Project: Stargate SG-1

ok im a little confused now. where is this going to be attached? not about the fish tank

I really have no concept of what this will look like when done, but it seems like its gonna be cool nonetheless.

Where is what going to be attached? I can answer your question if I know waht you're talking about.

cgrant, I always thought my small aquarium reminded me of Atlantis with the algae covered column and wall. I've had these tanks since before the show started though.

My order from Xoxide will be here tomorrow, Sept 1.

I got my stuff from Xoxide today. That was the best part of my shitty day. I'd post pics but iupload.net is down for exceeding it's bandwidth. I'm going to go work on the mod for a while to try and cheer myself up. I'm trying to get this done ASAP now and hopefully it will be complete in less than two weeks. If someone will give a free place to upload pics I will post some later.

edit: I cut the Alu 90* Bend rod to make the fan shroud. It fits very well over the heatercore but stills needs a little adjusting. I'm going to cut it some more tomorrow so that it isn't blocking any of the airflow from the fans and tape it onto the heatercore.

The black paint on the case is looking very nice. I am going to add another layer tomorrow as well and afterward I may only need to add one final layer before I clearcoat it. I also want to work on a plexi cover to hide the PCI and AGP slots.

The heiroglyphic panels are a very long, boring, and tedius process and I am still working on what I want them to look like adn how exactly to make them. I've narrowed the choices done to either carving it out of floral styrofoam I already have or shaping every single symbol out of plexi and gluing it to the existing panel. Both choices will take a while and can't exceed 3/4" thickness otherwise they won't fit.

Looks like I'm not the only one working on a Stargate Themed case. I googled out of boredom and to see if my project would come up (was 4th link).

Here is someone elses but it doesn't appear as if it is as detailed as mine. I love and already downloaded their boot screen though. My original idea for my Power switch was to make it in the DHD and this guy is doing that which is pretty cool. I'll send him a link to my log once the pics are back up.

http://www.gruntville.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9311 I know there are some [H] members here that are members there as well. If one of them could either give me Rick1805's email or send him the link to my log I'd love to know what he thinks and vice versa.

iupload.net is back up so here are some pics.

My stuff from Xoxide which is $4 PSU (testing purposes only remember), Dual UV CCFL, 2x 120 mm fans, Techflex sleeving kit to redo my current PSU and other wires, 30 black thumb screws (cheaper and easier than painting the stock ones), lots of 18 guage UV reactive wire (forgot length), Bawls, Mints, Jolt Gum, and chocolates from the Caffeine X hour sale.

SG1Supplies08.jpg

I made some measurements for the fan shroud to go over the heatercore. This is based on glcg2000's design (links to his on on one of the first three pages of this log).

Bonneville HC 003.jpg

Cut the main cuts using a hacksaw. This was so fucking easy to cut! It took about 6 strokes to cut, lol! The final cut to remove the piece was made with a stadard dremel disk on almost full (of a 35,000RPM Dremel) with constant pressure. Aluminum dust was everywhere, glad I wore my mask!

Bonneville HC 004.jpg

Repeated the above three more times. Then bent the rod using the edge of my vise and elbow grease. (FYI for the inevitable question, those speaker boxes are from like 5 years ago and I think the old speakers from my previous car are in them.)

Bonneville HC 005.jpg

Here is a test fit of how it is supposed to fit. I know that there are some gaps and I am going to try and fix that tomorrow by straightening out those parts and bending them again. I also have to cut out part of the Alu so that it isn't blocking airflow from the fans. I have Alu tape to seal it with as well. I may even start working on some custom fan grills from them out of plexi.

Bonneville HC 006.jpg

I was thinking of ordering a Pelican Case from here to put the res, heatercore, pump, and switches in. I'd have to modify the hell out of the inside of course. :D
I am begining to realize that this may not be possible because the cost/size ratio is far outside my budget. In order to fit all of this in I would need it to be about 24x10x9 or thereabouts. I don't have the money to spend on something this big nor would it fit on my desk.
I may have to just have the res displayed externally completely without the case and build a small encloure to hide the pump and heatercore and something for all the switches. (May revert back to my original idea and make a DHD for the power switch.) Any suggestions for something to hide the heatercore and pump in that fits the theme?

Update:

I worked on the heatercore fan shroud today.
I first had to try and fix 2 of the bends so that they fit better. Unfortunately, since Alu is so soft, the metal broke in half at the bend and I had to stop trrying to fix it that way. I sort of expected this would happen so it wasn't a big deal. I just cut out some of the excess from one end and it fit much better on the heatercore than before.

I placed both 120mm fans over the shroud the way I wanted them to be positioned. I then removed the screws holding one of the fans in place from its casing. I marked out the inside circles on the shroud with a Sharpie and used some 2000 grit sandpaper to get the Sharpie marks off of the inside of the Alu fan casing.

The difficult part came when I had to cut out parts of the Alu rod. I started with a hacksaw but it is very hard to turn with the curve so I had to bust out the Dremel. I went through a standard 409 disk just to get the first piece removed.

Bonneville HC 007.jpg

I went through several more disks on another part of the shroud before I gave up using the Dremel and tried a different method. I cut a few lines up to my marks with the hacksaw and then used a Monkey Wrench to bend the small peices up until they snapped. This was easier and faster. I also enjoyed not having to hear the Dremel scream as it cut the metal.

Bonneville HC 008.jpg

I finished removing the rest of the pieces and then used the Dremel to sand down the edges. I taped the ends of the shroud together with some of the Alu tape since it was now in two peices following the bending misshap above. I placed it on the heatercore along with the fans for a test fit. Everything good so far.

Bonneville HC 009.jpg

I took a scrap section of plexi from when I cut the panels for the heiroglyphic walls and cut it to fit over the shroud. I used the fan casing to mark the holes again. I then drilled a few pilot holes so that my jigsaw could fit through.

Bonneville HC 010.jpg

I had to go slow and take my time citting this since I would have a high risk of snapping the plexi where it was thin. I only managed to snap it once and it wasn't that big of a deal so I was pleased. You can see where it snapped on the left side.

Bonneville HC 011.jpg

Test fit over the Alu fan shroud and again with the fans on. Now it needs some holes for rivots.

Bonneville HC 012.jpg

Bonneville HC 013.jpg

First I marked where I wanted my holes with a Sharpie. Next I drilled into the plexi followed by placing the plexi on top of the shroud and taping it down so it was secure. Then I just redrilled through the plexi holes into the Alu. Here it is held into place with unrivoted rivots.

Bonneville HC 014.jpg

I figured I'd test out the metalic silver spraypaint I plan on using on the Res by spraying it on some plexi. Here it is without and with flash. It looked pretty good so I painted the plexi portion of the shroud the same way. I removed one side of the protective plastic and painted it. The non painted side will face up so that the silver shows through.

Bonneville HC 015.jpg

Bonneville HC 016.jpg

I still haven't decided what to hide the pump and heatercore in since I can't find a good case to put this in. I am thinking of building a small enclosure for them and decorate it as if it were some sort of alien device like from the Ancients. I think that would be pretty cool. I'll work on it tomorrow and this weekend if I get a chance.

Oh and nice shroud there.

As Thor would say, "It was your stupid idea."

Seriously, thanks for the help a while back when I bugged you about how you made it. I just took your plan and built upon it. I'll tape all of it later with the Alu tape like you did when it's time for it.

These fans are huge. The casings on them are heavy compared to plastic ones. They are constructed great though. I just hope they perform as good as they claim on the box. I really don't want to have to add 2 more on the other side.

I have some of those Aluminum fans, gotta love them. :D
Nice shroud I have to start working on mine.

Update:

Went to Home Depot and Wallmart today for a few more supplies.

I baught some more Alu 90* bend rod, some washers, 1/8" nuts and 3" long screws, 2 more PVC endcaps, some Orange spray paint, and 2 more cans of clearcoat. The 2 extra endcaps will be cut for the Res. They will go over the pipe to give it more detail. It's kinda hard to explain but it will make sense when you see it eventually.

SG1Supplies09.jpg

I started working on my shroud but the battery in my drill died so I used the time waiting for it to recharge to add the final layer of black spraypaint to the case. Here is a progress pic prior to the final layer.

SGCase033.jpg

Once the drill battery was restored I began drilling holes for the screws to hol the fans to the shroud. I'm not going to do as some people do and extend the screws all the way through the heatercore fins (I'm talking about you gclg2000! :p ). I don't want to risk it even if I do have a lifetime warranty on the heatercore. I think my way looks cleaner anyways.

Bonneville HC 017.jpg

Pic after all the holes are drilled and test fit the screws.

Bonneville HC 018.jpg

Here's what the disassembled shroud looks like since it broke yesterday. You can see the type of gap on the bottom right that I was trying to fix when it broke. Again, not a big deal since I can just put Alu tape over it.

Bonneville HC 019.jpg

See, Alu tape fixed her right up.

Bonneville HC 020.jpg

Bonneville HC 021.jpg

I had never used a rivot gun so I was anxious to try out my new toy. I only wasted 2 rivots learning how to use it and it was pretty easy to use. That piece of plexi on the bottom left broke off when I was widening that hole (had accidently used a smaller bit on that one). Not a big deal and the rivot is holding it in place but it's not like it's vital to structural integrity or anything.

Bonneville HC 022.jpg

Bonneville HC 023.jpg

I went ahead and used some Alu tape around the edges of the shroud so that air isn't wasted by blowing through the tiny cracks between the plexi and Alu.

Bonneville HC 024.jpg

Final shot of the shroud mounted on the heatercore.

Bonneville HC 026.jpg

I baught the spraypaint and Alu rods for the construction of the custom pump and heatercore housing. My plan is to make it appear as if it is some sort of unknown device left behind by the Ancients. The Ancients appearantly love to make all their stuff glow orange so I will paint one side of all the plexi pieces orange. Here is a test spray. This shot is horrible due to the lighting so don't judge the final project by this. I am thinking of having a white CCFL or a few white LED's inside the box to make the plexi glow.

Ancient Box 001.jpg

I got the idea for how to make the box from a member here on [H]. His name was Fush something. His was a box to hold his vaperchiller IIRC. I lost the link to his project from about 6-9 months ago (lost in the great March upgrade) but I had saved a few of his pics cause I knew that I may need to reference them later on. I was right. Here are some pics of his box I am using for reference.

I didn't realize. Thanks. I too am a spelling and grammar nazi. Most of the time when I edit a post, it is because I spelled a word wrong or often because half of my "and"s" turn out to be "adn" or "nad" and the perfectionist in me has to fix it. I need to start previewing my posts before I submit them.

The pics are working fine now. iupload.net must be having bandwidth issues as I stated two days ago. In the 18 months or so I've used iupload, I have never seen them have an issue with bandwidth though. If the pics don't work, you probably just need to wait and come back to view them. Sorry.

Seems to be the case. What's weird is some work and others don't.

Update:

I've been unable to continue working on the case cause it has been raining the past few days. All I have left to do is clearcoat.

I used that POS $5 PSU to test out the UV CCFL and to figure out which way the air blows on the 120mm fans. Here is the UV wire and CCFL I got from Xoxide. It's the same brand CCFL as the blue one in my current case so I know they are good quality.

SG1 Electrical 001.jpg

Here is the fan. The first pic is with the flash on so it makes it look like the fan isn't moving but it is. You can see where I stuck a cut off paperclip into the ATX connector so that I could power on the PSU. (See the Case Mod FAQ for details) These fans are pretty quiet for the amount of air they push/pull. (BTW, Mine will be mounted to pull air through the heatercore.)

SG1 Electrical 002.jpg

SG1 Electrical 003.jpg

I painted the inverter for the CCFL black when it stopped raining for a few minutes. It should be easier to hide now and not stick out so much since it was blue.

Ancient Box 009.jpg

I started work on the Ancient box but soon realized I needed one more pice of Alu bend rod so I went to HD to get one. Picked up some handles for the top and some sticky feet to stick to the bottoms of the legs.

SG1Supplies010.jpg

I measured the Alu rods and cut them to make a rectangular box. The dimensions are going to be 16"x8"x8" (LxWxH) plus 3" for the legs that will give the box some clearance so that the heatercore can draw air from underneath.
The heatercore is approx. 12" long and the extra room should be plenty to place a pump. I haven't decided on whether to get the Eheim 1250 or Via 1300 but the box should fit either.

Ancient Box 002.jpg

The legs are made out of the square Alu rod and I cut for pieces that are 6" long. 3" will hold the case up. The other 3" will be attached to the vertical supports. (I sound like Gearoge Costanza...."I always wanted to be an architect!"....LOL)

Ancient Box 003.jpg

Here I removed some of the base so that the legs could stick through. This was the first corner cut and it is a little bit bigger than the others but I'll fix it later.

Ancient Box 004.jpg

The legs after being cut and filed down along the edges.

Ancient Box 005.jpg

Mockup pic of the legs positioned. Remember that 3" will be below the box.

Ancient Box 006.jpg

Here is the top portion of the box after I cut all the pieces. I had to measure where to drill holes for all the rivets adn then stick them into the box to hold it together temporarily to make sure it works.

Ancient Box 007.jpg

Here is the top placed over the bottom poertion and the legs.

Ancient Box 008.jpg

Tomorrow I'm going to try to finish the frame of the box and maybe start to prime it for paint. I need to paint the rivets before I use them so that I wont have some silver spots showing on the black frame. Once that is complete, I'll start to work on the plexi pieces and a way to have at least one piece removable so that I can mess with the inside. I have a few ideas on how to do this already.

Looking good.
I was having a similar problem on choosing a pump but I've decided to go with the 1300 (performance is good and it's cheap since I'll be needing two) but I've had a hellova a time finding one. I've seen the 2600 model at Walmart (LOL) for $30-40 but never the 1300, I'll have to get it online.

What brand are those CCFL's? I need to get some and those look really nice.

The CCFL's are Logisys. They came from Xoxide and were only $7 IIRC. My Blue Logisys ones came from FrozenCPU a year ago.

I'm leaning towards the Via 1300 or maybe the next step up since they are excellant pumps with a smaller price.

CrimandEvil said:
I can post some links for the 1300 then.

Dtek has it for $23 but post some more links if you can, especially if they have the other Via pumps in the next higher series. I'll look around later on tonight. I'm about to go work on getting as much of the heatercore box done today and start clearcoating the case.

I really like how this mod is progressing I'm looking foward to seeing more.

Thanks. Check back later tonight for another update. It will probably be the last one for about a week since my GF and I are going to the beach (Ocean Isle, NC...near Wilmington) tomorrow till next Wed.

Thanks for the links CrimandEvil but I'm probably going to go with Dtek.

Update:

The first thing I did on the project today was to paint some rivets black. I drilled some holes into a block of wood, put the rivets in, and painted. Later on tonight (approx 6 hrs later) I clearcoated them. After they dried I flipped them upside down and applied a coat of paint to the other side. Here are some pics from the first time I painted them.

Ancient Box Black Rivets.jpg

I attached the legs to the box. This took a lot of careful measurement and at times was a bitch to do. Here is the first leg...

Ancient Box 010.jpg

and the second...

Ancient Box 011.jpg

and the third. The tape was to hold them tighter and in case one of the rivets fell out. I was careful to wear my safety glasses since I was constantly bending down and the thought of loosing an eye due to a rivet was not pleasant. You can see a scrap piece of Alu rod between the leg and the frame. That is to fill in the space between the two so that the legs don't wobble. I will cut and rivet them later.

Ancient Box 012.jpg

The last leg was an absolute bitch to get in. First it wouldn't even go in so I had to trim down part of the cuts on the frame I made earlier. Then the frame was more like a rhombus on one end than a rectangle. I had to trim off some of the edge. I made the mistake yesterday of drilling the rivet holes in both the botttom of the frame and the vertical support braces. Since the vertical pieces need to look the same and are on the outside, I had to redrill all the holes for the bottom of the frame. Most of the holes were about 1-2cm apart from the old ones except for two which were over the old ones. I spent at least an hour getting it fixed and was finally able to get the leg on correctly.

Ancient Box 013.jpg

I put the handles I baught yesterday on top for looks. I cut two strips of 1" Alu rod so that the heatercore can sit on the box. I didn't really realize how big this thing was till I sat it in the box. I just hope I can get all of this onto my desk. If not, I'll either buy a new desk eventually or build one! :D

Ancient Box 014.jpg

I took a scrap piece of plexi and cut it so that it would lay in the bottom of the box to hold the pump. This was just for a test fit and I will use a piece that more tightly fits the area later on. Notice the unfinished Res in the background and the size difference.

Ancient Box 015.jpg

I got tired of messing with the box so I clearcoated the CCFL inverter. Then I sprayed the first layer of clearcoat on the case. I didn't take pics since there wasn't much of a difference. I think this is because the paint is black so it doesn't look glossy like the gold and I'm using a different primer than I used for the other stuff (Wallmart was out, had to get Krylon) I'll add another layer when I get back from the beach.

Thanks. Leaving in just a few minutes. Just thought I'd check to see if there were any new comments and some of the other projects. Hopefully I won't spend all my money and will be able to buy my pump and blocks when I get back.

im not sure if this has been asked or u sayed it. but what are u going to cover the box with? plexi?

you have to make me a box for me when i go with water :p

The box will be covered in plexi. I just returned from the beach (went to Carolina Beach near Wilmington, NC) and plan to spend a lot of tomorrow working on the project. Depending on how much money I have left in my account, I will order the WC parts.

It would be very cool if you made an actual gate and made it spin. That said, the "cheap" way to do it would just be with blue LEDs and at Atlantis gate.

I will give you my first born child for this case.

As I have said before, I do want to make the gate on the side panel spin. The side panel will be the very last thing I work on though. I want to have everything else finished and running so that I can work on the Stargate without having to mess with the rest of the case and my PC.
If I can, I will make the motherboard side panel Atlantis themed with it's own Stargate (w/ blue LED's) as well.

As far as your first born child goes, I have no intention of ever having kids since they would require all my money which I would rather spend on PC stuff and mods. :D Thanks anyway but this case will not be for sale.

The cable modem on my mom's PC (the PC I use for all my internet use including updates lately) is fucked up again. It could be AOhelL though and tech support people have been unable to help. I finally put my PCI modem in my PC just so I could get online and post some updates.

I worked on the box some more last week but I can't post pics cause of dial-up. I just ordered the follwing:

from dtekcustoms:
whitewater CPU waterblock
12ft of 1/2" ID clearflex
Via 1300 water pump

SVC:

Swiftech MCW50 GPU waterblock
Koolance Alu Ramsinks
some more black sleeving

I had to resubmit my order from elwirecheap.com since it appearantly never got sent/submitted.

I'll try to get the cable modem working so that I can post pics. In the meantime, I'll continue working and taking pics so that eventually I can post a major update.

Heres a mod for the ViaAqua pump: http://www.wc101.com/guides/ViaAqua/

Thanks, I may do that. It's pretty easy to do. I did the same thing to the impeller on my fish tank pump since it was anoying my. The reason it isn't glued down is to allow debris that might clog the impeller to pass through. Since only water will be in a watercooling setup, there is no reason for the part to not be glued.

BTW, I am still on dial up but I went ahead and uploaded the pics. I'll type up the log for them in a few minutes and update in the next two hours (I'm watching The Apprentice so it may take a while!).
