this thread made me laugh, cant believe you guys are sticking paper and cardboard in your machines. its nasty esd stuff. just as bad as using tape inside the machine. suprised nothing is fried on a few of these systems.

the duct taped fan was nuts. lol

Howdy everyone,

Had this over on the "How to say GOODBYE to whiny NB fans! " http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1028973010#post1028973010

It was suggested that I place it here...if u don't do 3d stuff, it might work for ya.

I'm preparing to post pics of my twin Lian Li's in the Gallery section next week but here's something that's kinda GM. One of my priorities of the project was to reduce noise & the first things to go were the vid card & chipset fans.

Although I used a vid card, u should be able to apply the technique to a chipset heat sink.

I've saved all of the heat sinks from my discarded PSUs & used one of them for this mod.

This PSU HS fit w/ no cutting at all. It was the exact width as the chipset HS. The card is a Matrox Parhelia.
DSC01077.jpg

It's held in just w/ pressure. I bent the top downward to catch air being blow in it's direction.

This doesn't make much sense probably, but when I post the whole project ur'll see how it fits in w/ the air flow.

Cheers
Peter

Haha this thread is halarious. I after goin all through it seems like the cardboard box cases are common . I think my favorite is the USB hub w/paper clips and staples LOL and the printout side window....funny thread guys

Meh, who the hell needs a case anyway? :p

Notice the fan unit from a stock P4 HSF propped up against the RAM and blowing on the CPU HSF(the fan is too whiny). Another thing to note is that the motherboard is sitting on top of a piece of cardboard cut out from a cereal box. The PCI brackets you see lying around are from the video and LAN cards, and are used to turn the system on since I didn't have a spare power switch and I'm too lazy to go scrounge one up from an old case.

I've got a few other ghetto mods as well. I glued a fan onto my passive NB heatsink with white glue, and I made a fan shroud for my passive 9600 cooler out of cardboard from a box of granola bars. Ghetto modding is fun!

Not really.

Dude, paper was used as isolator in powercables before, on high voltage stuff.

Not sure how any of these will rank up, but I have a few decent duct tape mods in my room.

lamp.jpg

^Needed a lamp that wouldn't wake up my roommate, and this worked. And it's also right over where my comp is, which helps when I'm working.

inside.jpg

^hard to see (wish I had better pics), but almost every fan (except for the 2 on the swingy door) are held on by twisty ties. Big red and white ones :p

games.jpg

There's 2 here...the ducttape xbox shelf, and the taped up component selector...and I guess you could also call the wooden shelves a mod, cause I made that too....

Didnt want to pay the 30 bucks for a 775 adapter for this old exos for an HTPC so I "ghetto" modded it with a 775 zalman hs/f bracket.

Heh, I was doing some soldering the other freezing day with my window open. Case got down to 16c and CPU down to 24c. it was FREEZING in my room!

lolz. it didn't get all to cold the first 2 nights.. that 3rd morning though... was freakin cold. :p

This really isnt a case mod per say, but I found this at a job I was at and thought it to be..interesting:
switch.jpg

As you can see the knob broke off and instead of buying a new switch box, they improvised.

I haven't thought that far through, yet. Perhaps I can use an oven to melt the mass amounts of hot-glue and retrieve the laser?

haha.... i dont know how ghetto this is, but we all love duct tape, so i thought i would share anyways :p

this was a couple years back when i used to buy a case of duct tape at home depot every few weeks, haha

That actually looks pretty cool.
and I bet it doesn't slip out of your hands if you hold it with your palms flat against the sides!

my meassurement method wasn't that accurate i believed it to be :(
anyway looks more crapy in real life than on the pics, in it looks already crappy in the pix.
sry 56k er's for the long post.
Hilarious! Upon first glance of the final product, nothing honestly struck me as out of place...

How bout this one? I ghetto modded my slot blower to face the inside of my computer!

And it actually worked! Brought my 6800 temps down about 2 degrees :p

I put a black light in the case of my emachine. Yea. Really sad. My old case was dropped and destroyed so i salvaged and got al i could afford. I hate the world

ok, so its been like this for a while.... i am working ona new home for all this stuff (see worklog for project: transfusion) it all works great and get super low temps.... just looks like garbage. thought you guys might get a kick out of it though.

Make the board a matx, and minimize the WC and i could fit it in a qpack :p
ok i am going to ignore the fact that you want to swap the Fatal1ty for a micro board for the moment. i am also going to try to ignore the 'minimize the WC' comment (i tun dual loops for a reason and would never go back from my heatercore)
if you think you can fit 3 hdd's, a dvdrw, a dvdplayer, 2 sound cards, a tv tuner, a 7800gt (soon to be 2), AND a 3" LCD screen in a Qpack you are smoking some seriously strong crack and need to lay off for a bit (you're going to die) :D

For the record, you never mentioned a secondary dvd player, 2x 7800's.. 2 sound cards or a tv tuner... with what you have in your sig, you could fit it in there, for the record :D You are just not thinking Ghetto enough ;)

Not really too ghetto,but

I got this enw zalman 9500,and it wasn't cooling too well : / ,after messing around inside the case I saw that the case does not really provide the right kinda airflow for the hsf wo work right....soooo after looking around for the best 80mm I had for the job i came up with this

im0020943wz.jpg

temps are ~30-32 idle (room temp is like 80f atm) I may replace the fan later with a better one but for now I tihnk this works well.

just for kicks,

discuss,please share thoughts :)

I love the idea. I'd do it too, but my case only has a single 3.5" :(

What case is that? It looks sorta like a PC6070, but is it

Nice!

I moved from the Ninja/1200RPM fan to the Zalman 9500 and the cooling's identical within given noise ranges. The nice thing about the Zalman...it looks INFINITELY cooler than the Ninja. Not to mention cooler temps on the PWM's. It's worth noting I've got dual 120 exhausts catering to the 9500's every need. :p
