Official Crysis 2 Thread

Some of you guys just need to play this and stop looking up close at every brick and stone you walk across. This game is way more than the sum of its parts. It's just a fantastic sci-fi computer game. All this talk of textures is kind of missing the point.

Okay, if you're looking for some kind of benchmark to run so you can test your super awesome hardware setup... most of us just want to... you know... play a game.

I think it's fun.
don't worry I will pick it up later when its cheaper and probably enjoy it. still though you know graphics are always going to be huge part of the discussion when it comes to any Crysis game.

Amen brother, amen! I've seen 10,000 screen shots of Crysis 2 with the tag line "the graphics suck." So now PC gaming is about doing a frame by frame analysis of image quality and textures? And we wonder why developers aren't developing exclusive content and features much for PCs these days.

Like Wabe said, I think the game is simply fun and on the PC it still delivers an experience well beyond consoles.

The game on its own merits is good - but if it were named anything other than Crysis 2 I'm sure more people wouldn't be so up in arms about all of the faults found within it. That, and the developer promised much more than was delivered. Who can even say if a dx11 patch or an SDK will even be apart of the deal now.

Agreed. But overall Crysis 2 is a fantastic looking game, I certainly haven't seen anything better including Crysis 1. No Crysis 2 isn't the technical hallmark that Crysis 1 was and while Crytek wasn't honest about how this was going to look on the PC assuming there is no DX 11 patch which I tend to doubt we'll see one, the writing was on the wall. Crytek's constant complaining about piracy and low sales of Crysis 1 and the decision to make Crysis 2 multi-platform was all I needed to know that hardcore PC gamers weren't going to be happy.

i already beat the entire game and it definitely is the better looking game. the ending has so much shit going on it's comical, the first game could never hope to accomplish such a shit storm. 50 lights flying all over the place, lasers, explosions, spooky super alien fortress sci-fi shit going off half a mile in the distance.

i have a feeling that most people bitching haven't finished the entire thing because some parts are ridiculous. there's a firefight in the dark where gunshots are going off all over and sparks and ricochets are lighting stuff up, there's a clusterfuck of a fight on a bridge, mortar bombardments in the dark that send lights and shadows flying all over.

the amount of action is off the charts and on the same hardware, it's probably twice the framerate.

for fun i just ran through the entire first level of Crysis 1. literally a fresh install of the game, no mods, no custom content at all, no tweaks.

straight dx10, everything very high. as awesome as you remember?
http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/10565193/1/crysis1?h=6d5772

the water / snow was just about the prettiest part. textures are hardly the miracle work people make them out to be.

the performance difference is massive, crysis 2 is unequaled in its looks / performance ratio. crysis 2 framerate was easily double what i get in crysis 1, and yes i'd say it looks better, especially in motion where there are 50 lights flying around, shit exploding, and a comical amount of chaos that the first game could never hope to achieve.

And here's a few shots I just took using dx9 with a few autoexec.cfg tweaks. So yes, it does look as good if not better than I remember.

When the Nanosuit got angry and said "Get back into the fight"..... I chuckled...then laughed, what a shame.

The game is good, but it could have been so much better. Crytek went with the winning formula, that's why so many of you like it.
A game that is easy to access and overall entertaining. This what Crytek was focused on when making the game:

Crytek's PC Compromise:

In the third paragraph, he speaks in the third person, but you get the idea.

Forget about DX10/11, Sandbox, etc., those things were a distraction in the design process. Now they're free to work on them, if they are working on it at all. There are probably finishing the first round of DLC instead.

I'm hoping they release good single player DLC. I'm sick of multiplayer map pack shit.

The aliens crashed on Earth sometime before Crysis 1 and somehow or another the Koreans released them or something like that. It was never well explained. The biohazard was released by CELL, at least that is the implication that I get from the opening. I assume the military crumbled with the virus, the aliens, and CELL against them.

A lot of what happens (or has happened) is explained towards the end of the game.
The whole thing basically begins with the Tunguska Event in the early 1900s. This somewhat implies that the Ceph arrived (or crashed landed) on Earth periodically and were eventually buried. Hargreave is the first on the scene at Tunguska and finds the Ceph nanotechnology which he begins to analyse. He forms Crynet and the research into the nanotechnology culminates in the first nanosuits. Hargreave recruits Prophet to use the nanosuits and, under the guise of a covert military operation at the Lingshan Islands (Crysis 1/WH), bring back samples of the Ceph tech. If he is unable to do that, he was ordered to come back alive and report what he had seen. From what I gather, everything that Prophet finds allows Hargreave to create the Nanosuit 2.

In one of Prophet's flashbacks where he is conversing with Hargreave, it becomes clear that the nanosuits are symbiotic (even implying the ones in the first game were also). The suits basically become part of the user, keeping them alive no matter how much bodily damage is sustained. At the beginning of the game, Prophet claims that he's used up and gives the mortally wounded Alcatraz the suit to keep him alive. At the beginning of the game, I had no idea what Prophet meant by "used up", but the symbiotic relationship between the suit and user makes it more clear.

Anyway, back to the NS2. It apparently was made with the ability to integrate the Ceph nanotechnology into its own systems. This first happens when you pick up the first Nano Catalyst from the first Ceph you kill. The suit begins to analyse and integrate the nano material and it actually takes the whole game for it to finish.

CELL is the military arm (and a PMC) of Crynet. They were ordered by the US government to contain the situation in New York, and were under orders from Hargreave to retrieve the Nanosuit 2. Lockhart was the CELL commander who is constantly trying to kill Prophet/Alcatraz. Tara Strickland is part of CELL and working for Hargreave also, but you find out later that she is an undercover agent working for the CIA to find out what Hargreave was up to. They used the cover story of her cracking after her father's death at Lingshan to place her at CELL. She is actually the one who calls in Force Recon (and you) at the beginning of the game to help extract Prophet and Gould. Gould was Prophet's logistical support at Crynet before Prophet went rogue (and Gould along with him). CELL's failure to contain the situation eventually causes the US government to bomb the water barriers and flood the lower part of the city. Then the Marines are sent in to clean up the mess.

Hargreave has pretty much known about the invasion all along. IIRC, one of the things Prophet finds from the Ceph is a map showing the locations of all the Ceph hives. This is the main reason for him setting up Crynet headquarters in NYC. The Ceph (not CELL) use the spore towers to spread disease and death among the human population. Hargreave built the NS2 so that when it finished integrating the Ceph nanotechnology, it could reverse the spores to be lethal to the Ceph. The main reason Hargreave wanted the suit back was so that he could use it himself to defeat the Ceph since he was the most knowledgeable about them. He even froze himself to wait for the Ceph invasion. Since Prophet went rogue and then handed off the suit to Alcatraz, all of Hargreave's plans to use the suit himself went out the window.

Sorry for the long read, but I hope this explains some of the things. A lot is explained through Prophet's flashbacks and what characters say to you.

you obviously have not gone far into the 2nd game, most levels are enormous.

I'm on 15/19 (assuming that means chapters - almost done). While the environments open up at times, it's still not as grand and interactive as Crysis. My whole sour attitude to this game stems from the broken promises of Crytek, low res textures, and removal of any kind of graphics tweaking/dx11/SDK available. The game is a solid experience for sure -- I just would have liked it more had it not been for my expectations and knowing the roots it comes from.

This is very good news indeed. As an aside I've really been digging into this game this weekend and I have to say I've been having a blast. The sp is fun albeit with some bugs but a good time overall. The MP as we all know is frustrating to get into a server but when I do find a good server it's been alot of fun. I'm level 14 and still having a good time. The DX 11 patch enchancements will just add to already good buy as far as I'm concerned. I like the game overall even with the imperfections. ;)

I have been enjoying the game (when it works) but I shouldn't have to jump through 50 hoops just to get it to work on my system without giving me a seizure.

Wasn't consolifying a game suppose to make it "put the disc in and play"? (Please note the sarcasm)

What problems are you having?

Insane flickering when using Crossfire. Forcing the bioshock profile does help, but doesn't completely remove it. Can't rename the exe because I have it on STEAM

I can some times get it to go away by launching the game, doing ALT+ENTER to force windowed and then ALT+ENTER again to go back to full screen.

Does disabling Crossfire help? It might be a CFX bug that AMD will have to fix with a profile update.

Edit: Took a couple minutes and it looks like its a widespread problem. CFX simply doesn't work well with Crysis 2 right now.

i really miss picking up and throwing those guys around, now he barely throws em and they die from the slightest bump, and picking one up and using as a shield while i shot people i really miss that

its like crysis but missing all the little things i liked about crysis and the new stuff is not really that innovative, select grenades? what happened to just press the button for nades?

Looking forward to the DX11 patch, lets hope Crytek gets this right because they really dropped the ball for not including it in the first place.

They need to add two things in that patch to address most of the complaints about the graphics of the game. First would be some terrain tessellation(a modest amount like 8x would work wonders and not kill performance more most DX11 capable GPUs) and a high-resolution texture pack.

Agreed with you and Wabe.

Sure, the game has some flaws. They all do. Sure, there's some things that Crysis 1 set the bar on that this thing needed to come up to more and we all get that but overall, this thing's a blast on its own merits and yes, I definitely think Hollywood should hang it's head in shame when a number of videogames, including this one, come out and hand them their ass. This game is better than any number of action movies I've seen in at least recent times.

Someone else made the point and I'll agree: Take the name "Crysis" out of the game's title and it's a night and day different story in threads like these here and abroad in terms of reception and ratio of praise vs. complaints.

IMO the most glaring omission apart from the low res textures would be parallax mapping.

I'm not holding my breath for a big DX11 update (the game is freaking spectacular already), but I'd like to see that, along with the expected tessellation, and hopefully a small performance improvement that DX11 should inherently bring. I also remember seeing some cool things in the Cryengine tech demo videos like realtime deformation (i.e. cars, doors, barrells being crushed and dented realistically), but I think that's unlikely.

Being DX9 only is not that big of a deal - there was very little difference between Crysis in DX9 and DX10

Well according to this article DX11 is all but a done deal, at any rate this could leave a lot of PC gamers with egg on their face and if nVidia helped finance this I have a feeling this might have even been their call to give them time to work on drivers.

At any rate enough with the Crytek bashing for now. If we want a DX 11 patch there's no point in harassing the people who are actually delivering it as that's got to be discouraging as hell to them especially since it looks to be imminent.

Just finished crysis... and I hated every second of it.

New York again? there are other cities on the planet FFS.

another limited scope console shooter... because there just are not enough.

Story sucked pretty hard. Where is nomad? or even psycho at least? Why do I play random guy X in Prophets suit in which he adds nothing to the game at all. no character, he is just there, besides the obvious plot holes like is he within about 5% of Prophets height and weight how would he fit?

This is just a money grab, and added nothing to the original 2 games. And the crytek 3 engine seems more dated then the crytek 2 engine. I ran everything maxxed at 1920x1200 on the 4870 1gb. this card got crushed by crysis warhead, and i was running medium settings at 1680x1050 and crysis 1 still looked better.

Im tired of games becoming shitty because of shitty consoles.

CRYTEK do you hear us? you fuckers set back gaming 5 years!

Funny, I'm running 2048x1152 on my SLI GTX 560's and have absolutely no issues whatsoever. I just went into options and turned the res to native and detail to hardcore. Off I went!

For those of you having xfire problems try renaming the executable to FEAR.EXE It solved my xfire issues.
