Game Developer "Fed Up With Space Marines!"

are you listening EPIC and ID?? They seem to be hell bent on shoving bigger and badder video game characters. Getting a little old now gents.

I'm eagerly awaiting CS: Get Off My Lawn, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Turn Down That Damn Noise.

Of course, it will probably be a decade before we see Final Fantasy XXI -- I've Fallen and I Can't Get Up.

HERETICS!

lol old devs are old.
Retire or go work on borefests like Myst.
Plenty of older gamers (I'm 34), as evidenced in this thread, still like shooters. We just like them more advanced.

Some people who like games with very thick and detailed plot with role playing elements... *gasp* also like mindless shooters with space marines.

I hate that it's assumed if you like one genre you can't like another genre that's very different form the other.

I'm not sure if i'd like a game where i'd shoot a game dev talking about his family. Would be intresting perhaps. Just make sure it's an orginal weapon. Like a acid harpoon blunderbuss or something.

Games have become more buisness orientated than they were before, so it's unsurprising that devs take the afe option (or are made to by shareholders) rather than taking risks. Not all groundbreaking games have been sucessful (sacrifice :() but a few of them are very sucessful, and change the gaming landscape. We need devs to take more risks, or at least to see the potential benifits of doing so.

No, I'm pretty sure that everyones fed up with the second world war.

You know that means they'll just do world war 1. Which has strangely few games... (WW zero, that half-life mod...can't think of many others)

I want more space flight sims like XWing and TIE Fighter, or Wing Commander and Privateer. Privateer actually required some thinking to go along with your flying abilities.

An updated with modern graphics, MMORPG version of Privateer would be absolutely insane. I would DEFINITELY buy this.

Historically accurate recreation of being stuck in a trench, get trench foot, get shelled by rounds as big as a bus, get buried by the dirt blown into the air by said shell, get unburied, by another said shell of same size and force, get buried again, get unburied yet again, and find one of your friends has been exhumed from the blast, who's been missing for a month; get mowed down by machine gun fire running through no mans land, because if you didn't you'd get shot by your CO.

Ah, war has never been so much fun.

I am guessing he will not be a fan of this game -

Ah, war has never been so much fun.

But there has been loads of games based on vietnam, and the american civial war, which were both equally fun wars. I don't think any games yet has shown a true representation of what war is like (for example a game where you can be killed once in the whole campain, and one bullet kills you). It's all fantastical and romanticized to make it more fun for the end user, rather than depressing.

Perhaps the setting of being stuck in a trench with your own fears and being surrounded by death would make a good backdrop for a less action orientated and more story/narrative based shooter. Several situations would be intresting to play as a mass multiplayer too. I know it would be pretty similar to WW2 games, but it's surprising not many have used this setting.

Well, I guess having COD and Battlefield sitting at the top of the console charts means everybody's doing space marines...

Honestly, shooters still sell the most units on the consoles, so I wonder what the game companies will be creating, duh. Heavy Rain was a critical success, but didn't have nearly the sales as some "space marine" game...

I agree to a certain extent, but also can see why the industry sticks with the tried and true... it's really all about maximizing profits. Only a few companies like Blizzard have been able to rake in HUGE profits AND keep their creative vision. Most other game makers are beholden to their corporate bean counters.

The issue is actually more likely the relative lack of US involvement in WWI, and interest of it in American culture. You will notice almost all the war games are focused from the US perspective, which is understandable, as it is the largest market.

A French game developer surrendering because he's "Le Tired" of being a space marine, while claiming Europeans are "more refined" than Americans. You just can't make this stuff up.

Ok, Frenchy. You go play "Le Sims" and leave battling the alien bastards, demons from hell, and zombie hordes to me. While you're getting all existential I'll be having a blast. Now, where did I leave that BFG...

Bioshock should be political enough for anyone. No real complex choices to make, though.

Privateer's storyline was as linear as anything else.

LMFAO. As a Euro that is living/working/etc in the States I have say pls don't lump us in with the fracking French. Froggy boy is just bitter there is nobody else left to surrender to. Anyhow, getting back on track, I would love to see something like a redone Privateer or Wing Commander, heck Tie Fighter vs X-Wing would be epic as well :D Just give me something besides SEALS, Special Forces, Rangers, Spetznaz, GSG9, DELTA, w/e Give me something that hasn't been done 10 times over already that I am not going to get bored by with repetiveness.

wait....if this guy wants to put politics and family in his games...why not make a game about a family of politicians that were also....wait for it....wait for it.....

SPACE MARINES!!!!!!

Bro, we would never!! Hell, I feel bad for lumping the French in with this guy. ;)

They didn't join until the later stages did they? So it would have to be from a Bristish/French/German viewpoint, or just start further in. It's not really a popular, romanticized conflict the way WW2 is.
But, that is a problem, and maybe thats something that would be good to change. I know people like to feel a relation to the characters in the games, so you're more likely to replate to one of yours kind of thing. People like stories to be about them. But if the story is well written and the characters believable and realistic you can make anyone feel related to them in some human way. Thats the job of an good actor, and should be the job of people creating stories for games. Of course this would be a much harder concept to sell that a game with 128 player multiplayer and flying rocket tanks, but would be perhaps more memorable.
On the other hand, most people play games for fun. I know at the end of a day when i'm tired I like to go online with a group of people and shoot heads off things. It doesn't really bother me much what or who they are.

Yes sir, I can't wait to play a video game about making baby formula, changing diapers & hunting for a serial killer? WTF F' them & shove their artsy awards up their ass. "I can't believe we won 3 awards" he says, isn't that wonderful. Well I can't wait for Duke Nuken Forever to blow shit up & blast aliens to smithereens, just to help me escape & unwind at the end of my typical day.

What we really need is more WWII games.

With space marines in them!

Oh and I hope Warhammer isn't hell bent (haha pun...) on only releasing space marine for PS3... may actually make me buy a PS3 :(

I wonder if you play as one of the more prominent space marines in that game or play a sub of one? I'd like to go around in gold, gem encrusted armor blasting the defiled away!

What's this "we" stuff? I like sidescrollin Blake Stone 2D shooter games, I make that little sprite hero throw down like a boss.

Part of it is the consumers' fault and part of it is the studios' unwillingness to take risks. Look at popular movies and music. Extremely formulaic stuff out there. As much as games take to finance these days, people cannot afford to flop. The best thing you can do is support inventive IPs when they show up. I played and enjoyed Mirror's Edge. I'm disappointed it didn't get a sequel, for instance.

It's on steam (here), so i'm guessing it's on PC too (PS3 is getting steamworks before that however :p)

You play as a Captain (Captain Titus) of the ultramarines. So while not someone "famous" you are a higher ranking officer.Theres a website about it (here).

What is so great about War Hammer? Serious question. I have never played any of them. Should I?

Also that trailer for Space Marines looks badass!

Yes I agree. I think i need more than a gun to keep me satisfied now. Even 2 guns. I need some boobs. I hope Duke Nukem doesn't disappoint.

Being a huge 40K nerd (somewhere around 3 dozen different novels, and don't get me started on the codex's, rule books, and WD mags I have...), the 40K universe is some of the most bad-assed killing and fighting imaginable. Being a Space Marine is what Master Chief dreams of when he sleeps. :D

Seriously - If you like RTS's, the DoW series is pretty good. DoW II was a definite move away from standard RTS, but is still a fun game. Haven't played Retribution yet, so I can't comment on it. I'm looking forward to Space Marine as it seems to follow the canon of the 40K universe a bit closer than other games released so far. I know when the 40K MMO comes out, I'm going to be in trouble.

The board game? It has lots and lots of backstory/depth. You probably don't have to play them, but knowing the basics of the races/a little backstory will probably help you get more out of the game, and understand the characters/motivations (as long as the plot isn't crappy in the game).

To play it, youll probably need others, obviously, so check if there is a store in your area (where you can go play introduction games and try it out) or a group of others. Dawn of war did have some elements based opon it. It's probably something you like or don't like, and the more invested you are the more you'll get out of it. But as I said, you probably don't have to have played them to get the most out of the games based on the universe.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when things get popularized. Seems like production quality increases but ingenuity decreases due to risk aversion. Of course, I'm not looking back on the past with rose-tinted glasses either - there were plenty of "me too!" titles released back in the day.

Oooh steam, even better! Thanks for the links.

For those interested in getting into the 40k story, go read the Eisenhorn novels, my favorite and they give you a taste of litterally EVERYTHING in the 40k universe. If I remember correctly doesn't Titus appear in the Eisenhorn novels with him in book3? I know he teams up with a well decorated space marine but I can't remember who.

Which is rather ironic considering how horrible console controllers are for shooters compared to a real keyboard and mouse...

War Hammer 40k is much more articulated and well put together then regular War Hammer. Both "times" have really good novels but to me it seems a majority prefers the more gritty/gory story telling of the 40k over the original.

Honestly both are good really. The only difference is, 40k has better games!

I looked it up (this is a good resource!). He studies with an inquisition papprentice called Titus, but he's not a space marine (and would be very unlikely to become one), so I think it's a coincedence (Titus is the name of a few people, it seems a pretty common name in that universe). It looks like it's an original creation (the ultramarines haven't had a captain titus, so he must replace one of the old 10).

Let's take a movie plot, add some puzzles and a choose your own adventure decision tree: Heavy Rain

Ah ok, so a new Space Marine, will be interesting to see his role. Will he be considered an Ultramarine? (unsure if captain delegates you as one)

Actually there was a very cool Russia game concept inbetween you were a political spy. It was some akin to a political intrigue sims. You spent game trying avoid getting assisted and managing cover-ups and power upheavels. Not sure where the game went but an awesome concept.

I remember this game, played it actually, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. The thing that made this game fail was that the learning curve was ridiculous and the GUI was awful and confusing.

So the man makes one good game and one interesting game and he thinks he deserves the right to tell the industry how to run? Cage has his head so far up his own ass that he believes Heavy Rain created a new genre. Heavy Rain is basically a FMV adventure title with QTEs. I've been playing those since the 90s. Cage has no idea what he is talking about and seems to think he is some kind of gaming visionary and prophet that can dictate where developers should go. Of all the arrogant self-centered developers out there Cage is the worst. Jaffe, Molynux, and Cliffy B have at least earned the right to be a little arrogant and have a say. They have been part of multiple good games and games that have sold a lot of copies. Cage has one single good game to his name.

Well Heavy Rain devs - I'm sick of quick time events. That seems to be all you're about.

I've got an idea...how about more DLC for your damn game Heavy Rain devs? You made one then went and made a Move version of the game (don't see why it was needed), while doing nothing else with the game.

I believe their excuse was that Sony wanted them to add Move support and do to that they won't be able to make more DLC.
