Linux is awful...apparently

So, here's a dumpster fire of an article, that I wouldn't normally post a link to, but what was surprising about it to me is the source. The article is on makeuseof, which I've typically seen to contain pro Linux and open source content. So, I'm sharing this to get everyone else's thoughts. Please no war.

On a related note, I'm also a cord cutter, and I've noticed a multitude of anti cord cutting articles with points as "well thought out" as this one. It makes me wonder if the companies that own these sites have some kind of ulterior motive behind articles like this.

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/forget-linux-use-windows/

I scrolled through half of it, just reading the titles, when I realized that it's a direct mirror of the comments made in these very forums by users of competing operating systems that really have no idea but apparently are quite versed in the usage of Linux.

If Windows works better for you, stick to Windows.

So, here's a dumpster fire of an article,
Pretty much.
I had my first WTF at item 1. - Final Cut Pro? Not even a full Windows list of software?

I think the ulterior motive is to be controversial for links and eyeballs for advertising dollars. They (media overall) don't care why.

ya that software list wtf. lol

I was laughing at outlook being listed.... then thought hey I better stop creating 7zip archives, and I best not be scripting any of that with Python. That's windows stuff man. :)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/p7zip
Even the hardcore anti linux articles are starting to have a hard time creating software lists that don't include open source stuff. lmao

So, to be fair, many businesses do still rely on Outlook. The company I work for uses Outlook, but it's still a dumb point for a consumer focused article.

I'm a little confused about an article saying stick with Windows and using Final Cut Pro as an example...

The lack of software and 3rd party support the main issue with desktop Linux otherwise we'd all be using it.

Well most of us in this subforum are in fact using it heatle.

The article does make a point of mentioning games I'll give you that and we have circled it 3.14*infinity times at this point.

Regular software isn't a concern for average users anymore. It also isn't an issue for many pros either depending what field they are in. Linux has always been very popular for web development and it means there are a lot of native pro quality tools for all sorts of tasks. Many of those tools are also compiled for windows because the people making them don't care what OS your on, and why should any of us. If you help with a project intended to be FREE and open for all, who cares what they run it on. (having said that there is a very large growing list of very high end Linux first pro commercial software out there.)

Pro Video software is aimed at Linux perhaps more then windows these days. Adobes products are not as loved as they once where... and regardless if photoshop is really your thing wtf are you not running a mac anyway. (seriously average users are not purchasing photoshop or illustrator, and the pros that do use them run macs at a ratio of like 10 to 1) If your a photographer and use adobes stuff.... trust me your better off with Linux with rawtherapee or darkroom. Likewise average users don't buy or need MS office either.... outside of a few accounting nerds that dream about excel there are 2-3 very capable and in ways better free office suites which even if they are on windows they should be using.

Then this guy lists IrfanView? really that thing hasn't been updated since last year. Does anyone seriously use that I had to look it up. lol Really though there are multiple Linux photo viewers that I have no doubt blow irfan out of the water.

A totally non issue here!

As a devout Windows user i thought Linux was nothing but a server OS, then I grew a brain (as a joking figure of speech aimed at no one specific). Nowadays I can't imagine using anything else, Windows just feels so...Wrong.

Except it is an issue in the OP article referenced.

Except the things I do are simply not supported under Linux. I've got so much shift plugged into my sig rig I have to swap stuff out now. And I need another SSD. It's wild!

That ain't the main reason and you know it, it's much more despicable than that but I'm not gonna get into the details. :)

Whatever you think I know personally software support under Linux poses a huge problem. There's just no way for me to drive all the things I do under desktop Linux. No one here bashing me over the issue could do any better unless they completely through stuff away.

I feel like anyone who says they don't like linux doesn't actually know how to use a computer, and the author of that article is a great example of that type of person.

I tend to feel the same way.

However, it's a tool, you use what works best for you. I have a lot of soldering gear here, some very expensive, and yet one of my most used and best purchases is a soldering station I bought off Ebay for $45.00 and a desolder station built in the 80's.

Anyone telling me to go and spend hundreds on the latest and greatest Weller (who are pretty crap nowadays) can jamb it up their butt, what I've got gets the job done perfectly.

It has nothing to do with my opinion Linux for me on the desktop. It simply doesn't support the things I do. I get that what I do is 1% shit.

It's my go to for viewing/basic editing (I paid for a copy a few years back).

Not sure of the relevance of my skill set, but whatever?

You're constantly talking about how you deal with fucked up PCs and how you make a living from that. Hats off to you. You should understand in a place like this that no 3rd party is needed to deal with those kinds of issues.

Since this thread is probably better off derailed.... :D

When the makerspace craze was just starting up, I picked up a Hakko FX-888D per Adafruit's tutorials and general recommendation. I paid through the nose for it, but it seemed like a reliable alternative to the cheapo offering at Radioshack (you know.. back when they existed.) Still <3 it even though I don't use it near as much as I probably should to justify its purchase. Still solid whenever I need it. :)

It's a weird/amazing feeling when you swap out or rebond a component and fix something you otherwise would have thrown into the landfill.

So much for that...

The war is has long been over. And no one is really righting it except you guys. Look at you sig related to me and I never said that. Linux has it's strengths. If you were being honest about your sig it would say "Fuck desktop Linux for gaming." Yes, desktop Linux really sucks there.

Oh how I miss RadioShack....

Reclaiming devices is an awesome feeling. Currently restoring a Commodore 1084S monitor for my C64, I've removed the flyback and the HoT transistor and cleaned everything up, the Hot has arrived and has been soldered in place, still awaiting the flyback. I can't wait to fire it up again, feels like Christmas!

My Linux gaming experience is great, five years ago it didn't exist at all, three years ago it was growing, now there's more games than I have time for. No complaints regarding gaming and Linux here - Gamers come in all shapes and sizes, all with different wants and needs.

I'm finding more and more workplaces turning to the Google Apps suite as opposed to MS Office, less issues, none of the ongoing licensing costs, platform independant.

We live in an age now where, more and more, Microsoft products aren't as necessary as they once were. Most of the time people stick with them out of blind fear of change.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. For my daily needs, Linux by far is better than Windoes. Eeeexcept for gaming, I wish Linux can run AAA games at the same level at Windoes!

Give it time, growth hasn't stopped yet.
