Love your socket 754?

I'am still happy ! , never had a hicup with 2 systems ,2 years now .1st has mobile 3400@ 2600 Ghz ,constant and 2nd has 3200 @ 2407 constant .Both have 6800 Gt's with OCZ gold,and Thermaltake 680 w power supply + DFI 250 Ultra ...can't kill them !



Also for anyone out there (have one ) one of the good ones ! ( Mobile Athlon 64 3400+ (62W) ClawHammer ) let it go cheap for a 754 brother .lol Great low v chip never used .

No I have a biostar tforce 6100. I decided to move the jumper. I have my ram @ 3.2v now and I have gotten another 20 fsb at the same timeings. Its patriot 2x1gb. This new patriot does not perform like my older 3200 1gb kit.

I get it all wired up in my rig, push the power button, all the fans spin nicely but no POST. No beep, it just sits there. Now I've got to bring it back today ( 90 minute drive ) and try and convince the store that this 550 watt POS is actually what they sold me and not my old one.

I was on the web and it seems that Antec has had a pile of troubles with their recent high efficiency offerings. If you have access to a digital voltage meter it's a good idea to check voltages on all the rails while running Prime. Gaming is an even bigger draw on your PS so check it while doing that as well.

Update: The store took their 550 watt POS back, no questions asked, and exchanged it for a TruePower 430 watt model that works great. Antec have redeemed themselves. The voltages are all within 1% to 3% on the high side under full load so I'm happy. I didn't have the heart to tell the store that their 550 watt TruePower is f*#ked. They'll find out soon enough. ;)

Thanks for the info.. I did notice when I set it to 1.65v for the cpu it fluctuates in smart guardian and cpuz all the way down to 1.58... is that normal? I don't have a multimeter hanging around. If that's the case, I wonder if it's worth it to go ahead and replace it under warranty. Hmm..

No.

My Gigabyte board does the opposite. If I set it to 1.65 volts, under full load it will automatically add on an extra +0.05 volts for a total of 1.70 volts. Some extra voltage is a good thing for stability.

It's not likely your power supply is causing your drop in volts but it could be. Find a friend with a digital volt meter and do some testing under load. I think you can only test the 12, 5.5 and 3.3 volt rails but their stability between full load and no load should give you a pretty good idea if your power supply is causing problems.

You won't be able to maximize your overclock if your CPU isn't getting a stable and consistent number of volts. Most of the crazies here on this thread, like BigMac and I :) have found that our Venice cores thrive on a steady supply of 1.70 volts.

:D Indeed. I'm running at 1.62 to 1.64 in bios but CPU-z always reports about 0.3v higher. They don't seem to mind a heavy dose of volts at all.
 
lil update on my 3400+ venice. at 1.65v it will do 2.7. Prime95 fails at 2.8 in 3 minutes, 2.7 ran for about a half and hour so i called it good.

1.7 is what it takes? did i read that right? will try that later. i get 40c on full load with 1.65v @2.7, so temps are no concern of mine.

this is with a $35 biostar tforce mobo. :) open box + free shipping at newegg. :D

ram is G.skilll that is rated at 3-4-4-8 DDR500. havent pushed it too much. does DDR500 just fine at those timings and 2.8v.

Yeah - you read that right - 1.7 is very do-able with these little pups. Mine isn't Prime stable for long periods either but it games fine at 2.75 (250x11) for extended periods with ram running at 275 mhz! (DDR433 divider). It really rocks. I can get 2.8 but it bombs after about 1/2 hour - 45 mins. of gaming. Perhaps if I loosened up the ram timings a bit and shot it 1.7v it would be able to handle it but I figure 2.75 is plenty @ only 1.64v and temps in the upper 40's.
 
love my $70+tax combo of 3000+ with ECS mb. Running 250x10 24/7, 1.5v. Tried
higher FSB but I think the mb is holding back. Anyway very happy for such a cheap
combo.

Does your ECS mobo allow more volts? These Venice core chips aren't truly happy until they're getting at least 1.65 volts.

1.70 volts is even better!
 
Yes, but is that high of a voltage safe? I forget what the "safe" volts on a Venice are, but 1.7vCore seems a tad high.
 
These skt 754 Venices can take the voltage. I'm running mine at 250x11 @ 1.62 v in bios(1.632V in CPU-Z). It seems to have settled in to this sweet spot. I tried 256x11 (2.816) last night at 1.7v but it wouldn't pass Superpi. Ram voltage was at 3.1v and I backed off the DDR433 divider to the DDR400 divider but still left the timings tight (as seen in sig). It booted ok and cruised the internet but wouldn't do any kind of "heavy lifting." I guess I could try the DDR333 divider and get my ram back down to around 210 mhz but this stuff runs so fast I really don't see the need. I figure its not worth the effort to get to 2.8+ if I have to loosen the ram timings to 2.5-3-3-8, run a slow divider and run the cpu at 1.7+v. Some will go there but mine won't so 2.75 ghz out of mine will have to suffice. It will Superpi in the low 33 sec. range and SiSandra scores show I'm straddling the FX-57 in ALU/FPU scores so its making me quite happy at the moment.

I've never had a processor of any brand fail on me even after some extreme overclocking.

My worst experience of processor self abuse was a Pentium III 450 that I wisely decided to pull the heatsink and fan off just to see. I wanted to be able to access the core with my temperature probe, aka. my thumb. I didn't think the BIOS temps looked right so I thought if I put my thumb on the core I would be able to see if it really was hot. :rolleyes:

I learned my first lesson in stupidity that day and almost lost a layer or two of skin. Temps shot up quickly and the BIOS reported a hair or two over 100 C before I was able to pull the plug! I don't know why but this abused processor is still in service today and working fine.

The single core Venice chips seem quite happy at 1.70 volts. I've gone even higher and abused one with Prime at full volts without incident. The number to keep an eye on is the core temperature of the CPU. I finally got SpeedFan working properly and CoreTemp is another program that tells you what you need to know. My computer is very stable when I keep the core below 60 C while running Prime.

If you have a dual core processor then you will have to use less volts or better cooling to keep both your cores under 60C. The single core Venice chips put out less heat compared to the dual core processors so they seem to run fine with a little more voltage.
 
Grr, I'm so close to a 10k 3DMark 05 score I can smell it!

I did the 1.4v voltage mod (I've got my clocks up to 615 Core, 800 Mem) on my 7900GT, and I just pulled out 9700 Points. :eek:

The Zalman 700Cu I have on my 7900GT can't take much more heat (load temps are up to 60c with the fan running full blast), so 1.4v is about as high as I want to go on my video cards voltage...any suggestions on where I can eek out 300 more points from?
 
Well, if you don't have water cooling that may be the answer. Sorry, other than that I got nothing. Nice 05 score though, especially for a skt 754 setup. *thumbs up*

Are you using all the standard tricks yet?

Turn off every useless program running in the background including your antivirus. Do a CTRL+ALT+DEL and bring up Task Manager and turn off as many Processes as possible. Start up 3DMark and right click on the 3DMark process and set the priority to Realtime.

Are there any extra MHz left in that s754 chip of yours? Crank up the voltage and use ClockGen for a little boost after you get up into Windows.

You can also use A64 Tweaker and play around with memory timings. Send me a PM and I'll send you a tool tomorrow that might help you get the last percent out of your system.

BTW, if you don't make it, 9700 is nothing to be ashamed of. :cool:

I forgot to mention, that score was with my processor at 2.5GHz (250x10) with my ram running 1:1 (250MHz or DDR 500). I can do 2.6GHz on 1.6v, but my score takes a nosedive because I can't figure out a way to keep my RAM at around 250MHz (3DMark is bandwidth hungry).

I've got multi's up to 12x, up to 400MHz on my FSB, and all the standard RAM dividers to work with, any ideas?

Yea, the fact that I'm running 3/3/3/8 might be having a slight impact on my score. Does anyone happen to remember the URL for that RAM timing calculator or at least the formula so I can try it myself?

I wimped out at 2695 MHz but my Athlon 3000 survived a 3DMark05 run. I thought my ATI X800XT was reasonably quick but 4864 3DMarks doesn't quite compare to what an overclocked 7900GT can do.

The core temperature stayed mostly between 60C and 62C at 1.712 volts with the case closed.

Update: Just noticed that my AA / AF was at 6X / 16X for the above run. Once I set that back to default there should be a few more 3DMarks to add to the above score. Maybe tomorrow when it cools down!
 
I've tinkered with it and the best I can do is RAM at DDR512 and my CPU at 2.6GHz.

Lets see what 3DMark has to say to that :D
 
I've tweaked as much as I can out of my hardware, and I managed a score of 9952 on a suicide run :eek:

Sooooo close, I must have another 48 points somewhere.

Clock speeds on my video card give major results, the suicide run was at 632 Core and 836 Mem. I know the 7900GT can probobly do 700MHz, but I'm afraid to add any more voltage (stock is 1.2v and I'm allready at 1.4v) and there's no way the heatsink I have on it (Zalman vf700Cu) can handle any more heat load.

In any case, unless somone out there is running a pair of 7900GX2's in SLI somewhere, I have THE HIGHEST SCORING socket 754 system on Earth :D

Edit: just checked, I'm also the number 216 on the list of highest scoring system on all of [H]ard|Forums!

Sorry to burst your bubble. I have a 754 + X1900XTX with which i got between 11,000 and 12,000. Also, someone on these forums has SLI 7800GT's on 754, he might have both of us beat.

Of couse, you want proof, right? Well my x1900xtx is in RMA... so... :(

Edit: BTW, at 1.75v, my venice still wont do 2.8. Will try 1.8v tonight. ;)

lol, well that was a short lived victory :p

Maybe I will add that extra 0.05v and see where it gets me, if I can reach 700MHz I might get into 11K territory :D

BTW, two 7800GT's have a hard time reaching 10K, so I'm probobly matching him.
 
The secret to a good 3DMark run is cool air. It's still too damn hot out so I had to head to the basement today. By turning off AA and AF I managed to get my score looking a little more respectable.

It ran 6024 and then 6009 with Speed Fan on. The CPU temperature downstairs is about 9C cooler than upstairs today under full load.

By overclocking my ATI AIW X800XT to X800XT PE specs ( 520 MHz core / 560 MHz memory ) and by running my Athlon 3000 wide open I got this:

Not as fast as you PCI-E guys but not that bad for an old s754 AGP system. :)

Are there any other s754 Athlon's out there that are 3DMark stable at 2806 MHz on air?

I think we’re sitting on the next Socket A here folks. As long as you can go with one core, socket 754 should be good...

What I'm wondering is how Conroe is getting such massive 3DMark bumps when 3DMark 05 doesn’t count CPU scores...is it the memory bandwidth?

Thanks. I like putting things in perspective.

Those with deep pockets can pick up an FX-60, 2 GB of OCZ Platinum RAM and a 7600GT graphics card like X-Bit labs did.

Not much difference between that and what an old s754 can do with an old X800XT AGP card. :)

Maybe next year I'll upgrade to a PCI-E s754 motherboard.

05 is still cpu dependent, even though its not as big as say 01 or 06. 03 is REALLY cpu independent, you can pretty much have anything, and youll do fine.

ok guys, I'm trying to sell the A8N-SLI from the microcenter deal but I fear my asking price is to high

I figured there would be some demand for a brand new 939 mobo at a sweet price but I guess not. I might get "stuck" with this motherboard and be "forced" to "upgrade"

Too many quotes in that sentence but such is life.

I am still pissed there were no X2s for Socket 754. I never heard back from the folks who were supposed to run an X2 on Socket 939 in single-channel mode and share the performance hit.
 
It has to do with me giving my fellow 754ers a swing at some hardware...special pricing for any current member of the s754 club, as you see im in the top 5 or so...thats what it has to dow ith s754...

Hehe, totaly, we've got s754 processors beting AM2 processors SuperPi times :D

They need about DDR2 800 to catch back up, there must be latancy issues on the slower speed RAM (like DDR2 667).

I agree perfectly.. Matter of fact, I'm ordering a Epox 8npa motherboard and a 7600GT / X850XT by the weekend while keeping my beloved Venice 3000+ @ 2.6.

I will jump on the new plateform only when we get DX10 video cards, DDR3 and a clearer view of the Intel/AMD fight...
