeck, but then again those start at $800.....

Looks oddly familiar doesn't it?

I swear I remember predicting that the Switch 2 may go to $500, and some people here swear that would never happen. If it's €399 in Europe then it'll be $450 in America and the rumors seem to support this. As a reminder, the Steam Deck for $400 has 256GB of storage. That's the same amount of storage the Switch 2 is rumored to come with.

at $399.99 it'll still sell, but adoption will be slow IMO. It looks so similar to the original Switch I don't see normies who just play switch games understanding why they need it or want it tbh.

In for one! I skipped switch 1 thinking this would come sooner (plus I own a wii u with a lot of games). Glad the day is coming finally.

If it's $400 or less it'll sell like the proverbial gangbusters — more than every handheld gaming PC combined, almost certainly. And that's not so much knocking Valve/Lenovo/Acer as it is acknowledging that they have inherent disadvantages in price, ease of use, and must-have games.

I won't be surprised if the original Switch sticks around for a while, possibly at a discounted price, in the same way that earlier Nintendo portables have remained on sale during transitional periods.

At 400 I don't think so, it barely looks different. Most people aren't hardware enthusiasts. 299 i could see it selling out for months. They'll need some massive exclusive title to get people to move at 399, even then it might not be enough.

I won't be surprised if sales are slower than in the heyday, but remember that Nintendo has also built up a massive amount of goodwill, attracted important developers, and has knacks for both launch-era games and generating overall buzz. That and $400 isn't as off-putting in 2025 as it would've been a few years ago, let alone in 2017.

That and, despite the PS5 Pro, the console market is on cruise control at the moment; Nintendo will shine like a star simply because it'll be the only one with truly new hardware.

I'm wondering if Switch 1 & 2 can play online together for older Switch 1 games like the current Mario Kart 8.

People will already have a bunch of extra controllers, a game library and so on, but if they want a big sell-out FOMO release outside the holiday season to happen, a reasonable price and a big Switch 2 title at launch would not hurt...

399 euros is only 410 usd right now, but the EU charges a lot more for electronics than in the US and they have a bunch of extra fees that get put in at MSRP there.

Either way the bets are on it outselling the original Switch in its first year.

I'd estimate that the install base is large enough that even a small fraction of enthusiasts will be enough to power excellent sales through the first year at the very least.

The question is: are those enthusiasts going to go for a switch again? For myself: now that we have a true handheld pc market, I am definitely not going to regardless of pricing. I will cut my losses on the nintendo ecosystem when my current switch breaks down.

The console business model in general and nintendo's in particular have made me an un-fan.
