Switch 2 Reveal incomming

I was always under the impression the Wii U flopped because of marketing. Everyone I knew thought it was just the Wii but with a remote display. I don’t need that I’ve got a second TV just for my consoles… A few thought it was essentially the pro version of the Wii, a moderate upgrade.
Exceptionally few realized it was a different console so most of the public passed it over.

They did a terrible job of differentiating the Wii U and normal Wii, brand-wise. I like to think they won't make that mistake again, but I guess time will tell. It'll be interesting to see how they handle exclusive Switch 2 games vs. Switch 1 games, vs. games that work on both.

Its going to be a big challenge.
As much as everyone likes to say they need third party development.... those devs are attracted to the 140m unit install base of the switch. Making games specifically for switch2 that can't run on switch1 seems fool hearty. It would be like making AAA VR only games on PC. You have to consider the sales ceiling making switch 2 games, if there are only 5 million units in existence you can't make a game that needs to sell 5 million copies to make profit. Or you have to play a long game like Nintendo does with first party and make games that can sell for years so new switch 2 buyers continue to drive sales of your game. Nintendo gets away with charging essentially launch price for Mario/Zelda/DK/Pokee games for years... I can't thnk of any other game publishers that can do that. For sure when you think of all the potential AAA titles and sports titles that are numbered of have yearly editions, those games can't go on for years at high pricing. No one is paying 90 bucks for something like a call of duty game if their is a higher number version of that game on the market.

The one big advantage the switch 2 might get in third party is Nvidia. Nvidia may be helping behind the scenes to get games on switch. We have had rumors for over a year now that the Project Digits style Nvidia SOC are coming to consumer devices late this year. If there is any truth to that... and imo everything is pointing that way. Nvidia may want a some AAA developers getting switch2 software out this summer/fall. As much as we talk about Nvidia working with Valve and or MS on ARM translation layers, which I'm sure they are. Imagine how much of a game changer it would be if NV launches hardware in mini console like units, laptops, handheld... and some AAA developers actually dropped NV native ports of some big AAA titles.

I have an almost 7 year old grand daughter who asks me a couple times a week when we can go to the theater to see Mario 2.
Are you my FIL, by chance?

I have to tell my same-aged girl a "Bowser Story" every night before bed, and we watch the mario movie bi-weekly!

Keeping this related to the switch 2, I hope we see third-party controller cases from the start. I can't play my OG switch handheld without my retroflag controller case. Also hoping switch 1 bluetooth controllers will stright translate to the switch 2 since the button layout seems identical.

Combo of bad marketing outside of Japan, a lack of games, and the 3DS being so solid. Nintendo also functionally killed the system when they decided not to release BOTW earlier on the wiiu.

Still, I don’t regret getting mine. Xenoblade Chronicles X is an amazing game that unfortunately will never see the light of day outside the wiiu, and BOTW plays better on WIIU IMO. Also, the wiiu will be more valuable moving forward since you have a single box that can natively play GC/Wii/Wiiu.
Pretty sure they're making Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Switch as we speak. I believe I watched the release trailer for it the other week. Rejoice!

EDIT - Yep! Here you go: https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/p...6KsDYvo5M8kjbt4cPjmineay6Lh3Ji0pppUoOjd2fxwhl

Took them long enough. It’s a very good game, a lot of people skipped it because of being WiiU only.
I almost bought it but didn't because I don't have time to get into a massive RPG like that. Kind of regret that but I'm glad they're porting it forward. Not a whole lot of games are Wii U exclusive these days. As much as we love ours there isn't a whole lot of reason to hold onto it anymore.

I still keep it since it natively plays GC and Wii.

Can someone explain this connection with magnets? Will it be good? As far as I know about electronics and any mechanics (mechanical watches for example), magnets are not a good thing at all. Will this connection of the joy cons be a problem? As far as I can see, the joy cons go inside, there is a slot, there is a male connector on the console, and a female connector on the joy con.
How do these joy cons connect to the switch 1?

DukenukemX we'll have to disagree on Nintendo. lol :) You say the WiiU died cause it didn't have the games.... I mean Mario Kart 8 and Zelda Breath of the wild are both WiiU games, both are in the top 10 best selling games of all time. Not just for that gen... all time. Splatoon was a WiiU game that sold 5 million copies... meaing 1/3 of WiiU owners bought that game. As for speicfic sales for WiiU on Kart 8 8.46 million WiiU copies. Super mario World 5.89 million copies. Super Smash Bros Wii U 5.38 Million copies. The top 20 WiiU games sold 65 million copies. I am not saying the WiiU was a hit... but Nintendo did not loose money on the WiiU as crazy as that sounds. Games were not the WiiUs main issue.
Breath of the Wild was released on the WiiU... at the same time as it was released for the Switch. Nintendo has done this multiple times which is why there are Zelda games for multiple Nintendo consoles. Zelda games are usually released between console cycles. The WiiU did have good games from Nintendo, but this should also emphasize the need for 3rd party games to be ported, and probably why the WiiU failed. You're not going to buy a WiiU that's slightly faster than the PS3, but also much slower than the soon to be released PS4. You can't tell me that the WiiU games were better than the exclusives on the PS4. The WiiU and the PS4 were released one year apart. This is similar to the situation where Atari released their Jaguar console which was better than the SNES and Genesis, but was a year away from the Playstation release.

As for emulation to replace a switch. Ya that isn't an option for the mass market. Not only is it completely illegal, even if eveyr company in the world was all of a sudden ok with piracy... I hope few people are putting hacked emulators with warzed games on a system for their kids. What a shit lesson to impart. If the answer is... well you should only emulate games you buy. Well Nintendo still makes out like a bandit considering how much they charge for games.
Nintendo needs to wake up and port their games to other platforms. Morality goes out the window when you force people to play these games on old outdated hardware and can't be played on any machine you'd like.

lol Also if enough people were to buy something specific like a Steam Deck to run emulators on... eventually Valve ends up in a law suit with Nintendo.
This has already happened with Dolphin.
Which no doubt results in Valve adding firmware to their device that puts a stop to emulation. None of us want that. But ya if it ever became a wide spread thing Valve would be forced to end it.
No they wouldn't. The Steam Deck does allow you to run games that aren't from Steam. The Steam Deck even allows you to run it as a desktop PC. Valve doesn't even stop people from pirating Steam games on the Deck, let alone Nintendo games.
As for Sega and Nintendo. Not even comparable at this point. NIntendos Market cap is 68-72 billion depending on the week making them the largest video game company in the world. In 2023 Nintendo profited 2.8 billion on 12.8 billion in revenue. (which was down from record years the couple years prior to that thanks to Switch sales) SEGA on the other hand has a market cap under 4b... with 2023 profits of 46 billion yen (290 million USD) on total revenue of 4.38 billion. SEGA was/is desperate... its a little company scratching out a 6% margin. Nintendo has the second highest gaming revenue between Sony and MS... is the largest game publisher in the world by a huge margin, and is depositing almost 3 billion in cash a year into its coffers. (think their record year after the switch launch it was closer to 6 billion in proift) Nintendo isn't going to sell its golden geese.
Don't care, because Sega does port their games to PC. Remember, not long ago Nintendo was in a much worse situation than Sega. They almost Sega'd themselves.

I've grown accepting that Nintendo hardware is going to be lagging behind for the foreseeable future. I don't like it, but I can live with it. Clearly they seem to be able to make it work. At least their stuff isn't so bad I can't tolerate it.

The area where they seriously need to improve is online play. It's baaaad. Everything from their clunky required mobile app to a userbase playing on random Wi-Fi hotspots, to just their network in general. It's tough to play anything with precision even if you're on a wired fiber connection and your friends are, too. There's also rampant cheating (that has been going on for years and years) in their own titles that has never been fixed. It's all bad, and that's how most people play games these days. They're gonna need to do something about that at some point.

Rampant cheating, what exactly is this about? So are people cheating here too, why can't they play the game normally?

Linus says that the joy-cons have lasers and that they can supposedly be used as a mouse.

Someone left a comment: Nintendo: We're releasing the Switch 2.
Microsoft: This is an Xbox.

Is that true, considering that as far as I know Xbox hasn't announced any new consoles?

Nintendo has been smart with their Zelda release timing your right. The Zelda games have been some of their most expensive games to develop. The advantage of aiming at the middle and releasing on old and new hardware is, you get a launch title with out loosing pre installed base of customers. This is one of the problems for third party developers supporting any console including Sony and MS. It is a big part of the reason Sony and MS have been forced to buy studios. No one wants to produce a game with a 100m+ budget... and release it on a brand new console with ZERO install base, that the console MFG is going to only be able to ship a few million of in the first few months even if the console is a hit. This makes the marketing budget mostly a waste of money. You can't sell millions copies of a game in the first few months to break even if there are only a few million consoles in the world that can run your game. If we go back further to before Sony and MS would just buy studios they used to do things like cover marketing budgets... and year post launch marketing for third parties.

This is the problem with third party Nintendo, and every other consoles next gen hardware. No one is going to want to make Switch2 exclusives until their are enough switch2s in the world for them to have a shot to break even. Its the same issue PC VR has. No one is going to invest a 100m+ AAA budget into making a VR game... even if every single VR hardware owner buys a copy you still loose money. Anything that comes to switch2 out of the gate is going to also have to run on Switch 1 and the 140m install base switch 1 has. Same is true for Sony... when they release a PS6, third party studios are not going to release that generations far cry style game that won't run on a PS5. You can't sell enough copies to break even. The solution for Sony and MS has been to buy game studios and release games for their new consoles anyway. They are doing the same exact thing Nintendo is doing. No one says hey Sony needs to attract more games from studios they don't own. Sony game studios, and exclusive titles that brings is seen as a strength?

Nintendo can't rely on external game studios to sell their units. If Nintendo wants to move switch units they need to produce more games. Themselves. Or buy studios, just like Sony and MS do.

Again the Steam Deck isn't the same product at all. Steam Deck is a Linux PC in a handheld format. Its not a console. It isn't competition for Nintendo. You can argue its competition for PS and Xbox a little more as the PC games the deck runs are mostly the same games. Emulation also does not count it isn't legal, I mean the argument that you can break the law isn't a good one. You can make the same argument about the other guys consoles. You can build a PC and run the software you want as well... you can warez some games if you like. Heck you don't even need to use emulators you can just illegally download PC games. Even easier. Wait you can illegally download PC games... on your Deck. So I guess the Deck is just the perfect console killer. :)

When you fire up Mario Kart and one person has a star or lightning the entire race over and over and over, that's not normally possible and they're gonna win every race. It also ruins the game for everyone else. Or you start up a game of Mario Party and your opponent is mysteriously able to buy stars from every vendor in spite of having 0 coins. Or players in Smash getting awarded wins when they have 10 deaths and 0 kills. Whatever anti-cheating mechanisms are in place for Nintendo online systems = extremely weak. It's not to say people aren't cheating in other games or on other platforms, but it's rampant in the few semi-competitive Switch games. That combined with horrible latency and a bad infrastructure to begin with makes me never want to play any of their games online outside of 1 on 1 with my friends. Even then it's still laggy and clumsy with their lack of communications. At this point I really only play face-to-face a couple times a year as a result. The Xbox 360 is almost 20 years old and it had better online play back in 2005.

Yes, they should solve that online then. While I was playing Battlefield 1 PC it was always ok and good, despite my bad and very slow internet, but you always choose and play where you are, European servers in my case.
I didn't even notice much cheaters. And I always played CQ mode with 64 players.I believe that Nintendo Switch games are not as graphically and technically demanding as Battlefield or CoD games.

I’ve used the shit out of my Switch OLED to play smaller indie titles like Dredge, and honestly it’s the console of choice for JRPG fans. IMO Nintendo doesn’t really need big 3rd party support to be successful. No one is buying a switch to play COD anyways.

How do these joy cons connect to the switch 1?
One would think through an adapter, if at all. Bear in mind the 2 joycons are physically bigger than the switch, so you'd have them overhanging the console body. I suspect it'd look aesthetically displeasing enough that Nintendo just doesn't make it possible.

It is not the console of choice for JRPGs. That is the PS5. I agree 3rd party support is pointless for the Switch. The biggest 3rd party games only sell a couple hundred thousand units for the switch.

Rare used to be an interesting third party, but, well, we saw how that went.

I fly to Japan like monthly and pickup my switch games. All the games are Switch are mobile that I care about. Maybe for English localized games you might be right, but I really don’t see it. Reality is both platforms get both but I personally like the switch exclusives better. Besides, PS5 isn’t portable.

The main problem with the Wii U is it tried to compete with Xbox and Playstation, while being late, with new versions of those consoles around the corner that would be faster. They wanted to return to be able to play mainstream games, but most people already had the other consoles. The gimmick it brought wasn't all that useful either.

Yeah, they would have been better skipping the game pad and just making it a cheaper console. However, the lack of solid first party titles is truly what killed it. Not giving WiiU owners BOTW earlier, a solid Mario, a Metroid, etc really hurt it. Had WiiU had BOTW within the first year of launch I think the WiiU would have sold a whole hell of a lot better.

My argument against the Switch 2 is that it offers nothing else but playing Switch1/2 games. When the original Switch was announced I thought it was gonna run Android and be able to run Android games. The stupid thing can't even run Netflix. It doesn't even have Roblox. I've been able to get these running on my Switch because I modded it. Sony sold more Playstation 2's and 3's because of the use of the DVD/Blu-Ray formats. If you wanna sell more hardware then give people other reasons to buy your hardware.

But why? Cause you say so? You can play Doom 2016 on both the Switch and Steam Deck. You can play a number of games on both platforms. Because Nintendo has Mario and Zelda? You know how many games you can't ever get on the Switch or Switch 2? Like it or not these two machines are competing. Not just those two, because you have many other machines. If you're the person who wants to play the games, do you think they really care if it's legal? What if you wanna play Baldur's Gate 3 and Mario Odyssey on your trip to Tahiti? You're not going to carry both a Switch and a Steam Deck. What if you legally own the game? It's not peoples fault that Nintendo won't port their games to other platforms.

145 million Switches disagree with you.
Nintendo didn't try and fail to shut down two Switch emulators just because Nintendo realized that Switch emulation exists. You could play Mario Odyssey on your PC back in 2019 and you mean to tell me that Nintendo five years later has realized that Switch emulation exists? Nintendo needs the Switch 2 to be successful, or become another studio that sells their games on the Steam store, like Microsoft and Sony. They don't want their games running on Steam Deck or clones.

As someone who has a switch purely for playing Mario Kart and Mario party when I bring drinking buddies or cute girls over, I can handily say that hardware enthusiasts going full autistic on visual fidelity, emulation and Linux stability etc ARE NOT the target audience, nor do they represent even 1% of any kind of market compared to the addressable market Nintendo has access to.

That is all Nintendo sells the switch as correct. As a handheld that plays Nintendo games. Not sure what your looking for. Its a Nintendo, it plays Nintendo games. If you want a device that does something else buy that. Nintendo doesn't care if you buy a Deck or a PC or a Playstation. Not sure why you believe a switch should do a bunch of other things. I mean but why? Cause you want it to? :) I think Nintendo knows what they are doing. Despite your assurance that the switch sucks cause it can't be used to watch netflix or run emulators or install software like it was a PC... that isn't what people are looking for. People keep pointing it out to you but I'll do it again. The Playstation 2 is the best selling console of all time for about 6 more months. By mid '25 the Switch 1 will be the highest selling console of ALL time. It will pass Nintendos own 3D handheld probably next month... and then it is only a few million more consoles from passing PS2. Everyone disagrees with you. The switch clearly does everything it needs to do. It doesn't need to play blu rays or let you install your free Epic game store games (I joke --- but you can do that on a deck lol).

As for the Deck being competition ya. Its not. You want to buy both go ahead. Nintendo is fine with that. You want to emulate their hardware... they aren't fine with that. Make sense. The majority of people that run emulation don't own the games they are emulating. We all know that is the case. Nintendo doesn't have to screw around with denuvo and other bs anti copy stuff like everyone else does, mainly because they are a one platform game developer. Maybe 10 years down the line Nintendo can't make hardware that sells anymore then sure it will make sense to develop their games for other platforms. Today though they have the largest install base of any other gaming system in the world... they would be insane to mess that up by releasing their golden geese games on other platforms. Are you not basically saying if you could legally run nintendo games on your deck you would never buy a switch? I mean with that as your argument why would they release games on other platforms. They make money on the consoles as well. You are also 10x more likely to buy other Nintendo games once you have Nintendo hardware.

I don't know if you've seen it, but someone left a comment on YouTube: "Nintendo: We're releasing the Switch 2.
Microsoft: This is an Xbox."
Is that true, considering that as far as I know Xbox hasn't announced any new consoles?
Does this mean that microsoft is pushing their games to nintendo and nintendo will no longer be exclusive to only its games? Microsoft and nvidia probably blackmailed them that if they don't agree to that, they won't sell them hardware for the new console. That's how it looks to me, nintendo switch 2 will become the new xbox?

I mean, mismanagement of first party titles, dwindling relevance in the market, Microsoft is perfectly following the 'Sega' strategy and going to software only.

Nintendo is in far better shape than Sony or Microsoft right now.

I don't know what shape they are in, but I believe they are all in good shape. The point is that Nvidia, Intel and AMD hold all the chips and Nintendo can't do anything without them regarding their new Switch 2 console. That could only mean that the worst situation will happen in Europe again, in the US the Switch 2 will be $350, in Europe it will be 500 euros. And Microsoft is switching to software only and will distribute its games through PS and Nintendo. On the other hand, they have the Xbox Series S and X, which are still good consoles but never became as popular as PS or Nintendo (obviously because of the games, i.e. exclusives that PS and Nintendo have)

I read the news that Nintendo Switch 2 has more views(YouTube)than the PS5.
PlayStation is doomed to eventually die just like Xbox. The first party titles aren’t that great anymore, and they all eventually come to PC anyways. Further, the PC is just better for cross platform games these days. Nintendo is smart with the switch and has entrenched themselves in a good position.

Consoles will not fail, many have grown up on them and will always buy them even if they also have a PC. And they are ideal for poorer countries. Xbox series S is a fairly affordable and good console.
