MARATHON (Bungie)

This might be one of the most aesthetically unpleasing games I've ever seen.

The geometry in the world seems completely illogical to the point that I question whether it was designed by humans or AI. Unless that is part of the lore, don't know and I couldn't be bothered to look into it further.
I agree; it burns the retinas.

I believe the lore states that EVERYTHING is 3D Printed which is why everything looks so blocky and plasticy.

Bungie in their infinite wisdom has chosen not to allow Linux so I will not be partaking in this.

Let’s not even mention the dogshit UI. And one time I thought my game was glitching by puking brightly colored squares all over the place nearly making me blind and …. Turns out it’s just a game mechanic.

Did an elementary school class develop the style of this game and UI? It wasn’t even an elementary art class.

So how are people feeling about the game so far now that they got a chance to play?

I love the art style and general aesthetics, they are on point. I like the concept way more too, overall way cooler than Arc Raiders IMO. I didn't really play too much since I don't like extraction shooters (I bought Arc Raiders because people were saying even if you aren't into these games it would be the one to convert you, but it didn't)

Maybe I'd get into it at a lower price or if I could do a longer trial period at a lower price. But then cheating would be so much easier and rampant so I understand a $40 barrier of entry. It definitely has much more appeal to me compared to Arc Raiders (I love that it is first person so you can't just camp extractions without atleast exposing yourself)

I enjoy and will play both games. 😎

I’m having a blast with Marathon. It’s a lot of fun with a full squad on comms.

I agree the UI is bad. Maybe it makes sense for someone who has played hundreds of hours but for any new players it's terrible. And the tutorial stuff they put on it just makes it more confusing.

I've thankfully not experienced that but Ive seen video. You could call this game Plastic Neon Barf, the game. Shame in that I don't outright hate it or the art style. The concept is ok, like Arc Raiders maybe even more so it could use a pve mode, especially since I didn't see anyone else besides myself or teammates. Solo run was more fun then my teammates getting constantly wacked by npcs.

Ditto on the UI. It is not intuitive.

I tried playing some more and the more I played the less I liked it. It just feels like a corporate "hey we need to make an extraction shooter too" like I originally said when they announced it.

There was nothing that felt good about the game. The thrill of extracting at the last second while fighting another team was fun, but every extraction game has that and it's better in those.

Definitely not buying it.

Hah, ranked mode? I'm already sour on ranked competitive in most modern shooter type games, with this game no way could I take it seriously.

So Bungie admitted the dogshit UI is forcing players away, and intends to “revamp” it after launch.

Give us $40, trust us bro. 😆

Concord 3.0, calling it here. 2.0 was Highguard.

Except Sony paid billions for Bungie so don’t expect the servers to shutter immediately. It will likely be a slow 6 month+ death, but a failed game nonetheless the less.

And let me remind you, this is what you get instead of Destiny 3. Let that sink in.

**edit**
And…. Highguard was given a shutdown date officially. Mid March and it’s done completely.

Anyone want to bet on the popularity (player count)?

I predict that it will start out strong at 150k-200k players on release and then dwindle down to Tarkov/The Hunt levels of 10-25k after 2 months.

?

I bet 200 users or lower by 1 week after launch.

I compared this game to the Finals on FB some guy got all mad at me. He asked me if I knew what I was talking about. I think I have a grasp on this game. Its the Finals

I don't know; there seem to have been a decent amount of players saying that they loved it. It wouldn't surprise me if it died ala Concorde but I figure that it's got to be at least as good as The Hunt: Showdown. It's one of those sweaty FPS games so it 'should' have a small community. Whether that small community will keep Sony from just shuttering Bungie is another story.

ngl some of those comments I've been seeing on reddit supporting the game whenever it gets mentioned feel a bit like astroturfing.

I don't think the game is gonna be one big dumpster fire like the forums make it out to be. Yeah it won't be as big as Arc but arc is literally like a hello kitty island adventure game, it is extremely casual. This is more sweaty, I expect a smaller community as well

I agree with you. It doesn't seem like "Concord 3" to me. I don't like the game at all but I still see some people legitimately excited about it.

I'm expecting it to be a flavor of the month game. Which would still be disappointing to Bungie and Sony, but also to the people cheering it's demise.

But I'm not confident in my prediction. I wouldn't be surprsied if it fails and I wouldn't be surprised if it's successful.

87k people playing it right now. Will be interesting to see what happens over the weekend.

Slay the Spire 2 (Early access) came out today and has 250k. :ROFLMAO:

I just saw that and was going to post it. Many seem to like it but others saying it is still undercooked EA with not much changed from game1. To be fair, StS was a genre popularizing card game 7 years ago.

From gg dot deals, most official key sites are selling Marathon for 15% off. I think arc raiders was the same but I don't remember for sure.

I honestly thought someone was trolling last night and then I saw it with my own eyes. I don't think there is really any way to whitewash something like this.

We will see what this weekend's numbers look like for Marathon but so far they aren't lighting the world on fire.

Bungie (and Sony) need a big hit and I just don't think they are going to get it here.

I predict a f2p model within 6 months, cancellation within a year.
I'd be playing it if it was F2P, but would probably burn out with the amount of cheaters that would bring in. Even tarkov has a crazy cheating problem and that game isn't F2P either.

Honestly cheating in general is so bad now and has kept me off of non co-op multiplayer games for years now

The look of this is.....interesting. But I don't have a hardon for extraction shooters. Or online only MP shooters like Helldivers 2 (what a waste of $$ that was for me). I "liked" Destiny in the beginning and Destiny 2 had some cool parts but eventually lost interest.... I don't know about this one. I mean even Destiny is possible to play solo, there is at least a minimal attempt at a story. If I hadn't been travelling during the server slam I would have tried it.

I think they would do better if it had been $20 at the start, same with Arc raiders. Arc just had better hype and more positives over negatives.

Arc has had continued success because it’s a better game imo. It’s had its fair share of cheaters but they came into an already congested game genre and showed what you can do after the hype. It wasn’t luck and hype, hype can die overnight and we’ve seen plenty of examples of this.

Now it’s full price. If we see this trend or worse… then this game will be fighting uphill real fast.

I heard SkillUp (and others) mention that Bungie made a voluntary request to any and all to withold reviews for a month. The reason (excuse?) cited is that Bungie wants everyone to wait until this Cryo Archive endgame zone is released and then go for it. I have searched around and that all checks out.

I've never seen or heard of something like this before and I don't think it's a good look. I think they look scared. I think all gaming outlets should have declined this concept but some have not.

Yeah I agree, that is just scummy and a huge red flag

Sleazy... If they really thought it was that important to the game, they should have delayed for it.

Full release hasn't broken 100k yet. We'll see if the weekend is any better. Sunk cost fallacy is helping it here, I think, compared to free-to-play Highguard which lost 90% of its players in one day. Highguard couldn't even break 100k being free-to-play.

We shall see. I’d actually like for it to do well, I’d hate to see Bungie crumble.

Marathon is far better than Highguard. Highguard had flawed design principles that were just not going to work. Namely only 3v3 with huge maps.
