PS3 camping update

im hoping/trying to cruise up to my local best buy (not so major of an area) at 9pm on wednesday to see what the status is inside the store (its a 24hr walmart) if theres nothing crazy, ill just hang out there and wait til 12 if they will be selling them at midnight and pick up one there.

My plan THEN is to go home get some sleep, drive to Sam's Club to be there at 6am (same non-crazy area) and get one. I called earlier in the week and someone told me 17, now they are telling me they dont know. I figure the 'sam's club' idea is the best bet as you have to have a membership to get it...at least SOME kind of help to my cause.

Then IF i get one there (1 or 2 total from walmart nite before) to shoot real quick across the highway to see if I can grab one at target too.

IM SHOOTING FOR 3! I got my dad looking at the target across from his hotel in Harrisburg since he's gone on business too.

Flame all you want, but all 3 of mine are going up on eBay (1 or 2 now, 1 or 2 next month pre-Christmas)

I got a vacation coming up, and want money for it as well as some nice presents for the family, girlfriend and myself ! (8800GTX / westinghouse 37")

...and just to appease any sony F-A-N-B-O-Y's ... i DO plan on buying one for myself. Just not right now!

I see no reason to flame! The *SMART* PS3 launch buyers are the ones who're ebaying them, end of story.

With it's mediocre launch lineup and absurd price, PS3 is a complete joke for 2006.

Personally, I put people who buy stuff just to resell it for a huge markup to get as big of a profit as possible for as little work as possible on about the same level as child rapists. But hey, that's just me.

Good. A large amount of people around here might put them on the same level as good capitalists = patriot = good american = if you're not this then you're a terrorist.

You terrorist.

what do you think 99% of the people on ebay are doing? selling items they have bought for a certain price, trying to get more than they paid for it. (other than people selling used things of course)

Its all supply and demand. Stores do it to us, upcharging us for items. I see no problem in buying it to sell it. If someone wants one that bad, let them go through the processes of camping or driving around to buy one. It's not taking advantage of someone by listing them on ebay, You are NOT swindling them, or giving them something they are not paying for. They CLEARLY know what they are bidding on, and if hey, they are stupid enough to pay more than retail for it, I sure as hell will be the one to make one back for myself for once!

You've got a best buy in a 24hr walmart in your area? Wow.

That's utterly absurd. A rape situation involves one person FORCING another to do something against their will. SELLING an item at auction involves *complete* consent on both the part of the seller AND the buyer. Nobody forces the buyer to spend double, triple or more the price, they CHOOSE to do it.

Without the freedom for individuals to MUTUALLY CONSENT to the exchange of goods and services *protected*, there are no rights *whatsoever* for anyone.

Quoted because it attacks one of the stupidest comments I've ever seen on this forum.

Wow. You, ... are a tool.

Don't fall for his flame bait. It's was obviously a ridiculous comparison.
We don't want the thread locked.

My walmart is letting people line up at 5am on Thursday although they claim to not know how many they'll have for sale.

What does all of this teach us?

Get a job at a retailer shortly after you learn about a big release. Even if the store doesn't give its employees dibs, maybe you can be one of the people unloading the trucks. :D

I live in a small considered rural area with population being somewhat in the 15K to 20K range. I just called my local Wally World and they said that there's already six people lined up in the layaway dept since yesterday (Tuesday) morning! here I thought I was going to be able to start my campout tonight around 10:00pm until Friday morning at midnight. I guess it doesnt look like thats going to happen because there will easily be ten people in line by the time I planned on showing up after work today.

so its my unofficial opinion by saying that these are some pretty nutty people for waiting OVER 49 hours for a gaming console that:

A) may or may not show up

and/or

B) might be a flop right out of the box with problems according to past problems with PS consoles at launch.

-I dont know.... oh well. I can only assume that these people either dont have jobs or are so well off that they can afford to sit in line for over 48 hours for a gaming console. oh well, I cant do that because I have to work for a living.

i think i am just going to do the "quick driveby" on my way to work friday morning to see what is going on. Though i would really really like to get one, my credit cards will definatly thank me if i do, because thats a few more months of finance charges that they can charge me, lol.

ill leave for work around 6am and drive by:

Wal-Mart (two of them, one is 24/7),
Sams Club (though i cannot find my membership card)
Target (my best hope i think),
Meijers (like wal-mart only regional 24/7 too)
Best Buy (no hope),
Toys R Us (no hope either since they pre-ordered)

And if i take the long way to work:

CompUSA (dont even know if they will be getting any in)
Meijers (yet another one 24/7)
Super Wal-Mart (yet another 24/7 walmart)
Circuit City

Im not even going to try the local Gamestop/EB Games.

so people who sell a product for what it is worth are as bad as child rapists? you are a communist, whether you know it or not. capitalism is one of the things that makes this country great.

If only it worked that way :D. I work at Target, and we were told anyone who buys a PS3 while on the clock or in uniform will be fired on the spot. I requested a few days off, and am just gunna camp. I still get my 10% off though!

WOW, I CANNOT believe that people still don't understand this. I am not camping for a game console, I am camping for a guaranteed 1000 dollar profit on each system I can get my hands on (2 hopefully). If you can make 2 grand in 3 days at your job then congrats, you wouldn't benefit from doing this. For anyone that makes less than 693 thousand dollars a year however camping for this would be profitable...

I'm starting to wonder if these numbers are realistic anymore. The Yahoo japan auctions are averaging about $200 over retail and they had less numbers per person than the US launch. See if everyone is selling theirs, then it's going to be far easier to push the price down. Don't get me wrong, you'll make a profit, but I don't think everyone is going to see $1000 profits.

Will be interesting to see what happens.

QFT. My goal is to profit atleast $1500. If I do... that means I am making $40 a hour to sit around in the cold and bullshit with some friends. I'd be making roughly 1/6th of my yearly income in less than 48 hours. Being a full time college student, and reduced to part time employment, it is an exellent money making opprotunity.

There are two kinds of people in the ebay game. Those who are willing to pay copious amounts of money to not have to wait in the cold to get a system, and those willing to wait in the cold to get a system in exchange for copious amounts of money. As far as I see it, its a win win situation.

I'm all for reselling on fleabay, but I'm gonna laugh if these things tank because everyone is selling theirs.

That being said, there is no way they will no fetch top dollar. Just not going to happen given the supply vs. demand.

EDIT

LOL, you guys are gonna bank. If I didn't get paid a ton at my job I'd go to camp right now:

But isn't this what any business does? I'm sure Target doesn't pass everything along at cost to be nice, I'm sure when I go in and buy a tube of toothpaste they bought it from a distributor cheaper than they're selling it to me. Given the opprotunity, I think they would like to turn as large of a profit off of that sale as they can. How is this any different? Their "value add" is that they are willing to waste 2 days standing in line to buy a PS3 when someone who buys it from them isn't. I know plenty of people who make $1000 a day at work, so taking off two days to stand in line cost more than paying a $600 premium on ebay (not that any of these people are going to buy one, but that's beside the point).

But will they still sell it to you?

I just called my local walmart and the conversation went like this:

Me: Hi, I was wondering if there was anyone waiting in line for the PS3 yet?

Inbred Hick: No its not out yet I think it comes out on friday

Me: No, I know its not out yet, but is there anyone there waiting for it yet?

Inbred Hick: Uhh... there is no waiting list I don't think, it comes out on friday...

Me: Right, but there is going to be a line of people there before friday, and I wanted to know if anyone was there yet.

Inbred Hick: Well, theres about 6 people here right now...

Me: ...and they are in line for the PS3?

Inbred Hick: No, one of them is buying a CD, another one is looking at TV's...

Me: *click*

well, i am online right now at my local circuit city. me and my buddy are first on line with our tents all set up. circuit city's delivery truck just came and the driver said he dropped off 15 60GBs. They have no 20GBs because of the shortage. I am also borrowing their wifi connection to type this post. :)

I'll post some pics of our camping a little later.

You don't by chance live in Snyder, TX do you lol?

Speaking of walmart, my local walmart is getting 4, 2 of each! It's a 24/7 walmart too (not a supercenter though). I expected it to be low, but 4?

LMAO

It's odd, but it seems like it's true that some Walmarts are not letting people line up before a certain time. The Supercenter close to me(my friends plan on camping there) just threw some people out of the store, and is refusing the let people camp anywhere around the store till noon tomarrow. My friend asked them how do they plan on doing that, and they replied that they have hired extra people for crowd control if they really need to kick people to the curb.

Which makes me wonder: why not sell them to you now, get you -and your liability- out of the parking lot, since it is pretty clear that you are going to be around till Friday, and be done with this fscking charade?

Because of something called a street date and lawsuits if they break it.

is a street date like one of those where you park on a drive way and drive on a parkway?

The18thLetter said:

Exatcly. Sony would tear them a new one if a store sold their PS3's early.

I think it'd be funny to just walk in front of all of those people when the doors open and grab my PS3. Just because you camp outside doesn't mean you get to go first :D

It was on the news people camping for the consoles already at EB and best buy here in GA, Im sorry but that is just insane. I guess the Sony Ceo was right after all, they could price it for 1000 and people would still buy it up. That is like some kind of cult following, I dont get it, someone help me understand. The Xbox 360s for instance have been out for a year and the graphics are just as good as the playstation yet people will still hold out a year because... its a playstation ? Im not critisizing anyone, I just fail to see whats so great about them.

What the hell happened to buying a gaming console to, oh, I don't know, play games on it?!

The way I see it, you're all buying PS3s with the pure and simple intention of denying it to people who want to buy it to play games on, so that you can sell them to these people at a high price to line your own pockets.

Disclaimer: the kotaku article has probably soured me on this whole thing.

This thread is making for good entertainment, though.

If you want to buy a PS3 just to play games, then wait until the next shipment. Being impatient is as greedy as selling for profit.

as I had promised.....

best buy @ 7am with 30 people already on line

wow, some of those guys don't look like "kids".

What a bunch of losers. No wonder the country is in the shape its in. The youth of today is willing to put in days and days of effort for a gaming console but you have to force them to do home work, or make them show up on time for their shifts at work. :(
