MARATHON (Bungie)

I'm more optimistic about Marathon than others here, but I definitely agree that Bungie has to be very careful in how it handles this game given the rough alpha. I love the story premise, aesthetics, and the thought of Bungie (at its best) doing an extraction shooter. I just know that there are no guarantees here.

FF14 is floundering also since the last expansion. Was never a good MMO to begin with.
I dunno, I liked it. It was nothing amazing, and the story was Anime as fuck, but it was a fun game overall.

I have no faith in this.

I loved the OG marathon games, loved the Bungie era Halo games, I even enjoyed Oni on the PS2. But the Bungie of old is not the Bungie of today, and this game looks like a "Me too" cash grab at the PVPVE genre which is already saturated with truly creative titles.

The Halo games were peak Bungie for me. Halo 1-3, but I also enjoyed Destiny 2 for a while.

All their games have been really good so I still have hope for this. But my gut is telling me it's going to be corporate DEI garbage.

I'm still confused as to what type of game this is?

It's made by the Halo and Destiny 2 company, right?? So is it a Co-Op type PvE game similar to D2?

People say it's an "extraction shooter" WTF is that? Arc Raiders, Fortnite, etc... I would never play those kiddy arcade type console games. Third person view games = hard pass, a shooter is first person meant to be played with a keyboard + mouse.

I did like Destiny 2, played it a lot few years ago, was an easy game to pop in and out of for a quick 30 to 45 minute fun, or really get into it for an hour plus, or could play it solo which was cool too.

Extraction shooters can be first or third person. Basically though, it's PvE with a small group of 3 or 4 players that fight hordes of crap, sometimes do some sort of objective and then wait for extraction from the area. It's basically something like a first person Helldivers with the usual overly stylized cartoon art style. But way less cool than even that would be.

It's both PvE and PvP, but always competitive rather than mostly co-op. You'll have AI enemies in the world and an unfolding narrative, but you'll also have to watch out for others trying to grab the same loot. There's a solo mode of sorts that doesn't require queuing up with a team before you go in. The closest parallels are Arc Raiders and Escape from Tarkov.

Fortnite is a battle royale game (see also PUBG, Apex Legends) and not really "kiddy" apart from the artwork — you need to be damn good to consistently win rounds.

There's no hard-and-fast rule on what perspective, input method, or art style a shooter should have. Splatoon is honestly one of the most entertaining shooters I've played, and that's a third-person, kid-friendly Switch title. Not everything needs to be a PC-oriented, grimdark-themed repeat of the mechanics that have been around for 30-plus years. You don't have to personally enjoy those games, to be clear — just know that shooters have evolved.

When have we heard that one before?

The makers of Concord and Highguard probably thought the same thing. Oh, and don't forget Relooter or whatever that shit show was.
Before the lead tech artist on Highguard deleted his X account he admitted as much. "This game has mainstream hit written all over it."

People want the game to collapse because it doesn't look that good.
It doesn't look good. It doesn't appear to offer anything new or interesting over other games in the genre. Extraction shooters are a dime a dozen and few have any staying power. While the cartoony visual styles are the norm for games of this type Marathon is probably too stylized and polarizing. Not only that but its for an IP barely anyone remembers and shares almost nothing in common with the original games.

Guns look like Minecraft I see what they're trying to do. Make the Crucible from Destiny with Stealth. Or Rainbow six seige.

It just doesn't stand out to me. Something I would look at amongst the sea of new games that come out daily and just see it as background noise in there.

Pretty much. I don't see this pulling many away from Arc Raiders or Tarkov. If my gaming group wants to play it, I'll give it a try but other than that it looks like a pass.

It's also buy to play, so it is at an even worse advantage compared to Highguard. People actually gave the game a chance because it's free to play given the 100k players on Steam at release, and they still decided it was terrible.

Concord 3 ? 🤨
I don't think it will go over that badly, but I expect it will be a pretty dismal failure. I suspect it will do about as well as XDefiant. It will have a rocky start and then get shut down in short order because it isn't making any money. Beta tests were pretty underwhelming for it and the extraction shooter market is saturated. Bungie might have enough simps pulling for them to avoid a total Concord repeat, but the game will fail. I am almost certain of it.

played a bit just now.
its just..... messy, i guess i would describe it.
nothing makes any sense at first glance, everything is too convoluted.

I spent an hour in that and that was enough for me. What we've all seen is what we get. What everyone has said in this thread... yeah.

The art style isn't as off putting as I thought it would be. I'll try it later tonight or the weekend.

So how are people feeling about the game so far now that they got a chance to play?

I love the art style and general aesthetics, they are on point. I like the concept way more too, overall way cooler than Arc Raiders IMO. I didn't really play too much since I don't like extraction shooters (I bought Arc Raiders because people were saying even if you aren't into these games it would be the one to convert you, but it didn't)

Maybe I'd get into it at a lower price or if I could do a longer trial period at a lower price. But then cheating would be so much easier and rampant so I understand a $40 barrier of entry. It definitely has much more appeal to me compared to Arc Raiders (I love that it is first person so you can't just camp extractions without atleast exposing yourself)

I’m the opposite. 200+ hours into arc raiders. Played server slam so far for 4 hours of Marathon. It feels like a mix of Fortnite, shittier halo physics, and overall the atmosphere and sound are absolutely terribly compared to arc raiders. Level design feels un original, ai is just in the way and not actually that challenging. AI in arc raiders kills even the best players when you’re caught off guard and usually poses some threat. Much of this was already said by the gaming community last time before the game was pulled for the blatant theft it contained.

I wanted it to be the next big thing but I think arc will hold the crown, and marathon will be the next big flop in 6 months or even less. It’s a game coming to market way past its prime.

I ran the tutorial and the art style is, meh. Sometimes it is neat, other times it is just NEON in your face. I'm gonna run a few drops this weekend but it looks like I'd mostly be avoiding pvp, doing quests and wishing I had more loot storage. I wasn't a fan of Arc when I briefly tried its beta/server slam and this is the same or worse I think.

Game runs decently enough even on 5-10 year old hardware.

This might be one of the most aesthetically unpleasing games I've ever seen.

The geometry in the world seems completely illogical to the point that I question whether it was designed by humans or AI. Unless that is part of the lore, don't know and I couldn't be bothered to look into it further.

I give it 6 months from what I seen. I don't think they will give up on it right away when they don't meet their numbers.
