Starfield

Before that, I have to go all the way back to 2011 to find a game I bought at launch. Red Orchestra 2. It cost me $39.99

That was cheaper because it was an indie multiplayer game. That is often a trend, because the more copies that sell upfront the more copies it will sell later. Bigger budget MP games are full priced. Indie single player games are more aggressive with pricing because it isn't as important to get immediate sales. With MP games you need a high player base out of the gate.

And RO2 was kind of a mess technically at launch.

So I guess in my ~33 year history of PC gaming I have bought exactly 6 games at launch pricing :p

That would explain it. But $70 is the new standard, for big budget games.

Sqenix charged €80 for Forspoken. The first game that was $70 I remember very well, was Metro Exodus on EGS, while Tim claimed to be the gamers champion for justice. So the precedents go back a while.

I recall Metro Exodus launching at $50, a quick google search seems to show that is the case. But every other game that released on EGS was for $60 or $70, for AAA games. What I find interesting is the upcoming Assassin's Creed game will be $50.

If there is one thing you can't accuse them of is being against making more money. If there was real proof of this they'd all be standing in line, just as they all tried to make their own WOW or PUBG.

Exactly. If they priced the game at $1 they would sell many more copies, but their actual profits would be lower. I think they know more than anyone what they can sell their products for.

I sell a number of things for family/friends here. I'm still on a Ryzen 5700, so I couldn't activate one of those AMD codes on my own hardware even if I wanted to. They had no interest in the game itself and wanted to sell it. I'll occasionally put up their old CPUs/drives etc. as well. Think one of them still has an older Ryzen 3600 they may still have to sell come to think of it.

I did my playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 with FSR Quality settings back when I had my 6900xt just to give it a little bump, and honestly I could not tell the difference compared to native, unless I took a screenshot and compared them side to side.

Maybe the difference between the two grows the further away from "quality" you get, but quality is the only setting in either FSR or DLSS I've ever used.
The place I notice it more isn't in screenshots or standing around pixel peeping, it is in motion. I find TAA much the same, that it looks great standing still, but I notice the artifacts in motion. DLSS seems to be marginally better than FSR in quality mode for that.

But ya the real difference shows at lower modes, or also if you are just using them at a lower rez to begin with. Performance mode never looks amazing, trying to do 4x the pixels is just a big ask, but DLSS tends to be WAY better than FSR in that case. So if you have a 4k monitor/TV but a smol GPU, DLSS does a much better job salvaging the situation.

It's one of those things that isn't a big deal to me personally as I have a chonk and, like you, I've found FSR to be fine in quality mode, generally I prefer it (and DLSS) to TAA actually, I notice their artifacts less than the TAA blur.

Of course there is a limit to how low you can go and still have this relationship still hold true. While digital distribution has close to zero unit cost, it isn't completely zero, and at some point you will be limited by the PC user base.

This k of it this way. Diablo III is one of the best selling AAA PC titles of all time, at about 20 million copies sold.

I don't have current numbers, but as of 2021, Steam had over 120M unique monthly users, and there is more to the PC game market than just Steam

(years ago I would have suggested that everyone who plays games on the PC has at least a Steam account, but that is no longer the case, especially among many younger gamers. Judging by an unscientific sample on a Faceboon group I am on, many of the kids have an EGS account and a game pass and that's it.)

So, it seems like there is some room to grow by lowering prices, especially for games that are not setting records like Diablo.

I don't believe that publishers are as competent as you think. Everything I have seen suggests the opposite and that they would probably be distracted by "hurr durr more expensive is better" type of unsophisticated bean counters.

seems like Early Access is becoming a popular thing where more and more games are giving you that option as part of a Premium Edition...at least they are offering something of value versus silly pre-order exclusive outfits or weapons...I have the Standard Edition so won't be playing until Sept 6th...maybe Bethesda will feel generous and unlock the Standard Edition early

I spoke to a young guy at work who calls himself a gamer, and I asked him if he’d be playing Starfield this weekend, and he told me it wouldn’t be releasing until next year sometime. I guess I’m super hardcore without realizing it. Stuff like that happens all the time.

PC graphics options

PC Settings Menu: https://files.catbox.moe/lxyhyt.jpeg
Leaker reports they are running 3800x/2080ti @ 1440p on the above high settings.

He gets 45-60 fps most of the time, 60-70 fps in dungeons and space.

He is running FSR with render res way down.
Also the resolution setting is missing so there might be other missing options too.

Welp, looks like my paltry 3060 Ti probably can't handle 1440p medium. I need 60 fps minimum. 40s make me ill real quick. 50s take longer, but eventually :depressed:.
Might have to pick up a 7800 XT on release if that's even possible.

Heads up some leakers have finished the campaign and began sharing ending spoilers.
I see them tagged in a few places, but trolls are going to get their hands on them eventually. NG+ spoilers will probably show up sometime in the next 24 hours.

Be careful clicking any PM's. Shouldn't be an issue on these forums, but elsewhere...

3 must-play games coming out this month for me- Starfield, Lies of P and the Phantom Liberty expansion (I also never played the base Cyberpunk 2077 game so I'll be playing that first)...I take my time on first playthroughs and 2 of those 3 are pretty big games so I'm not sure how I'm going to divide things up...and October brings Lord of the Fallen and Alan Wake 2...I'm not sure I can get to all those games on Day 1 but I'm not sure which ones to hold back on

it would be an easy choice if one or more of them have some type of performance or other issues where it would be best to wait for a few patches

Digital Foundry early impressions: they're very impressed- gunplay, graphics, lighting, combat, animations, weapon models, soundtrack, audio are all excellent...also seems like a graphics upgrade compared to the earlier trailers vs the usual graphics downgrade...the most polished Bethesda game by far

the Starfield stuff is the first 10 minutes of the video:

Thanks for the heads up, but I have never found spoilers to be a problem before I play a game.

I usually don't know enough about the story to even understand them, and in the rare case I come across them I look away quickly, and don't even remember the spoilers by the time I get around to playing them game.

Really? So many things go into making a good game, and you are concerned with this? :p

Honestly, whether or not a game has raytracing is not even on my top 1000 list of "things I am interested in in a game" :p

gameplay is always most important...but graphics can make a game even better...it's about immersion...gameplay + graphics= gaming nirvana...Cyberpunk 2077 path-traced, Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, Dying Light 2 etc...those are all RT showcases which improved upon the gameplay
