PC Alan Wake coming soon?

I heard the cut scenes are low quality and blurry! :p
They were likely re-used from the 360 version. I think there was a thread on the AW forum about that and it was a locked thread so they probably didn't care for people badgering them about their choice of cut-scenes.

Uuuummm.......yeah I was trying to make teh funny out of our own dead thread. Guess I failed. :(

No you didn't. ;)

I bought this for $10 out of pocket thanks to Steam kicking me some money from some mixup a little while back.

^^ This could be very useful. Right now I'm having the game crash on me every so often. Did verify file integrity. Like what I see in the early goings.

EDIT: Worth noting: Menu defaults especially on camera and FOV = Xbox 360 so I maxed all of those out.

Looks better but not ideal. It'll work, though. The game doesn't like alt-tabbing. I have mouse sensitivities maxed, too.

Cutscenes are meh, but I've seen worse. The game itself looks really good with the eye candy maxed out. No one is going to confuse this thing maxed out for a console title.

Audio quality is strangely inconsistent. At times, during cutscenes especially, it sounds very compressed and muffled for lack of a better term. All of my settings are as they should be.

It appears that Steam Cloud is mandatory for game saves no ifs, ands, or buts, or other options. Someone let me know if I'm wrong on that please.

Save system is strictly auto checkpoints. No manual saves of any kind.

thinking of getting this, i'm interested in hearing opinions on gameplay. i dig the setting and atmosphere from what i've seen.

You do get to use guns and such but this game isn't about hitting the great headshots although I'm trying when I'm in that situation. The flashlight beam tells you exactly where your shot is going. Could stand to be a little tighter and more refined. "Kind of" reminds me of Resident Evil 5 in terms of overall feel for a third person game of this nature.

KBM and feel good as does the controller. You can remap keys for KBM.

Oh yes you can.

Steam launcher codes:

http://forum.alanwake.com/showthread.php?t=7759

-w screen width (e.g. -w1280)
-h screen height (e.g. -h720)
-window force windowed
-novsync disables v-sync
-showfps shows a frame rate counter on screen
-forcesurround forces 5.1 speaker mode
-forcestereo forces stereo (2 channel) speaker mode
-nosound disables sound
-cleancloud deletes your save games and settings for Alan Wake from Steam Cloud
-noblur disables the in-game vector blur
-locale=xx forces a selected locale. This should not be needed as you can change it from the Game Properties in Steam. Note that you have to have the locale files downloaded from Steam and that happens only when you choose the language you want to play in from Steam.

You are a god send.

I know.

;)

BTW, I mentioned it earlier but I have a new bad habit: Trying FXAA Injector on just about every game for grins and I'll be damned if it doesn't make this thing look even better.

Well, discrete 7.1 surround seems to work 100% properly in this game. I'm one of three people in the world that cares about this but they did it right; I even get bass in the subwoofer without having to force bass redirection.

Storytelling being one thing...what do you mean by "broken gameplay?"

My all-points-bulletin on how much of a failure Alan Wake is.

- repetitive, bland gameplay that does not evolve, develop or improve
- terrible combat system with an extremely picky and unreliable "dodge" mechanic, and provides challenge by forcing you into tiny boxes with invisible walls and bad camera angles so dodging enemies becomes harder.
- game strips you of all your weapons and items at the end of every "chapter", giving no sense of progression or achievement, and no incentive to save ammo

- Alan Wake has the fitness level of a morbidly obese 50-year-old, and when you really need him to run (like during a chase from the police), he insists on doubling over with an attack of emphysema every three steps. Yes, I know he is a writer and not a marathon runner, but in the instances when adrenaline should be making him run faster and for longer than normal, his fitness level drops to zero and well below what he can do when strolling around looking for switches and keys when not in danger.
- haphazard story-telling with tedious narrative repetition and a weak resolution

- the only thing "psychological" about "psychological action thriller" is having Wake tell you over and over again how he is going crazy, or another character saying Wake is crazy
- extreme levels of Twin Peaks and Stephen King wank, with constant King references/name drops, and cinematic sweeping shots of pine trees over and over again
- zero replay value

The distorted voice effects of the enemies was literally the only thing I enjoyed about the entire game.

Hmmm...well, I'm early into it but thanks for the warning. I'll take all that under advisement and if things go foul you'll see me match notes with you before too long. In the early goings here I see promise.

Sure love getting a "game currently unavailable" message from Steam on a product I paid for.

EDIT: Now Steam won't connect at all. That's awesome. Love this shit. So glad this is the way gaming is going.

Gotta agree with this assessment, thanks for saving me the time of writing this up.

Welcome to online DRM :p

I beat this on the 360 before my 360 died. So I wanted to play the DLC. So glad it came to PC. Gonna play the whole thing again cause I enjoyed the SP alot. I always laugh at people who say the game has no replay value. That statement is 100% user opinion.

i bit on the GMG deal. game looks fun. i have monday off and i plan to lounge and play this.

I'm starting to see some of this.

Graphics look great for the most part... there are a few low res textures here and there. The performance is fine at max settings i get 40-65fps average (1920x1080 8xAA 16xAF ect.). My biggest complaint though is the low res xbox cutscenes they look so much worse compared to the game itself.
Game definitely has that remedy feel and the little throwbacks to max payne make me squeal with joy.

Having an excellent times. Experience is leaps and bounds greater than it was on the 360. The game actually looks pretty good, Remedy did an excellent job.

It's running pretty well 6024x1080 eveyrthing max'd w/ a 6970. Beautiful game for eyefinity really helps the experience.

I'm not liking it,

I regret spending 30$ on this one, honestly. I should have read more than the 90% IGN review.

It wasn't really their decision. Microsoft picked up the publishing rights to the game, and decided it was going to be Xbox exclusive. They needed money to make the game, and without MS picking it up, you may not have gotten the opportunity to play it at all. As far as console ports go, it appears as though they did a pretty good job trying to make it a proper PC title.

Is it really such a tragedy that a console got a game before the PC did?

It's amazing that the same people behind Max Payne 1 and 2,games with fun gameplay, came up with this. There's a lot to like here but some of the gameplay really is frustrating and needlessly cumbersome IMO.

I recommend people wait for the half off sales and such.

It's 6:40AM. I played through the entire game (minus DLC) in one sitting.

Holy fuck this game is good. Much better than I thought.

"Flashlight as cursor" works incredibly well, and it's very fun to utilize.

I've heard about repetitive combat, and it IS repetitive. HOWEVER I have yet to get tired or bored from combat. This is from my complete playthrough. Combat never got boring or tiresome for me, ever. Flashlight+pew pew is great fun.

I think it could have used more guns. And I was expecting to get some sort of a BFG9000 floodlight flashlight, but that never happened.

Game is quite long. I expected this game to be maybe 6-7 hours, I finished it in about 12 hours or so.

Driving portions are actually fun.

Bad things I need to mention:

The plot/story I didn't care too much about. It seemed sloppy to me, and I was mostly confused as shit at the end. I can't even summarize the entire plot, I was so lost during the last half.

It doesn't reward exploring as much. There are big non-linear forests that you can explore that's out of the main road, but 99% of the time, it'll be a wasted exploration. How about some items, etc laid on deep in some of the forests?

Remedy, please take note. Alan Wake is a survival/horror type of a game, right? And many, if not most of us gamers enjoy collecting loot such as ammo, grenades, flares etc. to use them at a later time. They're somewhat scarce, and hoarding items is fitting for a game of this genre. So why the hell would you take away all of our saved up items at the beginning of a new chapter? This is like punishing good behavior. "Whew, I just spent the last hour saving up these flare ammo for the tough battles! Oh wait, the battle I just finished was the last one? I GUESS I SAVED UP THESE ITEMS FOR NOTHING LOL"

Replayability is terrible.

Having said all that, excellent game for the value. I paid $23 for the Collector's.

Thanks to a Steam screw up in my favor I got mine even cheaper than that and I'm grateful for that.

This is why I am infinitely glad that Remedy isn't developing Max Payne 3.

You are only as good as your last game.

I can see that argument.

I do find that I have little confidence in Max Payne 3 going into it, though.

Just bought it but I'll be finishing dead space 2 before loading it up. Looking forward to maxing everything graphically and running smooth. That's one of the good things about playing an older title.

Hater's be hatin'.

Awesome counterargument. Contributes a hell of a lot to the conversation.

Some might say: Trolls be threadshittin'.

The game's actually grown on me. I came at it fresh yesterday and things "took" for me better.

There's no question the gameplay style could stand for a boost in refinement and intuitiveness, though.

I don't see how even the big fans of this game could deny that with a straight face. "Haters can hate" my ass. C'mon. Get real.

Production values and overall atmosphere are absolutely top notch on this PC version. It's different. Overall I like the game. :)

Oh wtf, please don't tell me GMG ran out of Alan Wake game keys. I wish there was a warning that it was going to be a "while supplies last" type of deal .

Just finished the game. It took me about 14 hours with all the DLC. I loved it, and the two additional episodes helped close this part of the story up.

Looking forward to "Season 2".

The lighting Alan wake is nothing short of amazing. best I've ever seen in a game.
