Love your socket 754?

Well, I just got my new 3400+ Venice from Starmicro.net for just a little over $53 including shipping and installed it in my system that has an Asus K8V mobo (AGP graphics) and 2 gb (2x1 gb) of G.Skill DDR400 ram and got it to 225x12 (2.7 ghz) @ 1.6v on the 1:1 ram divider without even trying. I've got a lot of expereince with these Venice cpu's and found that they are capable of 2.7 ghz without too much trouble. In fact I have 3 of the 3400+ Venices now and they are all capable of a minimum of 2.7 with voltages in the 1.6v range. When paired with the Crucial Ballistix ram (DDR400) they sing really well also. I've gotten a best suicide run of 31.98 sec. on the 1M SuperPi bench but for daily use all the systems are in the mid-low 33 sec. range. I must say I've always been very happy with all the skt 754 Venices (3000+, 3200+, 3400+) - much better than the Clawhammers when it comes to overclockability and they run a whole lot cooler, too.

My backup PC is an Athlon64 3700+ with an X850 Pro AGP (flashed to an X850 XT), 2GB of PC 3200 RAM, 80 GB ATA HD all nestled on a Abit NF8 motherboard. Great little PC I still use quite regularly. May be a bit out of date, but its still miles ahead of most budget retail boxes being sold today.

I can still play a newer game like Lord of the Rings Online at 1280x1024 on medium settings with it.

Just built from spare parts - A64 Sempron 2800+ E6 stepping on a TForce 6100-754, stock opteron heatsink (copper heatpipes).

It's a testbed for Fedora 9 x86_64. Pulling 2424 mhz at stock cpu voltage with crappy ram at 2.8v. Smooth as butter.

edit: now 2.5 ghz at 1.41vcore

had a socket 754 sempron 3100+ (1.8ghz) running at 3.1ghz up until a week ago on a dfi lanparty NF3 250Gb when i decided keeping it running was costing me to much in electrical bills.. so its time for me to sell off the parts.. wish i had known about this competition sooner..

That board is great for turion processors. As you can see, I'm a big fan.

hi guys
im very sad because i think i killed my little venice 3400 :(
i posted 1 month ago telling you that changing the bios battery fixed my pc, so i did an overclock about 2,8 ghz and 1.65 vcore, it was stable and everything fine, but one week ago i started to get ati2dvag .dll infinite loop errors and freezings, and suddenly my machine stop working
I have a msi k8n neo platinum board, and a d bracket 2 for diagnostic and i get that i have a bad processor initialization, i have already changed the video card the memory , the psu, and nothing, so i think my cpu is dead :(....
Now im going to buy a turion mt cpu or an athlon 64 newark 4000, i dont know , can you guys tell me which one is better for gaming and reaching lowest super pi times:p
Also, is there a way to use my venice heatspreader on my new mobile cpu, i dont know how to take out my venice heatspreader (its glued or something??) since i know mobile cpus doesnt have one.
Thanks

Go with the Newark. The Turions (ML series anyway) don't compare well with the Newarks. Thermaltake made a hsf for the mobiles in a desktop mobo (part # CL-P0312) but I've had no luck finding one. Starmicro.net has 3400+ Venices for $48 + shipping if you want to get another one.

hi
nice price for the venice, are those cpus new or used, refurbished ?
i saw a guy with a turion ml reaching almost 30 seconds on super pi 1M at 2,89 ghz,
starmicro sell the turion ml-40 for 100 bucks, if the cpus is new maybe is worth the money
I found some newarks 4000+ on ebay, starting at 110 bucks, but i dont know, they are used, and from ebay stores, so i dont know if they will last for what i need, also i dont know if a newark will run on my mobo.

thanks for the answers

The 3400+ Venices are OEM new as far as I know. I've bought all 3 of mine from Starmicro and have not been disappointed yet.
I had an ML-40 and tried it in my Abit NV-8 (nForce4 chipset), ECS (nForce4 chipset) and Asus K8V (K8T800 chipset) mobos and the best it would do was 2.58 ghz. I was very disappointed.
I have hit 2.76 - 2.8 with 3400+ Venices with a best SuperPi 1M time of 31.98 sec on a banzai run. Daily configurations return low 33 sec. times. Hitting 2.7 to 2.76 is relatively with the faster Venices (3200, 3400). The 3000+ can get there sometimes, too with enough voltage.
For my money the 3400+ seems to be the best all-round cpu for a wide range of motherboards because its compatible, overclocks well and runs cool. I just put one in my Asus K8V (replacing a 3700+ Clawhammer that topped out at 217x12) and took it to 230x12 at 1.6v right off the bat. Quite impressive, since most people seem to think the K8T800 chipset is relatively poor when it comes to overclocking.

Bought a new K8U-X of Ebay, and put on a 3100 sempy that I had to use to flash a bios on another 754 board, plus a mix of different parts, I have a full machine!!

3100 Sempron
2 X 256mb hynic pc3200
160gb 7200.7
Mx420 agp - PNY

my trusty s754 sempy is about to be relegated to file server duties. I am going to underclock it and undervolt it. It is 1.8ghz stock 1.4v. Going to set it to 800mhz (4x multi) and 1.1v for a low power file server. The problem is is that the only s754 mobo I have is a cheapy DFI board that has a Via K8M800 chipset that is not the most efficient. :(

The VIA K8M800 is much more efficient than the GeForce 6100+nForce 410 that's in my Foxconn board. This is just my perspective and I am sure you will have different results.

i have a dfi lanparty ut nf3 250Gb motherboard im trying to get rid of.. but also have a k8m800 board which i had no issues with so that board should be fine running as a fileserver..

The X800XT in my kids Newark 3.00 Ghz Fragbox gave up the ghost and I ordered an open-box 3850 from the 'egg for $100.

The card was too wide for the shuttle case so I mated it up to the Clawhammer rig. He's playing COD5 nearly maxed out on 1600x1200 with decent framerates. Inspired me to visit the old 754 stompin' grounds.

Will the shader 2.0 X800 family support COD5? I think that COD4 played on em and I thought it was a similar engine. I know the displaced X1950Pro runs em both but it is of course; 3.0

Neither the X1950 or 3850 agp cards will fit in his little shuttle but I'm loath to cripple him with a 128 bit lower end card in there no matter what shader model it is. I suppose a new case might be in order. Oh well, good to see you guys still around.

Still got my trusty ole 754 64 3200+ ,3gb PC3200 Corsair XMS, BFG 7800gs oc 256mb running WoW for my son. :) Still running strong after all this time.

I gave it to him after I got my Core2Quad setup.::D Before that we still had my old Barton 2500+ with a 6600gt and 2gb of Corsair running for him.

Not even sure if COD5 is out for the PC yet. Everything I looked at on the web was not PC based but maybe it has been ported over and I just don't know about it.
Not sure about the old X800 family of cards running it if it is out for the PC. I'm in a similar situation with my old rig. A small piece broke off my trusty VisionTek X800Pro and now its toast. Too bad, because it was a fine card. I visited ReTekDirect's store on ebay, though, and found a new X1600Pro 512 mb AGP 8X card (card only - no peripherals) for $49 (including shipping and insurance). The system is mainly used for AutoCad but I also wanted it to be able to play HL and HL2. I'll run PCMark03 to see how it compares to the old X800Pro. That old card was a beast of an overclocker - going from 475/450 (core/mem) to 570/570! It kicked out a best PCMark03 score of 13,575 or thereabouts with my old 3700+ Clawhammer in it. I've since sold the Clawhammer and installed a 3400+ Venice which oc's far, far better.
You can still find some decent deals on the old X800 line if you scrounge around. I found an X800GTO and would have loved to have grabbed it but it was a PCI-E card. Bummer, too 'cause it was only $30.

That's wierd. I've got a 3870 running on an 939 X2 and WaW is unplayable for me at just 720p :(

Gah. Both my 754 rigs just died a few months ago. Just thought I had to let someone know. :(

Bummer. I just had one go down due to a video card failure so I ordered a new X1600Pro (AGP 8X) from ebay store ReTekDirect for $49 including shipping & insurance. It should be back up and running in no time.

Not positive if this is allowed or not in this thread or not

Wondering if anyone happens to have a spare/old etc 754 (nforce3 chipset) board that is overclock friendly. I need to squeeze a little more use from my 754 (3200+ athlon 64) before I can afford a new system. My current mobo is not able to be overclocked. AGP graphics port .

Currently running

SFF MSI MPC 800k
athlon 3200+ Athlon 64 2.2Ghz
OCZ Platnum 2G DDR
XFX NVIDIA GEFORCE 7600 GT AGP 256 MB
Hitachi Deskstar SATA 7200RPM
Windows XP Pro.

I tried alot of 754 chips on my dfi nf3 board not so long ago... onair, so no great scores, but was fun to run mobiles etc anyways:D

Anyone here knows how to get the DFi nf3 250gb above 360mhz htt btw? Mine seems to stop there very often, for "no" reason. SOMETIMES I can get it higher (got a valid at 385mhz, but I forgot to lower the multi to like 5 or 6 so the cpu stopped me...), but that happens very rarely. It seems as if the chipset can go higher, but something is wrong... I only use an IDE drive, agp video card, mouse and keyboard - no extra stuff...

Aw man I'm down to 1 skt 754 board remaining, a DFI NF3.

I lost *2* 754 boards this past week ... a Chaintech VNF-3 and a Biostar TForce 6100-754. The same fate ... shut them down, never could restart them. Hopefully I'll go as peacefully :)

i just dismantled the last 754 machine in my house this weekend

i still have all the parts stored, two mobos, two cpus, some DDR, but they no longer served a real purpose (besides, i needed the case for a new Phenom II build.)

both machines were still running before dismantling though, nothing has died so far

i still have my athlon 3200+ clawhammer running on a DFI LP UT NF3 250gb @ 2.7ghz.. though i need a new psu.. this is as high as i can take it.. 2.8ghz and my psu craps out..

wow, 2.7 on a claw is excellent

i just found a screenie from my old 3400+ claw, i couldnt get the thing past 2.53 without major instability. god i loved that 3400+, it truely was an excellent chip, especially comming from a sempron 2600 :)

yeah im running an insane 1.88v for 2.7ghz.. i really want to try and break the air cooling record thats cpu-z validated.. which is 3.2ghz.. but its been on hold for about 2 months now waiting to get enough money to buy a new psu..

wow, 1.88 that is INSANE!, what kind of heatsink do you have on there?

how about just pulling the TT-TP750 out of your 6400 rig for the weekend? a 3.2+ clawhammer, man that is totally insane :p, i would love to see that

A clawhammer is such a veteran, he can take on an army of Q6600's!! Jk... I wonder if AMD will ever come back and win the warrrrrr.... "Let me see your war face!"

just as a little update, my media pc is getting converted into a fileserver, so to replace it for media duties, i am pulling my old s754 sempron out of retirement!

it will get to live in an antec nsk1480 case running ubuntu linux on the upstairs tv

Well, since this thread was brought back from the grave, I finally got rid of my 3200+ and put a nice Phenom II X2 550 machine together. I just couldn't resist seeing as my machine was about 5 years old now.
I do have all the parts still if anyone is looking for any- 3200+, 1gb memory, and mobo. All were working perfectly, just had an itch to upgrade.

Are there good links here on budget upgrade replacements for the 754 pin solution?
I did some reading on netbooks and some cpu's (i.e. CULV's) are faster than the desktop 754 I have now!

I'm thinking Wolfdale e7300 + onboard video.
Or AMD + onboard (something comparable to giving graphics from a 9600pro).

i had thermaltake big typhoon VX.. funny thing is that pos heatsink has no problem handling the 1.88v on the 3200+.. but can barely handle 3.4ghz @ 1.45v on my phenom II 940.. arg i hate that heatsink with a passion.. right now i have an Antec CP-850 that i won on a antec/newegg contest.. working on a water cooling setup for the 3200+ but running into a few issues.. even at stock speeds the core heats up so quick on boot that the radiator doesnt have time to cool the water off.. it hits the shut off temp after about 15 seconds.. cant even get into the bios to check the temps before it shuts off.. if i can get the get the boot temps down i should be able to hit 2.00v no problem.. the water cooling loop is sufficient enough for it.. its just that first 15 seconds thats killing me..

look into the 785G motherboards.. the onboard gfx on that board are comparable to the HD 3650 which is far better then the 9600pro..

I just ordered this:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor

MOBO: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail Xtreme Design w/ GPU NOS, DX10.1, DDR3 1800 OC

RAM: Crucial Ballistix 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model BL3KIT12864BN1337 - Retail

PSU: OCZ Fatal1ty Series Power Supply - 550-Watt, PCI-Express, SATA, ATX

Hard Drive: (2) Seagate Barracuda LP ST31000520AS 1TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive - OEM

HP dvd 1270i 24x Multiformat DVD Writer - Lightscribe

LG Super Multi Blue Blu-Ray Disc Rewriter & HD DVD ROM Drive - Lightscribe

I'll be putting it all in my Radimax Storm case and moving my 3400+ Venice setup into another spare case I have. This upgrade will be a work system so I don't plan to do much (if any) overclocking with it. I've still got 2 other skt 754 3400+ Venices plugging along at 2.6 ghz each. Rock solid machines.

Don't do it Bigmac!! You are like one of the last 754'ers... LoL. that should be a football or baseball team name... JK. But yeh, too bad AMD doesn't keep doing some type of 754 processors to keep our club alive. =) Weren't the 754's the first of the AMD 64 chips? Beating Intel at the time? Those were the days... correct me if i'm wrong. =)

RAM: Crucial Ballistix 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model BL3KIT12864BN1337 - Retail

you might want to change that for either a 2x1gb or a 2x2gb kit, running three sticks isnt optimal.. otherwise, nice build!

and a small club update, my 754 sempy is still in its plastic little box thingy. I ended up merging the file server / media pc machines into one, so i now have a lovely antec 300 next to my TV :)

Well, since I'm running XP I got the 3gb kit from Crucial. It is sold as a 3 pack so its not like I'm just getting 3 separate 1 gb sticks. We'll see how it does.

And don't worry, noob. I'm still rocking 2 skt 754 3400+ Venice systems - 1 where I do some contract CAD work and 1 here at home recording music from LP's. I remember getting my 1st skt 754 cpu - it was a 3400+ Clawhammer for around $325. This was in the summer of '04 when the skt 939 parts were just starting to hit the shelves. The system I have at the office I help out at is the original box from back then - it still has the Asus K8V mobo in it that I bought back then and still performs like a champ.
I'm starting a business here in Orlando that is aimed at paper to digital data archiving, paper and digital to CAD drawing conversion (raster to vector conversion), Vinyl LP, 45 and 78 as well as cassette tape to CD (or wav, wma, mp3, mp3pro) and VHS to DVD/Blu-Ray. As you can see from what I'll be doing I'm in need of a lot more power so this 3400+ Venice setup is either going into another box or I'll give the cpu to my brother to upgun his 3000+ Venice box. I'll be putting all the new guts in this Raidmax Storm case shortly. It will have 2 1TB Seagate drives, plus my 200 gb and 250gb Maxtor IDE ATA 100 drives and the CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burners as well. I won't be oc'ing the Phenom much, if at all, simply because its more than strong enough with 4 cores @ 3 ghz each to get done what I need to do. My gaming days are pretty much over so its time to get on with the business at hand. I sure do miss the good old days of crowded HL Deathmatch servers!
