New 360 Revealed

I can't believe anyone would seriously be stupid enough to move a machine like that when it's on.

Hell, the first thing you do when you want to play is remove a sticker covering the drive which says specifically not to move the console whilst there is a disc in the drive.

well as you just saw in the video shit can happen in the real world.

I can honestly say that I don't know anyone that dumb, maybe a kid could knock it over, but then I assume that if you had kids you wouldn't put it in a place they could potentially knock it over.

its not a question of intelligence. somebody could easily go up and bump it or try to look at with without thinking something like that can happen. just think of all the other devices that use dvds/cds and dont eat them up just because you move them. good thing it was Sony that made the cd walkman. lol

I still don't see how, but I'll take your word for it being something that happens.

I've always assumed that this sort of stuff happens no matter who makes the kit. Just seems like common sense when virtually everything warns you not to move the equipment when there's a disc in there.

It is a question of intelligence. You put your device in a place where it's almost impossible for it to get knocked over.

Why is it people are so quick to make excuses for stupidity and carelessness?

so I guess the guy in the video along with every other person this has happened to must have an IQ below 80?

although the odds are small, in the REAL world shit can happen especially if you have kids. heck people see something new and they want to look at it. I am sure the last thing going through their mind is that its going to eat the disc from moving it or picking it up. especially since they likely wont even know its running until they touch it.

it looks like the AV plug still blocks the HDMI so I cant use HDMI and regular audio at the same time if I wanted to use the 360 on my pc monitor?

I can't believe Microsoft would seriously be stupid enough to not use a disc drive that wouldnt' scratch games. Sony and Nintendo haven't had issues like this.

ANOTHER reason never to have em

If wanna throw a system around with a spinning disc in it, go get a PSP or CD player and have fun. Console are meant to stay put.

What kind of idiot would move their console while its on? I wouldnt do this to my PC and if I did I would expect similar results. Anyone dumb enough to leave their console out where it can be 'knocked' over, deserves to learn a lesson. The probability of my console moving is about as much as my TV settopbox, which is .0000001%. That being an earthquake.

One like that guy in the video who clearly is too dumb to deserve to go to E3. :D

The only time I've been worried about scratched discs in any console generation was with the Halo 3 LE set because they used cheap foam "grips" to hold the DVDs in the tin and a lot of them popped loose during shipment from being knocked around. Luckily you could kind of rattle the tin and hear them pinging around if they were loose, so you knew which box set to buy. ;)

It shouldn't be a big deal. I assume this is just a result of Microsoft cutting corners on manufacturing far too aggressively, because it's certainly possible to build a drive mechanism that doesn't scratch discs when moved about (it's been being done for over a decade now).

I just picked one up and I have to say, it's nice!

Coming from a pre-HDMI 360, the inclusion of HDMI and 802.11n was enough for me. Not to mention, playing Mass Effect 2 (with the game installed) was almost unbearable with the fan running all the time.

I got it for $100 after trading in my old console. The guy at Gamestop was actually pretty cool, I managed to get $40 for my modded 120GB hard drive, an extra $25 for the wireless controller, plus more with the throwaway games I traded in. I just used a 4GB flash drive to transfer all my content over instead of buying the $20 transfer cable, so I'm good to go.

Now to pick up some backlog titles I missed..

See, im not the only one who did this. Sucks I cant get my new 360 till I come back from vacation that I don't wanna go on in the first place

I don't see any reason to attack someone else over their decision. It's a personal thing. My console was two revisions behind and had no warranty, so for me the choice was justified. I could see why someone else would want to hold onto theirs given the circumstances, but to each his own.

Enjoy the Xbox! It really is gorgeous.

The new 360 still eats disc.

You get what you pay for when you want cheap.

so lemme get this straight....if you move your 360 while a disk is in it, it gets destroyed? you mean just like the sticker on the front tells you?

you know there is a reason why most laptop drives force you to lock the disk onto the spindle..........

lol common sense would indicate that one should not move a tray loading device when it is spinning a disk inside.

that's not true I can use my hdmi and vga out at the same time on my 360 lol that was how I was able to change the video mode back to 1336*768 for my TV lol

it is true if you want to use the standard component av cable for audio and hdmi for video. people had to crack the the plastic cover on the standard av plug if they wanted to use the standard audio and hdmi at the same time on the previous 360 and they will on this one too.

Went out today to try to find a new 360; no such luck. 2 Gamestops, 1 Wal-Mart and 1 Best Buy with no luck at any of them. The earliest it looks like these stores will be getting any more in now appears to be Tuesday (the Best Buy said this) so I'm really disappointed I won't get it until then at the earliest but oh well.

Also for anyone even thinking they could trade in their old 360 to Gamestop or EB or someplace and help smooth over the cost of the new unit; think again. I inquired at Gamestop just for fun (I was pretty sure I'd be much better selling it privately anyhow, but worth a shot) and now that the new units are "out" they are only paying $25 for an old console and $10 for the hard drive. L O Fucking L. I'm not surprised of course, just thought I'd share for anyone still contemplating doing this like I was :p

Doesn't surprise me... screw Gamestop that place is a joke.

I would think no one would be dumb enough to trade in a fat 360 for $25 just to get a slim, but I'm sure there will be people out there that do it. Absolute worst case, if you don't want to sell it here, on CL, or on eBay - take it to a damn pawn shop, they'd give you at least $50 for it.

lol went to walmart last night and grabbed an arcade unit plus a $50.00 GC and two games all for $150.00.

I didn't plan on buying another, but I really wanted to check out FF13 and Alan wake... the deal is way too good to pass up... even if it does just end up collecting dust (like my last one did)

what did you have to say to get them to match the price since the ad says online only?

It's not online only :) I thought is was initially but saw a thread on fatwallet where people were buying them in store.

Sure enough, when I got to walmart, they had signs up advertising the same deal as the online ad. The first one I went to was sold out though (and the other location only had like 6 left). I would suggest jumping on this deal ASAP if you plan on buying one before they're all snagged up.

I did it on Monday and got $138 store credit for my "old" elite.

Actually they are having a promo and it's not to bad. This is only if you are applying the funds towards the new slim. Getting $130 for an xbox 360 w/20gb drive would be pretty hard right now on craiglist or ebay.
Not that I'm defending gamestop, but think this promo is actually pretty good given the circumstances.

well I was at my local Walmart yesterday and there was no sign for the $50 gift card just the $149 price which was an official price drop anyway. I guess I will try and go to a different one later tonight.

just call them and ask so you dont have to make the trip for nothing :)

I asked the girl behind the counter as she was grabbing the console "these come with 2 games and a 50.00 GC, right?" to which she replied "yes they do"

unless its up to a particular store to honor the deal, you shouldn't have a problem. Good luck. Post back if you're able to grab one

actually I did just call and the girl said there wasnt a 50 gift card but then she checked with the manager and said yes. I guess I better go jump on it.

I don't see why not. The software is still the same AFAIK.

Any other 360 accessory should work just fine on it, so I don't see why the HD Rom wouldn't

I think it looks okay too. Kinda tempting. I'd be at $130 with just the console/controller and hdd. Maybe I have some games that could eek that up a bit, get it closer to ~$100 diff. That would be hard to pass up.

But I hardly use the thing as it is.

Anandtech has taken apart there 360 slim already *Kyle doesn't deserve one apparently* Interestingly enough, the fan is actually "sucking" on the HSF unit rather then "blowing" That would help reduce dust intake from the front dramatically now that I think about it. Heres also is the wireless N card and comparison from the old model

Good to see them using a suitably beefy fan. That's a much better layout than the first one too.
