Rating exceedingly well on consoles.

A triumph for the series and one of this generation's greatest games yet. Monster Hunter World takes the beating heart of a vital, niche franchise and elevates it toward universal appeal.

Monster Hunter has been in need of a big change for years, and this reboot-of-sorts could have easily gone wrong. Instead, Capcom took a careful look at Monster Hunter's design and cut all the fat while leaving the series trademark dense gameplay completely intact. All the changes, from the broad, sweeping ones to the granular alterations, only serve to improve an already winning formula. The next generation of Monster Hunter has finally begun, and, with Monster Hunter World, it's off to an incredibly good start.

Monster Hunter: World is one of the best RPGs you’ll ever play, and the most inviting the series has ever been. It’s clear to see why the franchise has such a dedicated following, and now that fanbase is set to grow ever larger thanks to the incredible steps the developer has taken to make this game more welcoming to many more players.

For those with a penchant for punishment, a soft spot for stats, and a crush on brilliant combat – you simply have to buy this game.

Monster Hunter: World is the best game in the series, and a welcoming gateway for newcomers to get in on the tail-chopping, rodeo-riding, and titan-slaying. I never want to play the series on handheld again after this, as the grainy graphics and clawed clutch can’t compare to the redefined experience core platforms facilitate.

Whether or not it's the best, this is certainly the most audacious Monster Hunter game. World takes a dramatic leap into a look, feel, and size that feels truly new, simultaneously staying true to the series’ ideals by maintaining the addictive loop of combat, intimidating monsters and meaningful upgrades that fans love. The sheer depth and commitment required is still intense, but it clearly isn’t Capcom’s aim to court a casual crowd. This is as all-consuming and incredible a ride as ever.

This long standing series makes an outrageously good current gen debut. The size and scope of the environments, and the monsters in them, is awe inspiring, making Monster Hunter: World a true (lizard) king of games.

I don't buy the excuse that PC takes longer to develop for. If they were being honest they'd just say "We'll get around to the PC when we feel like it, it's not a priority for us so eat shit. We need to make sure the precious consoles are taken care of first."

Its the first PC title for the Monster Hunter team. Developing for multiple platforms can take a lot of people if you're not outsourcing to other teams or outside contractors. So them needing more time due to limited resources probably is true. If it leads to a good PC port does it really matter?

I really can't believe some of the glowing hype and hyperbole I'm reading in some of that.

I really tried to get into it with the open beta they did on the PS4 and it just didn't happen for me. It didn't "click." :(

It took me awhile to get into Monster Hunter...a few tries, actually. But once I did I was hooked. I guess for me Dark Souls is like what Monster Hunter is to you, I tried numerous times for several hours and it just never "clicked" for me.

However, I can say that this is probably the easiest Monster Hunter to get into for newbies, and likely to be the best one yet overall with all of the QOL changes they made.

Agreed. The PSP one I tried way back just never clicked. And even watching people play Tri looked interesting but also like something that I didn't think would really be for me. But as soon as I saw gameplay for World I wanted to try it out. The demo really clicked with me, even after just one hunt, and I knew I'd be hooked. I ended up picking up MHW instead of FighterZ since I knew I'd only have time for one of them.

what made the earlier games hard for newbs to get into?...difficulty?...I hope the new game is hard as I love challenging games...from the reviews I've read it sounds very similar to the Souls games in that it's all about recognizing enemy patterns and getting the timings down

I've never gotten bit by the Dark Souls bug. ;)

I liked what I saw in the beta. There's a lot to like in this and I want to give it its just dues. The 21 minute IGN video answered some of the questions I had and I'm just looking into all of this. I think there's a lot of promise here overall.

Good tips here: https://kotaku.com/tips-for-playing-monster-hunter-world-1822430432

The message I'm getting loud and clear from many corners is: The beta was "decent" but didn't do the best job introducing people and setting them up.

This game at 60fps and up on a nice PC will be stunning.

From what people say MHW is still hard, but comparing games there are a lot of quality of life improvments. Controls are better, the UI is better, tacking monsters is more convenient, there aren't a million load times when hunting monsters. Those are the big QOL improvements I've seen people talk about, but there are a handful of smaller ones as well.

Here is a video I found on the QOL improvements

This game is SO good. I am something like 350 hours in and I still play it. I'll probably pick up the PC version just because.

Cross platform play would be awesome, but we know how Sony feels about that.

And then the not-so-good news comes out. Looks to be using Denuvo, and may be 60 FPS max. :\

Denuvo isn't an issue, but capping a game to 60 FPS in this day and age is disappointing. Seems to be common with Japanese developers.

Easy my ass. Those fucking dragons destroy my soul.

There are a lot of myths going around about "console ports" while technically it's a port by definition, it's not exactly a process that destroy's the continuity from one platform to the next. I read the occasional developer blog / post and 'they' often say they can get the game up and running quickly but that a lot of time is needed to tweak the game via the platforms API's, etc. Basically they need a lot of time to polish the games particular behavior if it's from PS4 to PC or PC to PS4. Consoles are basically entry level personal computers.

"When the game launches the visuals will have parity with the console versions," he says, "but we’re considering releasing a free update after launch."

??...what?...what have they been working on all these months?...I thought they previously stated that they were working to make the PC version as good as possible...does free update mean unlocked frame rate and HD Texture pack?...then why the rush to release it in August?...this sounds like a total disappointment...plus they're charging $60!...and no cross--platform support...no mod support either...

The phrase "parity with consoles" always triggers me. In the case of this game it makes me believe it will be a stuttering mess, just like the console versions.

no way am I touching this on Day 1...it doesn't even include any of the post-launch content that was released on consoles...I also have a feeling that performance is going to suck...this has all the makings of a terrible PC port...Capcom is so hit or miss...Dragons Dogma PC was amazing...if MH: W is going to have console parity, none of the post launch content included, 60 fps cap, no mod support etc then why would anyone want to buy this over the console version (unless they don't own a console)?

They showed Deviljho and Kulve Taroth in the PC trailer, so I am hoping they have included all of the updates up until now.

Graphics having "parity with consoles" is somewhat disappointing, though I do think it looks great (and runs okay) on my PS4 Pro already. You can play it in pseudo-4K at 30 FPS on the PS4 Pro and the textures look great, so maybe PC will do 60 FPS.

The performance does have me concerned. The "recommended spec" is a 1060 and that is supposed to do 1080p @ 30 FPS on "High" settings.

the PC version won't have the console post-launch content on release...

Will the Steam version have monsters like Deviljho and Lunastra at launch, or will those be added in coming updates?

They will be updates after launch. We are planning to release the updates that came to console on a shorter cycle so you can get your hands on them quicker

the PC version has graphics settings above 'High' which will enable 60fps...

Huh, I missed the Q&A...that seems...dumb. Though a shorter release cycle makes sense, so eventually they should be at parity across all platforms content-wise.

no way you knew what Z-prepass was :D
All I remember from my OpenGL classes was that it was a useless function nobody used. This was 10 years ago, though. The point was to reduce the calculation time for shaders by not passing the objects not visible in the depth buffer to them. Newer hardware for the time supported ordered indices which took care of the issue in the geometry pass, anyway. Doing both could cause graphical anomalies in the final rendering pass. My memory of DirectX 9 was that Z-buffer handling was handled implicitly. I have not touched any kind of rendering code in about 7 years, so my information may be out of date when it comes to DirectX 11 and Vulkan. Maybe they found some use for it in that time.

I heard frame rates on the consoles struggled to consistently hit 60 so maybe it's an optimization issue which is forcing them to cap it at 60 on PC...the PC version could go either way and be a complete mess or fairly good...I'm definitely going to wait till after it launches to see what the performance is like along with other things like kb/m support etc

I would def say wait til after release and see what reviewers and pc players are saying before buying. Just my own opinion of course which means little.

I'll be preordering. console got glowing reviews. this is exactly the type of game I like. I am sure they will fix any issues. :D

if they still haven't fixed performance on consoles which is their main platform I doubt the PC version is going to be much better...

This is the team's first time working on a PC game. I imagine all of this time has been spent figuring that out. If console parity graphics at launch and some content not releasing right away means they deliver a good port then it is, probably, worth it. Still, I'n going to remain a bit wary on this one since it is the first attempt from this team.

I see PC systems becoming more and more a "legitimate" platform for making video games. Consoles still make the majority of money, but if a dude is waving a huge wad of cash at you, why say no? Dark souls came out on PC and surprised everyone with the sales. Other stuff too. Nier automata was unexpected. Nioh came out. it took a while to get the keyboard stuff done but it works pretty well now. Hell, even regular games you want to wait for a patch or two so that the major discovered problems get solved.
