NVIDIA Announces Project Shield

I think this would be cool for people like me that have Kids.. Then you don't have to build more then 1 rig they can share it. My son is only 3 and always want to play racing games on my pc with my 360 controller. He already has his own nexus 7 lol that he play racing games on. But this way he could play whatever he wanted and stay out of my office :)...

Better yet, who wants to play with a gamepad, period?

This. Is. Doomed.

Seriously who is the demographic for this product? From the onset you NEED a gaming desktop with rather good specs, PC enthusiasts have such PC's PC enthusiasts empirically, overwhelmingly, tend to prefer KB/Mouse to gamepad. So it takes an enthusiast level PC to run a device that is marketed to casuals?

BRILLIANT!!!!!

There are a ton of PC games that play better with a controller. I sure as hell wouldn't use this thing to play a round of BF3, but that doesn't make it useless. Almost any single-player third person game I play I will gravitate to a controller (Assassins Creed, Darksiders, and Just Cause 2 come to mind as games I've recently played and overwhelmingly preferred a gamepad). Also, lots of indie platformers... Rayman, Meatboy, Limbo, Trine... all play great with a controller. Any racing game? Who the hell plays those with a keyboard? I've got a wheel, but there are still a handful of casual racing games I'd prefer on a couch with a controller over that.

This isn't meant to replace someones PC, but I can see its usefulness in a world where the majority of games are designed around consoles and meant to be played on a TV with a controller. If it is priced right and works well, I see no reason why it can't be successful.

You need to have a decent PC rig to play PC games on a TV. And at that it downscales it.

So first you need to spendy the money on a semi-beefy pc. Then you need to buy the device.

So Sure it might be priced right.....but that doesnt include the cost of a Decent PC to run it.

Well to stream it on your Tv, you still need to hook up the device via HDMI to the TV.

So if you want to play on your TV, hookup up your PC to your TV Via HDMI. Just like this device.

There ya go....stream gaming on the TV!

If you want to use a controller, get a wireless 360 controller.

It's alot cheaper buying a HDMI cable and a 360 controller, then this device.

My PC is nowhere near my living room, and I'm in an apartment, so I can't do in wall modifications. A 100ft HDMI cable would probably do it, but that's $70 anyway, and I've got to run the wire through my home. Then I've got to find a way to use a controller. Wireless anything isn't going to go through walls, and that's much to far for a USB extension cable. Then i've still got the problem of not being able to navigate anything that requires mouse or keyboard input (which I assume this device will have some sort of support for). I'd guess I'd also have to disable my PC monitor and enable the TV as my primary monitor every time I want to use it for games to know to start on that screen. Maybe there's a program for this, I dunno. Setting up a solution to play my PC on my TV without moving it near the TV just isn't practical. Even if it's doable, it would likely be a pain in the ass, which defeats the purpose. If this controller can simulate the ease of a console without looking like crap on a large screen, I'd gladly pay the price of a console for it.

Agreed, but I don't think the intention here is for someone to buy an expensive computer, then this, just to play on a TV. I can't see anyone doing that over just getting a console if they only want to play on a TV. For everyone out there who already has a nice PC, I don't see this as being all that crazy for certain games. Like I said, no one should be buying this to play BF3 or similar on their TV. It's not replacing a PC or a mouse and keyboard... but there are plenty of games on PC that would play better on a TV.

Totally understandable. But wireless gaming from a PC to a controller, which you hookup to a TV HDMI, will have a huge amount of latency issues.

It takes a SHITLOAD of wireless bandwidth to transmit a 1080p signal. So there is no way it will do that. It will more then likely down scale the sample to 720p (which introduces more input lag).

So even then, you will need a wireless card for your pc (more money, specially if you want a decent one for good signal strength to the device).

All in all, it really is not going to be a great experience for hardcore gamers. If people want to play PC games on a TV. You might as well buy an Xbox 360, which cost $199. And this device will cost way more then $199. (since 99% of the PC games are ported from consoles)

If your married or live with the girl this will not work out at all. They will kick you out back into your man cave / computer room.

I have already done something similar with just using a 25' dvi to hdmi cable and a extended usb cable with xbox controller so I could play in the living room on my 55" tv. I even went and got a powered usb hub so I could hookup a mouse and keyboard.

It's cool for a little while but then you realize your trying to play with a controller and that just sucks. Granted there are maybe 1 or 2 games out there that are better with a controller (racing and fighting games). You constantly want to go back to the keyboard and mouse and a desk to sit at.

Exactly. Which is why for my living room PC. I have a coffee table that lifts up to your lap. So my wireless keyboard and mouse work perfectly.

For PC gamers, a controller is only good for racing and fighting games....But even some hardcore PC gamers who play fighters use a keyboard.

I guess since bashing Windows 8 is so 2012...people must need something new to hate on.

Input lag and image quality would be a HUGE concern of mine. I'm not saying I'm ready to run out and buy this... I would absolutely have to try a live demo or something first. It's just something I'd like to see work well, because I think there is a very useful application for it if it can do a good job and mimicking the console experience. Time will tell.

I've already got a PS3 and a 360, but I still have an overwhelming amount of games acquired in Steam sales that I'd rather play on a TV if the right solution existed to do it properly.

I totally agree with you. I researched for over 2 months trying to find the best solution. The only thing you can really do to get badass gaming on a TV, is to build your own HTPC.

And with Ivy Bridge being such a lower powered CPU, and GPU's being low powered now too. Building a lower powered beast in a very small ITX case is very easy.

Still interested, not going to speculate on it failing or not. Once it is closer to release we will know enough to make a real educated opinion of it being something we would want or not, as it stands, I like the idea.

No one is really bashing. Just stating facts (at least I am).

If it works, with no latency issues, and no downscaling im TOTALLY interested.

But I got a feeling, those 2 major points (at least for me) will be there from the get go....

Kind of interesting but if it's over $100 I just don't see it being much more than a toy for the most elite of nvidia lovers out there. But we shall see, once again I see others jumping on something Nintendo is doing remote playability. MS is trying with smart glass (which sucks BTW) and I love my Xbox. Sony with Vita remote play which they have all but abandoned (thanks alot Sony). Of all these things the only one I like is the Wii U, it's remote play is awesome lag free and great for when other people wanna watch TV and I feel the need for some game time.

But like I said we shall see... If its good I'm all over it!

Pretty much. This is the result of Nvidia being shut out of the next gen console market.

There are products/apps (much cheaper) that can do exactly what this does already. Check out Splashtop or Kainy, they can stream your PC screen to your phone or tablet and if you are at home you can use a wireless xbox 360 controller, wireless KB/mouse to control your PC and play the games. Kainy also has a controller mode which turns your phone into a controller for your pc games/emulators, etc Also both of these apps can stream your games over the internet using 3g/4g. Kainy also allows you to use your xbox 360 controller attached to your tablet/phone and you can map any keys to the controller.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has been doing this :) If you have a Tegra powered android device you can also use Splashtop THD to add on screen touch controls. But Since I have an iPad I have just been using my 360 controller which seems to have pretty good range. I can sit on the couch with my fiancee while she watches Grays Anatomy, and be playing a game on my PC but viewing it on the iPad and controlling it with the 360 controller :) hell think I have been doing this for over a year now.

So, if my PC is already connected to my TV (which I've done since 2005-ish), I don't really need this do I? I don't see the appeal of this device at all, but maybe most people still use a computer desk to play on their PC? I'm kind of confused.

The idea looks interesting. If it works well I'll probably buy one.

Personally, I'm not buying another computing device to play games on my computer, nor do will I do so to play Android games from the GPlay store. I understand the problem they are looking to solve for some people, but I don't see how this would fit for me, and most people I know.

If this device offers up an unique and interesting portable gaming experience on its own as the primary feature with an excellent PC streaming implementation as the secondary feature, then it might see some success in the gaming market, possibly even great success. It does seem like a good idea to help those that are too stubborn, cheap or not knowledgeable enough to build their own HTPC, outside of that its usefulness seems pretty limited. However, we haven't seen the final version yet, so let's see what it does when it comes to market. I'm trying not to insta-hate on this like I did with OnLive when I first heard about it.

Am I the only one who also sees problems with the hinge for the display on the controller? I've watched my teenagers play on the PS3 and they're hard on the controllers. Jumping up and down, moving side to side, etc... I can't see these controllers with display lasting that long.

So is this Nvidia's response for not having any chips in the next generation consoles?

Wow PC gamers do NOT like change or anything new. Already making assumptions about lag and how bad it will look LOL. Why don't you guys go crawl up in your hole and nest in your COD14 while the market actually evolves like it always has. Not every gamer wants to sit in front of a 24" monitor playing the same FPS part 14 in an uncomfortable desk all day. GEssshh:rolleyes:

Oh yeah let's not forget how bad the GTX6XX series was before it came out... OMG the card is so CRIPPLEDZ... The bandwidth is lower numbers, it sucks. LOL

So basically stating facts, you think us PC gamers are not wanting change?

How about instead of trying to troll the thread, you post something meaningful or post facts showing us wrong.

1080p bandwidth over a wireless connection is no joke. If you know of some new technology that helps with that im totally willing to listen.

Trolling a discussion about actual facts is not needed

PC gaming has always been ahead of the curve. Consoles do what pc gaming does first every five years late...if that makes sense.

Final Fantasy 30? Mario 20? Street Fighter 10? Tekken 12? Getting my hint yet?

BTW, whats wrong with a 24" monitor if console guys sit in front of a 60" tv playing Black Ops?

All I want to be able to do is stream games from my desktop while playing them on my laptop. Or use an external GPU with my laptop. Why must it be so difficult???

I don't understand all the hate. It's not like NVIDIA is forcing people to buy the device. I applaud them for getting into the mobile gaming arena while offering support for a "console like" experience using the PC or cloud gaming. Like it or not this is the direction gaming is headed and it takes time to develop it further to help minimize things like input lag.

Time to sell the Vita

I wouldn't worry about the lag guys. If you have played the Wii U you don't notice the lag at all on a game that required precise controls, like Mario. The wii u controller is streamed via a dedicated wireless-n connection to the console.

The Wii U, doesnt transmit 1080p over a wireless connection.

Wii U graphics isnt even 720p.....

So. What community is this aimed at? I guess I'm just one of those people that will just run HDMI to there TV. I don't game on my phone, I much prefer my DS/PSP.

EDIT: It's just weird device imo. Maybe if they tag on a phone service I could see other people using it.

I see the chance for some real awesomeness here that will appeal to many PC gamers. For those of you that don't "get it," it is likely not a product you need nor want. And that makes sense, everything is not for everybody. As for those of you that keep parroting, "Lag...Squawk!" "Image quality....Squawk!" I am absolutely sure those two issues have never crossed NVIDIA's mind and they are thanking you right now for making the company see the light. We will get some hands on with the Shield very soon, likely in 3 to 4 four weeks and report back then, and of course we will be looking for the obvious warts.

Yeah the screen on the tablet is 854 x 480.. Its a low powered console and it is able to drive 2 off those tablets while rendering 1080P on the tv and there is no lag. If the wii can do this surely a pc can. Wireless N should have more than enough bandwith for 720P+....

It might show a 1080p, but it will be scaled.

There is no console on the market that can play games at full 1080p. When you play a console on a 1080p TV. It is upscaled.

And just think you have two godly fast GPUs on each end for encode/decode for compression with Tegra and GTX 680. As I typed earlier, controller input is being compressed as well to address latencies.

I realize most console games do not run at 1080p, some games do actually support 1080p on consoles though.

Waiting for a [H] hands on review, but I think Nvidia has this thing running pretty smoothly being this close to release. If the price is right, I'll bite on one.
If it was just for streaming pc games, that wouldn't sale it to me. But as an android device that surely has a web browser, apps, etc... plus the ability to stream pc games, make it seem pretty admirable to me.
Would be cool when you're on the road stuck in a motel room.

Im curious if you could stream from a laptop that has a 650M or above GPU.....that would TOTALLY Rock on the road.

Imo this is going to give Sony and MS, and possibly Nintendo a run for the money.

I mean think about this, you buy a high end machine, and you can play EVERY game in your steam library on your couch with a big screen TV.

And have a great gaming rig to boot for them MMO's or what not.

This will be the first time I would buy a console. :D
