Apparently with their new regional pricing, the game is $20 in Africa on the epic store. I might try using a VPN.

There is an entire UI revamp releasing this year that they have been working on for a few years. The new friends list and chat are a preview of what is to come.

I have little faith in it. The UI for the most part is fine. The games library itself has three to four styles. They do try to shove the failed big picture mode in your face; I'd be happy if they moved that icon elsewhere. But I can't see them improving on it in any meaningful way. Figure out how to stop putting garbage games for sale, review bombing, and the option to select patch versions. Those are actual improvements that have been needed for years.

Yeah, I'll be doing this despite epic. :)
Metro series is interesting. It rewards exploration.
Just some annoyances in a somewhat hidden endgame mechanic where if you are too evil (killing humans) it locks you out of "good" endings.
Also other types of moral "choices" which you may not realize are happening.

it's easy to get the good ending by simple exploration, listening to a lot of the conversations people are having and helping people with gold bullets etc...although the good ending in the original game meant nuking the Dark Ones which never really made sense...but that's the canon ending so I guess they had to do that

how is the move to the Epic Store going to affect a site like GreenManGaming?...I notice they don't have the game available for PC...will they get it before launch and provide keys for the Epic client?

Welp, grey market keys may be another issue that gets fixed with the change, but nobody really knows at this point.

I know some of the distributors are now being issued Epic keys. No idea which ones though. Sounds like the Steam keys may dry up. I assume it will be like an Ubisoft game. If you bought it directly on Steam you get a Steam key. Anywhere else and it is Uplay/Epic.

Their answer is pretty dodgy since they just say it will be honored and you will receive a key... I think they will hand out Epic Store keys since that's who the exclusivity deal is with. I think if it was a Steam key they would have specified.

This is from their website.

I pre-ordered Metro Exodus through Humble Bundle or similar key seller – what happens to my order?

Your pre-order will be honored and you will receive your key on release - 15th February 2019.

4A Games developer: If Metro Exodus does not sell on the PC, the next Metro will not come out for it

the developer went one step further and stated that if all PC gamers boycott Metro Exodus then the next Metro game (if there is one mind you) will not come out on the PC...now I’m pretty sure that the developer was exaggerating here but it begs the question; how many PC sales can guarantee the continuation of the Metro franchise on the PC?...

I'm starting to lose my hype for Metro Exodus now with all this drama.

Sigh. This was from an individual, not a spokesman for the company. You cannot present this as an official company position. The game is going to sell well, regardless of steam. epic may not be "consumer friendly" but all the same, selling a game for $10 less than steam, and allowing the developers to make more money, sounds like a win-win to me.

I already had this pre-ordered on Steam, so this drama really didn't resonate with me. I understand Deep Silver going with Epic for the smaller cut (12% vs 30%), for a relatively small Developer, it is just good business. Undoubtedly Epic said 'the only way we do this is if we get a timed exclusive', which I think is shitty, but they are trying to get themselves on the map against the juggernaut that is Steam (who has forced it's own exclusives if you'll remember), so... whatever. Do I like it? No. Would I do the same thing in their position? Possibly. It sucks, but this is done in many forms of business on a daily basis. It is vile and unethical, but it is hardly new.

Now, for an employee to publicly take a stand against & threaten the PC Community in the guise of unofficial spokesperson is a whole other story. We will have to wait and see if 4A make an "official" statement that endorses or rebukes this, but at this moment I don't read this as anything other than one employee's knee-jerk reaction & opinion. There is a section of the PC crowd that is saying "fine, we'll just pirate it then", and to them I don't blame 4A for saying "well f*ck you then". That is not the solution. But, if 4A is saying "well, f*ck you then" to the player base that is trying to organize a boycott, which is peaceful, legal protest... then I think they are going about it the wrong way and are going to get the backlash they deserve. It is their IP and they can Develop it on whatever platform they choose, but the PC fans put them on the map to begin with. Burning that bridge over something like this just seems like short-sighted and emotional decision making.

The regular % is 12%. That does not require a timed exclusive. I suspect they are getting a better cut than that to justify giving Epic a timed exclusive and losing out on the steam market for an entire year.

Metro can probably manage it since they are fairly well known IP, however I think it is more devastating to smaller IPs like Ashen, since they are unknown and Epic doesn't seem to be getting them much traffic.

LOL.

A win-win would have been leaving the game for sale on Steam for $60 and making it $50 on Epic. That's increasing competition. That's giving consumers a choice. Instead they took a bribe to stop selling it on Steam two weeks before launch: everybody loses and they get their game boycotted.

The bright side is this trainwreck will serve as a cautionary tale for any other publisher when Tim Sweeney comes knocking with his bag of Fortnite cash trying to get more games removed from Steam.

so if Epic had announced this as a store exclusive right from the beginning it would have made a difference?...no chance...PC gamers are especially whiny and love to complain about every tiny thing...the fact that it's not on Steam at launch is the reason why people are crying...they are just using the anti-competitive etc reasons as an excuse to fake boycott the game

Personally I'm just getting annoyed by the amount of launchers needed atm and I'm starting to make an effort to keep it down to just a few and Epic ain't one of them.

Having my account information hacked or stolen isn't a tiny thing. Sure there is a risk with Steam and others, but we try to mitigate it as much as we can, using the Epic store is NOT a way to go about doing that.

Steam had user information stolen in the past...using that as an excuse for not using Epic is not valid

Not in your world but I don't feel comfortable giving my information to a company that have had 10's of millions of their accounts hacked.

I'm still hunting for the source, but 4A officially apologized today and did not back up the threats made. I will update when I have a link.

EDIT: Okay the reply comes from a Russian forum (same place the rogue Dev made his threats), so rather than deal with a Russian link & needed translator, just check this out:

eh, internet outrage culture bullshit. bunch of youtubers fanning the flames for views. any time this happens it is always the same people doing the same shit, until others have to join in for the views and it becomes a regular brigade. Deep Silver is the owner, not the developer, yet the developer is getting the shit. Some one, not a company spokesman, spoke out and now 4A is in the shit too.

Don't bring up Jessica Price. She was fired for her actions, and as an individual was pretty upset about it. Yet the outrage culture kept repeatedly attacking her based on her comments. So screw these youtubers that use fake outrage to get views.

I do not disagree with a word or that. This guy is "king of the nerds" in that respect, his whole channel feeds on drama and fanning the flames... but he was the first one with a source that I could find, so 'beggars can't be choosers'. The more important thing for me is the fact 4A spoke up to straighten things out. There are not a lot of dedicated SP Developers anymore, and I have enjoyed the Metro series from the beginning, to say nothing of STALKER before it. I am excited for Exodus and did not want this launch to get marred by blown up BS.

They did put Redux on sale during the Steam Lunar Sale or whatever, both games for 7.99 or something like that. Maybe they are trying to make peace, lol.

Or maybe that's a cheap enough price point for people to buy the game just to review bomb it even more. :ROFLMAO:

Lunar sale is like Year of the Pig or something this year. It's celebrated in different countries mainly I think China and maybe India I'm probably wrong.

There was no reason for it not to be on both Epic, Steam and other stores like GOG, key websites, etc. Making it exclusive guarantees it will be heavily pirated and may have ruined their reputation as a game developer.

I am sure there were plenty of reason$$$ for them to put it exclusively on epic. money talks. steam had a good run, but realistically, what other business gets a 30-40% cut of the profit just for hosting electrons?
yeah, you can talk about how feature rich and so forth it is, but does that add enough value to justify the % they take? Steam community is fine, but usually I go to reddit. So it really isn't much of a loss.

Technically they would still make more money on Steam. It is not a flat 30% cut. Here, read this borrowed from another thread:

According to another [H] that isn't the case

"Metro Exodus on Steam: $60
Metro Exodus on Epic: $50

Steam is 30% only for the first $10 million of sales, which is like a drop in the lake of the total sales for a game like Metro Exodus. After $10 million in sales, Steam then charges 25%. Then, at $50 million in sales, Steam charges 20%.

By the time 4A and Deep Silver sell 1 million copies of Metro Exodus on Steam, they will have made $1 million more than they would from selling 1 million copies through the Epic store:

1 million $50 copies sold through Epic = $50,000,000 total = $44,000,000 to 4A and Deep Silver

1 million $60 copies sold through Steam = $60,000,000 total = 7,000,000 (30%) + 30,000,000 (25%) + 8,000,000 (20%) = $45,000,000 to 4A and Deep Silver

4 million Epic sales of a $50 game = $200,000,000 total revenue, with $44 per copy going to the publisher = $176,000,000 going to 4A and Deep Silver

4 million Steam sales of a $60 game = $240,000,000 total revenue, with:

$10 million with a fee of 30% = $42 per copy going to the publisher = $7,000,000 going to 4A and Deep Silver

$40 million with a fee of 25% = $45 per copy going to the publisher = $30,000,000 going to 4A and Deep Silver

$190 million with a fee of 20% = $48 per copy going to the publisher = $152,000,000 going to 4A and Deep Silver

For a total of $189,000,000 going to 4A and Deep Silver

$176 million (from Epic) < $189 million (from Steam)

4A and Deep Silver will actually make more money selling ME on Steam than they will on Epic. Full break-down here: https://hardforum.com/threads/metro-exodus-is-an-epic-store-exclusive.1976314/page-6#post-1044061477

Metro Exodus is an exclusive on Epic not because that's where it will make more money from sales, but because Epic are paying Deep Silver a lump sum to make ME exclusive to Epic for a year in a bid to boost Epic's customer base".

I believe Epic cut a deal with Deep Silver for notoriety.

c'mon now...pirates are pirates...that's what they do...they're just going to use this as an excuse to pirate the game when that's what they were going to do all along...

True. They will pirate the game, but I wonder if they're still going to threaten to not release the game on PC due to the major backlash.

Sli is seriously dying. Since ita on devs now to add it to a gane its going away. Nvidia also down played it lately also.

Sucks been using sli since 2004 its weird only having one card now.
