My girlfriend just got back from our local walmart (she picked up children of mana DS for me) and she told me that she talked to a manager there about the PS3. She said that she flirted with him a little and got him to say more than he was going to at first, but basically here are the things you should know:
-They are doing a midnight release
-They will be issuing tickets prior to the release
-They expect a small amount of people to camp for up to 1 WEEK before release, with most showing up the day before (x360 experience)
-They expect to get less than 20 units.
-He suggested she show up at least 72 hours in advance to have a decent shot at getting one...

Tell her to go back and flirt some more and get him to set one aside for her personally ;)

i'm gonna have real problems with my faith in humanity if i dont get a ps3 after camping for 30 hours before release

seriously.

I'm just waiting for the first reports of open bribery and people being suckerpunched in line to show up...

This kind of matters...
Where are you located? East Coast? West Coast?

I think that the midwest may be easier when it comes to getting the PS3.

My local Walmart supercenter tells me they will start a line at 5am on the 16th.
So that would be 19 hours in line. Not bad at all. I waited 15 1/2 hours for the Toys R Us pre-order and that was outside. 19 hours inside a Walmart is cake.
They don't know or won't say how many they're getting.
I want to be one of the first 5 people in line.

Because if more people want a PS3 more than you do obviously humanity has lost its mind. Are you implying that humanity should bend to your wishes, or that you believe you are the dregs of humanity and if there are more people willing to wait longer for the PS3 that something is wrong.

Either way, still kind of a backwards position to take.

ON TOPIC : My Walmart is getting 4, count em 4 PS3's

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

People need lives.

But it will be pretty hectic trying to get one on release night.

Haha...1 week....that is crazy. I need to give a bum some Arby's and have him just hold my spot in line. 1 roastbeef sandwich plus a can of beer per day :p

lol ^

seriously, I don't understand how you can start to stand in line... 1 week in advance. Rofl?

I plan on getting in line at midnight on the 16th. I figure if 24 hours of waiting isnt good enough, then so be it.

after all, 24 hours is crazy enough. anything more than that is absolutely insane!

at least they have nice weather. try that up north. some rain/snow moving in from the coast right now too.
I'm from New York.. lol.
There's a reason why I don't plan on camping more than 12 hours.

Well I plan on going with a friend and dragging my wife along so we can get two on Wednesday around 5:00pm. Thats about 30 hours prior. I am praying this is early enough......

Things are much better here (Midwest) my location should be getting at least fifty units. Also the weather is very cold, it looks like it will be in the 20s, that will minimize the people willing to camp out.

Nine days ahead of time? That's just dumb. Get a job which pays $8 an hour, work for twelve days and then buy one on Ebay.

$8 * 8 hours per day * 12 days work (Honestly this number should be larger, afterall, camping out is a 24/7 activity) = $768.

Unless the PS3 is going at over a $700 premium on eBay after release, which I doubt it will, waiting nine days is still foolish. Just from an economic perspective. Not counting the opporunity loss of the other fun things you could have been doing instead of standing in front of a Best Buy.

I think those guys are insane. It isn't worth it. The initial line-up isn't so hot IMHO.

For eBay though? Frickin' GOLD MINE!

The thing is they don't have any supplies! No tv or anything. What the heck are they going to do for 9 days?!?

Don't you guys have jobs or something? How can you camp out for 10-20-30 hours in the work week? Are you guys doing it to sell them on ebay to make money?

I'm a full time student and can afford to miss one day of class if it means making $500-1000 bucks. ;)

yeah, i guess...but i would venture to imagine that 30 hours is about the maximum that anyone would/should want to camp for a game system...i mean, im skipping a day of class for this...in the other thread that i posted, there's already people camping up to 10 days ahead of release. how far is the point where enough is enough and even the price you can get for them on ebay isnt worth the lost time, wages, education, social activities, etc lost?

You can't be serious. Maybe it's because I am an older gamer, but there is no way in hell any sane individual would believe that camping out for days, to get a freaking video game console, is normal behavior. That is obsessive and I dare say if you did that, you have a major problem with the priorities of things in your life.

The guys right Erasmus, anyone that camps out like that is crazy. It simply isn't worth it, especially when all you had to do was show up 30 minutes before your local Gamestop opened, like I did, to be first in line, like I was, to preorder it.

I'm betting that the PS3 will easily fetch $1K (or maybe a tad bit more) for at least a couple of weeks after it's initial release. after all, look at what happened with the xbox 360. same thing.

I'm taking two paid vacation days.

I'm waiting 48 hours... but not for the PS3. I'm waiting 48 hours for approximately $1000 in cash. That works out to about $20/hour (plus my usual daily salary) for 48 straight hours. Less than my usual rate, but totally worth it.

alot of the preorders were hitting 2000+. i imagine the release units will sell for that, if not more.

Wait til you see what they're hitting around December 20th, which will probably be the last day to reliably overnight a PS3 somewhere.

yeah, hopefully there will be another shipment out by then if i dont get a ps3 on launch :)

if i can get up to 3, im keeping one to play, selling one immediately to cover the costs (hopefully), and selling one in christmas rush.

Wow. That is worth it if you can make that much. I had no idea.

What do people think these will go for?

$2000 right now for the pre-orders...

What do you think for a Day after launch?
Between Thanksgiving and Dec. 1st??
And from Dec. 1st to Dec. 25th?

I'll prob get mine in Jan or Feb like I did with the 360 and pay retail for it. Gears of War will keep my busy, the multiplayer is a ton of fun.

I think in the week or two after launch the prices will drop a bit as a ton of people are going to flood eBay with them. I think they will peak two weeks before Christmas.
