Love your socket 754?

yah so with penryn being delayed and all i figured i'd inject a few months of extra life into my system

just ordered:

an unused e6 3200+ venice off ebay for $24 (!)
2gb of gskill pc3200 off newegg - $100
xfx 7600gt extreme 256mb off ebay - $60

and a CM Centurian5 case off newegg, because i also realized that with the hardly used chaintech sk8t800 s754 mobo sitting in my closest i can move all my current components into another system to replace my p4 2.4ghz linux box

so i'm representing 754 hardcore now, w00t! 754 fo life baby :p

in retrospect i could've picked up a 939 board, ddr2 mem, and an x2 for $100 or so more, but im guilty enough as is :D

Nice! Keep us posted on the rebuild and let us know how it performs.

It was kinda a dead-end socket though. You got dual core and dual channel RAM with 939, then a little while later AMD dumps it and releases a long term socket (AM2); dual channel doesn't help much over s754, and now it's more worth it to jump directly to AM2 for dual core because it'll support AM2+ and AM3 chips without a motherboard change.

s754 has some life left in it yet, it more than enough to run a media center PC or home file server, and can still handle just about all recent games without too much trouble. UT3 engine games (Bioshock, UT3, Gears of War) are perfectly playable but you can tell they're boarder-lining on a CPU limitation due to a lack of dual core (Guitar Hero III suffers from small random hitches on single core processors, though they usually don't cause much of a problem).

You begin running into the big problems with large free-roam games like Oblivion and Crysis. DX9 has a rather harsh unique render call limit (I think it's somewhere around 800 unique objects being drawn at once, though you can cheat a little and clone an object without it adding to the count), as long as you're below that number, your CPU has just about no impact on framerates. After you pass that number of unique objects, your processors has more and more of an effect on performance and will begin choking back framerates. A single core Athlon 64 @ 2.4GHz will choke (sub-30FPS) at about 2500 calls per frame, Crysis regularly sends over 5000 calls per frame (which is why you see 8 to 12 minimum FPS without a second core no matter how good your video card is).

DX10 makes this limit a LOT higher, so technically, these newer games /should/ perform more admirably under DX10 with single core processors...but I have a feeling the extra overhead from Vista might cancel that out for the most part.

Hahhhaaa just fired up my Newcastle DH7-CG 1800mhz on a Msi Neo3 with a BFG 6800oc..LE....My 6000+ is awaiting some new Nvidia hardware:D So i thought id dust this baby off after not using her for two years...just put some MX-II under the hood and Checked the battery and gonna do some 3Dmark06 for kicks....:p

I am selling my 3400+ Venice 754 on ebay right now. Will be interesting to see how much it ends up going for.

I had to revive my old skt754 rig my. Since my ABIT IP35 PRO bit the dust a few days ago. I slapped in my 8800GTS, 500Gig SATA drive & my X-fi. The poor little Sempron holds it back so much =P. Did order a 2 gig kit today to help it a bit. Gonna hunt down a AMD 64 3400+ for it as well. Will give it to my GF =),

Sweet. Its hard to find the 3400+ Venice cpu's but they turn up on ebay every now and then. I've seen some of them at some etailers and they want over $200 for them - yeah right!
It looks like you are in luck. I just checked ebay and there is a 3400+ Venice available. End date for bidding is Jan 5. Go here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/AMD-ATHLON-64-3...ryZ80139QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem to check it out
DL you can get the 3200+ real cheap on ebay and oc just about as far as the 3400+. Both will do 2.6 to 2.7 rather easily. I've even got a 3000+ Venice that will go to 2.7, too.

I've been out the AMD game since my 3700+ San Diego. I'm going bonkers doing research on all of the options available. I see these 1mb cache mobile AMD 64's as well. I may go the 3200+ route. Really looking into these mobile ones as well. Team Fortress 2 seems to be effected by the limited cache my Sempron. Game has a very bad stuttering effect :). That's the conclusion I came to anyways after doing research. My GF only plays Second Life & the Sims 2. Those run fine. Just want to make sure I have this rig at its best before I hand it off to her. Waiting for my IP35 Pro through RMA.

I hope this hasn't been asked before but there's just too many pages to read through. I have a s754 3000+ and I'd like to use it to build another rig. Where can I get a good mobo to go with it and are there any recommended brands?
Also, I'm curious how you can tell which 'core' you have- Venice, Newcastle, etc. , and which ones are "better" than the others.
EDIT- is this a good deal? Soyo SY-K8usa

I've had really good success with the Abit NV8. There is one on ebay right now
http://cgi.ebay.com/Abit-NV8-Socket...ryZ99244QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
or you can go with the MSI listed here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-MSI-K8N-Neo...ryZ99244QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

What you want is a mobo with the nForce4 chipset but you'll have to go with a PCI-e video card. Newegg has X1600/1650 ATI chipset cards for less than $50 which is an incredible buy.

As for the cpu make sure you get a Venice cpu. They overclock best and run cooler than the others. You can find 3200+ Venices on ebay all day long for around $32 + shipping. I've had a 3200+ that would hit 2.7 ghz but I was pushing it hard. 2.65 is easliy obtainable - just know that if you want to push them hard you'll need a good hsf because they like lots of voltage (1.6v-1.7v). I run mine at 1.66v with no problems.

If you get one drop me a line. I'd be glad to help you oc it.

Thanks for all the tips! I've got a 3000+ chip right now(not sure what 'core' it is) that I'm gonna use. Not sure if I want to oc it or not(it's gonna be my daughter's computer), but I'm sure I will be tinkering with it anyway ;) . I actually had this chip running at around 2.2 ghz in my previous rig, then I up'd to a 3200+ chip.
Do the boards you listed allow overclocking? If so, I'll definitely give you a holler when it comes time :D .

The Abit board is a very nice overclocker - lots of nice features. The MSI would probably do just as well but I've not used it. I actually bought that mobo as a replacement for another system I have but instead I gave it to my brother for Christmas.
The Abit board has great cpu and ram voltage options. I'd recommend it just because I've been running it in my home system for 2.5 years now.

As long as the pc is fulfilling all of your needs you're golden. I'm still rockin' the s754 myself and probably will for at least another year. Between school and work there's not much time left to upgrade my PCs.

After finals this week I'm going to try and overclock my 3200+ even further and possibly my 7800gs.

I caved and got an Intel C2D E6750. It flies, mainly because of the 8800GT. My S754 is still my secondary system. I'm looking at overclocking it because it has been running at stock for the last 2 years.

Just curious. Why do I rarely see mention of the DFI NF4x in here? Is there something bad about that board in comparison to the Abit NV8 or MSI K8N-Neo3 H?

Btw, I'm still chugging along on an old Abit KV8 (non-pro), Newcastle 2800+ @2.369GHz (stock cooler).

I loved my 754 for a while, now I sadly am parting w/ it and the 3200+ that came w/ it (offers are nice), but it was a great little chip.

Cool. Keep us posted on how its going and let us know if you need any help.

With Bios 1008 on the K8N-E, AI overclocking even at 1% would give me a BSOD. This was maybe 2 yrs ago. So I installed 1011, and now the AI overclock of 5% seems to be ok (did no stress testing yet). I'm trying 10% now. I can feel the extra 'kick' for this single core!

That's next.
Idle CPU fan is 1300 @ 38C.

I noticed that the memory is clocked down to DDR366 @ 183MHz.Not sure if the other BIOSes made OCing easier.

the only bad thing about this bios is that my stand-by doesn't work. It'll go to sleep mode then start up again.

i had that board, just gave it to my bro so he could upgrade to pci-e... it was a good stable board...but i didnt have a good chip and i couldnt really oc it much to see what the board would do

I've never used a DFI as I was intimidated by all their oc options! I understand they are quite good mobos and in talking with others using them it always seemed they could oc as fast or faster than my Abit NV8 but with less volts on the cpu. From my understanding they are good mobos but they do require a good bit more patience and knowledge to get the most out of them.

Well, finally ordered all the parts to put together my other s754 system. Here's what I wound up buying:
s754 3000+(already had this), MSI K8N Neo3H mobo, Biostar GeForce 7300GS 512 mb 64-bit PCI-E x16 video, Patriot 1gb DDR 400 RAM, and a Thermaltake cpu fan. I just realized the vid card was a 64-bit though. Should that be a problem with this setup?

So I used the AI overclock +10% and I have not had any crashes yet! Idle is 35 and load is 45C. This is with Q-Fan and CnQ enabled. The K8N-E/754 is still a champ, it seems.

Glad to hear you've had success with the AI. Did you do anything differently (new bios, etc) or just try it at a new setting?

I upgraded to the latest bios (1011) to get the overclock working. I think this bios smartly underclocked the memory.

The issue I have with this bios is that my stand-by does not work any more. I think it's bios related (when i upgraded, it stopped working).

i love it but i think i have to upgrade it, because i couldnt play CS:S on my 24" LCD its too laggish... i guess i might upgrade to intel even though im a big amd fan..

hi
im new , i already have an ebay msi k8n neo platinum mobo and im searching for the best cpu, i m beteween a turion (dont remember the name but it runs at 2.4 and have 1 mb of cache), an athlon mobile 4000 , an athlon 64 3700 clawhammer or an athlon 3400 venice.
wich one is the best?
also the mobile cpus are compatible with my mobo? (i think the turion is compatible but i dont know about the athlon)
thanks

From my experience the 3400+ Venice is a fine overclocker and should do 2.7 easily. The 4000 mobile is a great cpu as well but I do not know if it is suppoerted by your mobo. The 3700+ Clawhammer is a fine cpu but its a stretch to get it to 2.6 or beyond and it runs a good bit hotter than the Venice due to its 130nm architecture which requires 1.5v as the base voltage as opposed to the Venice's 90nm architecture which runs on 1.4v for its base voltage. I have (2) 3400+ Venices and (1) 3700+ Clawhammer and I prefer the Venices.

Enable the S3 mode in BIOS. Your stand-by will work again. ;)

K hopefully someone in the classifieds will trade my Asus K8N4--E deluxe for an Epox sli board.and finaly post my 754 rig here.

I had one of those mobos but ditched it in favor of the Abit NV8 due to the lack of cpu voltages above 1.55v which really curtailed any serious overclocking with my Venice core cpu's. The Venices like 1.6v to 1.7v and really come alive in the mid 1.6v range. It had a lot of nice overclocking features with the A64's and I would have kept it had it allowed some decent voltages. I tried every bios that Asus issued for it with no success getting over 1.55v in bios. A shame, but Asus' limitations put me onto this Abit NV8 and I couldn't be happier. Lots of bios settings for overclocking and lots of voltage options for cpu, HTT bus and ram.

dont recall how high voltage went on mine. but it wasnt needed cause i ran a mobile 3400+ clawhammer on it.my want is more towards fast ram timings 2.2.2.5 1T.going to try and get the highest OC with that mobile and my little gem, a Tuli AX480A7-F but i want the low latency.is it possible?

You'll need some very good ram. The Crucial Ballistix (DDR400 PC3200 - 2x512mb) I run is listed at 2-2-2-8. I can push it to 275 mhz at 2.5-2-2-8 1T in my setup.
