Love your socket 754?

Btw, I'm still chugging along on an old Abit KV8 (non-pro), Newcastle 2800+ @2.369GHz (stock cooler).

this is exactly what my wife has in here machine (except, it's a KV8-Pro). It's my old rig, so it also has 2GB DDR400, an nVidia 6800 Ultra, and an Audigy2 ZS in it. And she uses it for nothing more than Facebook and playing an old DOS game called Theme Hospital.

I've had some conversations with a guy over on the Extreme Overclockers forum about putting a Turion in my mobo. He got the 1.8 ghz cpu (ML-34 I think) and has gotten it to 2.65ghz on nearly stock voltage. His Corsair Value Select ram seems to be holding him back,
That got me to thinking about making the swap myself. It seems that if your skt 754 mobo supports the 90nm E stepping Venice cpu's it will support the 90nm Lancaster Turions - so I ordered a Turion ML-40 (2.2 ghz, 1 mb L2 cache) cpu today from Starmicro for $59 + tax! That's a great price considering everyone else wants over $100 for one of these things. I also scored a hsf that's specifically designed for the Turion-in-desktop situation. Its by Thermaltake and is the CL-P0280. Its an all aluminum hsf. I wanted the CL-P0312 which has the copper bottom but it seems its not available here in the states. You can see the Cl-P0280 here: http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/2005/coolers/itbu/cl-p0280/cl-p0280.htm
The great thing about it is that its fairly inexpensive (a little over $15 including shipping from ComputerGate) and clips on so I won't have to take my system apart to install the hsf. I should have the parts next week and hopefully will be reporting oc's by next Saturday. I'm hoping that the 11x multi will allow for some really good oc results.

Yes, 35W - and the cpu's max rated temp is 95C! I'll definitely be pumping some voltage into it and even if it goes to 60C under full load I won't care. I'm trying to locate a Thermaltake CL-P0312 hsf since it is for the A64 Mobile cpu and has a copper bottom and a higher thermal rating than the CL-P0280 that I ordered. It seems its only available in the U.K. I'm hoping I can get one cheaply and that it can be sent here. If so, I will be even more optimistic about getting to 3 ghz.

Just curious. Why do I rarely see mention of the DFI NF4x in here? Is there something bad about that board in comparison to the Abit NV8 or MSI K8N-Neo3 H?

I had the DFI NF4X for about a year. I had excellent results with it, ended up being very glad the store was out of stock when I went to get the Asus board that day. I overclocked my Sempron 3100+ from 1.8 to 2.7Ghz (300x9 at 1.485V, no issues). Only had a few lockups during the summer months due to heat. Once I replaced my older Zalman cooler with a Scythe Mine everything was great again.

The gear has been sitting around for a while now, since I went to a Intel platform again. I am going to give it to a friend of mine who doesn't have the money to upgrade his old 1.4 Thunderbird/Radeon 9700 system, he's hoping to play a bit of Half Life 2.

My only complaint was the fan on the chipset cooler. It got to be loud and annoying, ended up unplugging it.

Hey frusciant thanks for the link. I had not seen any oc'ing links on the ML series but decided that since it was a low wattage cpu it would be worth a try - especially for only $64.40 from Starmicro (www.starmicro.net) . Everywhere else I looked it was well over $150. I have excellent ram that can run up to 275 mhz and with the 11x multi and up to 1.7v available I figure to get some decent results. I'll be disappointed if I don't get at least 2.8ghz out of it. I'll keep you all posted. I should have some preliminary results by next Saturday.

Just a note: I have been chatting with a guy on another forum and he has a HL-34 (1.8 ghz) Turion that he has oc'd to 2.4 ghz. It seems his ram is holding him back (Corsair Value Select) or else he'd be getting better results. I'd say a 600 mhz oc isn't too bad. This has me encouraged since I have extremely good ram. If I can get an 800 mhz oc I'll be at 3.0 ghz. Man, I hope this one oc's well...

hi
i just have a question, i got a msi k8n neo platinum board from ebay, the guy told me that the bios wasnt updated, now im buying a venice 3200, i just want to know if it will boot fine, or i need a newer bios, so maybe i need to buy and old cheap semprom .
thanks

I finally built a new box. Friend had a spare C2D board from an RMA nightmare of some sort, so I have the same board as him - a non-overclockable Intel 965 board.

C2D E4500 was $120 shipped, board was free, DDR2 was $30AR, new case was $25 AR. I did need to spring for a new HDD since the Intel board only has 2 IDE ports (used for DVD burners) but I needed space anyway - I was running on a $20 AR 80GB and a $30 AR 160GB.

I may move my 754 hardware over to my HTPC WIP. Dunno yet.

My Gigabyte K8N-E kept resetting my RAM multiplier to auto for some reason...so I kept ending up with my HyperX running at 450+ mhz and I think it corrupted some Windows files. I didn't want to reinstall Windows until I did the upgrade...

I stayed on the 754 socket for 3 years. My newegg account says I bought my original Newcastle on January 2005 for $129... and my original refurbished 754 board - a Gigabyte GA-K8N PRO - for $29.

Apparently I bought my 1.1ghz T-bird for $35 in Feb 2003, and I had an 1800+ system somewhere between 2003 and 2005. So I stayed on 754 longer longer than any other socket before it...except maybe Socket A since I can't remember when I bought my 750mhz socket A (2001?). I'll miss it! And it is WEIRD to have an Intel box - I've never had anything except an AMD.

Just flash to the latest bios and you should have no problems running the Venice.

That's ok - everybody is entitled to making mistakes :p (j/k - the Intels look mighty strong).
I'm still rocking the old reliable since I don't do any heavy duty gaming. I still like HL Deathmatch every once in a while. Need to pick up HL2 Episode 2 but I already have HL2 so I don't want to spend $50 for the Orange Box and get it again. Dumb move Valve. Just give me HL2 Episode 2 and nothing else and I'll be happy.
My work system is the orig. skt 754 setup I built back in summer of '04. Back then I paid a little over $300 for the 3400+ Clawhammer cpu and $400 for the AGP Visiontek X800Pro video card. Its still chugging along but I replaced the 3400+ Clawhammer with a 3700+ Clawhammer and oc'd it to 2.6 ghz. Its still chugging along with the Raidmax case and 420w psu. It runs Acad R2004 just fine and with a ram upgrade Acad 2008 is next up. I won't upgrade until I have to.
My 3400+ Venices at work and at home do 2.7 easily but I'm pumped up about the Turion ML-40. Hopefully it will surpass them. We'll see soon enough.
EDIT: 02/06/08
Delivery of the hsf (from Computergate.com) for the Turion is scheduled for Monday 2/11/08. Not gonna have it in time to mess with it this weekend. Oh well. Starmicro has been slow to ship the cpu as well. Newegg they ain't! Hopefully the old adage "good things come to them that wait" will be true in this case.

I put together a turion rig for my 14 year old and it went to 3.0 effortlessly on that exotic (hard to source stateside) hsf. Let us know how it goes.

Hey Shottglass - what do those hsf's go for over there in U.S. currency? I've tried to find out if someone will sell me one but I get no answers. Perhaps we could work out a deal if its not too prohibitive? I've got its little brother on the way (Thermaltake CL-P0280) which is made for the Turion but if it runs too hot I'm going to be in the market for the CL-P0312.
BTW which Turion model did you take to 3.0 ghz? Now you've got me beside myself waiting for this thing to get here.
Turion update:
I was told by Starmicro thatr they were temporarily out of stock but they got them in Thursday and mine will be shipped Monday (fingers crossed). I saw they have the ML-34 (1.8 ghz) for $15!!!! and the ML-37 (2.0 ghz) for $42. I want the ML-40 for the 11x multiplier but may opt for an ML-34 as well just because its so darn cheap!

I found the cl-p0312 on the big auction site that won't go named. Guy was in Indiana and his build was flawed by the mobo not speaking to his turion. Sold me the hs for like 17$ used for a few hours while it wouldn't boot. He got it from oc uk or some euro site. I never found one retail stateside, but the Thermaltake site had them in thier store back in the day i think. I just lucked out on E-*** that time around. The Turion I have is the 4000 @ 2.6. It goes to 2.8 with no effort and 3 rather quick with a little ram loosening. Let me see if I can find that little lid adapter thermaltake was offering too.

https://shop.msicomputer.com/App/StoreFront/ProductDetail.aspx?ID=1021

I was gonna get one of these "lids" for that little Turri if I hadn't scored that cl-p0312 on the cheep. I think this little msi gem gives you most of the usual S754 cooling options, check the heights and thickness ect.

Sweet - thanks for the link. I'll definitely be getting one of these if the CL-P0280 isn't quite up to the task. From your 1st post I thought you were in the UK - doh! I could get the pad and reuse the hsf I currently have - its a good one.

Hey folks, just dropping in to say hi. Got my S754 setup in January of '04 and it's been running strong since. Some mild updates to it in the interim four years...3000+ Newcastle to 3200+ Venice, and GeForce4 Ti 4200 to 6600GT. It's been a 64-bit Linux setup almost its entire life, but the odd dual-boot into Windows for gaming..

Anyways, looking at a new X2 5000 BE setup to piece together soon. Hoping to be able to get as much usefulness out of that rig as my current one. It'll be a sad day leaving S754 land.

Hey atari - glad you stopped by. I know what you mean. The old skt 754 setup has been very good to me too. The 5000 BE's look so tempting though.

Shottglass - Yeah, when you said it was a 2.6 I knew it was a mobile Athlon. Those thinga are amazing from what I have heard. The Turions replaced them. I'm hoping the Lancaster core will run as well as the Newarks did. I'm on another forum and one of the guys over there has taken his ML-34 (1.8 ghz ) to 2.5+ so the potential seems to be there. I should have my ML-40 (2.2 ghz) next week sometime. The CL-P0280 hsf is due in on Monday. Next week and beyond should prove to be quite interesting...

Yeah, that should go well, I see the ML-40 has the bigger L-2 cache so once you stretch it's legs it should have the torque as well as the speed.

Update:
My 10% AI overclock resulted in an error message during boot after 2 wks in this mode. So it might mean i have to do the overclock the manual way! Any good guides out there? is it like oc'ing intel? Do i decrease the memory speed?

Standby in XP no longer works. PC goes to standby mode but then turns back on. It might be this AMD power meter I have loaded. It could also be the dwl-132 usb wireless adaptor.

S3 is already enabled in bios. Quick test is that standby works in Kubuntu (although the wireless adaptor isn't yet installed/functional).

Much as I loved my S-754 setups, I just sold off my last one :( (Foxconn 6100K8MB, A64 Venice 3000+ @ 2.5GHz). Fare thee well.

well I don't think I could fetch enough cash to justify selling my 754 rigs.. good school pc's for my kids. i thought I would need to upgrade by now, but I can do BF2 and COD4 pretty maxed so... pllphhpt... and Crysis kinda sucked for me so... 754 till the Nehalem vs 45 phenom dust settles at least....

Well, I tried a Turion ML-40 in my Abit NV8 mobo and it didn't work out. The cpu is rated at 200x11 @ 1.35v but in my system would boot default at 200x4 @ 1.0v. After messing with it a bit I discovered it could go to 230x9 @ 1.2v but no more. I'm going to try it at work in an ECS nForce4 mobo and an ASUS KV8 mobo. Maybe I'll have better luck there. I hope so or this thing and the Thermaltake CL-P0280 fan I got for it are going the way of ebay.

My love for 754 isn't lost just yet. I recent tried AI o/c 10% but it failed after a few weeks. I noticed my memory was AUTO voltage, at 2.5V, but on the OCZ site for Premier memory, the voltage should be 2.6V. I've upped that and will see if my OC will hold. Am hoping for that sweet 200MHz o/c...for that extra kick...whilst loading web pages :)

You can probably go as high as 2.8v if need be but be careful. Check your timings too. If they are just a smidgen too tight it will cause crashes. Try 2.5-3-3-8. Don't forget to put HTT (Hypertransport bus) back to 3X (600 mhz) too.

My PC defaulted to 2.5V and i think 166Mhz memory speed! I've set it to 2.6V and 400MHz. Will I notice any performance improvement (stock)? As for overclocking, I got a crash at startup with the 2.6v and auto timings. 2.5-3-3-8 is what I have now. 1T. I let the mobo set the memory speed to whatever it needed (333 I think). My HTT is still at 4x (default) so that might be why it's crashing. It's been ages but does 3x vs 4x affect the cool n' quiet?

I don't believe the HTT speed will affect the Cool'N'Quiet but the C'n'Q can sometimes affect the overclock. It has been recommended that C'n'Q should be turned off when overclocking. You should set to 3x HTT if you are trying for a 10% overclock as you are exceeding the HTT bus speed and this can sometimes cause instability. A 2.2 ghz cpu oc'd 10% will cause the HTT bus speed to run at 880 mhz at 4x which is 80 mhz over the 800 mhz limit. You may find this crashes the system so go back to the 3x multiplier for a HTT bus speed of 660 mhz and you'll be fine.
As for the DDR400 vs DDR333 in stock mode - you probably won't notice any difference is performance but it makes a bit of a difference when overclocking, at least I seem to notice the system being a bit more responsive anyway. Maybe it just psychological :)

Thanks, BMA. I'm going to leave CnQ only because power savings is still important to me. If I have to have stock + CNQ so be it but an OC + CnQ would be very nice :) I'll try an HTT 3x. Should I set DDR to 400 or let the motherboard decide?

Wow. I am shocked and amazed there can be over 4000 posts about people who enjoy(ed) their S754 setups. I only had my S754 for about 2 months before I went to a 939 and I never looked back.

my file server is still running the following mobo/cpu/ram:

Gigabyte K8NS-PRO mobo
3200 Venice
1gb (2 x 512) of Kingston Value Select DDR400 ram!

Ive also got an Abit KU8 mobo that i picked up at a comp shop thinking it was a 478 mobo lol....got it for $20 so im not complaining.....problem is...i dont have another 754 CPU to put on that one!

one day ill get one to put on it and it will run happily till it quits :) (same goes for the file server!)

Hey eugene - the reason I stuck with s754 is cause I'm cheap :) and it works great for what I do. I guess I just can't see upgrading just yet since I'm not a heavy user.

Me, I'd go for the DDR400 setting myself.

Anyone use a s754 with Windows Home Server? Just wondering how it works for you. I'm thinking of using one of those Newegg s754 3200+/mATX boards for a cheap server.

Just picked up a new A64 754 cpu+mobo to stream video/music to other PCs/360s around the house. If it's too slow for that, then there's always folding.

939 only brought dual-channel support to the table - very minor - and eventually dual core support. By the time I decided to go dual-core, the C2Ds became a more price efficient choice.
