If you actually tried to buy one you would notice they sell I think its 4 developer editions of the XPS 13 only one has touch.... and I would assume most people that spring for that one simply want the higher DPI screen for some reason. (not sure its important on a 13 inch screen but there it is)

Which is exactly my point. Why the hell are people that don't have a clue about touch on PCs arguing with someone like me that uses it everyday?

Because you are arguing that everyone else is as well. Like its some big uber feature that users are demanding.

First we have already covered this... Linux has as good driver support for touch as windows done. Of course like everything else there are a few Windows devices that ship with odd ball hardware where the mfg has provided Windows drivers and nothing more. Just as their are android and ios devices out there that you could mess around with and get Linux to run on because they use hardware the kernel supports.... however there are no windows drivers so win 10 is a no go. You like to forget that most 2 in 1 devices that you are worried about Linux support for don't ship with Linux, most are just x86 computers and work fine of course, some are specialised and borrow some hardware from tablet type devices and aren't going to just fire up. So what.

I don't like touch computers no and I think they will die off like 3D movies are at last starting to do. Regardless of what I personally think... Linux does support touch, and pen and all the hardware your going on about. As far as MS office handwriting software goes. As I have already said if that is really a big deal for you, hey man stay on windows clearly. In my experience it isn't a big deal for anyone using their computers to make $. Its simply not software they care about. (again if you have an example of a company using MS ink tons hey cool man... I'm sure there is one perhaps even two out there somewhere)

Linux can work for many people on the desktop but support is still a huge issue. There are more Linux games than ever but that's also true of Windows and the gap is only getting bigger. Hardware support for things like 2 in 1s which are now a big deal just really isn't there for Linux.

I never said that Linux doesn't work on 2 in 1s. To the contrary I pointed out that on a even Microsoft device, a Surface Pro 3, that all of the hardware, touch, pen and the Type Cover work under Ubuntu 17.04. I was debating how well these capabilities are supported.

Your argument as I udnerstand it boils down to.... you haven't done everything possible on a computer. So don't have an opinion about anything at all unless you have 100 hours of specific hands on experience.

By your logic if an airline pilot with 20+ years of experience flying jumbo jets gives a Cessna pilot his opinion on something... he better stifle it unless he has flown that same model Cessna.

Sometimes you can know enough about something to have an informed opinion on a subject. Hands on experience with every nuanced facet of a subject is not required for intelligent conversation. If you don't like his opinion that is fine... but he is allowed to have one. If you choose to not regard it at all that is your prerogative as an adult. Placing your fingers in your ears like a child and trying to drown him out is well just childish. Also how did VR get pulled back into this. :) lol

What haven't I touched under Linux? VR? Ink?

We have no evidence that you even successfully tried VR under Linux, I know what digital ink is and I don't believe it's a technology really going anywhere. I believe you are clutching at straws in an attempt to dump on Linux and you are failing.

I mean what am I supposed to say to that? That I'll do my best to buy a Vive setup and a 2 in 1 because Heatlesssun said so?

Why not? Because Microsoft has a phenomenal budget and employs hundreds of people whose only job is to test and refine the operating system. Linux doesn’t. Even the most widely-used distros are operated by what is essentially a group of enthusiasts operating on a shoestring budget.
It is obvious a spelling error MS canned most if not all of them at Quality Assurance. Most of the patches on MS platform are for MS application which no one in their right mind would use anyway. From this comment it is also clear that the person does not know the difference between kernel space programs and user space which makes a difference when dealing with bugs as well one will be pretty harmless to users and the other could be the next backdoor into your system (MS Word for example).

Linux is complicated. Don’t say it’s not. It is! And I’m not just talking about the layout of the desktop or where to find various settings — a new user can get up to speed on that stuff in a few days.

The most laughable thing about that comment is that some of the biggest players in the big iron IT industry finance Linux development. There is a fairly large possibility that the funding and therefore support behind Linux is actually far larger than the funding and support behind Windows.

I'm sure you checked the Linux foundation youtube channel, some of the Brian Lunduke stuff(rants and discussion about Linux). It seems that companies have a stake which will benefit them as contributing developer not to sure if it is "bankrolling" rather then an investment into their business interest, comes down to the same thing but painting it as throwing money at Linux development is the wrong picture.
 
Wow, 6 pages later and still going strong. :D Also, MS did not can most of the QA people, regardless of what peoples opinion are on the matter. Now, for some things, Linux does suck and for other things, it does not. Although I would not use the word suck, just not as useful in some circumstances. Personally though, I prefer Windows 10 as my host OS and Linux in Virtual machines off of a fast SSD. (Ubuntu boots really fast that way.)

Truth is, the best Linux installations are the ones that have the corporate backing, like Ubuntu and Fedora. They have people that are paid to build and support it and therefore, can focus on it exclusively as apposed to it just being a hobby.

Of course its not a donation... I didn't mean to make it sound like one. However they are releasing the code as per the licence agreements. Which means any other company or person can use that code. No company can take the kernel modify it do whatever with it and not share. They have all agreed to that which is pretty fantastic. It is why some less generous companies use BSD. The licence there allows companies like Apple and Sony to add and modify code anyway they want and not share back.

Considering the terms of the licence it is pretty amazing that so many big companies are hiring full time Linux development teams. Of course it is to all their benefit... its still one heck of a feat. The Linux foundation does a pretty good job of not allowing one industry or company to pull the kernel in one direction.

Well you see that is the power of Linux. Its a collaborative effort. Ubuntu Fedora suse any big name distro you want to name.... their code is not proprietary. Its all open and they upstream everything they do. X or Y distro is still using the same kernel that has those 14 thousand changes committed by intel and 9 thousand by red hat (fedora) and 4 thousand from suse ect ect. If I decide in my arch distro that I really like Suse usb studio.... well I install it. If I don't see it I'm free to add a installer script based on the git code if I like... or just plain out compile it myself and manually put things in my /shared folder or something.

I guess my only point is... even the smaller distros that have smaller dev groups (and in many cases no one paid) the quality can be just as good (and for some use cases better even) as everyone including the big guys like Suse and their 1,000 employees hand all their code out for free. Really imho sometimes projects that are not the big guys have real advantages for average users. Its why Mint is so popular. Mint doesn't have some big 100+ employee office somewhere.... they simply take the FREE ubuntu code and have added things they feel make it easier to use. Ubuntu themselves may not add some things as they need their OS to have a broader appeal. Other distros like SUSE may not incorporate some fantastic bit of Ubuntu or red hat code as they compete with them in the server space. Yet a smaller distro may well use software from all 3 because they don't play politics like that and just include what works best.

The argument that only the big distros are worth looking at sort of goes against what Linux is. Which is an OS for all things. Suse is fantastic if you want to have access to some of their more server oriented tools. Fedora is great if you also support RHEL/CENT machines somewhere... its different but of course the redhat tools are the same. However for a home user that simply wants to install and have every codec they could imagine installed by default, to have the most popular video players or specific browser installed by default.. or have packages that easily lift the best of the best software from all the majors. For those users there is nothing wrong with the smaller projects like Mint or Arch (and its user friendly install distros manjaro and antergos) or Solus (it wasn't my cup... but many people swear by it and they are starting to add full time paid developers). The big guys are never bad options but they are hardly the only good options.

I'm sorry, but this is just not true at all.

Yes Mint is a fork of Ubuntu, but to say they've only made some modifications isn't doing their work justice. They've created their own desktop environment, run their own software repo's that they perform regression testing on, make modifications to the kernel, and they've developed tools and utilities to make using linux easier for average users. That's a LOT of work, and frankly a lot of work that Ubuntu used to do when they were focused on being user friendly, that is now picked up by the Mint team.

Slackware still exists, and has quite the following.

Ubuntu itself is built on Debian.

If anything Redhat and Cent are built on the advancements made in Fedora considering it's essentially the "bleeding edge" testing ground for them.

Finally, what about Arch? It's a great distro that's quickly becoming one of the most widely used, and it doesn't have some big corporation funding its development. Your argument has some merit, but the situation isn't near as cut and dry as you make it out to be. At the end of the day linux is the largest community driven software project ever, and yes some of the commits made into its codebase come from corporations. That's fine, and I personally don't have an issue with that. What I do have an issue with is the assertion that linux wouldn't exist without corporate backing. That is just an absurd statement made with no basis in reality.

Well Fedora/centos its all red hat but anyway....

My point is Linux distros are built to fit NEEDS. They are all based on the same code... if Debian adds something cool, Ubuntu picks it up, Mint picks it up. At the end of the day all 3 have different strengths as you would put it. They are all however based for the most part on the same code. Debian is great... Ubuntu has added to it. Is it better or worse then debian vanilla ? Mint has added to Ubuntu is it better or worse ? It depends on your use. If your use is first time Linux user who has no idea what I'm doing... well Ubuntu is debian but easier... and mint is ubuntu but easier. If you have been using linux longer then the popular DEs have existed and your looking to build a headless server I am going to bet Mint isn't your first choice.

You have made a blanket statement that everyone should use the core big business distros because they are the best. Which simply isn't true. Your use is what matters, and the "smaller" distros that as you claim have no one working on them is just a silly argument if you understand how Linux is developed. Mint has no less development $ spent on it then Ubuntu. Manjaro has no less development money spent on it then Arch. If you need a penetration testing distro Kali has no less development put into then ubuntu, as it uses an ubuntu base. Or if you want to get more obsure perhaps ClearOS is the perfect choice for your small business server its based on fedora still it may be a great choice for a specific case.

My point is distributions share development. (not just distros based on x or y either... if one comes up with enhancements for something like say apparmor it is going to end up in all the distros) The argument that X or Y corporate (big company) backed distro is best because it has backing is silly. All that code is shared, and those distros are in many ways scatter shot distros trying to be good at everything but best at nothing really. If you have specific uses (and yes basic "home" style use is its own thing) a targeted distro put together by a handful of people looking to make a distro great at a specific thing is best. The big distros are jacks of all trades for the most part and that isn't a bad thing, its simply your argument about development quality ect is moot Linux doesn't work that way development on one is development on all.

Except you did, in fact, use the word suck and your comments also hold true for Windows. Windows does suck for some things and for other things it does not, in some circumstances Windows is just not as useful - Especially when CPU usage is pegged at 100% due to malware or your update just failed leaving behind a black screen with some wonderfully crafted spinning dots.

Don't try to claim it doesn't happen due to your isolated experiences with the OS, I can assure you it happens, all the time in fact.

Because features in Windows are marketing rather then technical achievements, the reason to switch OS from one Windows update to another is not bound by the sheer brilliance of the update it is about an API that allows to runs "optimized" games (and you know that when people are shown DX11 vs DX12 it still not obvious from the performance perspective why people "should" switch, which ties into a whole other slew of problems between Windows developers and hardware pushing gaming (to large for this thread)).
. Windows suffers from display scaling as well. Some things you wonder if they get all the money and have all that support why are there still simple issues on their platform.

The Windows shills and the so called 'unbiased' on the other hand, they're just looking for an excuse to dump on Linux and it's users....
 
I've been using Linux on and off for at least 15 years in some specialized cases and on servers, but I couldn't imagine it as a desktop OS. The gaming issues aside (which doesn't matter how many times has it been said is still the main reason why linux is not a viable os for many) Windows (except for the recent idiocies with telemetry and updates) I just use. On Linux whenever I wanted to do something I first had to refer to the documentation or online sources to find out how can I do what I want to do. And I don't just mean the OS itself. It's whenever I need a new feature, or a new utility for some purpose. Need to find out what CPU this computer is running? Search solution online, download util from repository. find out usage parameters of said util. Open a console type in the command line parameters.

It's still too inconvenient and cumbersome. And frankly I don't see much progress.
 
When DX11 came it was supposed to blow the sky with performance. DX12 the same. In reality what people saw were mostly regressions and developers found out it's just more work for them to get things even to the level of DX9.

Vulkan is the future, hopefully. Let xbox be xbox.
