Just ordered a GTX280!

I love the gold brick comments. $650.00 for a gold brick the size of the GTX 280 would be a steal!!

http://www.goldprice.org/

I'm eagerly awaiting more vid card pr0n!!:D

Here are some pics to whet your appetite. I'm running some benches of my Ultras before I throw in the 280. I'll start a new post when it's all said and done.

That's the laptop in my signature. The GTX 280 is about 1/4 the size of the laptop (which is pretty huge to begin with).

Sweet, are those Sennheiser HD 485's? I have them too :D. Let us know how it overclocks, mine is due in tomorrow :D! Thanks for the pics.

Those are the HD 555's (I think I got them back in 2007). Been stuck on Sennheiser ever since.

Grats on the purchase btw. I'd tell you how the performance scales, but I still haven't installed the card yet! Just did a fresh install of Vista so I'm still re-installing programs and adjusting the OS right now.

Majority people don't play with all the setting crank up highest(16xQ AA).

Are you suggesting that we should test ultra high end gpu at cpu limited settings?

If you want to buy an overpriced, overheated and that eat up a whole lot of wattage go right ahead.

The irony is delicious, especially coming from 8800GTX owner, which was released at $649MSRP, had the highest power consumption of any card at that time, and had its own share of heat problems. And guess what, at cpu limited situations, it performed no better than previous generation. There is no magic here.

+1. Nuff trolls.

Nvidia is price gouging once again. These 280's are not worth any where near what they are selling for.

Nice try Noob. Comparing a 2006 card to a 2008 card. That gave them 2 yrs to try and improve the card and you can see the disappointment. The 8800 was a popular card when it first came out. It might not totally worth the price but there's no doubt about it the card was well worth it back then compare to the release of the 280. There's already the release of the 9800 for a way better price and perform just as well. So thank you for proving the point that the 280 heat problem is just as bad as the 8800GTX or a bit worst and draw more power. And by the way, the 8800GTX usually around 70degrees on full load and NOT 84degrees. The 8800GTX perform just as good as the 280 on setting that doesn't need to go to the extreme to enjoy the game.

So stop pulling stupid stats out of your ass. Everyone here knows that the 280 should perform better than the 8800. But for most of the 8800 and the 9800 owners, it just not worth the price to upgrade. So get that through your puny skull.

So what card do you own again?

Hates? Wow. God must play dice. :p

Here's what an ex-9800GTX user had to say about 4850 CF in AoC:

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showpost.php?p=1335506767&postcount=50

Bookmark that fellow's post and ask him how he feels in three months or so.

Crossfire uses one AFR method, and while it does excel in some games in others it fails badly, even delivering less performance than a single card.

I own overclocked HD 3850 Crossfire. It's in my third rig.

Everyone here knows that the 280 should perform better than the 8800.

It does perform better than the 8800, and sometimes even doubles the performance. Also, with future drivers, I'm sure the performance will be even higher.

Again, you have no justification to say it isn't worth the money. This is the price every high end nvidia card usually is (Hell, the Ultra started at $829, and I didn't even hear as much bitching).

Stop bitching just because you can't afford it.

Well fine, I hope the OP Enjoys his Gold Brick. I'll just be sitting back thinking, yeah there's some idiot out there right now that goes through Video Cards like water because he has to have the best. Hell, I don't even think he knows it can play video games which is what these cards were designed to do. I think that got lost in translation while he was stroking his Epeen.
But of course his Epeen is a lot smaller than what he thinks.

I find it more disturbing that you will be laying back thinking about a complete stranger and how he or she spends their money and I simply cannot fathom why how said person spends there money bothers you so much .

The only conclusion I can come to for your animosity toward Gtx 280 owners would be that you lost your girlfriend to a dude because his "video card" was bigger and more powerfull than yours.

It's been almost 2 years now. I'm still waiting for my perfect driver for my 8800. I wonder when that's coming.

Affording it isn't the problem here. It call smart spending if you know what that mean at all. I'm happy with my card and have no desire to upgrade it. My computer is loaded and good for another 2 years. I'm a big gadgets whore but I've learn over the years that it's totally silly what I've been spending money on these products like water. My next hard earn dollars will go into a smart phone.

That's it for me in this thread. I'll let you people continue with your new toy.

Your so narrowminded and uninformed its unbelievable. The card is a smart choice for those who play at very high resolutions, or lots of AA. Just because its not beneficial to you, doesnt mean its a piece of crap, and it only makes you look like a fool to bash it. Stick to your word and stop posting.

I just ordered my third XFX GTX 280. I got a bad one that I just RMA'd and decided to give tri-SLI a spin or I may just put it in another rig.

These cards are getting a bit of a bad rap because of the price to be sure, but they kick the ever living shit out of a 9800 GX2 in real gaming. I would like to see a 4850 CF setup and play some games on it. The a lot of the professional reviews of the GTX 280 just plain sucked. Anandtech's was so horrible I don't even know where to begin. These guys are just plugging numbers into Excel and not bothering to actually play games it looks.

If you had a high resolution monitor, youd be all over it.Youre just one more person that cant comprehend the usefulness of the card. Try to understand that top end hardware isnt for everyone. You can bitch all you want, but then you just look like a whiny little bitch...

Well that's true, this cards exceed way pass the sucker 9800 series, In fact they are worse then the 8800gtx or ultra. Is like down grade with lower memory bus and ram. It really takes a performance hit at high resolution at 1900X1200 and up with aa. That's when the 8800ultra shines in. Now the GTX 280 is way better with way higher bandwidth and double the shader. I think they are great cards. At high res the 9800GX2 looses single GTX 280 in benches. I'm just waiting for ATI to release their HD 8470, so the 280 prices will drop then I'm grabbing one. I know is over price, that's because nvidia knows there is no competition yet.
Let those who have the money and spend the way they want.

Your next hard earned paycheck will go towards a...smart phone, and you consider the 280 spending that isn't smart?

Listen, this is just getting into a flamewar, and I don't want the thread closed. We're all in the wrong on that account, however, it's just shocking to me that people are complaining about this particular release. I really didn't hear this much complaining in the past. It's just odd to me.

i think everyone buying the gtx 280's right now is an idiot, the 4870x2 might even be faster for less money. And even if it isn't, the price of the gtx 280 will probably drop when it's released. It's not even like there's any game out right now which demands this new hardware. LOLCRYSIS? Yea, played it, beaten it, won't ever touch it again.

and if you have too much money to blow on yourself, ffs, get a girlfriend or something

A girlfriend?

Now that's a waste of money

I think anyone with this mindset is an idiot. R600 was supposed to kill G80, people ate up the bullshit, people waited, and were dissappointed. 4870 X2 wont be around for a little while yet. Buy whatever suits your needs best whenever your ready.

People are only happy when a GPU like the G80 comes along. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

True, plus GTX280 is a good buy. In my case, in Age of Conan I am about 5-10 FPS short of having awesome performance. According to [H] Review GTX 280 can get me that and then some. If there is an opportunity, why not?

except that we've already seen what the 4850 can do

stop being such a dumbass nvidia fanboy, if you want to bend over and let them ream you for $650 then go ahead, but you're a moron

This is what I mean. Don't you think that people who bought the GTX 280 know all about the 4870/4870 x2 rumors? New high end tech is always expensive and we can always wait for better performance or better prices.

In that case I think that everyone who bought a 4850 because in a year the GTX 220 will have double the performance for the same price.

Easy kiddo... no one's being forced to buy a product, and don't even start on the 4850: it's about as good as year-old cards from nVidia and came out just now at the same going rate for an nVidia one of equal or better speed. The rumors you hold so dear are just that: rumors, speculation, and guesses. Not everyone waits their whole lives to get nothing... some of us actually make things happen. No need to get annoyed and whine about it, buddy... there there little fella! That's a good troll... (tickles belly) yes, yes kiddo!

anyone rushing out right now to buy a gtx 280 (or even 2-3 of them, good God) is

1) an nvidia fanboy, waiting to lick the newest drop of semen from nvidia's proverbial penis
2) an idiot with more money than brains, who gets off on having the ZOMG NEWEST CARD LULZ SO I CAN IMPRESS MY E-FRIENDS (cuz i dont have any irl)

now don't get me wrong, I bought an 8800 gtx the week it came out. But the gtx 280 now isn't as great as the 8800 gtx was back in nov. 06.

Le sigh... the seller of my card didn't ship with the overnight shipping I paid for, so it's not coming till Monday if I'm lucky, and probably Tuesday  .

1) The 4850 uses one power connector, and is single slot. and it's cheaper than the 9800 gtx.
2) if two 4850's can match a gtx 280 in some cases (go look at the benchmarks) then the 4870x2 should at least be able to match the gtx 280. and like I said, it will be cheaper, causing the gtx 280 to drop in price as well.
3)Where are the games right now that require ZOMG GTX 280 TRI SLI? There aren't any. Crysis is a POS benchmark so don't even mention that.

Lol it is funny to have someone takes on this attitude calling others names. Personally, if you dont like what others are doing, unless they are attacking you, leave them be. It is their right to do what they want with their money. Jealousy does rear its head in different ways..of course this way is the more prevalent.

yea, you can keep going for the old "kid routine" while i destroy you with a few logic bombs here. i dont care.

it's their right to spend their money however they want

God bless America

and no I'm not jealous, I could go drop 2k on a tri sli setup if I wanted to but won't, because I'm not a moron

1) No, it is $199 MSRP vs. $199 MSRP for the 4850 vs. GTX. Sorry bud.

2) No, they cannot. Their average framerate is lower by far, and they have terrible minimum framerates, low bandwidth, and microstuttering, plus heavy reliance on not-always-flawless drivers for their operation in games. Crank up some AA/AF and it's a whole different story, where the 4850s crash and burn the GTX 280 soars high and remains more than playable. The GTX 280 can be had for $500 or less on current hot deals, such as the Microsoft Live Cashback program, by anyone with ease online. The price is low enough even at full price for the performance it puts out.

3) Crysis is a game, not a "POS benchmark" kiddo. It actually is efficient for the visuals it puts out and what it's actually computing, and is bar-none the most stressful GPU test around right now, making it the best. Plenty of games need at least a GTX 280 for good settings, even dual/tri in some cases, but rather than re-listing them here I will refer you to use the forum's search function to find the threads this has been hashed out and beaten to horse paste in.

What was that about logic bombs again, friend?

Private locations such as a moderated online forum with a terms of use agreement that you contractually obliged yourself to abide by during sign-up are NOT places with free speech for you to run around insulting people.

I have a feeling you'll be gone soon *shrug*.

The thing is that posts like yours always come out when a high end product comes out and its just the same old tired logic. I saw the reviews of product X vs product Y and Y is almost as good and is half the price therefore anyone who buys product X is a moron.

Then the poster goes on to say that people are free to call others names. This isn't as true as you might think. Call the wrong person the wrong thing at the wrong time and people get hurt my friend. Try calling your boss or an important customer or for that fact your waiter a dumbass and see what happens!:D
